As you all know we study Alex O’Loughlin intensely here, so whenever a question or a statement about him crosses our path, we seek answers! 😀
There has been a claim made in a comment yesterday, that Alex has lost most of his hair and is currently wearing a hairpiece and that even the buzz-cut as seen at the Blessing ceremony, is a wig. Some also believe his hairline is receding. We made some comparisons from specific angles of the buzz-cut from the last 10 years. For me the pictures speak for themselves, but I would like to know, what do you think?
(I apologise in advance for the poor quality of some of the pictures, as we chose them for comparison and not for the pretty. 😦 )

I have looked intensely at these pics and I can see no difference. Alex has always had a high forehead therefore his hairline would be in comparison

Obviously, some people (like that commenter) has no idea what fine, thin hair is like and how it reacts at different lengths and temps/humidity, etc. Alex has hair exactly like my father, fine, thin and wavy/curly and also a high forehead with a slight widow’s peak. He’s almost 80 and his hair, though greyer, is exactly the same as it was when I was a child. Alex’s hair and hairline hasn’t changed since those early shots either IMO.
It’s why Alex’s eyelashes look really long but they’re not necessarily heavy or look particularly dark because his hair is so fine.

Yes, his lashes are also thin, but when the light hits then the right way, they look more volumnious (sp?).

Totes agree, ESS. The gold standard for many long standing fans was Mick’s long curly locks, and may be why some peeps think he’s now losing hair, but Mick had hair extensions. Because of the fine thin hair, they teased his hair and added a few extensions to make it look thicker.
And if he were losing his hair, and needing a wig, he would not have the buzz cut now. He has the buzz cuz they shaved his hair for 3:20. If he were needing wigs, he would not have continued w/ a buzz wig after that ep, but gone back to his regular McG wig. Because it was his real hair, however, he ended up w/ a buzz style cuz they incorporated it into Show as it grew out w/ a “scissors accident” excuse. And a Danno snark. Two birds, one stone! 😆

I’m not sure about them using hair extensions on Mick, I thought that was Beth (Sophia Myles). The extensions they used on her damaged her hair to the point that she asked if she could cut her hair for the last few episodes. I know they used a full head set of curlers for volume on Alex (I’ve seen a picture years ago), that along with some strategic teasing would have been enough for the style they were going for. I’m basing that partly on my own hair, which is fine, but if I were to put it in rollers, tease it, and add extensions, I think I’d end up with something a bit puffier than what Mick’s hair was (or ‘the bouffant’, as Alex called it).

I agree, it was Sophia’s hair that got messed up. See Alex’s People’s Choice Award 2007 acceptance video he did from Sydney–he was home during the writer’s strike and his hair looked just like Mick’s.

Well I live with the fine, thin hair problem and have been around it my whole life. I know how it looks when it’s wet, when you’re perspiring, when the sun is strong and beating down on your scalp and when your hair is fresh and groomed. I’m not a professional so I can’t claim to know all that, I’m just someone who deals with it on a daily basis. Just my opinion.
IF this is true, which your photos seem to indicate otherwise, it’s a very slight and slow change which would not be abnormal for a man his age.

What I see from all the pictures, is that his hair has always been thin and it definitely does not look like he is losing hair and that there is no real sign of a receding hairline – so I agree 100% with your 1st comment about no change (I was actually just quoting her as being an “expert” on hair – I do not really think she is though).
This was her exact words, a comment out of nowhere:
“Alex has a toupee, even when his hair is cut short, he hardly has any hair that is why he wears a toupee or a wig. At the blessing with his short hair we can spot his toupee right away, I know I used to be a hairdresser so I can spot it anytime.”

Instead of wondering about the hairpiece (I just don’t see that, and with the AWFUL piece they used in 3.21 <<why would they do that if his 'good' hair is also a piece?) why is she not asking "WHY DO THEY INSIST ON COLORING THE GRAY AWAY???" That last picture from MyMax with the smattering on gray's above his ear…. Unffffff!!!!! #freethegrays

The cut all the men’s hair shorter and shorter and they try to pretty them up more as the seasons go on!
My wish for this season, is that they would just let McG’s hair go wild. I would think that he should have started out with shorter hair as an Navy guy and then it would grow out now that he is just a cop!

Great post, and I agree, his hairline hasn’t changed a bit.. but I still miss the “silver” I know I am outnumbered in that, but how do you go from Season 1 with silver to season 3 with no silver, you don’t get younger and show goes on!! this is just my opinion! I know the “Just for Men” crap, but..

