#HawaiiFive-0 (#H50) Star #AlexOLoughlin Revisits His Season 9 Exit Plan: ‘I’m Prepared to Be Reasonable’

Hawaii Five-0 front man Alex O’Loughlin has gone from a “no f–king way” stance on a potential Season 9 to being able to “realistically” see himself still running-and-gunning as Steve McGarrett.

By Matt Webb Mitovich

Almost a year-and-a-half ago, the Aussie actor echoed to TVLine his stance that he absolutely” would turn in his badge after the current Season 8, explaining:

“[Five-0] is an action show, I’m the main guy, and I defy anybody to do what I’ve done for as long I’ve done it and hold out the way I have. I was a fit, strong, healthy guy when I started the show, and I still am, but you sustain what you sustain.”

But in speaking with TVLine this Thursday — to preview his directorial debut, for Five-0‘s Friday, March 30 episode — O’Loughlin seemed more amenable to re-signing, with his contract due to explore this spring. So what changed since November 2016? Did he get a second wind?

“I don’t know that I’d say I got a ‘second wind’…,” he countered.

“But is there a way that I can realistically see a Season 9 being a part of my life? I think so.”

In the event that CBS aims to renew the procedural (which currently ranks fifth in the 18-to-49 demo out of the network’s 13 dramas), O’Loughlin figures he will need “a little help with scheduling” (e.g. juggling his workload as No. 1 on the call sheet with his role as father to the pair of fast-growing tykes he raises with wife Malia), all while he continues to manage the “pretty radical back injury” that has dogged him for years and still is treated with weekly PT.

“To be honest with you, mate, if you had asked me [about re-signing] two years ago, my answer would have been, like, ‘No f’–king way.’ I want a quality of life, and I want to be with my family,” O’Loughlin asserted. But since then, he half-chuckled,

“I’ve been able to put Humpty together again.”

“I am still very tired at the end of the season, and after almost 200 episodes of television,” he added.

But I can sort of quietly and sensibly sit back and go, ‘There’s a version where if CBS can make a deal and be reasonable, then I’m prepared to be reasonable, too.’”

And while O’Loughlin makes clear that his actual wife and kids come first, he also recognizes the extended workplace family that Five-0 employs.

“It’s a great show and a lot of people love it, but more importantly, we keep so many people employed in Hawaii who might otherwise be stacking boxes at a grocery mart,” he said.

“It’s hard to get work out here and this feeds a lot of families, so it’s a really good thing. It’s really, really important.”

“I’m sure there are [actors] that don’t let that affect them, it’s not part of their negotiation, but it is something I think about,” he continued.

“I come from a working-class family and the people I work with mean a lot to me. They’re really our ohana, so… if  we can make it all work, they are some of the reasons why it would be great.”

My thoughts

  • This is not really “new” news. Alex have said as much about it all in the Watch article last year in May already.
  • The weird level of nastiness about this article amongst the people on social media reached an ugly new high – or rather low for me.
  • Explaining ALL the reasons why you would consider to, or are changing your mind from 1½ years ago, seems quite reasonable to me. Especially if one of those reasons was debilitating injury problems and you have had real serious problems with trying to cope with handling the pain of injuries in the past. And that this time around you have had the choice or wisdom of better treatment and groundbreaking options to recover from it, rather that just killing the pain with addiction.
  • And if monetary reward and better terms are part of it, I hardly doubt if any of us would not do the same and consider it as part of the deal. Any job counselor would tell you that you need to know your worth and ask to be rewarded accordingly.
  • Since the early days it has not been a secret that Alex cares a lot about Hawaii and the welfare of the people of Hawaii and it is one of the many reason why we adore himso making the show’s job creation a part of his consideration, is not a really mind blowing new fact of martyrdom, as some would suggest.
  • We here at Intense Study can fully understand and appreciate why Alex would want to negotiate more time off from the show, BUT it is also very sad. I personally tolerate the mediocre writing for the show, of ‘numerous dropped story lines‘, of ‘unrealistic liver transplant recoveries’ and of ‘annoyingly stupid restaurant ideas’ (just to artificially create some bromance connection that has gone lost in nasty bickering a long long time ago), just because it is Alex job – with less of Alex in it, it might just become too much ….. or too little. 😦
  • And every year there are less and less real celebrity exposure or interviews, and less and less new real media articles about Alex as an actor, other than immediate news from or about Hawaii Five-0.  And we are really struggling with the fact that we struggle to support Alex’s only project at this time, with the present status quo of it. And that unfortunately makes us sad ….. and maybe not very good fangirls at the moment.
  • We are, with cautious anticipation, looking forward to Alex long-awaited directorial debut next Friday. Maybe, just maybe, in it there will be a breath of fresh air or a small start to changing the show’s status quo and /or Alex’s stagnating or limited profile as an artist while being only on this show. There is always hope ….

