Aloha to #H50 Cast at Hickam Elementary! (Nov 2011)

There are just about two weeks left for you to donate to the Children’s Hospital in LA, and with the donation to enter and stand a change to win a trip to Hawaii and to visit the set of Hawaii Five-0. Details about it here.

As part of our reminder of the charity that you will take part in, we will try to do a number of post about past goodwill events, that we have not covered yet, in which Alex and or the Hawaii Five-0 cast participated.

Taking you on a trip down memory lane again …… back to November 2011

We found this gem posted by a lady in Hawaii.

(Remember as usual with all our posts, the link to the original story is in the name.)

Aloha On My Mind

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

I spent an hour within 5 feet of Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Masi Oka.

Let me share how this came about ….

my son’s elementary school is located on base.  It is an “open” campus with outside access to each classroom.  Two weeks ago, the PTO requested volunteers for a “gardening” project on Sunday, November 13, at 8 am.   The early morning adventure paid off as it was part of Service Nation’s 11 projects across the country to honor Veterans’ Day.  From its website at http://www.servicenation.org,

As we packed up the tools, Service Nation’s organizer, Chris, announced that the students would plant fruit, vegetables, and native Hawaiian plants as part of a day long event, including an outdoor assembly with

Laird Hamilton, Hawaii’s own surfing legend
Gabrielle Reece, beach volleyball champion
THE CAST OF HAWAII FIVE O.

On Monday morning, I arrived 45 minutes before the outdoor assembly.  As their vans approached the school, I crossed the street to stand behind the students selected to welcome the cast with Kukui nut leis.   It was somewhat surreal to watch the cast exit the vans like normal people.  Unlike the rabid fans at the H5O premiere on Waikiki Beach, nobody was screaming at Hickam Elementary.

I kept my eye on the VIP room where they met school officials.   When they reemerged and walked toward the new garden, I followed as if I was supposed to be there.   Alex and Scott worked together with students in one flower bed while Daniel and Masi worked together in another.  These guys were great with the students, asking them questions and praising their efforts.

Alex, of course, spoke in his native Aussie accent.  He challenged Daniel and Masi to a “garden off” to see who had the best garden.  As the cast walked towards the assembly area, I was walking behind Alex – what a sight!  Let me say it again, it was surreal.   It was clear that the cast was there for the kids so I didn’t ask to take a picture with them …. just yet.

During the assembly, we learned at the American Heart Association sponsored The Teaching Garden and would be working with the Bishop Museum (Hawaii’s own cultural icon) to maintain the native plants.   The principal then introduced Laird HamiltonHawaii’s own surfing enthusiast.  He talked about the importance of good nutrition and giving the best fuel to your best vehicle – your body, “Take care of your body and your body will talk care of you.”

Laird introduced his wife, Gabrielle Reece, who led the students in “playing”, i.e., exercising.  The H50 cast laughed as the kids went wild under Gabrielle’s direction.  She then introduced Daniel Dae Kim at the podium while Alex, Scott, and Masi pushed wheelbarrows in front of the stage, one was filled with vegetables, one was filled with fruit, and one was filled with books.   Daniel shared how he would apply what he learned today from The Teaching Garden to his own effort plant a coconut tree.  He then challenged the children to take care of their own “trees” – bodies – and even their “coconuts” – heads – by filling them with knowledge from school.  The producers of Hawaii Five O donated the books in the wheelbarrow.

Check out the video of their presentation at this the end

The students moved to an open area to perform their “grow” dance to Black Eyed Peas’ I’VE GOT A FEELING.   Some very smart military personnel created a line to take pictures with the cast.  Just as it was my turn to pose with Alex, another woman thought it was her turn.  Normally I would have let the other woman go first, but I had a mission that day!

I also took a picture with Scott.

My son asked Scott for his autograph.

Just as the crew was getting ready to leave, I spotted Masi walking in my direction.   I asked a woman nearby to take my picture – I think the woman was Daniel’s wife.

The generals’ spouses were interested in The Teaching Garden so I escorted them to it.  I didn’t want to watch (and cry) as the H50 crew left.

Have you met a famous person?

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

  • A big thank you to Kim for that wonderful story that she posted back then.
  • We also added a video of the Hawaii Five-0 actors participation on the day. It includes Alex, Scott and Masi with the wheelbarrows full of fruit and vegetables and books. Daniel making a speech about how he will be, with lots of fertilizer, growing his coconut tree to have a big trunk (to the amusement of Alex, Scott and Masi). Also on the footage you can see the actors helping the kids to plant their gardens.
  • There was also delightful footage of the kids doing their exercises, but we deleted it to avoid copyright infringement because of the music used for it.
  • We also apologize in advance for the sound quality, but the original video was made with the double sound track from the separate footage, overlapping.

