Alex O’Loughlin – It is a piece about hair, but is definitely NOT a hairpiece?

This is a follow-up of our previous piece about the hair, with an extra something added at the end….

First of all, just to explain a few things: 🙂

  • We made it our business to study Alex intensely when we decided on our blog name, just about a year ago now. We like to know things about him and to share some of our experiences of him with others.
  • When we query things (like the last question about the hairpiece), it is not because we think lesser of people using such a hairpiece or that we feel it will be bad if Alex would ever need one. It is about a statement made or questions  asked, that has to be either proved right or wrong – nothing sinister about it. 🙂
  • One of our best online friends always throws questions about Alex at us – that is how our friendship started and that is how my studies about Alex started (We’ll rather not say what that first question was, because it would be kind of hard for us to explain on a public forum and it might not be appropriate either 😛 )
  • When we do studies, it is usually because we see the questions asked on twitter, or on things people search for and most of the time there are random thoughts and speculation given as answers, without real evidence (that is where the study about his teeth difference in Season 2 came from)

The study about the hairpiece we kind of left open for discussion, because we wanted to hear what our readers had to say, without leading you all into just believing our findings – thank goodness most agreed with what we think to be the truth 😉

We hope to explain what we think about it a bit better…….

There are no evidence on anything we have seen over the last few years of following Alex’s career to suggest that he ever wears a wig or a hairpiece – well that is other than in the 2 episodes of Season 3 (episodes 3:20 & 3:21) when the make-up department gave him one. We looked at videos and photos of him exercising, photos with fans and footage from Hawaii-Five-0 and unless he his wearing the most advanced and well made toupee ever made, he is definitely not wearing one!

Links to videos and evidence:

Receding hairline

This is the difficult one to prove. One of our friends keeps insisting his hair-line is receding and we keep saying it has always been that way. 😀

I was thinking of measuring his forehead and comparing it with different photos over the years – the problem always being that photos are not all the same size and it remains difficult to find proof for an answer. But while I was compiling the photos for the previous post, some pictures gave me a solution – a marker for comparison…….

Slide1

On the photo from 2005 from “The Invisible”, I saw this glitch in the hairline and on the photo of comparison I saw the little bundle of hair that looked out-of-place. Yes, that means nothing because hair can go anywhere, but then I looked at other photos from over the years and found that whenever the hair is combed in a certain way, that little bundle of hair is visible.

Slide8

Every once in a while this little wayward strand of hair shows itself on photos ….. in some pictures better than others 😀

That little strand of hair, that are a bit separated from the main hair-line, has always been there and remains at the same position. If the hairline had receded, that little flaw would fall away as the hairline moves backwards. But it is still there in the same spot and that tells me that there has been no movement in the front part of the hair-line.

But hairline also includes the lines to the side of the head….

Left

I know that on the picture from this year, his hair is a lot longer and can cover more areas, but even taking that into account, there seems to be no widening of the gap. And even with a difference in angle, I think we can pretty much say that there is no shift backwards….

But finding answers to all these questions, brought on a new one or maybe two……

A long time ago I read somewhere of fans talking about ‘the other bird tattoo’ on Marcus’s head, but I never knew what they were talking about. Then from some screencaps I took, I saw an image. On top of Alex’s head there seems to be something that looks like a bird, but for me it looks like it is only the lines in the hair that creates this bird-like image. What do you think?

I asked Paula what she thought and she did not look at the top of the head, but saw something different to what I meant 🙂 She came back with something a lot more mind-blowing.

Can you see the image at the bottom part of his head? Is this a real Alex tattoo or was it created for “The Invisible”, just like the bird on his neck?

bt3 inv-head-tattbt4

Are there any of the longtime fans that can help us solve this mystery? There must have been people who have seen this and discussed it before. Please help us out, if you have any ideas or answers…….

First let me say you girls are so thorough it makes me proud!! I have never noticed that marking on his head in The Invisible!! Good catch. I’m a long time fan and have never known him to have a tat on his head but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Thanks for the post!! You’re awesome! 😀

Wow! I LOVE your investigations. I know you do not take them lightly–case in point, the “new” head tattoo. What a great find! Not that I like it (I don’t), but amazing that we’ve all never noticed this before–thank you Paula for your keen eyes.

I hope this tat is not real–I think it’s dumb when people tattoo their heads.

I’ve also tried to measure various *cough* items *cough* on Alex’s body, usually making an educated guess using a finger or thumb as reference, But in this case all we have is his face, and the question really relates to the size of his forehead. So, we could measure his nose in each photo and compare it to the forehead in each photo (nose/forehead ratio) to see if his hairline is receding (and hopefully his nose is not growing), if someone really wants to go to all that trouble. Eyeballing it, I say no receding.

    McNerd out.

    Like

    • That is exactly what I am trying to say here, we do not have to go to all the trouble to measure anymore. With the marker of hair we got now, there are no more guessing the forehead size and I have finally given my freind an answer!
She can not despute it any longer.
If that marker disappears we can talk again…..

