Kokua For The Philippines
A benefit concert & telethon broadcast to the world from Hawaii on Dec 15, 2013 to benefit victims of the super typhoon Haiyan
- What was it all about:
“Kokua For The Philippines,” a Hawaii-based radio, television and Internet benefit concert for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, will be held on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 from noon to 5 p.m. The event, staged by Clear Channel Media + Entertainment Hawaii and Oceanic Time Warner Cable, will take place at the Great Lawn at Hilton Hawaiian Village and will be broadcast live on local radio and television stations and via the Internet.and television stations and via the Internet.

Celebrities also scheduled to appear and help with phone bank duties include Mark Dacascos and Cast & Crew members from the hit CBS drama HAWAII FIVE-0. Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie and Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell will also be participating in the show.
- What happened at Kokua for the Philippines Event:
Hawaii Five-0 Ohana came out to lend their support and raise much need Red Cross donations for the victims of Haiyan via the phone bank.

“Kokua for the Philippines” organizers had to quickly revamp their benefit today as severe weather came across Oahu and cancelled the outdoor concert and televised portion of the fundraiser. The event was moved inside and continued as a radio and internet broadcast and raised $1,758,386.42 as of 4:30 p.m. to benefit the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

- About the name:
- Kokua – Hawaiian word for mutual assistance or pitching in. Also may be used to describe general assistance, help.
- Kokua is a Hawaiian word, that translates as “extending loving, sacrificial help to others for their benefit, not for personal gain”
- To me, Kokua means “aloha in action”
