I opened up the script and started reading it, and I couldn’t put it down. It’s fantastic, the writing is so powerful and the characters are so strong and full, and it’s such a beautiful story and such an important story, I think, for us, because of the way things are in the world at the moment. It’s about love; it’s about hope; and it’s about family. I just went back to [my agent’s] office and said, ‘I’ve got to do this; get me this job!’

I love love-scenes in movies. Making love is part of human nature. It shows the deepest connection between two characters – especially if it is all part of a real story line and not just there for sensation or for the sake of just being there.
Whenever Oyster Farmer is discussed, the subject of the love scene on the pier turns up as well. I want to share my thoughts on it, but would like to start at the beginning.
Oyster Farmer tells many different stories and one of them is the golden tread of the beautiful love story between Jack and Pearl that developes during the course of the film. From the very first time that they meet, you know they have some sort of attraction –
Jack: “Will I see you around?”
And every time they run into each other, their curiosity about the other seems to grow even more.
Then Mumbles decides it is time to play matchmaker and he sends Pearl to ask Jack for a lift home. Jack takes his chance and tries to kiss her – but clumsiness gets in the way and the moment is lost – He takes her home.
Lucky for him he did at least manage a goodnight kiss when he dropped her off.
When Brownie sees them eyeballing each other in the pub one day, he confronts Jack about the “relationship”. He warns Jack that she is a high maintenance girlfriend and he also plants a seed of doubt with him about the source of her income. Is she earning her money with “special” favours to the men in town? She needs to get the money to pay for her hobby of buying expensive imported shoes from somewhere…..
Everything Brownie breaks down, Mumbles tries to rebuild; “She likes you” he tells Jack as they meet up with her at the post boxes. He also spills the beans on who her real father is. This helps Jack to understand her connection with Slug.
Pearl sees Jack acting very lovey-dovey with another girl at the hospital – you can see the disappointment on her face…..
And when he visits her at the post office, she enquire about his other girl. He tells her more about his past as an orphan and that he is actually there for is sister, who is recovering in hospital after an accident.
The fact that Pearl was not selling herself for money, now fills Jack with new suspicion of where she gets the money from to pay for her expensive taste. He suspects her of stealing the money that he himself stole from the fish market.
He attempts to get his money back from her by blackmailing her, but fails miserably and he accidentally causes her dogs death in the process.
For once Brownie does something good for this love story. He tells Jack that Pearl uses her credit cards to buy shoes and that her mom had to cut them up to stop the spending. He also tells Jack to make up for what he has done by buying her a new dog as present, to help her get over the loss of the dog he accidentally killed.
With all obstacles removed, Pearl takes her dads advice and invites Jack to ‘a place where you can think’ along the river. And here enters our love scene, totally motivated by all that I have mentioned before.
At this point I want to mention all the criticism I have seen on this particular love scene from others and with it, also address some of them in my views about the scene:
• They did not use a condom
• There was no foreplay
• Jack did not show a lot of stamina – it lasted only a few seconds
• Oh how uncomfortable and those splinters and rusted nails
(The thread about it on IMDB has some good answers and it is all worth a read)
There is nothing intimate about a sex scene at all.
You have got 30 people standing around and there is a camera between your legs and there are lights and make-up girls looking at your bum to make sure you haven’t got too much shine.
If I never did another one, that would be just fine.
— Alex O’Loughlin, AAP General News, Australia, 16 June 2005
Who needs foreplay if you’ve had weeks of lusting after each other. Pearl knew why she invited him there and Jack is no fool. The small talk they have while lying there, also serves as foreplay. Add to that the thrill of being intimate in open air and some kisses and undressing in front of each other and by that time you would be begging him to just get on with it…..
Rarely would the use of a condom be depicted in a movie if there is no motivation for it. Only times when you will see it mentioned is, will be when there are some joke surrounding it or when something goes wrong with it.
It is actually rare to see love scenes in movies in real-time action. You normally see some sweaty bodies moving around seductively and an edited version of intertwining moments and flashes of the process. The love scene in Oyster Farmer is a rare jewel of something real. You see the process – the kissing, the undressing and then the intercourse. Beautifully and very realistically done.
With so much history behind it plus the factors of discomfort and the thrill of a public place, a quickie is required. If you have ever had a quickie under these types of circumstances, you will know that just the thrill of it, speeds things up. There is not much action needed to reach the heights of passion. It is like the power nap of sex! Shorter and more powerful, but it serves its purpose well…… For me while watching it, those seconds feels like an eternity!
Their “moves” are also not the Hollywood directed ones used for the thrill of the viewers. They are real and raw and very believable. They are in an uncomfortable place, new to each other and hungry for passion! It also looks like no sound editing was needed. The two of them got it all to perfection.
I have watch many people watching the movie for the first time and somewhere during this scene, they all get this nervous shuffle in their chair – which tells me that they are finding it a bit uncomfortably hot, I think.
And then there are those little giggles of satisfaction from both of them at the end….sounding like some form of relieve, that they have done it and it was great!
After this and back in real life, when talking to his “mentors”, Jack talks about love. That for me, makes it so much more special, because you know he was not just banging another chick. He was MAKING LOVE……..
If we didn’t laugh about it, we would have been crying.
Now I’ve started worrying because Oyster Farmer is going out on 22 screens internationally in July, and there’ll be my naked bum again.