Trivia

  • On the footage of the day, we could see that the actors were accompanied by their partners. Mia was there with Daniel, Kacy (in a blue dress) was there with Scott and Malia (in a black shirt-dress and hat) & Spike (2 yrs old at the time) was there with Alex. (At first we as fans did not notice Malia on the footage. It was only a week later at the GQ Awards that Alex introduced Malia as his partner to the public. In retrospect we then notice her & Spike on the Vet’s Day footage)

#AlexOLoughlin in a Nutshell …..

I was looking for some pictures and information for one of my posts, when I again noticed this ‘ode’ to Alex that was written by an old friend and a fellow Alex-blogger in 2012. She wrote it for her Tumblr and WordPress site H50BAMF, which later became AOLww.

I realised that it is still as true today as it was back then – even with some added Alex-virtues that we can maybe list. Or rather more evidence over the 6 years since then, that just re-inforced what she mentioned here.

I found that so many of the old stuff are vanishing online because sites closed down or new fans did not know it ever existed and are still there to read. I thought it might be a good idea to repost it here for you all to read …….

Alex is No Tortured Artist

When you’re happy by nature, its contagious.

Every time I see a new rash of interviews or events, I always come away with “feelings”.  You see, for me it’s hard to support someone’s work when I don’t like them as human beings.  Granted, most of us don’t really KNOW these people, but you keep your eyes and ears open enough, you get a pretty good idea of their general worth.  After this whole recent bullshit dust up about him being ungrateful to his fans because of a poorly timed/worded/edited statement, it made me reflect on the actor that I’ve grown to love and appreciate over the past couple years.

This is what I see:

~He doesn’t take himself so seeeeeriously! He’s just an actor. He has a job to do.  He does it with enthusiasm and graciousness and then he goes home.

~He values his private life and the privacy of his loved ones. In this day and age of reality TV stars and social media, that’s increasingly rare. Social media is powerful and it could make him a household name if he played it right. Yet, he values just being “Alex”.

~While he’s charitable and supports several causes, his big cause is his own family.  Too often celebrities spend their time taking care of others while their own family falls apart. Now I’m not saying there is anything wrong at all about doing charity work…celebrities really need to put that face forward.  But it does you no good to try and save the world when you can’t take care of what’s your own.  I like that he gets that.  Don’t spend so much time saving the neighborhood while your own house is on fire.

~He’s self-admittedly not perfect and we all know he took a really big ‘fall’ this year BUT he got up with grace and honor and that’s the most inspiring of all.  The falling down doesn’t matter, it’s the getting back up and fighting that counts. It’s hard to even imagine what he went through before asking for help. He’s always said he was a fighter and he proved he’s as good as his word.  Good for you, Alex.

~He compliments others freely and genuinely, even though he gets little in return. This is really something I admire so greatly and it really hit me watching the S1 H50 DVD.  He really is good at singing the praises of his co-workers, actors, directors, minor actors, set people, etc.

~He can be honest without being ‘brutal’.  There is no weakness in speaking honestly but tactfully.  There is more strength in building up than tearing down.  I wish more people got this.  Respect is sexy.

~He’s open and friendly with fans at all times. Not just when he has something to promote.  Just ask any of the fans who have run into him this summer.

~He’s often written off as just a pretty face by nameless myopic critics who refuse to look past the obvious.  Yet you will never hear him use the “poor me, I suffer for my art” card.  Instead you’ll find him giving 150% on a daily basis, with a smile on his face, genuinely grateful for the success that he has and making millions of his fans happy.

My final thoughts on this is that nice guys may never come in first, but I don’t believe they finish last either.  Somewhere in the middle is our

Alex O’Loughlin: hard working, grateful actor, devoted father and son, all around decent human being.

In my opinion, there is no greater compliment than that.

#AlexOLoughlin – Live on the Red Carpet (September 2010)

For this one we go right to the beginning, to where it all started for Hawaii Five-0Sunset On The Beach #1 in 2010.

We included two videos to cover most of the event of that first Premiere.

Both also included short interviews with Alex.

Malika: I’ve got Alex O’Loughlin here with me.

