#AlexOLoughlin – A Wish Come True?

Last week the filming of Season 10 of #H50 officially started. A few weeks back some scenes where shot in LA and Peter Lenkov confirmed that it was an episode written and directed by Alex O’Loughlin.

From what we have seen so far, it looks like this episode will be broadcast later in the season – not sure yet at which number it will be. On the script it is called  Episode 10:01, but that is just because it is the first episode in production for the new season and not because it will be the first one broadcast. Of course we will keep you posted on when it will be.

There’s been a few comments about the episode, but I do not want to spoil too much of that for those who don’t want to know. However there is one spoiler that I want to share, because it kind of ties in with something that Alex said in the past.

From Christine Lahti on Twitter:

ShootingHawaiiFive0CBS with my favorite TV baby boy #AlexOLoughlin    ❤️

From this post by Christine, it looks like she is in Hawaii shooting scenes of Doris for this episode, written and directed by Alex.

This reminded me about an interview with Alex of a few years back …….
  • From an interview, nearly 6 years ago:

Franck: So Steve’s mom keep tricking him. How much compassion should and will he have with her?

Alex: This is an interesting question because. I don’t know what they have planned. I haven’t seen any scripts that reflect it, but when they do write something, I am gonna have a part to do with it, because this is an extremely painful topic for this man, or for anyone.

You can’t write something that dramatic, like a woman who faked her own death for 20 years and then coming back and then leave again. You can’t write it haphazardly. You have to be very careful when you write that because ….. I know it is like a cop show and stuff, but if we are talking about things that would affect a human on an emotional level, it could potentially kind of destroy someones trust with women forever. So it’s a tough one. It is something that is just pushed down for now.

This interview was recorded in November 2013, at the press day in LA. You can read the full interview here: Alex with Franck Ragaine from TéléStar

To put the interview into perspective we need to clarify the time frame in which it happened – It was recorded near the beginning of Season 4.  Doris left at the end of Season 3 with no real explanation to Steve, and by the time of the interview, it was clear to fans that she was not coming back any time soon.

In fact we heard about her doing stuff behind the scenes for Steve and the team, and we heard about her interaction with WoFat during the years that follow, but we only got to see her again during the rescue mission of WoFat’s father 3 years later. It was a kind of weird stand alone episode, made to celebrate 150 episodes, but it did not really explain anything.

However this is how Alex explained his thoughts about Steve and Doris in that episode:

TVGuide.com: Do we get to see any more of what McGarrett finds in the box from Doris?

Alex: Not to my knowledge. To me, the way that read and played was that it was like Doris said, “Look, I left a diary there of my deepest personal secrets and I want you to read it. I want you to know who I was. I want you to know who I am. I want you to know the things I haven’t been able to tell you, the things you might not know. I want you to have those. I want you to have that piece of my heart.”

So, it felt like a really beautiful movement in the correct direction for this relationship between mother and son. It felt like a great thing of trust from her, and it felt like an olive branch. Like her just saying, “Look, when I say I want to give you transparency, I really mean it. Here’s me showing you that.” So I think that [scene is] a lot more about their relationship and what happened in the relationship between these two than any government secrets or anything.

You can read the full interview here:  #AlexOLoughlin : Some more thoughts shared about #H50 Episode 7:07

Even though Alex had these nice thoughts about what happened, it still kind of left us with no real reason to think there is any form of closure to the story.

During the panel at the Paley Fest in March this year, Peter made a comment about Alex writing a script. He mentioned that there were eight pages of dialogue in it, with the focus of it on the characters.

And that brings me back to the heading of this post. Adding thoughts from over the years together, and thinking that maybe Alex got his chance to write some carefully written story about Steve and his mother Doris.

One can only wonder – Will this be wrapping up their story? Will Steve’s trust in women be restored? Will there be any real answers? Or will this all be just another random story of Doris, leaving us with more questions about her motives and doubts about where her loyalties and love lies ……… ?

I for one, do think of it as a dream come true. I may be the only person on earth who feels this way, but I love Doris, understand what she did and why, and have forgiven her. Plus, I love how the only two times Alex has written, he brought in Joe White, and now Doris, two crucial factors in his mental wellbeing, showing Alex cares for the depths of his characters. Love it and can’t wait for the premiere! Ant idea when the bloopers from season nine will be available? I am ready!

