#AlexOLoughlin Best Hair – It’s a Poll x2

We have not done a poll for a long time and I got this titbit from a post on Moonlight Fan Blog.  I thought we could use it as a starting point for a poll. Unfortunately I could not locate the original EW post about it anymore, but here is what I found on the blog.

On the PopWatch Blog, Michael Slezak asked Entertainment Weekly’s readers to nominate the best and worst TV hair. Of course…. Mick was not only nominated, he was selected as a winner.

It seems as if Alex was not only seen as one of the sexiest stars on TV in those Moonlight days, but that his hair was well liked as well. This made me think that we should ask how the fans feel about his hair in the various roles over the past 15 years. (not all the roles are included)

Here is our first poll. Take a look at Alex’s  hair over the years before Hawaii Five-0. The hair from which role do you like best? (Remember, it is about the HAIR 😉 😉 )

(1) ‘White Collar’ Blue hair (Alex in 2003 as Ian Mack in an episode of this TV series)

(2) ‘Oyster Farmer’ Hair (Alex as Jack Flange in this movie filmed in 2003)

(3) ‘Black Jack Sweet Science’ Hair (Alex as Luke Anderson in this 2004 TV Drama)

(4) ‘Mary Bryant’ Hair (Alex plays Will Bryant in this TV Drama that was filmed during the last 3 months of 2004)

(5) ‘Feed’ Hair (Alex as Michael Carter in this movie filmed in the beginning of 2005)

(6) ‘The Invisible’ Hair (Alex as Marcus Bohem in this movie, filmed at the end of 2005)

(7) ‘August Rush’ Hair (Alex as Marshall Connelly in this movie, filmed in 2006)

(8) ‘The Shield’ Hair (Alex as Kevin Hiatt in this TV series filmed in 2006)

(9) ‘Whiteout’ Hair (Alex as Russell Haden in this movie filmed in 2007)

(10) ‘Moonlight’ Hair (Alex as Mick St John in the TV series filmed from August 2007 – April 2008)

(11) ‘Criminal Minds’ Hair (Alex as Vincent Rowlings  in an episode of this TV Series)

(12) ‘The Back-Up Plan’ Hair (Alex as Stan in this movie, filmed in 2009)

(7) ‘Three Rivers’ Hair (Alex as Andy Yablonski in this TV series, filmed in 2009)

You can vote for the 3 hairstyles that you like best

  • And here is our second poll. Take a look at Steve McGarrett’s hair over the years. The hair from which season do you like best? (and again just a reminder that it is about the hair 🙂 )

Alex O’Loughlin: Who is he? – February 2008

Sunday Life,

17 February 2008

ml 5 sunnies

Who is/was Alex O’Loughlin, at that time?

1. Age:

2. Why he looks familiar:

Another NIDA graduate, class of 2000, O’Loughlin starred in 2004’s Oyster Farmer but got his break in the US as the star of Moonlight, a TV series about vampires, which aired on Channel Nine. “I’ve got a six-year contract [with Moonlight], so I just try to keep my head down. I don’t wash dishes anymore; that’s the main thing”

ml 5-5

3. Why you should care:

After the Moonlight pilot aired, producer Joel Silver realised the show wasn’t up to scratch and replaced the entire cast – except O’Loughlin. “A lot of times you do a pilot … and you know if the pieces aren’t working. And I think the knew right away they had a star in Alex and they just rebuilt around him”, says co-star Brian White.

4. Birthplace:

Born in Canberra but grew up in Sydney “My parents divorced when I was two. From the age of 10, I went back a forth between the two cities.”

5. Marital status:

He’s been dating Aussie singer and former ‘Neighbours’ star Holly Valance for the past 18 months and says, “It’s going strong.”

6. Family ties:

“Mum’s a musician. She plays piano and has a beautiful voice, so she understands the creative need.” But that doesn’t mean she misses he son any less now he’s living in LA. “Mum lights up when she sees me. Her cheeks go pink – she’s all over me, pulling me hair, pinching my cheeks.” O’Loughlin also has a sister, 31, whom he describes as a “multi-talented volleyball player, gypsy chef”.

7. Bitten Young:

“I was in a school play when I was 10 and had fish fingers stuck up my nose and I was wearing these spectacles and making the audience laugh. I remember the rush and I loved it.”

8. Surreal moment:

O’Loughlin was taking a break from filming Moonlight on the Warner Brothers’ lot one day when a cart full of sightseeing women laid eyes on him. “They started screaming at the top of their lungs – it scared the shit out of me”

ml 5-2

9. The move to the US was tough:

“There was a whole year, in 2005, when I wasn’t getting anywhere. I had to sell my stereo and a few other things. I got my motorbike stolen, it was miserable. I was sleeping in a mate’s office floor, questioning my talent – that was really difficult.”

ml 5-1

10. Home is where the work is:

“I love the Australian industry but it’s a boutique industry – the US is where it is.” And while O’Loughlin admits that’s changing, he can’t wait around. “If I want to buy a house, I’d have to stay in Australia making movies for a hundred years.”