The silver is exactly why I added that last beautiful picture! He has been grey since 2009 already and it suits him well and his hair looked fantasic in S1 – a bit longer and grey ! 🙂

Ontlls, I don’t think you’re in the minority about the silver, in fact I don’t know anyone who DOESN’T want the silver back. lol. Possibly there are some out there, I just haven’t seen them and believe me it would stand out. lol! It’s definitely a continuity fail on behalf of H50.

when he was younger, his face was perfectly sculpted with a deep cleft chin that looked like his chin was almost divided. I have to admit that even though his face isn’t as perfectly sculpted like it was 7 years ago because he’s older, it’s still perfect. he does have a perfect orb with a beautiful face.

I don’t think it is a wig. His hair line has stayed the same he just chooses to change his hair style in the off season. Plus the one episode he had to have a buzz cut. He had a full beard at the blessing I don’t think he has trouble growing hair. lol Either way I would like him with or without hands down.

Well, Sally I do recall him saying at the time he was doing August Rush that Jonathan Rhys Meyers was such a beautiful stunning man and he felt like a hairy ape next to him, or something like that.
So I suppose that’s why he has to do so much manscaping?
Wouldn’t mind helping with that manscaping business and wonder if does a brazilian aswell….. 😉

Who on earth thinks this beautiful specimen of man wears a hair piece??? Do they perhaps need a bigger screen? Alex’s hair is gorgeous whether it be short or longer. I prefer him with a little grey in but that’s my opinion but to say he has a hair piece? Never heard something so daft and I don’t mean to offend the person who says that either xx

Nothing about his hair has ever looked faked to me, he is just beautiful with hair and with the crew cut. I was more shocked about the FB picture that was faked this morning, Why would anyone do that when he has such a great body on his own. Makes no sense to me.

Yes, Alex’s hair is receding but no he’s not wearing a wig. The whole salt and pepper hair he’s had since Moonlight. The reason it’s not like that now is because of the flashback episode he had to “look” younger so they dyed his hair, cut it too, and Alex buffed up muscle wise to look like he would have while he was in Navy Seals training. Hair dye takes awhile to wash out besides the final episode last season 3 his hair was that color so they have to go with that too. Believe me if he was wearing a wig we could tell like in the funeral scene and as fan’s who noticed when his whole body especially his face started sinking in. That’s right we did and brought it to Peter’s attention. They can’t pull fast ones on us diehard fans we are too smart for that. Alex is like a chameleon ever changing but amazing each time he does…..:)

I think you gave a perfect solution for all the darker colouring of the buzz cut. Those scenes for the flashback were so short, maybe they should have used a less permanent colouring for it and not gone that dark for the rest of the episodes…

Lets face it ladies, none of us are getting any younger. Hair changes with age, thins out, recedes but Alex is definitely not wearing a wig (though I think they’re still dying it, which could also add to the appearance that his hair has changed). Short, long, curly, straight, he’s just one hunk of a gorgeous man but I really do wish they’d free the gray, makes him even more distinguished!!

I’ve personally thought Alex’s hairline has looked as if it were receding slightly the past few years. Not in an ‘OMG he’s gone bald’ kind of way though. It could be some of his haircuts giving that impression as well, it looks more noticeable to me in some rather than others. Bottom line though the guy can act, that’s all I care about.

I just had a thought. In the blessing ceremony he’d just gotten off the plane after being on holiday with Saxon and hadn’t had time to shave (according to reports). So he gets off the plane, is in such a hurry he doesn’t have time to shave, and yet somehow he finds the time to put on the most perfectly blended hair piece? Yeah, right. *eye roll*

IMO his hair has not gotten thinner…nor has his hairline receded. His hair, no matter the style has always been gorgeous!! And that perfect hairline is one of the things that makes this man so handsome!

Wait, what? When did he have a mohawk? You mean a proper one? That would have been rad. I mean I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a picture of him with what looks like a mohawk in his NIDA days, but I haven’t seen a shot of him with a mohawk spiked up. Was it something he did for a bit of fun inbetween going from longish hair to the buzzcut? Hmm pity he didn’t still have his Mick length hair, he couldn’t have gotten much height on it otherwise. Still, mohawks are cool. 😀

Yeah, that’s not a mohawk 😉 Although add another 10-15 cms or more of length on the top part, tease the living daylights out of it, and you could make that into a halfway decent gothhawk. 🙂

There’s a picture of him in a play at NIDA where I’m sure he has a proper mohawk (completely shaved at the sides, long strip of hair down the middle), but I’ve yet to see any pics of him with it spiked up. I can just imagine him with a full mohawk, his piercings that he used to have and his tattoos. He’s retained some of the alternative streak with the way he dresses sometimes, but it’d be awesome just to see him go all out.

