They say …. #AlexOLoughlin Is a Fine Man Indeed

We posted the pictures from the photographer Ross Halfin a few days ago, but we thought it a good idea to also post what he said on his own website.

  • From Ross Halfin on his website (click on the link in his name to have a look at his other pictures)

Hawaii – Quite surreal being here in this day and age. I photographed Kirk Hammett at the same place I’d photographed him just over a year ago, I thought it was sort of appropriate.

Kirk introduced me to the actor Alex O’Loughlin, who let us use a part of his house for photos which was very nice of him – a fine man indeed.

I actually got slightly obsessed with photographing the sea and the horizon. I found it actually quite mentally calming. Came back to Los Angeles and ended up in Cabazon in the land of the dinosaurs.

For all the hassle it is nowadays going through airports, with Covid etc… travel really does broaden the mind.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is guitar-alex-dl2.jpg

And then there is always hope that Ross will post some more of the pictures with Alex..

And of course, as always, we also hope for any other news about things related to Alex and his career.

I wondered if that was his house. That same wall flooring was in a couple of Malia’s older Instagram post. He looks well and rested. Love his hair is a little longer, wanna run mu fingers thru it. I wonder what hair products malia buys? 😆

    • Yes, there has been a number of pictures of Alex and Malia with others taken in front of that wall at their house and posted in the last few years.
I believe it was built as part of the renovations that were done a few years back.

  3. Thank you, Foyeur. This is highly appreciated! I didn´t know, those photos were taken at Alex` and Malia´s house. Another new information for me. 🙂 Love the longer hair, too. It fits the beard. And those guitar pictures are a real teaser. Whished, we will hear Alex play some day. 🙂

  4. That must have been a weird handyman. There are holes in the wall. Don’t worry, Alex. I’m looking into it. 😋
After looking through all those pics (not only the ones here) the question is: Who’s playing Campy Creatures in the O’Loughlin household? And did Alex have his own copy of Kirk’s book about Pete Way signed or was it a gift? And what’s with Frankenstein’s Monster? *investivative detective mode off*
Love that Alex is such an optimist, having pets and a white couch…
Thanks for the pics and the awesome edit!!!

    • I doubt if the pets or the kids have free access to that room. (It looks like dad’s sanctuary to me)
I wonder why Frankenstein is not up on the wall yet …. either it is new or the handyman of the house needs to get to work.
      Loads of questions …. indeed.

The best thing about this post is hearing from you at last, FOYeur. I was getting worried (you know, my paranoia with the pandemic and bla bla).

You and Paula are really true to your words and are treating us with any little bit of new information or new pics that you can lay your hands on. Much appreciated, indeed!

Now I wonder why you think that these pics were taken in ‘dad’s sanctuary’. Of course, that wall looks as if Alex had been practicing his shooting on it. That would explain his pets or kids not having free access to that room… And where is the ‘white couch’ mentioned by leiCa? Am I being very dense or is the vaccine shot I received yesterday (at last!) making me uncommonly slow?

In any case, Alex is laughing, and that’s good!

This is really nice as I loved these pics the first time around and certainly even more since I can see him in larger images.🥰 Absence certainly does make the heart grow fonder and how!! 💞💞
It just feels good to see him currently in whatever mode he may be in at the time just to help fill the void of his absence. So thank you ladies for being there and keeping us informed as it is a treat that makes my day.😘

    • LOL. That beard thing again. Don´t worry, I won´t complain about it since I really like it now. I wondered why people don´t like it and I include myself here from over a year ago. I didn´t really like the beard prior to watching DNA and now I know why. For me it was because Alex as McGarrett without the beard comes across sensitive with all of his facial expressions which I really like and which make the character complex and interesting. Wearing a beard would make him tougther and less capable to show those sensitive facial expressions or emotions at all. – That´s what I thought. …… Watching DNA showed me how complex and sensitive Alex is able to play with that wild beard. ❤ And beside of me not having the right to tell Alex how he has to look like, I started to really like that beard. This is true for me, I, of course, don´t know if t is true for other people who complain about his beard.

      • Complex and sensitive! Exactly.
The beard makes him virile, masculine and brings out Alex amazing performance as a badass SEAL in DNA, but, at the same time builds a contrast to his equally impressive portrayal of a hurt, vulnerable, compromised, and lost son and human.
(Yeah, I might be a little bit obsessed with Ka’i’o.)