11. Career highlights:

Auditioning for Casino Royale. “The screen test for James Bond was a real ‘pinch yourself’ moment I’ll never forget.”

12. Inspiration:

“Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing. Ryan Gosling is also an incredible actor; he’s also a friend of mine …. well an acquaintance.”

13. Next:

August Rush, with Robin Williams, is out on Thursday.

My Thoughts

  • This is yet another example of the media not always getting it right and that what we read are not all accurate …..
  • From no 3: The writer says that after the pilot episode of Moonlight aired, they changed the cast – that original pilot of course never aired and I doubt if it was Joel who made the decision and choice to recast – think it had more to do with the network
  • From no. 4: A contradiction between what the writer states and what Alex say in his comment: The writer says that Alex grew up in Sydney – but Alex himself says that he only started to move between the cities when he was 10. So more accurate would be, that he grew up in Canberra with mom and only started to visit his dad in Sydney when he turned 10.
  • From no. 2: For people who say that when an actor signs a contract for a specific time, that the series will last for that long – Alex had a 6 year contract for Moonlight – the series lasted 16 episodes.
  • From no. 10: Well, Alex was in the USA for 5 years, when he bought his house in Hawaii. (substantially less than that 100 years it would have taken him in Oz – sounds like he made the right choice then. 🙂 )
  • Just some trivia about Brian White who played the detective on Moonlight – he had a guest appearance in Hawaii Five-0 in Epi 5:02 as the kidnapper.

PS. The pictures are from Moonlight Episode 5 and the original pilot, that never aired.

We are still in big awe of Gabi´s (aka Fever´s) generousity for allowing us to share her unsigned copy of the original Moonlight pilot. We have uploaded it to our FB, so you can view it here

#AlexOLoughlin: News Weekly Interview – March 2008

The hot Aussie star is lighting up the big and small screens

Alex O’Loughlin On:

Making the big time,

Those Bon Scott Rumours

Dating Holly Valance

Article: News Weekly,

3 March 2008

Mick St John

After years of hard slog, Aussie actor Alex O’Loughlin is finally making headway in Hollywood. Sydneysider Alex stars in the TV drama Moonlight, in which he plays a reluctant vampire and detective Mich St John.

He also has a part in new film August Rush opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keri Russel. The 32 year old chats to NW about his rise to the top, girlfriend Holly Valance and his turn in a tampon commercial…

News Week:  So you made it!

Alex: [Laughs] It’s taken me a while, I’ve been living over here for three years full-time, and I’ve been going over there for six, seven years.

It takes a while to climb the greasy pole of Hollywood, as they say. You get up a bit and then you slip back down, that’s what it’s like. You take two steps forward, three steps back.

But you just chip away until you get there.

News Week: People talk about the Aussie Factor in Hollywood – Do you think they really still care?

Alex: Yeah, I absolutely think they do. I think Aussies are looked upon as a mystery. There’s a universal feeling in America that Aussies have something to offer that’s different. I don’t know if it’s true or not!

We’re very fortunate to be brought up the way we’re brought up. Although certain aspects of it can be frustrating – the tall poppy syndrome is alive and well – it actually breeds a certain level of humanity.

I think we have a really good work ethic – we don’t sit around and moan we don’t have the right flavoured candles in our trailers. The things you hear, it’s like, are you kidding? You’re overpaid as it is, just show up and get on with it.

News Week: What was working with Jonathan Rhys Meyers like?

Alex: Johnny and I play brothers [in August Rush], and we lived together for the duration of filming in New York. Johnny and his real brother Jaime – he’s in the movie as well as the drummer of the band we’re all in – and I all lived together and we had a blast.

It was great being surrounded by Irish accents, too. We just tore the p**s out of each other the whole time, we had a great repartee and they have a great sense of humour. Jonathan is really well-read, a really smart guy.

News Week: How have you found the response to Moonlight?

Alex: A couple of people have approached me on the streets [in Melbourne] and they said they really liked it, and I’m really glad. I’m sure it’s going to find its audience, it certainly has in America.

News Week: Playing a Vampire, a lot of the show is filmed at night – How do you deal with that?

Alex: In television this is about as hard as it gets. It’s a one-hour drama – I’m number one on the call sheet.

The show is about a bunch of different characters and different things, but essentially it’s about Mick St John, who is my character. It’s make-up heavy, it’s special-effects heavy, I do most of my own stunts and we shoot at night so … We get a half-hour lunch break each day.

People think it’s a glamorous industry, [but] it’s not. It’s a lot of hard work. But network television at this level, I’ve never experienced anything like it in my career. It’s just like ‘Oh my God’. It’s quite astonishing how much of your life it takes. So you’ve really got to fight to keep some resemblance of normality outside the show.

