#AlexOLoughlin at SOTB over the years – It’s a Poll!

We have done so many of the interviews and speeches from Sunset on the Beach lately to update our archives and I thought that it might be a fun idea to let you all choose which look of Alex at SOTB over the years, did you like best. With it I have some trivia just for some added fun. Hope you enjoy it and also the pictures that were chosen – most of them for a specific reason. (And remember to click on them to see them better)

SOTB Season 1

(13 September 2010)

• Clothes: Alex was dressed in a black suit with a white open neck shirt without a tie.
• Assisting  Alex on the red carpet:  Diana Jackson his PA at that time.
• Family and Friends: At the first SOTB Alex was accompanied by his girlfriend that he had at that time, actress Amber Clayton.
• Fellow Cast & their families: All the main cast members, Scott, Daniel and Grace were there, as well as Taryn Manning. (There is not a lot of footage available, and I am therefore not sure who else attended.)

SOTB Season 2

(10 September 2011)

• Clothes: A dark suit with a dark shirt and no tie. And a white pocket-handkerchief.
• Assisting  Alex on the red carpet:  Diana Jackson his PA at that time.
• Family & Friends: Alex did not bring any recognisable guests, but his friend and stand-in double Sam Gould sat with him.
• Fellow Cast & their families:  Scott attended with his girlfriend Kacy, Daniel was there with his wife Mia and the children, Grace was there with her husband Phil. Masi Oka and Lauren German also attended.
  

SOTB Season 3

(23 September 2012)

• Clothes: This year Alex chose a light grey suit with a white shirt and a brown pocket-handkerchief with white dots.
• Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Kristen Rowsey was Alex’s PA at the time.
• Family & Friends: He attended with Malia who was far along in her pregnancy with Lion and her son Spike, and a number of her family (including Malia’s father and stepmother, and also her brother Daniel and his wife Natalie). And of course at the time Saxon also stayed in Hawaii and attended the event with them as well.
• Fellow Cast & their families: At the time, Scott was not there, because his mother passed away during that week (but Kacy attended). Grace was also not there. But Daniel and his wife Mia as well as Masi Oka  and Michelle Borth attended.

SOTB 3

SOTB Season 4

(26 September 2013)

• Clothes: Dark Grey suit with a white shirt and a tie (it is rather easy to spot the pictures from this SOTB, as it was the only time that Alex wore a tie. I loved it!)
• Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Kristen Rowsey was still Alex’s PA at the time
• Family & Friends: Alex attended with Malia and Spike and Malia’s father.
• Fellow Cast & their families: As usual Daniel and his wife Mia attended, but neither Scott nor Grace was at the event – Grace was pregnant at the time. This was of course the first year that Chi McBride attended as part of the team. Michelle Borth was also there.

SOTB Season 5

(13 September 2014)

• Clothes: This year Alex chose a dark suit with a dark open neck shirt.
• Family & Friends: Malia and Spike.
• Fellow Cast & their families: This year the main cast were back again in full force with Scott  and Grace back at the event. Grace brought her husband again this time. As usual Mia was there with Daniel. And of course Chi and Jorge.

SOTB Season 6

(12 September 2015)

• Clothes: Dark suit with a shade of blue and a dark open neck shirt.
• Family & Friends: Malia and her brother Daniel attended with Alex
• Fellow Cast & their families: As usual Daniel was there with wife Mia, but this time Grace was there without her husband. And then of course Chi and Jorge. Interesting to see that a second year in a row, Peter Lenkov’s wife Audie, also attended (sitting next to Malia in the front row)

SOTB Season 7

(23 September 2016)

• Clothes: Once again Alex chose a dark suit, but this time with V-neck black sweater.
• Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Ryan
• Family and Friends: Malia attended with Alex.
• Fellow Cast & their families: Not many pictures of the cast available, but we know that Scott was there with Kacy. And as usual Daniel and his wife Mia attended with Chi and Jorge as well.

 

SOTB Season 8

(10 November 2017)

• Clothes: This time Alex wore a dark suit again, but with a round neck black sweater.
• Assisting  Alex on the red carpet: Ryan
• Family & Friends: As with most of the other stars, Alex did not bring any guests this year.
• Fellow Cast & their families: Most of the stars (Scott, Chi, Meaghan, Anthony and Jorge) attended alone, apart from Beulah who brought his wife.