          What is DNA?

          Like

        • May I join your obsession, Leica? 🙂 I watched DNA/Ka’i’o again yesterday and there are some things which I realised already some time ago. One of the things is that the McGarrett character has grown much over time whereas Danny Williams seems to be pretty much still the same immature, complaining guy. You also see it in other episodes but here it is pretty visible because of the way both characters are portrayed. The first scene f.e. at the table when Danny complained about it being insane if Steve goes for that mission. He said, it´s a suicide mission and then leaves the room and you – the viewer- know, he is only deeple concerned abour his friend´s well being. But that look that Steve throws at him comes across (the way I perceive it) like: “What? Are you still not able to tell how you really feel?” And then the last scenes at the hotel room. Is it just my perception of that scene or does it show, how much both characters already differ in terms of growth? Danny Williams comes across as a nice, “harmless” guy whereas Alex as McGarrett displays a very strong energy. And the answer to the question “Are you o.k.?”. …. I couldn´t help to remember the episode when Danny asked Steve in the beginning why Steve couldn´t sleep and didn´t get an answer and in the end they were on their horses riding into a beautiful sunset and Steve tries to explain to Danny how he (Steve) feels and Danny couldn´t understand it.
LOL. Seems I´m not only obsessed with DNA but with the character McGarrett – and not because he is that teflon action superhero, because he wasn´t. Alex did a lot to make that character very complex and human – what superhero starts crying? That´s imo one major reason why that character and the series was so good. And that from my mouth who never liked action films and shows because most of them are just brainless voilence. 😀 Looking forward to see what comes next. 🙂

          • Just realized how wrong the last sentences can come across, esp. since Alex is doing Jui-Jitsu in RL and is friend with MMA fighters. What I was referring to was violence in film and tv shows just for the sole purpose to
sell a product – to get money. I was not talking about action movies and shows with real content like f.e. Karate Kid or other martial arts movies with content because I watch them myself sometimes. And I´m not talking about violence in film and shows which comes as a result of psychological issues or RL (realistic) violence in a certain situation. Well, I know, this is a tricky subject and I´m probably writing myself into trouble now. I have to admit that I don´t really like MMA which doesn´t mean I don´t respect the people who do it. I just don´t really understand it. So I try not to judge – Well, I probably already judge by writing, I don´t really like it.
Stepping down my soapbox now. If anybody wants to write a comment, feel free to shoot. I´m not hiding. 😀 Any other perspective is welcome.

          • Completely agree with your assessment of D.
(To be honest, I never liked him, found him annoying right from the beginning (hence my name Dannoying for him) but I thought he would change over the time, a softer portrayal, saying the hurtful lines and insults in a nicer way, with a twinkle in his eyes to show the character doesn’t mean it. But no. Never happened. He always sounded like he really meant it. “Your mother had to fake her death to get away from your father.” “You don’t know people only ways to kill them” Ugh.)
And I think Alex wrote him in character. Turning around and leaving, D did the same in 7.18, when Steve was saving the day and a lot of lifes again, risking his own life and health, Danny “had nothing” and went away.
And I think that Alex didn’t do much with the character Danny is telling. Obviously for him Steve and Junior are real brothers in arms, and more, real understanding and supporting friends.
But enough of Dannoying ;-), I’m watching because of Alex’ Steve. Again. And again.
Hm, maybe this weekend another round of DNA, Ka ‘i’ o. Hubby is used to it. 😀