Cough cough (IHateYouBoth) cough cough …. IMO the same dude that did his (thankfully gone) aweful forearm tatt’s attempted to mark him with a “666” whilst he was a passed out drunk 18 year old…..but he awakened from his slumber, more beautiful then ever, before his mate could start the third 6. Thats the working theory I have in my head. 😉

Foyeur and Paula, your studies are awesome. In my opinion Alex’s hair isn’t receding and your post show us photos from several years that prove that you’re right. My surprise is the head’s tatoo that Paula found out. It’s the first time that i heard about it and watched. If i want to think that is for Marcus’s character, i believe that Alex is able to have a head tattoo because he always loved that art expression. TY

I’m completely intrigued. It does, however look fake, imho. It would be cool it it were real though 🙂
You girls are always on top of things… probably Alex too…. *cough cough* lol

    • It does look fake, but my question is why go to all the trouble of putting it there without ever showing it in the movie? – unless some scenes were deleted.
If we were on top of him, he would definitely not emerge soon….. 😛

  7. Wow! This is the most intense study of anyone’s hair that I’ve ever read! FYI, I think that the errant bundle of hair on his hairline (growing in a different direction) could be called a “cowlick”…*cough* OR a FUCUP lick… ha, ha!

I don’t think the tat on his head is real. He likes his tats and is proud of them and why would you do one that can’t be seen if your hair is long. Such a great study on his hair. Keep up the good work.

But if he was/is so proud of his ink, then why remove the forearm tatt’s? He also altered the original piece on his back and also has more ink on his upper thighs that may or may not be connected to the new and improved lower back piece, so thats hidden out of sight. He was a wild teenager, had his nose & eyebrow pierced. I wouldn’t put a scalp tatt past him as part of his mispent youth. I think if it had been for the character it wouldn’t have taken all this time to find/see, it would have been prominent to the character, like the swallow on his neck. Thats my opinion on it.

      Like

  9. I don’t think it’s real. If you look carefully you can see the direction of the hair in the ink, like it’s been painted on over his scalp. That wouldn’t happen if it was tattooed directly onto his skull. As for getting the forearm tatts removed. Did you see the quality of them? That was some exceptionally shoddy work. Alex comes across as a tattoo enthusiast, meaning, presumably, he wants quality ink on his body. I’m not surprised he had them removed. The other option would have been a cover up, the way he’s done with his lower back, but maybe he just wanted them gone all together – especially if the cover up wasn’t able to be tied into his other upper arm tatts. Lots of people when they get tatts done want there to be a running theme. His previous tramp stamp wasn’t that great either in terms of quality either. I think he had a chance to improve on it and he has with a very well executed cover up job. Cover ups often have to be larger than the original tattoo as well to ensure they work well, so that would explain why the new tatt is twice the size of the old one.

  12. before I found your blog a year ago, I read somewhere that Alex has SIX tattoos… I mean we all know about the lower back, the pecs and arms, which makes it five – so, maybe in that article (which I can’t find really anymore) they meant the one on the head as we never see it for the sixth?

    Like

    • Two on his upper arms, two on his chest, one on his back, plus the forearm tatts he’s had removed make 6. If you look at earlier pictures of Alex you can still see his forearm tatts as being visible. If someone counted the tatts before he had those removed, then he’d have 6 tattoos (possibly 7, I think he may have had another forearm tattoo removed besides the tribal barbed wire type on) or they may have just decided to count the tatts Alex has had overall, including those he chose to get taken off.

      Like

    • Andrea, I know which artcle you talk about and that was spesifically why I wrote my very first story about his tattoos. That one counting the 6, mentions them all (the forearm tattoos included), but they do not list his left nipple tattoo – and that is how they get to 6.( 2 forearm, 2 bicep, 1 Tramp stamp and 1 nipple tattoo)
Lots of people also quote these incorrect outdated articles (I have even seen it on new biographies – people just don’t bother to update things when they change). 🙂
I have however never seen a scalp tattoo listed anywhere.

      • thanks to both of you… I saw in one article (I think it’s on Just jared site) that someone thinks the bird tatto from Invisible is real.
As my dear Emerald said, if you count all the tattoos we know about it’s 7, but removed 2 forearms makes it five, and some sites included the mark on his left foot he had in November 2011 as new tattoo meant for Malia.
To me, that one on the scalp looks either real, or added digitally (like they “removed” his tattos for TBUP).
But, all in all, this is one of the best post you girls ever had (and I read ALL of them)…

        • Thank you Andrea. 🙂
To me it just does not make sense to add a tattoo that only shows in one small scene and does not add any value to the story or the character – especially to add it in digitally later.
I would really like to find out more about it – it is really a mystery!

I agree. Plus I thought this movie was an independent film, and they certainly wouldn’t waste the money to add a digital tattoo that no one even saw. Alex, on the other hand, does seem to need certain touchstones to get into the role, things others would barely notice (like picking out Mick’s index finger ring from 40 or so offered to him–it meant something to HIM), so I find it believable he would fake this tattoo, like he got the fake bird tattoo.