This comment—–“a little help with scheduling” is precisely what SC has now. The EP has said that scheduling is a nightmare with all the contractual days off some of the cast have. My guess is that he was referring to SC. This is what GP asked for but was refused. (And then we got Tani instead.).

Considering that AOL has gone public with his interview, I think his renewal may be just the formality of signing. All the hints being dropped makes me think S9 is just waiting to be announced. After next season, I hope AOL can find a more rewarding project for his career. Right now, he seems content to return to H50 with some modifications to his contract,

Maybe he is done or just wants to be a guest star a few times a season so he can pursue other things.

Perhaps there will be another full time character added to the cast. I want Handsome Harry to pick up the slack. He can carry the load when Alex directs. Steve and Harry have great chemistry together.

    • I am pretty sure he wants to be more than just a guest star. I think this interview made it obvious that he knows how important the show is for all the people involved. And he knows he’s playing an important part in this.
Once in a while taking his time out in an episode, maybe directing, maybe producing (???), I think that’s what he’s referring to. He seems to be a guy who knows that he’s having a great life, he is thankful, and because of that he’s thinking about the others.
And a big NO from me about Harry. Nope. He adds nothing new.

See my corrected post. I was referring to Scott, not to Alex. Of course Alex wants more than to be the occasional guest star. That would fit Scott, not Alex.

        And yes to Harry!!!! Yes,Yes,Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Ah, now I get it! Yes, you’re right. I think stupid meatballbusiness is SC’s way out.
And no to Harry!!!! No no no! LOL.
Actually I think he is boring, sorry. No layers.
And – we’ve got Junior now. He is a SEAL too. A baby SEAL with probably not that many missions on his shoulders, but still.
The last epis of this season at least look pretty interesting. And by the looks of it #24 should really be the finale episode, just like the last season. But that can’t happen… for reasons…

          Like

    • I hope he’ll still be the central character. I’ve not seen Junior at work & don’t know who Harry is, but Alex is the only one who can keep the spirit of H50 alive.Nothing happened when GP or DDK went or with SC present guest star status, but imagine the show without lots of Alex!

“Maybe he is done or just wants to be a guest star a few times a season so he can pursue other things”. This line does not pertain to Alex. It to refers to Scott but did not copy entirely.

The full line is: Scott is another matter. Maybe he is done or just wants to be a guest star a few times a season so he can pursue other things.

Sorry for the confusion. One cup of coffee in the A.M. is evidently not sufficient to wake me up.

I couldn’t believe Scott signed for an eighth season. He totally surprised me. I HATE the restaurant idea, it’s going nowhere, it’s a financial black hole which will bankrupt everyone involved. PLEASE don’t make that Danny’s exit strategy! Where are Rachel and Grace? If Rachel wants to return to New Jersey, then Danny will follow. She only came to Hawaii because she married Stan. Stan’s gone now. My dream would be for Danny and Rachel to reunite as a couple and head off into the sunset again, maybe back to Jersey.

Rachel has a degree from the London School of Economics, one of the most prestigious universities in the world. It’s time for Rachel to get a job!! If she and Danny ever hope to put Grace and Charlie through college, that family needs two incomes! Maybe back in Jersey. Danny has run his course as a useful character on Five-O.

Whatever reason they choose as an exit strategy for Danny is fine with me, as long as he exits. I would prefer he opened the restaurant in NJ with Uncle Vito and sent the occasional Christmas card. I hope he does reunite with Rachel because it’s no big thing lying to your ex-husband for three years about Charlie not being his son, or lying to Stan, that Charlie is his son. Some lies are more forgivable then others in this fandom.

I wouldn’t worry about Rachel needing to work. I am sure she can get a very nice settlement from Stan since he is the one seeking the divorce, and if he is still listed as Charlie’s father on the birth certificate, he may have to pay child support, too.