Passion in Paradise – #H50 Relationship Roundup (Up to Season 7)

From the promotional clips of Episode 7:16 (which will be broadcasted on 10 February), we can see that it is about a so-called ‘staycation’ and double dating for the men and their girlfriends. (In other words, this years’ Valentines episode) I thought it could be a good time to look back at the women on Hawaii Five-0 and how they were described by the Network a while back.

It is always interesting to see that when fans do not like a certain relationship, they say the show is not a soap opera, but whenever questions are given by fans for the reporters to ask the producer, most of the time they are asking about the relationships?

We added some thoughts after each or the Network’s descriptions of the relationships and then we added some pictures of them – together with Steve of course (because here it is always all about Steve/Alex 😀 ).

Kono and Adam:

Kono and Adam might just be Hawaii Five-0‘s top sweethearts. They’d already been through thick-and-thin before their wedding vows. Even their special day and honeymoon were interrupted (by a nuclear threat and kidnapping, respectively). Fortunately, they’ve always had each other to rely on.

• Not mentioned here is the fact that Adam had to go to prison for murder as well, and has been released since then already.

McGarrett and Catherine:

Catherine Rollins has been an on-and-off love interest of Steve McGarrett’s since the series began, but disappeared from his life when she chose to stay in Afghanistan to help on a humanitarian mission. She returned on the eve of Kono and Adam’s wedding, much to McGarrett’s delight, but decided to leave again just before he could propose.

• Of course their relationship started long years before the series began.
• Latest update of course is that Cath came back to get Steve’s help to rescue his mother and they both came clean about stuff between them after Lynn spilled the beans about the proposal that never happened.

Lou and Renee Grover:

Lou and Renee joined Hawaii Five-0 in Season 4. The couple lives in tropical bliss with their two children.

• Most of the time we also just see Renee when she is needed for a story and for the most part family stories for Grover were often about his children (We even met his daughter Samantha before his wife).
• And lately even his daughter had to make way for his son Will, who is now dating Danny’s daughter Grace.

Chin and Malia:

Chin Ho Kelly and Dr. Malia Waincroft were engaged before the pilot episode ever aired. They were married in a ceremony featuring Five-0 team members acting as bridesmaids and groomsmen, but it ended in tragedy when she passed away after the second season.

• That is putting it mildly, “passed away” – she was murdered by Frank Delano.
• And of course then her brother Gabriel came in and played a far bigger role than she ever did.
  

Chin and Leilani:

Chin and Leilani met during the Halawa prison riot. While it may not have been the most romantic way to meet, the two grew close and Chin realized he was ready to find love again.

• After one or two appearances she however disappeared without a trace or any explanation of her whereabouts. Of course we know that in real life the actress had another baby and her busy schedule most probably ‘killed’ this character. But they could have just said something, rather than just having her disappear into the abyss with other females on the show.
  

Rachel and Danny:

Danny and Rachel’s relationship began while he was a cop in New Jersey. The two divorced there, but Danny may not have ended up with Five-0 if not for her decision to move to Hawaii. She brought their daughter, Grace, to the islands—and he followed. It seemed Rachel might be moving on and she even tried to move to Las Vegas, but after having a son she eventually reveals to Danny that he’s also the boy’s father.

• In my opinion Rachel is one of the most underutilized characters of the show. They could have done so much more with her, rather than just being an incubator for Danny’s offspring.
• And lately we are seeing more and more of their son Charlie now. Wonder how long it will take for no Gracie anymore (since the actress moved to the mainland now to pursue her career in Hollywood and with growing up she lost her cuteness factor)
  

Danny and Gabby:

Danny and Dr. Gabrielle Asano certainly seemed to be getting serious when he decided to introduce her to his daughter, Grace, in Season 2. The on-again-off-again relationship ended when she accepted a job offer in Denver.

• This relationship was very much decided by the actresses’ personal life and her getting pregnant, I think. Also lots of potential for character story lost here, but at least they told us what happened to her (not something often done with these filler characters on Hawaii Five-0)
  

Danny and Amber/ Melissa:

Always popular with the ladies, Danny befriended a fellow east coaster, named Amber, when she moved to the island in Season 4. Later, he would save her from a violent ex-boyfriend. That’s when she revealed she’d been hiding from the ex under a fake identity. Her real name was Melissa. With everything out in the open, the two got a fresh start.