News Week: How do you do that?

Alex: You really just have to roll with it. You’ve got to go home and take your shoes off and have dinner and try to relax – or have breakfast depending on what time you’re getting home! Just try to make every hour count with your people and for yourself.

News Week: There was a rumour that you were the secret love child of Bon Scott, the late lead singer of AC/DC.

Alex: Where did that rumour come from? That just knocked me.

Alex’s Photo album:

News Week: There’s also another guy claiming that he is Bon’s son…

Alex: It’s the same photo that they used to compare me. And this other dude – he looks nothing like me!

I was looking at it going [to actress/singer girlfriend Holly Valance], “Hol, I could be Bon Scott’s son”, and she said, “No you couldn’t, you don’t look anything like him.” This other bloke, maybe he is, good luck to him! [Laughs]

News Week: It must be bizarre for a rumour like that just to come from nowhere.

Alex: It is bizarre, man. But it wasn’t malicious, it was almost cool. Kind of mysterious. My Dad was cool as a cucumber, Mum was a little hurt. She was a little offended but she got over it. It’s just ridiculous.

News Week: How did you and Holly meet?

Alex: We met through a friend in Hollywood … And we got on very well and we’ve been together ever since. I don’t like talking about it too much – but I want to say that we’re happy.

News Week: What was it like being asked to audition for James Bond?

Alex: It was a couple of years ago now … They flew me over and looked after me very nicely for a week and cut a couple of suits for me and cut my hair and did a couple of scenes.

To be honest, I knew I wasn’t going to get Bond, I’m too young … You never know, in a few years maybe …

News Week: Do people in the street ever say “Mousey, Mousey?” to you, in reference to the tampon ad you starred in?

Alex: So funny, man! Not recently, but that was a big favourite of a lot of people for a long time. One of the first times I was approached on the street in Australia – I’d done a few movies here and some theatre – somebody came up to me and went, “Do I know you?”

I was like, “I don’t know”, and he’s like, “What do you do? And I said, “I’m an actor.” I’m waiting for, “Oh, I saw you in this movie”, and they go, “I got it! Tampon boy!” And I go, “Yep, that’s me, I’m tampon boy.” I’m quite endeared to that little commercial.

Alex O’ – Holly’s hottie steps up with two racy new roles – February 2008

Until a year ago, actor Alex O’Loughlin was, by his own admission, such a nobody in Los Angeles that he “couldn’t get arrested.” Living on baked beans and building work since arriving in 2005, his luck changed a year later when he met a certain starlet.

O'Loughlin's ability to empathise with other people and roles is "quite astounding," says Tony Knight, NIDA's head of acting

O’Loughlin’s ability to empathise with other people and roles is “quite astounding,” says Tony Knight, NIDA’s head of acting

“I was helping a friend with a pergola and Holly [Valance] came over – they were mates,” says ex-Sydneysider O’Loughlin, who is best known here for the 2004 film Oyster Farmer and 2005 miniseries The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant. “I was like, `She’s so hot, ` but she played it really cool. As it turned out, she was more of a fan than she let on.”

The pair shacked up in Hollywood, where O’Loughlin was known for losing the James Bond role to Daniel Craig – “How gutted was I? I didn’t think I was going to get it. It was a f–ing fantastic experience. I’ve held the gun!” – and (erroneous) reports that he is the son of AC/DC rocker Bon Scott. “My dad didn’t care [about the rumours] but my mum was upset,” says the 31-year-old, whose father is a physics teacher and mother a nurse. “Being viewed as a charlatan worried her.”

Then he landed a part in TV crime series The Shield and a supporting role in August Rush, a magical drama (opening on Feb. 21) starring Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Robin Williams, about an orphan who is sure his parents are alive. O’Loughlin, whose son Saxon, 10, is in Australia, and Rhys Meyers shared an apartment in New York while making the movie. “We’d work out and see bands,” says O’Loughlin.

Nabbing the lead in vampire TV series Moonlight means O’Loughlin has less time with Holly: “We’d prefer to be together more. You want to be with someone you love, but you adapt.”

My Thoughts:

  • Good example of how things change in all our lives. Both Holly and Alex got married (of course to other people), since that time and both became parents with their respective partners since then. Alex & Malia with Lion in October 2012 and Holly & Nick Candy with daughter Luka in November 2013.
  • But some things also stay the same.

The road to Steve McGarrett, gif-recap of Alex´s screen appearances

We have done posts of Alex´s roles in the past, but it´s been a while. We thought it might be a good idea to celebrate his career again, as part of our birthday celebration for him.

First we have young NIDA graduate Alex, practicing his craft in Australian television and film……..

Then we have Alex in his first roles in Hollywood movies and US television……….

And then we get Steve, the super schmexy SEAL 🙂

Not only is he a pleasure to look at, but his performances over the years have always been a treat.