Alex: [Alex waves to somebody]

Malika: So, what is it like being here in Hawaii, doing a show like this?

Alex: It’s amazing. It’s even more amazing seeing this in Hawaii. I mean you don’t sort of think about Red Carpets and huge crowds in Hawaii.

So it’s …. I’m seeing all this and I’m seeing the… the sunset and the ocean. It’s crazy.. it’s amazing … it’s amazing

Malika: You’ve been to premieres before I’m assuming – Have you ever been to a premiere like this, under the stars?

Alex: No … no … it’s …. Like I said, it’s amazing. I didn’t know what to expect … and it’s … I’m really touched and really excited to be a part of this. I think it’s a …. It’s such a great show and I’m just really glad to be here.

Malika: So, I know you’ve gotten this question a lot, but the difference between what it was and what it is now. What do you think people are really going to appreciate, and what is new?

Alex: Look, I think … you know the old show was a long time ago. And that was a whole different time in television. You know, we have a lot of new technology, we have a lot of  ….

Like TV today is a very different animal. And we’ve got all the good stuff that we have in TV making and film making today, and we’ve got a reboot of all these characters that we’ve grown to love over the years. And so,  we brought it together and we’ve got a great show coming your way.

Malika: It’s a little sexier too, huh?

Alex: I think so.

Malika: [Giggles]

Do you have to speak Pidgin on the show?

Alex: A little bit, but I’m not very good at it. I speak Mandarin in the Pilot too. I still don’t know what I said.

Malika: [Laughs] Well, thank you so much for that interview

Alex: You’re welcome.

Malika: We’ll let you go along. I know you are a very busy man at this point.

Back to you guys Keahi and Tannya.

This is only the transcript from the first part of the video of Alex’s interview.

On the rest of the video there is also an interview with Peter Lenkov, Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

  • On her blog, Malika later wrote:

The highlight and the absolutely most terrifying thing that’s ever happened to me LIVE was interviewing the star, Alex O’Loughlin, who plays Steve McGarrett. I wasn’t pegged as someone on the news team that would be interviewing the big stars but I guess I was in the right place at the right time.

I was standing on the red carpet and Alex walked up… all of a sudden, through my IFB (ear piece), I hear my producer yelling in my ear! He’s screaming “grab him! grab him!”… I was so startled, I literally just obeyed my orders and reached out to grab his arm. My heart was pounding… this was LIVE… and I had not prepared questions for the stars since I didn’t anticipate interviewing them.

The rest was a blur… it was thrilling and awesome and one of those moments I’ll remember forever

  • The second video is a beautiful report by Heidi Chang about the Premiere:

Heidi Chang takes you to the world premiere of the new Hawaii Five-0, Hawaiian style. Meet the show’s cast members: Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park and Taryn Manning as they stroll down the red carpet on Waikiki Beach, and also the shows executive producers: Peter Lenkov, Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

Also joining them on stage: the daughters of Leonard Freeman, who created the original show, and the president of CBS Television studios, David Stapf. CBS and the City and County of Honolulu put on a special Sunset on the Beach event to celebrate the series’ reboot, featuring island musicians including Willie K, Makana, Tamaine Gardner, and the University of Hawaii Marching Band playing the iconic Hawaii Five-0 theme song. Heidi Chang produced, wrote and narrated the Hawaii Five-0 Premiere Special for Honolulu Municipal Television. Mahalo to the Hawaii Five-0 cast and crew, entertainers and fans, who made this such a fun and cool premiere! And thank you for watching. Aloha.

  • Here is what Alex had to say on the red carpet in the video:

Alex: I’m humbled. I’m deeply grateful. And I’m really overwhelmed. But it’s amazing. I mean, I feel  … I feel like I’m a part of the community, you know.

I’ve been here for a while now. I’ve been here for a few months and I’ve kind of felt like an outsider. And tonight I feel like …. It’s awesome.

  • As part of the video, there are short interviews with the main cast, as well as the producers. They also acknowledge the actors from the old Hawaii Five-O who were present.
  • The main cast members were welcomed on stage by Peter Lenkov, and Daniel Dae Kim was given the opportunity to thank everybody.

#AlexOLoughlin at SOTB over the years – It’s a Poll!

