“Well, at first it’s a little overwhelming, because she’s Carol Burnett. And it’s like, “Oh my goodness. How ….?” And ….. very quickly…. specially with someone like Carol, she’s so grounded and humble and amazing. And very, very quickly you are put at ease as an actor and as a person.”  – Alex O’Loughlin, Set Interview, Dec 2015

“I think to myself, “What am I going to do when this is over?” I don´t want to leave Hawaii, so … I mean, the longer the show goes, the less I have to worry about those sort of,  practical, like a day in the life, sort of things. But …. I’m very grateful, very glad.” – Alex O’Loughlin, Blessing Ceremony, July 2015

“I saw a t-shirt once that said, “Don’t mistake my aloha for weakness”. And that kind of sums up Hawaii for me, you know. Because the aloha is so deep, and it means something so very real. But you have to be a part of it to understand it. You have to …. And by the way, if you don’t have it in you, you’re never going to understand.” Alex O’Loughlin, Sunset on the Beach #6, 12 September 2015

“Hollywood is not exactly a hot bed of mental health, and I include myself in that. There’s not exactly super secure people everywhere. So having relationships, and when you have to travel so much, it’s tricky.” – Alex O’Loughlin, TV Week, March 2016

  1. It´s good that Alex feels so welcome in Hawaii. He has found his home and his family and is an ambassador for real Aloha himself. That t-shirt print is interresting and true because nowadays if you are not “knocking other people out” and proove how hard you can be you are often looked down to, considered weak or soft and not respected. Seems that being kind, considerate and caring is not in demand anymore. And I think, that´s esp. true with men. It´s sad. At least people in Hawaii and some people who don´t live there still know about real Aloha. Alex is one of them. It makes the world and human relatinships and our all lives better and easier. — And living that way may reduce mental issues in ourselves and the people around us. I read about the increasing awareness mental issues in Hollywood and other places just a few days ago. We all are more or less mentally challenged even though most people don´t have an official diagnose and we should be allowed to tell how we really feel without being judged because it is like it is and doesn´t make us “bad” people. So it´s good that celebrities who are people who are often considered flawless because they are forced to carry an image (often by us fans who want “our” superhuman) slowly start to show what they deal with.
And actually related to this: Alex´s quote about Hollywood made me thinking: “What is it? Do people with mental issues or higher sensitivity choose a profession like actor more often or does Hollywood kind of destroy people with it´s demands that doesn´t care for the individual human being? Maybe both.
Anyway: I wish all the best in the world for his life. If he wants to go on with his acting career I wish for him to find a way to avoid the bad sites of Hollywood. At least he lives in a stable enviroment and marriage now with people and friends around him who are not related to show biz.

    • Just an add: Rereading what I just wrote, the memory of the Austtalian “Are you O.K.?” campaign to help prevent suicides just crossed my mind that Alex supported back then. Good, important job.

You are so right, antjekreutz. Kindliness, compassion, altruism, they all seem old biblical virtues that don’t belong in our present world. In Spain, we often say “He (she) is such a good person that he (she) is dumb.” Even if it doesn’t imply that the person is dumb or weak for real, and we usually say it when we like the person and are sorry because we think he (she) is being taken advantage of, now that I’ve actually written it, I realize how deplorable it is.

“Aloha” is such a wonderful word. There is no way to describe what it fully means: love, understanding, compassion, generosity, I could go on and on. If Alex has that aloha spirit in him and lives with it, as it seems he does, then he is a much, much better man than the public Alex we know.

And about Hollywood. It’s a money-making factory, a jungle where the weak are crashed, and those who don’t abide by the showbusiness rules are annihilated. Their concept of “human being” is closely related with the amount of dollars they get from you. You make me win one million? I’ll praise you ten times. Two million? Twenty times. 500,000 dollars only? Turn around so I can kick your ass comfortably. I may not be fair, but that’s how I perceive it. No aloha lost there!

      • For a story – years ago – I wanted to know if Aloha has a real meaning. And I found this:

        Akahai, Lokahi, Oluolu, Haahaa, Ahonui.
        Altruism, Unanimity, Kindliness, Humility, Patience.
I don’t know if Aloha is an acronym or if the words just fit, but I like it.
        It describes Alex perfectly.

Aloha is definitely not an acronym. These words you mention are part of the Aloha spirit, but there are so many others! And all of them describe Alex. Note that the notion of forgiveness is present too, so living with the Aloha spirit does not mean you are perfect. You can forgive and been forgiven. After all, we all are human beings, not Gods, even Alex.