Rachel cheated on Stan with Danny, she had Danny’s baby, she lied to Stan, and Stan finally realized that Rachel had always really been in love with Danny. Stan raised Danny’s son for three years. Hmmm, I don’t think there will be a big settlement! Stan could kick Rachel to the curb. She lived on his wealth for many years. Enough is enough.

In spite of all that, I really like Rachel and I love Rachel and Danny. People live emotionally messy lives and do stupid things. One of the reasons that Rachel left Danny was because she couldn’t handle the terror she felt every day, wondering if her husband would be killed in the line of duty. So she settled for someone who loved her and who provided financial and emotional support. The marriage was never really good. Stan was gone all the time, traveling the world, doing deals. So, it was a rocky marriage. Not an excuse for anything Rachel did, but often the case in the real world.

It could be a good exit strategy for Danny. If he opens a restaurant, let it be in Jersey!

I think Scott prefers living in LA. His family and friends are all there as well as the projects he enjoys. H50 has been low priority for a while. but face it, a paycheck is a paycheck. Hawaii is a beautiful place to live with a much more relaxed lifestyle, not to mention clean, smog free air. He could have easily moved his family to Hawaii if he wanted to, but chose not to do that. Instead he negotiated a reduced work schedule. I can’t imagine what more they could offer him then he ready has, and so, if he wishes not to re-sign or CBS follows what happened with DDK and Grace, he may do what James MacArthur did for the final season of the original H50–just not show up.

Kaycee is a costume designer at CBS in Hollywood, so Scott can’t move the family to LA. She has a career which she wants to pursue in LA. I do agree, Scott does love LA. His life, family and lifelong friends are all there. He loves to surf in Malibu. Hawaii is a place to visit and work until he can go home again. We know that Alex has totally fallen in love with Hawaii and now considers it his home. Scott’s heart has always been in LA.

Did James MacArthur do that? Never knew that. The final year of the original Hawaii Five-0 had a completely new cast. Jack Lord was the only original actor from the rest of the series. They could easily do that again, especially it if officially is their last year. Then maybe they could bring other cast members back again (Grace, DDK, Scott) for guest appearances to wrap up story lines.

Yes, that is what James MacArthur did. They also killed Chin and the actor who played Kono was fired. They were always making cast changes.

Grace may come back to finish her story with Adam but I doubt we will ever see DDk again. That bridge has been burned.

Any scoop on Catherine’s return to Hawaii Five-0? —Jen
When Catherine (played by Michelle Borth) returns in the Friday, April 13 episode to enlist McGarrett and his particular set of skills to track down some hidden munitions, “We got to get a little closure,” Alex O’Loughlin says. Having previously danced around the fact that he was about to propose when she skipped out of town on a secret mission, this time they get a bit more into the missed opportunity. Afterward, O’Loughlin says, “They sort of go, ‘We always were great friends; maybe we shouldn’t have slept together in the first place. But it’s good to be friends again.’”

Barb: You posted this on the other thread, so I thought I would copy and paste my reply here too.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up that McRoll is dead. Alex has used the word closure before and been wrong What I am reading from this quote is that they have finally started to have that talk about their relationship that many of us have asked Pl about. If this was the final season of the show, then I would expect them to marry but since it looks like a renewal to me, PL will string us along for another year, because he can’t have a married McGarrett any more than he can have a married Danny. (unless it is that character’s final season and then Rachel is welcome to him.). . Also, Alex says he does not watch the show and the editing maybe quite different, Also, as the EP has pointedly said,. Alex only knows what is in the current script he gets, not what is in the future scripts. I think McRoll is alive and well and will be seen in S9.

Since PL has also said he has a plan for McG’s LL/endgame but doesn’t want to have his TL explode. He has only three viable choices for that kind of reaction from the fans.–McLynn who he has said is not in McG’s future, McDanno, which is never going to happen and McRoll., The introduction of a 4th character is unlikely. .

Maybe the most telling thing about this whole controversy is that it could have been so easily avoided if he wanted McRoll to die. The character could have been killed but he chose not to do that. Instead he brought her back in 525 which looked like the final season, admitted she was written into 625 but took her out when he got the early renewal for a S7. He wants the character to be there until the end. He has said that.

BTW, this would not be the first time a particular writer from one of these online sites injected a personal bias into their reporting. They can pick and choose what lines to use and conveniently omit things which may change the meaning. We are not talking Pulitzer Prize reporting here.

Gewoon omdat Steve de enige man in haar leven is gebleken.