            Liked by 1 person

            • Hm, I don´t know. I think, all characters were written with flaws. That´s imo why the show was interesting because it´s human. I liked McDanno in the beginning and I liked the bromance in which Steve imo was always the “stronger” part even if he was struggeling with emotional problemes as well. But you can clearly see that Danny really loves his friend and cares for him and vice versa even although Danny was hurting Steve´s feelings more than once. And yes, I would have liked to kick him somewhere a couple of times because of his rude behaviour. 😀 And I really like, that Alex made the character McGarrett even more human and believable by the way he portayed him with his flaws.. He did this obviously from the very beginning of the show. But imo it´s not believable that a character doesn´t change over the run of 10! years like the Danny character. McGarrett did grow a lot and this was probably because Alex gave input himself. I don´t blame Scott Caan for probably just going along with what the writers gave him. It´s very likely the writer´s “fault” that there is not much growth for the Danny character. They probably thought: “It´s an action show, so not much character development is required.”. The only exception imo was the episode in season 10 when Danny met that woman and started to deeply care for her, even though he didn´t know her name. I like that episode a lot. I loved Hawaii 5 O as a good show with a lot of character development – which is true esp. for an action show – and good stories, but imo they messed up with the Danny character. And I also think, the friendship between McGarrett and Lou Grover was written very nicely and funny in the beginning with the two “roosters” which tried very hard to show who of them is the alpha-male and became close friends. But then that story arc was lost along the way. Would have been nice to see McGarrett forming a close friendship and trust with someone who was able to keep up with him. But the writers obviously thought, it would weaken the bromance.
You wrote: “Obviously for him Steve and Junior are real brothers in arms, and more, real understanding and supporting friends.”. True. But again Steve is the stronger part in this relationship, although Junior was already pretty mature for his age and tried to support Steve as much as he could, emotionally ansd as “brother in arms” which was really nice to see. 🙂 . This was more like the relationship that Alex and Beulah seem to have in real life. Beulah is often referring to Alex as “my big brother”. It´s nice to see that they like each other so much in RL. 🙂
The writers came back to the bromance in the end with Danno being jealous because he thought, Steve, likes that “new man” more than him. It was nice, but there were lots of opportunities for character development lost during the show imo.

              • Hm, Alex not doing much with the Danny character in his episode? Well, I think, that episode was about Steve and Danny as a cop was not in the position to do much here. What sense would it make to develop the Danny character in that episode? So Alex wrote him “in character”. And I felt, the way both actors portayed their characters was telling – conciously or unconciously. That´s hard to say. But since Alex was the director and by what I have watched him doing so far I would guess, it was absolutelly conciously and it was a great move.

Que sera, sera… But the Alexpressions will always be there.
“Whether I was working on a building site or auditioning or moving to the US, I’ve always done it with all of my heart. I don’t know how to do it any other way.” That’s him. Writing and acting are two sides of the same coin, no matter what the writers ‘throw’ at him, he will stand out, develop it, never phoning it in. I once saw an interview with Alan Rickman and he said (paraphrasing here) if the character you play is written onedimensional it’s your duty as an actor to make him multidimensional. I even think he said ‘damn duty’. 😉

                • Oh yes, the Alexpressions. Maybe you watched the recent reruns on German tv. During one of the episodes, which I unfortunatelly don´t remember the titel, they had to do a pretty dull scene and all of the sudden the Alexpressions started. About 4 or 5 in a couple of seconds. It was almost like Alex was thinking (and maybe he did): “Hey guys, I´m bored. Let´s spice things up a litlle.” I was just sitting in front of my tv set surprised for few seconds and then I couldn´t help but started laughing out loud. 😂

That’s our Alex in pure state! Trust him to enliven any scene, dull or not, with an Alexpression or two at the most unexpected moment. And it’s not only his facial expressions, but his body language as well. He does great things with these long legs of his, especially when he’s creeping up on the villain, holding his gun with his two hands. A friend with whom I was watching an epi told me once “Look at his legs and feet! He’s dancing!” And well, he was!

These Alexpressions and dancing steps have been a great comfort to me when the lines were especially painful…

                    • Yes to the legs! Legtion!
There is an episode Steve approaches a house, slowly, carefully, weapon drawn and then he steps over a big block of concrete. Oy. He doesn’t even look down, and there is absolutely no movement in his upper body. Just the legs doing the work.
Oh, and when he is kneeling down he does it with both knees simultaneously, not one after the other like others do it. You can see the difference in 4.01 when Steve and Danny have to kneel down in front of the thugs.
Watch it and thank me later. 😉

                    But his multiple faces weren’t!

“Legtion”! leiCa, you’re great 😍! You should start ‘ALEX FROM A TO Z FOR ROOKIES. The Ultimate Handbook to become an Expert Alex Fan’!

There are many examples of legtions indeed! One of my favorites is in 4.08, when he and Chi are running after Ian Wright, and Alex suddenly starts sliding forwards on one knee, gun in hand, without looking down, or bending, or nothing. He later explained he had ad-libbed, so he did not wear a knee pad and that made him limp a little after the scene was shot. In that same epi later on, he also makes several intricate dancing steps when approaching a house. These legtions and the pleasure of seeing him riding a horse make it a very enjoyable epi.

