240 Days of #AlexOLoughlin as #H50 Steve McGarrett (Part 23)

After deliberation, we decided to rather start a new Facebook Page connected to our blog. We are not really keen on running a public Facebook Group and will most probably soon close the group or make it private. Some fans do not understand the difference between a group and a page, but from an admin point of view, a page is much easier to handle.

You will find our new page here: The Intense Study of Alex O’Loughlin

We continue sharing the social media posts of the past weeks.

Remembering the 240 episodes of Hawaii Five-0 by sharing a picture from each episode together with some thoughts shared by Alex and others at the time and over the years ……

“I don’t really speak to the writers because it’s frustrating for me when we see things differently. I just try to do my best with what they give me. They have their own ideas, and I have my own ideas.

Frankly, I think that if my ideas were written down, we probably wouldn’t still be on the air. I don’t know how to make a successful TV show. So, I’m open to it. As long as it’s smart, thought-out, creative and interesting, I’m down with it.” – Alex O’Loughlin, Collider, 4 November 2016

“As consuming a schedule and as the expectations on me continue on something like this, the husband and father that I’ve been able to maintain and continue to be is what I’m most proud of. The relationships I’ve had with my wife and children are what mean the most to me. It’s hard to maintain that when you’re doing a job like this. It’d be a lot easier if I was selfish and didn’t think about anyone in the hours that I have off. On the same side of that coin, having my wife and kids fills me and fuels me and gives me what I need to get out of bed the next day.” – Alex O’Loughlin, ETOnline.com. 3 November 2016

“Doing something like this is the most unbalanced thing I’ve ever done and that’s why we get paid really well, for it is your whole f**king life is going to be upside down while you’re doing it, and I think that’s why there’s a finite cap. It’s a wonderful show and the audience deserves another year after this one.” Alex O’Loughlin, ETOnline.com., 3 November 2016

“As long as people are watching the show, we would keep going. If Alex elects not to come back, that’s obviously going to be his choice. But we’re moving forward as if the show’s going to keep going. I’m pretty certain that we’re going to at least have one more year. Even if we did end [with] Season 8, the idea of doing eight seasons on a reboot of a show is pretty spectacular. But we’re planning on moving forward. We’ve had no conversations with him. Sometimes when you get to this part of the season, exhaustion sets in, especially when you’re celebrating the 150th episode. But some of that could be just being tired, a product of the fact that you haven’t had a lot of time off. But yeah, we’re moving forward as if we’ll be on the air for hopefully more than another year.– Peter Lenkov, 11 November 2016

Picture from #HawaiiFive0 Episode 7:25 – Broadcast on 12 May 2017

We actually left out the first sentence of this quote from Peter. After he was asked: “Alex O’Loughlin has indicated that Season 8 would be his last. Do you know why he would say that? Have you had a conversation about an end date for the show?”

He said: Positioning himself for a better deal? I don’t know” and then continued with the rest of the quote above.

If you compare the dates of the last 2 quotes you will see that at the time Alex said they were being paid well, while Peter thought he might be bargaining for a better deal. While at that time at the end of Season 7, two other main cast members were actually asking for more money but rejected the reported substantial raise that was offered to them respectively.

Maybe all that will give some answer to the next quote from Alex ……

“There’s an energy in the land here; they actually have a name for it. It’s called “Mana”. And it’s like the power of the “Aina”; of the land. And I don’t always feel it ….. Or I’m not always aware of it, because I get very busy 10 months of the year, frantically shooting, and trying to remember things. And trying not to get caught up in politics, you know. But then when I stop, mainly in the off seasons, I can go somewhere quiet, like this, and … and sort of tap back into it. And that’s what inspires me out here.” Alex O’Loughlin, CBS Watch Magazine, Feb 2017

“The new actors that we have are fantastic. Beulah and Meaghan they are really … they are wonderful. They brought a new enthusiasm and you know … they are younger and they have a lot of energy. And it is just a breath of fresh air.” Alex O’Loughlin, SOTB, November 2017

“I’ve had the great fortune of being exposed to a lot of Navy SEAL’s, who’ve helped me with the character. They’re terrific guys. But being like them requires a specific sort of energy, and I have to manufacture that energy,” – Alex O’Loughlin, CBS Watch Magazine, 2017