• It was actually not her ex-boyfriend, but her husband.
• What a strange relationship, with everything happening off screen and whenever she is there she looks very involved in Danny’s life, but when she is not used, she seems to not exist at all ….

Sabrina and Max:

Bank teller Sabrina Lane caught the eye of Dr. Max Bergman and he visited her weekly. Unfortunately, the bank was robbed on the day he finally worked up the courage to ask her out. Sabrina was injured, and Max sweetly stayed by her bedside in the hospital until her parents could arrive.

• Unfortunately most of their relationship happened off screen – even their wedding. And now they both left.
  

Of course there are some relationships not mentioned in the CBS article:

Chin and Abby:

• Abby joined Five-0 undercover for the FBI. It was love at first sight for her and Chin. After her cover as spy was blown, she was offered a job at HPD.
• And then apart from one appearance and one other mention this season, she is missing in action. I am not sure exactly how her present projects is affecting her role. Will she ever be back or not?
  

Steve and Lynn:

• Steve and Lynn was introduced to each other by Ellie, and the two have been dating for a year now – mostly off screen. How serious are they? I guess time will tell ……..
  

In a very well written review by Mr Mike for Episode 7:14, the subject of respect for the intelligence of viewers, as well as respect for women as a group came up. He then also got a lengthy and honest comment about it from someone, which he posted with his review: Link

How do you feel, are women (and relationships) really important for the writers of the show, or are they just used as plot devices? Do you think it is wrong or do you think is it normal for an action show like Hawaii Five-0 to do that?

Steve, dressed to impress

Comparisons with the original Hawaii Five-o and the Hawaii Five-0 we all love, have never been important to me. The present era of Television is so far removed from what we had in the 70’s. Not only did technology explode since then, but acting skills and fashion changed quite a bit 😀 . I kind of feel sorry for Jack Lord and his team, who had to wear suits all the time – in Hawaii! I wonder how many different suits and ties Jack were dressed in during the 12 years and 281 episodes that were made?

Lucky for Alex, present day Steve only have to wear a suit on special occasions. But boy, he does clean up nicely once we get to see him in a suit. Over the 4 seasons there seems to be an increase in the number of occasions created by the writers for him to wear a suit. Let us investigate……..

Season 1

It looks like in Season 1, ‘The Suit’ was used for “undercover” work. In episode 103 to infiltrate an illegal casino and in episode 108 to attend the art exhibition of a drug dealer.

Season 2

In episode 202 ‘The Suit’ was used to impress the new School Principal Governor and in the end it worked more on the office spy Home Affairs girl. In episode 212 ‘The Suit’ was used for the happy occasion of Chin’s wedding – getting lei’d with it as well 😛 . In episode 216, we got treated with ‘The Tux’ to support the boss and his charity

Season 3

In episode 309, ‘The Suit’ is used for the occasion of being glorified security guards for super models 😀 . In episode 311 ‘The Tux’ was dusted off again to impress the girlfriend – unfortunately Alex Steve gained a few pounds since the Governor’s charity event 😳 . In episode 318 ‘The Suit’ made it to a funeral.

Season 4

In episode 403 ‘The Suit’ was used to support the girlfriend with her change of career paths. In episode 409 the thanks giving men of Hawaii dressed in  ‘The Suits’ to welcome the President. Just the best ‘Suit’ was used to impress intimidate the Internal Affairs men in episode 413. And in episode 414 ‘The Suit’ for the first time made it to our screens for no real prominent reason. Are we seeing a new era of Steve wearing more suits, just for the sake of wearing a suit?

As far as we have seen in the past, the fangirls love ‘The Suit’ and would like to see Steve on display in it more often. (Most of us, we think, have fantasies of ripping it off though 😛 ) . But what do you  prefer? ‘The Suit’ with of without a tie? Should the jacket come off more often (preferably with some shots from behind with it ) ? Or should we have Steve follow in the Steve of Jack Lord’s era and have him wear ‘The Suit’ all the time? Or like Danno, let him wear the dress pants with a shirt to work?
