#AlexOLoughlin – It’s Time To Say Goodbye!

I think really if there’s nothing out there in the dark, then once we’re dead we’re just dead and all religion, all spiritual belief, is redundant. So there has to be something else, or what’s the point? And if we accept that there has to be something… then there can be anything.

SPOILER ALERT – If you haven’t seen all of Alex’s work, this might really give away the surprises of the work we refer to!

Where does an actor like Alex go to, to find the emotions of dying. For almost anything else they have to portray, they can go back somewhere to find something to relate too. But none of the living really knows what it is to die. I have always wondered if it is uncomfortable for an actor to “die” or play dead.

To be killed by a monster is kind of easy – it is total and brutal fear that you experience. And here we can see Deputy Eric Fraser’s last moments on earth. The thing he feared most in life, got to him, The Man-Thing!

What emotions flash through your mind when you know, this is the end. It is inevitable I am about to die and I want to do it with honour.

Apparently Alex extended the scene of Will Bryant being shot and dying much longer, than what was originally planned, but the director liked Alex’s version of it so much that he decided to use it. You decide for yourself….

(Of course the real life Will Bryant died of fever on the ship on his way back to England, but what can be more dramatic than to be killed by your wife’s lover? However I am certain Alex would have “killed” a death, dying of fever, just as well)

You live by the sword, you die by the sword. In The Invisible we have two lovers Marcus and Annie, who took their passion and their criminal behavior so far, that they kill each other in the end. (Not that we know if he really died)

In Moonlight, Mick the human, dies twice.

First by the hand of his wife Coraline, who feels that by “killing” him she is giving him eternal life.

The second, by the fangs of his best friend Josef, when he begs him to do it.

This time he is driven by love…..

“Kill me for Beth, My Beth!”

In Whiteout it seems Russell gets what´s coming to him.

He kills a few people in cold blood, out of pure greed, and in the end he meets a horrible death at the hands of nature itself.

As I am typing this, I can’t help but cry, thinking of Alex as Vincent in Criminal Minds.

Those touching words of guilt from Vincent,  towards a boy he related to after killing the boy’s mother. Seeing himself in that boy made him realise the monster in himself! FORGIVE ME.

Was there redemption in those words? Did the dying Vincent find peace for his soul? How is it that you want to cry at the death of this serial killer “monster”.

All I can say is Bravo ALEX, BRAVO!!

I think the spirit of the man himself is beyond salvation and that’s what I as the actor went for, you know?

Goodbye Sweetie………we know we’ll see you soon, because your present Ohana has got your six!

With Steve there will be good times and there will be bad times, but you’ll always be able to smile at the end…..

Goodbye girls….

  1. Very interesting and I loved seeing some of Alex’s characters all together. As for Vincent in Criminal Minds, I felt so sorry for him. I cried when he died. As you say to feel sorry for a serial killer? Alex portrayed him with such hurt and helplessness you couldn’t help feel sorry for him. I was rooting for him to get away but you don’t get that in Criminal Minds…….

    • There were lot of people saying that this Criminal Mind´s episode was the best. I think because Vincent did show remorse and with blind kid, that end scene melted hearts.
On another note, think Alex “loved” his gory horror flick. Shame it wasn´t shot any closer, would have loved to watch his face better. But the blood splatter is there anyway 🙂

I think he actually got away…..death might have been the best solution for him – he was such a tortured soul!!

    • His air pirouette in Will´s death scene, it was quite remarkable. But that moment when Will looked at the ocean and prepared to die, his expressions were so spot on. I cry at that scene…

Same, poor Eric was the most innocent of them all….and he died the worst death!
And with Will Bryant I just thought he felt like he had enough….this needs to end right here!

I have just read this and felt quite emotional and Alex’s portrayal of Vincent has me glued to my seat every time I watch it. It is the only episode of Criminal Minds I have kept.