And yes, the way he kneels down in 4.01! Mmmmm…

And he lying by his pool, blissfully unaware that his legs are the object of such thorough analysis 🤣🤣🤣!

I live in Canada, but have friends in LA. My first trip to LA was to the Premiere of the Back-Up Plan in Hollywood in 2010. Then I went to Sunset on the Beach in Honolulu for the Premiere of Season 1, Episode 1 of Hawaii Five-0. Met Alex for the first time, got my first autograph.
Then at The Grove in LA, we heard he was being interviewed there, so we made reservations. I asked our server to offer him & Amber a glass of wine, when they arrived. She came down & said, he remembers you ladies from SOTB. Amber had a glass, but he was being interviewed & declined. He came down to thank us for the gesture. Had our photo taken with him then. We’ve been to SOTB every year except a couple, had another photo taken, more autographs. He’s been wonderful
The last photo I had taken with him in 2015, I had missed the year before because of conflicting dates, he said to me “You’re back”, which made me feel great, we spoke briefly. I asked for a photograph, he looked for my camera & said “you want to have a photo taken with me, but you don’t have a camera”. I said “no, but she does” (I had arranged for someone else to take the photo). He just laughed.
It was all a dream come true. I’d never done anything like that before, but my BFF Mary Enriquez & I have done so many things together. It was because of Alex, that we met, when he was on Moonlight. I almost met him in England in 2009 for the Moonlight, Angel, Veronica Mars Convention. I had everything booked, but he cancelled at the last minute because of a conflict with The Back-Up Plan. I went anyway & got to meet the other actors from Moonlight, it was an incredible event.
So there you have it in a nutshell.

Watching videos of him at the SOTB events over the years and seeing the countless photos he always very graciously stops to take with his fans, I’ve fallen in love with the gentleman. He’s a humble fellow and he appreciates his fans.

I always feel proud when Alex is praised, and the fact that he remembered you and was so nice says a lot about him. He knows he needs his fans, and one might think that he’s kind to them just out of interest. But that he really cares about them is undeniable, which makes is so endearing!

Now I wonder what makes you think that most of us have met him. He’s not exactly the kind of celeb who likes to be available and in the limelight. If he’s near a red carpet it’s for promotional purposes only, not out of pleasure, whereas many celebs, at least in Spain, go to any length to be on any carpet. So it’s very difficult to “catch” him.

Your unsuccessful experience in London bitterly reminds me of my own one, when I travelled all the way from Spain to Hawaii to be there for the SOTB in 2018, and the event was delayed because of a dratted tropical storm. My plane took off from Honolulu just at the precise moment the event started at last on the following day. Both my mom, a hardened Alex lover, and I were sick with disappointment!

The event was cancelled at the very last moment, and there was no guarantee for the following day. It all depended on the storm. I heard it would take place just a few hours before leaving. As It takes three flights from Honolulu to my place, it was risky to reschedule, as I had work commitments waiting for me at home.

                    >>Maybe we can even get him invited to Europe one day if he agrees>>. I haven’t the faintest idea of how we could make him come to Europe. When he has visited Europe, it has been on private holidays, so I don’t see him advertising “Hey, fans, I will be in Paris visiting the Musée d’Orsay (or the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam, or The Uffizi Gallery in Florence) on the 14th of September! Come and see me!” That’s what he would say if he were a nice man, which he’s not, as we all know 🤣🤣🤣!

Mary & I had the same experience, but slightly different. We booked our flights for SOTB in 2014, but the dates were changed, instead we took a cruise around the islands, it was a lovely week.
That’s actually happened before, in fact, we booked our flight to Honolulu, turns out the dates changed, so we actually went back to LA & took another flight back to be at SOTB. It was an expensive experience.
I didn’t go back for 2016, as we were in the process of selling our house around that time. 2017, was a busy year for me, Ended up travelling to Europe to visit my Goddaughter & also went to Belgium to visit with Magala & Michel from SOTB.
Things just got too busy with home life & travelling elsewhere that I wasn’t able to be back to Hawaii. Hopefully I will after this pandemic is over & done with. 🤞