We have done so many of the interviews and speeches from Sunset on the Beach lately to update our archives and I thought that it might be a fun idea to let you all choose which look of Alex at SOTB over the years, did you like best. With it I have some trivia just for some added fun. Hope you enjoy it and also the pictures that were chosen – most of them for a specific reason. (And remember to click on them to see them better)

SOTB Season 1

(13 September 2010)

  • Clothes: Alex was dressed in a black suit with a white open neck shirt without a tie.
  • Assisting  Alex on the red carpetDiana Jackson his PA at that time.
  • Family and Friends: At the first SOTB Alex was accompanied by his girlfriend that he had at that time, actress Amber Clayton.
  • Fellow Cast & their families: All the main cast members, Scott, Daniel and Grace were there, as well as Taryn Manning. (There is not a lot of footage available, and I am therefore not sure who else attended.)

SOTB Season 2

(10 September 2011)

  • Clothes: A dark suit with a dark shirt and no tie. And a white pocket-handkerchief.
  • Assisting  Alex on the red carpetDiana Jackson his PA at that time.
  • Family & Friends: Alex did not bring any recognisable guests, but his friend and stand-in double Sam Gould sat with him.
  • Fellow Cast & their familiesScott attended with his girlfriend Kacy, Daniel was there with his wife Mia and the children, Grace was there with her husband Phil. Masi Oka and Lauren German also attended.

SOTB Season 3

(23 September 2012)

  • Clothes: This year Alex chose a light grey suit with a white shirt and a brown pocket-handkerchief with white dots.
  • Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Kristen Rowsey was Alex’s PA at the time.
  • Family & Friends: He attended with Malia who was far along in her pregnancy with Lion and her son Spike, and a number of her family (including Malia’s father and stepmother, and also her brother Daniel and his wife Natalie). And of course at the time Saxon also stayed in Hawaii and attended the event with them as well.
  • Fellow Cast & their families: At the time, Scott was not there, because his mother passed away during that week (but Kacy attended). Grace was also not there. But Daniel and his wife Mia as well as Masi Oka  and Michelle Borth attended.

SOTB Season 4

(26 September 2013)

  • Clothes: Dark Grey suit with a white shirt and a tie (it is rather easy to spot the pictures from this SOTB, as it was the only time that Alex wore a tie. I loved it!)
  • Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Kristen Rowsey was still Alex’s PA at the time
  • Family & Friends: Alex attended with Malia and Spike and Malia’s father.
  • Fellow Cast & their families: As usual Daniel and his wife Mia attended, but neither Scott nor Grace was at the event – Grace was pregnant at the time. This was of course the first year that Chi McBride attended as part of the team. Michelle Borth was also there.
  • Link to Speech: #H50 – #AlexOLoughlin speaks at “Sunset on the Beach”

SOTB Season 5

(13 September 2014)

  • Clothes: This year Alex chose a dark suit with a dark open neck shirt.
  • Family & Friends: Malia and Spike.
  • Fellow Cast & their families: This year the main cast were back again in full force with Scott  and Grace back at the event. Grace brought her husband again this time. As usual Mia was there with Daniel. And of course Chi and Jorge.
  • Link to speech: #AlexOLoughlin thanks Hawaii at SOTB Season 5 Premiere.

SOTB Season 6

(12 September 2015)

  • Clothes: Dark suit with a shade of blue and a dark open neck shirt.
  • Family & Friends: Malia and her brother Daniel attended with Alex
  • Fellow Cast & their families: As usual Daniel was there with wife Mia, but this time Grace was there without her husband. And then of course Chi and Jorge. Interesting to see that a second year in a row, Peter Lenkov’s wife Audie, also attended (sitting next to Malia in the front row)

SOTB Season 7

(23 September 2016)

  • Clothes: Once again Alex chose a dark suit, but this time with V-neck black sweater.
  • Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Ryan
  • Family and Friends: Malia attended with Alex.
  • Fellow Cast & their families: Not many pictures of the cast available, but we know that Scott was there with Kacy. And as usual Daniel and his wife Mia attended with Chi and Jorge as well.

SOTB Season 8

(10 November 2017)

  • Clothes: This time Alex wore a dark suit again, but with a round neck black sweater.
  • Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Ryan
  • Family & Friends: As with most of the other stars, Alex did not bring any guests this year.
  • Fellow Cast & their families: Most of the stars (Scott, Chi, Meaghan, Anthony and Jorge) attended alone, apart from Beulah who brought his wife.
  • Link to speech#AlexOLoughlin and #H50 – Sunset On The Beach (#8)

Each and every year Alex looked like a star and gave his very best to the fans and also his colleagues.

Which year was your favourite for the way Alex dressed?