Ahhhhh….poor Vincent. Everytime someone says Alex can’t act I want to make them watch that episode and then tell me with a straight face that he can’t act. He is so sadly underated.
    Great job girls!

Totally agree. How can anyone say he can’t act? Definitely one of the most under-rated actors out there. Hey, but at least we appreciate him and hopefully after H50 is done, opportunities will open up for him. (Still think he’d make the best Jack Reacher ever! Jack doesn’t say much so it would give us the chance to see that FACE tell the story, as Alex always does.)

I actually agree with those fools that says he can’t act……because he doesn’t act, he BECOMES those characters.. 😀

He was so awesome in that scene in Mary Bryant – like he knew at that moment that he had to die to save the woman he loved, and he did it gladly. And Vincent, oh Vincent — there was a redemption at the end, he HAD to die to close the circle that started when he witnessed his own mother’s death.

Thanks, Foyeur, for feeding my Alex obsession this morning!

  6. ACA with everyone, Will’s moment of coming to peace with the idea that he wasn’t leaving that beach alive is a beautiful thing…. I think the special effects guys kind of overdid it on the musketball wounds, though…

  7. Oh girls!! I think *this* is my favorite post of all!! Mostly because it deals with my favorite subject….his ACTING!! It always amazes me that english is not your first language because you still express yourself so much better than I do. LOL. This is such a wonderful tribute!! I’m going to repost it over on my blog since you gave me permission to do so. 🙂

    Mick *eep*
    Steve!! (NK epi) *eep*
VINCENT!! Oh…Vincent…..I have no words for the way you haunt me and break my heart and soul into pieces.

A bts interview for CM said that they actually wrote that episode differently, to give some redemption to the character and to see things more from his POV. Alex portrayed that character so brilliantly. I just can’t find the words. All I can say is there is a reason after watching every single CM episode there is, that this one episode still stands as my fave. Even long before I knew who this Alex O’Loughlin guy was. 😉

  8. What a fantasic blog this is and with the pictures to match !!!Alex’s acting is amazing and he thinks he is just average!!!!!! No way !!!!He is brilliant and as has been said in dufferent ways sometimes it’s not what he says but sometimes what he doesn”t {IN WORDS} that aces the role. I completely agree with FOYer when she says Alex BECOMES the chracter. I once had the privalege of taking part in a Q&A event for AUSTRALIANS IN FILM and I actually told him that in those very words!! Since he underestimates himself so much he just lit up and gave me this gorgeous smile {YOU KNOW THE ONE} and said :”Thank You “in such a lovely way. we chatted for about 5 minutes about his roles and “Detaching” from them when they were over and a few other things .I will never forget it!!! Alex is truly “One in a Million”

Thank you for joining in in our fun.
Good to hear somebody actually told him that…..he makes it looks so easy and he just lives through his roles.
It is also good to hear from people that have actually met him in person, that the perception we have of him is true.

His best dying scene (even though he didn’t) was in H50, S6E25 when he was shot in the plane. His eyes were haunting,

He was good, of course, but we knew that Steve wouldn’t die, since it would have meant the end of the character, so we didn’t suffer much.

I personally was more upset by “his” death as Will Bryant. Of course, the first time I watched the show, I already knew Will would die at the end but even so, Alex’s face seconds before being shot showed such a myriad of microexpressions that I could share all Will’s feelings. I get misty every time I see that scene.

    • Yes, sometimes it feels like yesterday – and yet such a lot has happened since those early days here. Having some fun with posts like these was great.
And looking through the comments, I not only miss those days, but also the people who used to be part of the fandom back then……

I love the drastic differences in Mick’s reactions to being bitten. When Coraline bites him, you can see shock, terror, pain, and panic in his face. But when Josef does it, it looked and sounded like he was in ecstasy. Even Alex said the scene where Josef turns Mick back into a vampire played on the “ambiguity” of vampires sexually. In other words, even he knew it was hot af.