I THINK it was from Nov 2011, but I can’t find it on the net because most of Alex sites are closed now. I remember there was close up of his feet because of some marking on left foot, just… aaargh, why can’t I find it?!

            • Thanks Andrea – now we know where to look.
I just had a look at what they probably meant …it looks like red marks to me? Was that what they were talking about?
My guess would be that those are marks on his ankles from the shackles on his feet, from making those torture scenes while hanging from his arms in Epi 2:10. It was filmed about a week before then. (but that would be just a big guess 😀 )

              Like

            • Andrea, I was wrong about the possible injuries. Paula just reminded me that Steve’s feet were never in shackels in 2:10. So it must have been something else causing those marks 🙂

              Like

            • Andrea you mean this one?

I remember markings on his foot in other pics, but I think it was just a little injury. He was wearing a bandage in so1 (the epi with his PJ fight 😀 about the champ box) if I remember right.

              Like

              • I saw another pic with ankle from a different angle and there was redness there. It looked very much like skin irritation/injury, not like a tatt at all. Actually thought it could have been chafing from his trainers, since he wasn´t wearing any socks in the pic.

  13. I am so impressed with the depth of your research! Because of what you do, I feel I know Alex better and look forward to learning more about him.
Thank you for giving me an excuse to study his head and face and that cute little cowlick I’ve never noticed before. AlexNymph, I would like to say I am probably the biggest nose freak here and I don’t think it’s gotten bigger. Our nose can grow as we age though as well as our feet and ears.
I don’t see much change in his hair line in any of these pics. I am somewhat weirded out about the tattoo on his head. I hope it’s not real, but he was a wild youth, so it’s possible. I’m just happy he doesn’t have a neck tattoo. High forward, sign of intelligence, neck tattoo, not so much. IMO. *ducks for cover*
I think a neck tattoo is acceptable only if your hair covers it when needed. *ducks again*
This is coming from someone who had a total aversion to tattoos until I fell hard and fast for Alex! I thought he just had them for his McG role, then when I saw the pics of him running during hiatus, I became a fan of the ink! I want to trace them all with my tongue…Hmmm…maybe a neck tat wouldn’t be so bad? Ick!
As long as the ink is on the chest or lower, I’m okay with it. Oh sorry, this was about his hair. I have some opinions about that too, but am a little more flexible. He can sure get hairy in a hurry. 🙂 His full summer beard wasn’t my favorite, but as long as he has a smile on his face and a sparkle in his eyes, he is still drop dead gorgeous!

But yep, his Smiles and the sparkle in his eyes are the best of all. Love them, and those Eyelashes *thud*

The tattoo/’tattoo’ spot is inspired, can’t believe I missed it seeing as I have to rewind and re-watch everything I see him in several times. That is GREAT work. Its been mentioned that Alex was wild in his youth and now I am now destroyed thinking about the words ‘Alex’ and ‘wild’ in the same sentence. Do you think he’s retained some of it? Can you imagine a wild, unabandoned Alex? And again I can’t anymore with him so I’m going to find a dark room to try and calm down in.

I don´t know what to believe. I agree with those who think it is real, judging by Alex´s wilder youth (just guessing) and apparent love for tattoos. But then I can see it being a part of Marcus´s role, but the very rare captures of this sight is confusing. Why go to the trouble of painting his skull and have the tatt only visible for a couple of brief frames.
It is funny to me that when FOYeur asked me about his head, she sent me such a blurry cap that I was wondering how on earth she saw anything there, and had to start going through the scene frame by frame to study his head and came upon that doodle (and that wasn´t was she was even talking about LOL ). I still can´t believe it hasn´t been captured yet. I had to brighten up the frames to make it more visible. But it is there, and now it is up to tatt enthusiasts to ask Alex, at SOTB 4, is the tatt still there on his head or was it just on Marcus!!!! Pretty please, just get that info from him! Surely he wouldn´t mind sharing that info 😀

Thank you for yet another great post, I mean ‘study’. Love them all.

My opinion on his tattoos? Well, I think the one on the head is fake. Alex is just the guy who goes the extra mile for his roles, and if he felt that guy would have a tattoo he would convince the producers to give him one. No matter if it was seen in the movie or not. At least that’s what I think about that tattoo.

About the forearms, well, I’m VERY happy that those ugly things are gone. And no matter that Alex likes his tattoos, I’m sure he wasn’t very happy with those. AND most importantly he’s older and hopefully wiser now. Those tats were from his youth. Now he has to think about his body-art a bit differently. His body is also his capital. I think it’s a stupid idea to tattoo your hands, forearms or anything that is visible most of the time. At least if you’re an actor. And I’m pretty sure Alex knows that by now. And that is also a reason why those tattoos are gone now.

I’m generally not into tattoos, but his tattoos are a work of art and they are looking really great. The removed stuff simply didn’t fit in with the high quality ones he still has.
