Paddle-Out Ceremony for Mikala Jones, Brother-in-Law of #AlexOLoughlin

One of the lasting memories of Hawaii Five-0 is definitely the moving paddle-out ceremony in Hawaii Five-0, Episode 3:02 for Chin’s late wife, Malia. For me, it was the first time that I saw footage of such a Paddle-out memorial.

In this video, we can also hear from the cast about their thoughts while filming the occasion.

The paddle-out is a beautiful tradition that started in Hawaii and is now used all around the globe in the surfer world to say goodbye to one of their own after their passing.

The paddle-out is a spiritual symbol of surf culture.

It’s a traditional Hawaiian tribute to the life and legacy of people who passed away. In most cases, the paddle-out is a floating memorial held in the ocean, a few yards from the shore, where surfers and other water sports participants honor someone they cherished.

Paddlers often carry flowers and Hawaiian leis on top of their boards and in their teeth to the place where they will celebrate someone’s life. As they arrive at the selected location, surfers join hands, form a human circle, say a few words, chant, and splash the water.

The circle aims to represent the way the ocean brings people together

It was, therefore, no surprise that the Jones family (Alex’s in-laws) organized such a paddle-out on 17 July in Bali, to celebrate the life of the late Mikala Jones. There were some videos posted of the occasion and it was of course touching for us, as his fans, to see Alex there to support his wife and her family. Throughout the videos, there are glimpses of Alex and the family. We share only a few of them in this post.

From the footage, it seems that Alex and the two boys (Spike & Lion) did not take part in the actual paddle-out but Alex was there photographing everything on his phone during the ceremony on land and the paddle-out from the shore.

This video was made in memory of the late world surfer @Mikalajones who died in Mentawai Indonesia, there is no intentional element in this video, we only pay attention to his skill when playing a surfboard, hopefully he is now calm and the family left behind are given fortitude and can move on by continuing the spirit of Mikala jones, we love you legend king of the barrel, rest in paradise❤️

Mikala (44) who tragically died on 9 July 2023 while doing what he loved most, is survived by his wife Emma Brereton, and their two daughters, Bella and Violet, his 70-year-old father Dr. John Jones, his sister Malia (47), and his brother Daniel (40) and half brother Keoni Jones (32).

MJ ALL DAY ❤️ Thank you to the boys who put this beautiful edit together of the bro’s paddle out. Was an amazing afternoon we had celebrating a good man’s life. Incredible to see the surf community come together. Don’t even know how many people showed up, but it was beautiful. Been a hard week for everyone. Lost an icon in the surf world, a good family man and one of my best mates. Travelled all over together with the bro sharing some of the wildest moments and of course some crazy waves, with no one around. Swells coming for days and the first person I usually hit is MJ, going to miss ya man. Be good up there and send us a couple bombs 😉❤️🤍🥷🤙🏾👊🏾
  • It is clear to see that Mikala was also well-loved by many friends from around the world.
This is a day I will never forget…Mikala’s sweet spirit overflowing with Love…..
Magnificent beauty, tragedy, heart break, love, and connection. These are just a few words that come to surface when reflecting back on our time in Indo. Swimming up to the surface out of shock is the state of being at this point.
Still so many tears left to cry…
Still so much love to give in our hearts…
We LOVE you Jones Ohana ❤️ #mjallday

Thank you to those who shared the footage.

Thank you to all our fellow fans who showed interest in the event and inspired us to do this post.

It is such a strange and difficult time for any family with the passing of one of their own – And therefore our thoughts are with the Jones family on this big loss.

  7. Thank you for sharing the ceremony video. I didn’t know of Mikala Jones until this tragedy. The first part of the video, I was in absolute awe of him. His surfing is extraordinary. Wow!! The ceremony in the ocean I first witnessed on H5O and thought it was beautiful. A touching ceremony that made me cry, it’s so moving. Though it’s always great to see Alex, I don’t feel right commenting about him on this post.

Thank you FOYeur, for the beautiful pictures and comments, of such a sad time.
The fires in Hawaii are horrible. Was Alex’s home and family affected, by the fires?
Thank you for all of the information.

    • Alex live on Oahu – the fires were on another island of Hawaii, called Maui.
And yes, the fires cause terrible damage and must be devastating for the people of Maui.

    • No. no news about Alex. He is probably only one of hopefully hundreds or thousands of people who are pondering about donating or did donate already.
If you want to help those affected by the wildfires, here are some information I found on a page I`m following:

“Some of you asked for places to contribute to aid Maui. Here is a link to a recommended community-based Hawaii non-profit. Mahalo!
      From their website.
The Maui Strong Fund was created to provide community resilience with resources for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. The fund is currently being used to support communities affected by the wildfires on Maui.

I had watched this ceremony in two epis of H50. I thought it was beautiful and moving, and I did love it.

But now this ceremony was for real and seeing so many people congregated to pay tribute to Mikala and grief on so many faces, makes me sad. At the same time, the tradition of returning a dead sea lover to the sea, where he belongs and where he will rest forever more in peace, is so soothing and comforting, that I can’t think of a better way to bid farewell to him.

Rest in peace, Mikala, and may all those who loved you find peace too.