I have tremendous respect and admiration for the works and the person of Alex, I wish he could show more of his ability to act than he did until today.
I know that life is full of traps and that getting to where was not easy, but also that in his time of rest he considered new experiences and look at his work as an actor with other eyes.
Sign the ninth season, but do other work as well, he can and has capacity for it.
Go Alex, keep chasing your dreams, everyone, fly, continue to be a good example to your children. Be honest, sensitive, kind and dreams never end.

I wish that CBS would OK 22 episodes rather than 25. That would give Alex, another 6 weeks off. If Alex had 4 months off, perhaps he’d sign to do other projects, although I think he wants to spend time with family more than doing other projects. As long as he’s on the show, he doesn’t have time to do other projects. He just sleeps for half the time he’s off. So, I’m torn. I would like him to do other things, too. If we get a 9th Season, hopefully it will be the last one, so that Alex is free to do other projects and we can see him on the big screen again.

I know I haven’t posted in a while, but I’m still watching and keeping up with your posts. I have started following Alex O’Loughlin online blog. I’m seeing that there talking about episode 25. I know initially they were talking about 23 episodes and then that got increased to 24. I haven’t heard about 25 but IMDB episode guide shows 25 and if you count next weeks new episode 25 would make every Friday a new episode until the May 18 finale.
Not to mention the would keep the flow of milestone episodes being the 7th episode of the next season, not that would make a huge difference to CBS. Can anyone confirm that this season got extended two episodes or have they heard that. I would welcome more episodes it means more opportunities to see Alex.

Any idea WHY they do that? It’s so weird.

        Like

        • Not really weird at all and easy to explain.
They want Scott /Danny to be in the final episode of each season, but it is Scott’s time off – so they switch the filming schedules so that Scott/ Danny can be in the final.
People do not always realise it, but Scott works 2 weeks and then takes 2 weeks off. That means that he is not available for 50% of the filming time during a season. That means it is way more than just the 5 episodes that he is not in during the season – that is why in many episodes of each season, he is also not really there all the time.
This scheduling started in Season 4 already – a whole year before his daughter was even born. Although in those days I think he work 1 week and then took 1 week off.
They used a lot of green screen shots and stand in actors to mask all this over the years – like with Billy’s funeral in Epi 4:05.
There is one spesific scene that I have picked up on, with both Danny and Steve in it, having a conversation with each other and the team, while Alex and Scott were never even on the set together – all done with stand in actors.
If you look closely you can see that Scott was also never even on set together with Tom Berenger, when they filmed the scenes with Danny’s father, played by Tom.

I think SCs “no show job” might be part of the problem. Back when DDK and GP were looking to make same salary as The other two stars, wasn’t it noted that AOL and SC were making the same amount. So, if Alex is showing up everyday as first on the call sheet, and SC is barely phoning in his roll, then how is that fair. Not to mention the expense and the extra work for everyone involved shooting with stand ins just to accomadate Scotts schedule.

            • Hi Marian
I reread my comment from 20 months ago to which you have replied to.

I stand by my words and by my opinion of the truth at the time, and which I still regard as the truth, just as much then, as it is still now.
I see nothing that are not true in what I mentioned,

No doubt that Scott give a lot to others, and his work with the disabled kids and that one surf charity with which he is involved with, is commendable. There are most probably more of which I am not aware.

I just wonder what most employers will say if all employees negotiate to have half their time available to be with their family, do charity work and their own projects? I know actors are free to negotiate and that is different, but I just wonder about it…..

Unfortunately, I do not share your devotion to Scott, his skills as an actor or his decisions in regards to his contract on H50. And it is actually his most devoted fans who suffer the most with him being on screen for so little of the time. And when his part of the story seems dull because of it and that makes it worse.
I really feel sorry for them.
Not sure how I would have handled it myself if I was such a fan. I would most probably have given up by now.

I feel everybody is entitled to their own opinion, whether others are tired of it or not.
The truth remains the truth for me, and if I feel it necessary here, I will share what I believe is true.
And we can leave it at that!

I’m sure that the actors, crew and staff did everything possible to make this a great experience for Alex and they emotionally supported him so that he could relax into the job. And the actors did their best to give him great performances. The episode looks intriguing. Danny’s story looks compelling and emotional. I wonder if this is a “what the world would look like if Steve never headed Five-O,” i.e., a take-off on “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