Alex is not wearing a wig! His profile has not changed and his high forehead is a sign of his intelligence. He has the most beautiful profile in the world and his hair is gorgeous any length. I love the curls but I also love the brush cut it makes him look “bigger” lol can’t explain maybe more macho heehee. Wish people would stop criticizing him it really makes me freaking angry cause in my eyes there is no one more perfect than Alex O ♥♥♥

He has the most beautiful profile in the world – Agree with you 100%. I can stare at it for ages. I always think that when I was younger and still drawing pictures, that is exactly how I would draw a perfect profile!

First of all, I’m not a wig expert!
But, I personally think Alex isn’t the typ who would wear a wig, too self-confident and at ease with his body! Just look at the way he moves and poses for shootings, he loves every inch of his body (so do we 😉 ) with all bits and bobs that are not perfect!

I totally agree with buttercup, Alex is not the kind of guy wearing a wig to appear – what – younger, or more pretty?? He would dismiss this as ridiculous. May be he had to wear a hair piece for work once or twice for continuity reasons, but that’s about it IMO. It’s hard to say something about receding hairlines, but as a natural cause of time I would not rule this out completely. But for now I just think it depends on the haircut and style and wheather conditions and nothing else:-) Thanks FOYeur for the wonderful comparison pics, I simply adore the last one. I look at it and I am over the moon again and again how much beauty is assembled in this wonderful man. He has it all and his sense of self-irony and modesty make him even more beautiful and sexy.

I don’t think it’s a wig or hair piece…but he could be taking propecia to thicken it up a little. My neighbor takes it. It’s done wonders for him. Pain meds can also make your hair fall out and thin out. No matter what, he’s beautiful and I love him! LOL!!!

I was watching episode 3.3 last night, the one in the dinghy. There are scenes where his hair is wet and he bends forward and it looks like his hair at the very back top of his head (crown) is thinning. I’m afraid he will get a bald spot there some day in the next 5-10 years, and I’m not sure how I feel about that because I love his hair!

Season 1, in the sports car, going undercover as “whales”. When they’re at the stop light and he turns to Danny after the girls give them the once-over. And in another episode, when Danny has Bronson Pinchot strapped tot he hood of the car and is wildly driving in the parking garage. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, that’s when I fell in love with AOL.

Although that particular type of hairline tends to indicate the guy will bald from the front, it doesn’t look to me like it’s moved upwards yet. The guy’s only in his thirties, so it’s not likely he’s losing any hair now, but he’ll probably start within the next decade or so.

To me, it looks like he doesn’t have a receding hairline and isn’t wearing a wig. Just looks like he has grown it out a little longer and is using hair color. There used to be a few silver hairs near his temples and they’re gone. Also, when you see his hair in certain lighting, it has a reddish look that I’ve never seen on him in the past. On S4E1 of H50, Danny says something like ‘you’re 40 now, you can’t be doing all the crazy things you did at 20’ I think he’s just trying to look younger or he had/has another project that wants him to look younger.

Of course this article was written 6 years ago already, and I guess it has been proven many times, that even since then, that there is not really any receding hairline with Alex.
There has been more dye in his hair since near the end of last season already, if I recall correctly. The red colour has been there in the past season, just not always visible. The light in specific scene, just show it.
Doubt if it is really Alex that is trying to look younger or any other projects. Think it has more to do with his role as Steve.

I love his longer, thick hair. They’re coloring it. I wish they’d go with ash brown, not reddish brown. The reddish hue shows up when he’s in the sunlight. When he’s indoors, the color is dark brown.
They’e been coloring his hair for years. Funny. Some years it’s colored, some it’s not, hence the grey near the temples, which is more natural for the character’s age. Alex was going grey at 33, at the beginning of the series. His beard stubble is full of grey hair.
Maybe that’s why Steve/Alex shaved his head a few years ago. No need to dye it that year!

And it is also more practical if he and the stunt double and stand-in’s have the same hair colour. By colouring it, they can all look the same. Easier to add darker colours, than to try and get the stunt man grey patches.