  1. Awesome quotes. One of my questions answered!

  2. I don´t understand the difference between a group and a page either but whatever. 😎  I´m happy you´ll continue with your group.
Those are awesome quotes again. Alex is such a family man, a dedicated, caring and loving husband and father and deep into the spirituality of the land.
And he was so invested in the show. Who f.e. would and could train with RL Navy Seals and make them friends for life? That amount of dedication is amazing. Respect!
About Peter Lenkov´s comment: I calmed down but I still don´t like this comment and I´m not a fan of Peter Lenkov. So he thought, he can replace Alex? The man who gave all of himself to make the show spectacular? Who didn´t care about his health and injured himself so he was in so much pain that he couldn´t even get up from bed at times. Oh yeah, he just wanted to position himself for a better deal. Of course. He wanted much more money, no action scenes anymore, a private spa on set and half of the year off. *sarcasm intended* PL´s comment puts me off. It lacks respect for Alex and for what he has done for the show. And why didn´t he even bother to talk to Alex and just jumped to conclusions??? Of course Alex wanted a new contract. How could he go on doing action scenes when he was barely able to move because of his back? And of course, trying to negotiate better payment is no crime – if that´s what he wanted. He said they were paied very well – . Everybody would do that esp. when you put everything you have, your health included, into a very successfull show. And btw: H5O was still a good show with or without action scenes (which also could be done by Alex´s stuntman – just to mention) and without shirtless scenes because Alex is an awesome actor. And btw: Alex`s „DNA“ was one of the best episodes of the show and the storyline he wrote for another episode was terrific. See how easily he could be replaced?
And no, Mr.Lenkov: You couldn´t go on with the show without him. H5O is McGarrett – McGarrett was Alex. Without Alex no H5O! That easy. Many, many fans would have stopped watching the show if Alex had left. I am one of them. Alex knew that. That´s why he put himself on the line and did 3 more years. Show some appreciation and respect for your No1, Mr. Lenkov! We fans do.
End of rant. Talking to myself: Calm down! Ommmm….. . 🙏

Wow! Feeling better after having let the steam off ? 😅

You know, I think that all along, PL was aware that they couldn’t go on with the show without Alex. Of course, I don’t know if Alex had money in mind when he said that S8 would be his last one, or if his health was his main concern at the time. If he did want a better deal and got it, I’m happy for him. He deserved it. Well, we’ll never know.

I’m sure PL positively knew he couldn’t go on without Alex, though. But he had to save his face and show that he was a tough producer, the one in charge, the one to decide, even if it meant “killing” his leading man. Only he was smart enough to realize that “killing” McGarrett meant killing the show. Obviously, the audience ratio would have dropped dramatically had Alex disappeared. Too many fans, like you and me, would have stopped watching. I’m no fan of PL either, but I must admit he knows his business, so we got two additional seasons.

Alex’s comment about speaking to the writers is very revealing. The amount of frustration Alex has had to swallow must be amazing. I can’t help thinking of the maddening restaurant story line, for ex. Just imagine: “I just try to do my best with what they give me.” ! I still suffer for him each time I re-watch those awful scenes with their inane dialogues. It must have been though for a man with such an exquisite artistic sensibility.

And immediately after saying that, his kind heart speaking, soothing the writer’s bruised souls: If his ideas were written down, they probably wouldn’t be still on the air.

And then, DNA. It was almost like a master class of how to write an epi where all the right ingredients are concentrated: an interesting, well developed story, intelligent dialogues, a wise use of the main features of two of the most prominent characters (a Navy Seal/cop with a spy mother), a perfect choice of music, shall I go on?

After watching DNA, who would be surprised that Alex was at times frustrated with what was given to him in terms of stories?

Thank you Foyeur, for the new Facebook link. I can never get
enough of the photos of, an insightful comments by Alex. He is so
    special!!
Though I think Peter Lenkov sometimes did not give Alex props for being the heart-beat of HF-O, it’s a shame he screwed up his own relationship with CBS. There would now be a perfect opportunity to bring back the cast for a TV movie, including Steve and Catherine, hopefully with children now, to work on an important case. The possibilities for a story-line are endless.
I don’t know whether Lenkov has any kind of copy-right with the
HF-O ‘brand’, or if something could be arranged with the Freeman estate. It would be a great opportunity to catch up with
all the characters, particularly Steve and Catherine.

I don’t know about the copy-rights and other legal stuff, but a TV movie or miniseries with Steve and Catherine as main characters and with the rest of the cast (a pity Terry O’Quinn “died”) is an interesting idea. But this hardly could happen. Alex wouln’t be game as he has said many times that he does not want to repeat past characters. Besides it would be bad for his career, should he want to resume it. It would be like saying he is not able to do anything else, though we fans know better.