This story is dedicated to McMo – Thanks for being such a fun person and for loving this as much as I do!
And to Anna Reeves (Writer/ Director of Oyster Farmer)
– You are my hero for bringing the young uninhibited Alex O’Loughlin to the movies!
I´m not sure I see the climax anymore, my vision is blurring 😉

this is the best sex scene of Alex, better than in Mary Bryant.
Does know everyone what Jack Pearl whispers to, after they are “ready and he kisses them?

What also would interest me is, what made him so drastically change his mind about love/sex scenes between the Interview from 2004 and the one 2006 that you quote.
And about the reality in those scenes, in his case for the shield’s scene and this one, just how much can a man take of mechanical friction before his body truly reacts? I always wondered…

These quotes of mine are all from 2005 when he did promotion work for Oyster Farmer, I think. So to me he has always felt like it is a tough gig to do.
What did he say in the 2004 interview?
In my research on these type of scenes I came accross a quote from the great Sean Connery. I can’t find it now but it more or less boils down to him saying a man as an actor, doing a love scene, always have to apologize. If his body does in fact react, he can look like a perv and if it does not react the actress might think she is not desirable enough……so it is tough on them either way.
Maybe the “There’s something about Mary” treatment is recommended. 😛

What’s that for a TSAM treatment?
But I love the Sean quote. Its spot on!
The Interview was one of the first for some Aussie brekkies TV. He actually got red ears, but if I remember correctly it was about being part of his job to deliver whatever reaction the director expected him to deliver…
Quite natural an open about it. Or was it for Feed, or the white collar blue? Just remember it was down under, and I had just recently recovered from my Hugh Jackman crush when this other spunk fit as a Mallee bull surfaced out of nowhere… and I was gobsmacked. Again!

In TSAM, the guy adviced his friend to “help” himself just before he goes on a first date, so that he can relax and not get to exited while on the date…. 🙂
I have to go look for those interviews again….

I like the movie. The love scene looked uncomfortable. Their facial expression are let do this rather than an act of passion. I didn’t see it as a hot love scene just two naked people having s/x. There was the dead dog scene which I thought had more concern about Pearl than the love scene.

Of course we as girls all prefer foreplay…and I hoped that people would understand that I do not think it is never nessesary. It was just not really needed at that time for them to make it great……..
And that kiss when he dropped her, is one of my favorite Alex kisses… 🙂

Agree that Alex is kissing in this movie quite “nicely” (a huge understatement!) but the camera angles didn´t favor them. Hence I still regard the Mary Bryant kiss as my personal Alex favorite 🙂

I think it shows the difference in how Aussies see, live and portray sex in comparison with “Hollywood”.
The Aussies are much more realistic, natural and honest about it than Americans. There’s no false shame or bigotry involved, when portaying that most natural of all urges. Its sex, we’ve all done it, and its a lot of fun! The american hollywoodian way is sterile and artificle, its like silikon breasts and veneers. Might look cool from a distance, but close up? No thanks!
I also agree that a quickie after so long of “boiling up the kettle” was the only believable way for them to release that steam.
And if you watch closely they seem to get on with it a second time, just before the camera cuts away…
And about that unconfi squirming? They’re aroused because the scene felt “fair dinkum” as everything Alex does!