Wow, Alex wrote this episode and he gets to direct Christine as his mom, Doris. That’s quite amazing. He’s had a lot of time to ponder over how their relationship has been portrayed on the show and it’s really frustrated him at times over the years. I trust Alex to write something deeply emotional about their extremely complicated relationship which has left Steve without a mother for most of his life.

I’m also a bit scared. Peter warned us to bring a box of tissues because this is going to be a really emotional episode.

I’m so glad that Alex is being allowed to let all of his creative talents shine.

Your post is thoughtful and well written and expressed what I believe most of us felt whenever Doris appeared. I don’t want to need tissues so I hope that whatever happens in this episode Doris survives because after losing Joe White he still needs his mother in his life. Even if she is not perfect, she is still the woman he will always call Mom. Whatever her reasons for doing what she did, I never doubted that she loved her son and that he loved her.

  9. Once again thanks for your thoughtful insight. I hope this episode restores Steve’s trust in women. The only thing that scares me is that the tissues needed will be for Doris’ death, especially after losing Joe. Steve has had enough pain foe awhile. I do have total faith in Alex and am sure it will be an emotional character driven episode that will be awesome…like everything he does. Can’t wait to see his vision come to life!

  10. I am really excited about this! I sense an amazing episode coming, directed and written by Alex. Everytime he had some influence on the show he made it better, no stuuuuuupid restauRANTS, no dannoyance, no redundant quickly forgotten storylines, just the focus on the one and only reason there is a 50 taskforce: the Steve McGarrett story! (Remember the champ box, anyone? All mysteries solved? Nope, nope and nope). So Alex picks some things from the shelf with all the topics and storylines show seems to have totally forgotten and creates something special. Steve’s SEAL days, his relationships lovewise, friendwise and mentorwise, the past influencing his present, all the things that built the extraordinary guy he is now. And despite all the horror he’s seen and suffered he became such a caring and altruistic man. And his mother, “I’ve got trust issues because of your behavior, mom” – “Ah, get over it” (the chutzpa of this woman!), has not much to do with this. Making people lie to him even in his adult life (as a freaking SEAL and Naval Intelligence strategist!), preferring a monstrous killer, who tortured him not only once, over her own flesh and blood…
Where was she after Joe, who was such a loyal friend, died and Steve had to deal with another loss, huh?
See? I really really don’t like Doris, but I love Alex and Christine together on my screen. From Steve’s first “Mom?” after twenty years of betrayal, the Alexpressions in this scene, to all the screentime these two amazing actors shared.
SEAL Steve and his family and SEAL history is what makes this show special. Show often forgets this.

  12. Many thanks for this post! Alex writing an epi with Doris may mean the end of H50. Who is more entitled than Alex to decide how he wants Steve’s relationship with his mom to end? In any case, the epi will be full of emotional content, hence full of wonderful Alexpressions.

I was just thinking that Alex should write and direct the series finale of Hawaii Five-0. Who better to do it than Alex? I don’t think this is the end of the series episode, but it sounds like a really important one. I hope it has a happy ending for Steve and Doris, or at least a bittersweet one where she once again heads off into the unknown, alive and well, on a new secret mission. We lost Joe. Please don’t let us lose Doris too.

  13. I really can’t wait for this one . I think it is sad that Alex writes and directs the best stories the ones we truly like to watch about love and the depth of the characters .I hope he continues to write more even sadly when Hawaii 50 is over But before then I hope the writers take his lead . One or two good stories about the task force past or present in each episode. some believable story lines , I’d love to see more of the island and the people, I am hoping this season is the best , Thanks for all you do here .

Thank you so much for this post, Foyeur. I am so looking forward to this episode. I know Alex will shine.
No matter who guest stars, or the rest of the cast, it’s Alex/Steve, who brings whatever “good” the show has.
Like leiCa, I am annoyed with the story lines that went nowhere. What about the episode where Aunt Deb married her boyfriend, and he left a package with Steve at the end?
As much as I hated the Doris character for what she did to her family, I’m very happy that Christine Lahti likes Alex a lot.

    • From the very first scene these two had together (“Mom?”) she was totally in awe of Alex facial expressions and she said so. She said something like (I’m paraphrasing here from memory) ‘I just had to look at his face and saw all the emotions there and then it was easy to just react…’.

They were transcendent from their very first scenes together. When he says “Mom?” His reaction still sends chills down my spine today. Those are amazingly powerful scenes.

Doris drives me crazy, but I love these two together.