I’m sort of a newcomer – both to blogging and to the gorgeous Alex O’Loughlin. Watched “Oyster Farmer” the day before yesterday – and YES, the love scene is incredibly hot! Still, in the other scenes of the movies I don’t feel the chemistry between the two than much. That’s why I have talked about the “sex scene” in my review… I don’t really feel the love. I think Alex shows more chemistry with Sophia Myles in “Moonlight”…
But I really love your analysis! 🙂

It’s been a long time and until now, I get a chance to watch this movie of Alex for the first time. I start liking him since Steve McGarrett of Five-0.
Just a quick question, the bed scene seems so realistic. I wonder whether they really make love in the filming process. Oh my god. I swear to God that I seek for a realistic bed scene like this one happening between Steve and Catherine on Five-0. I’m crazy about them.
Sorry for a little bit off the topic here 😀

I read up quite a bit about love- scenes in movies and from what I read on the topic, I can truely say that the chances of actors realing having sex during the filming process, is kind of slim – so my answer is no, definitely not really making love! 😀
And also if you read Alex’s and the directors accounts of the filming of that particular scene, it will rule out any further doubt you might have had about it just being good acting.
I agree, the way they portrayed a quicky and the sounds they created with it were spot on and very realistic. Just another example of what a great actor Alex is 😛

Thank you for replying and answering my silly question. Yeah Alex is hands down a talented actor. The first character of Alex that I’ve known is Steve McGarrett, then I watched Three Rivers and The back-up plan. He has an amazing skill of acting. There is no character that he played is similar from the others. He truly can portray every kind of a human being in a very outstanding manner.
Btw, I hope that I can see a bedscene like this scene in Five-0, between Steve and Cath. Oh god, how long will I have to wait until the day it really happens?

It is not such a silly question. There are lots of people that think it. 😛
Think the hotest we would every get between Cath & Steve already happened in that first scene of the 2 of them in bed. Don’t see that CBS will allow anything hotter 😦

I was actually surprised at how explicit that one bed scene between McGarrett and Rollins was – the one in 105, where we first met her. As they’re talking about having “dinner”, it’s really clear what they’re doing beneath those sheets. I get flustered whenever I watch it, lol. It’s quite…delicious the way they react to each other’s touch.

*Real* sex in films is frowned upon, extremely. (Such a thing would classify the film as pornography, no matter how good the movie might be otherwise.) There are all kinds of clever ways the filmmakers come up with for being as real as possible *without* ever having real contact. Arousal can happen, of course, and many actors joke about what they do in those situations. (One said you kinda have to apologize either way – “I’m sorry if I get aroused and I’m sorry if I don’t!”) The subject is still so off-book that people still speculate if Faye Dunaway and William Holden were doing it in the film “Network” – and that was fourty years ago! So no, it’s not feasible that they were really having sex on that pier – it’s just *very* good acting. 🙂

Great rundown! That scene on the pier has fascinated me, as well, in part because – as you say – it’s such an honestly filmed scene. I’ve done things like that, in my misspent youth, so a couple of thoughts:
Much as it might look like a public place, remember that there is basically no one around for a long way. They’d hear anyone coming (pun not intended) long before they got there. So it really is rather a private place even though it’s so open. No impediment to getting it on!
And it’s not *that* short a bout of lovemaking, because if you watch the “ending” closely, you’ll see he’s not finished, only she is. At her climax, she kind of shinnies up his body like she’s climbing a tree (LOVED that move, so delicate), then she relaxes and he laughs – but *he* doesn’t relax. Then when the shot switches from the master shot to the closer two-shot of their faces, you can see he’s still moving over her, and he’s not pulling away or climbing off. My take on it is that he keeps going, and she possibly gets another go, too! As one of my writing teachers told me, never assume the scene ends where the script ends. “Start late, leave early,” is one of the mottoes of good screenwriting, after all.
Last but not least…*sigh* Oh, I do love the shape of his body back then. Big and strong but huggable and welcoming. A guy *not* built from granite is my kinda guy. *sigh* 🙂
