#BJJ Journey to Black Belt for #AlexOLoughlin (Speech Transcript)

Last month Alex received his Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Renzo Gracie in Las Vegas at the ADCC World Championship event.

Video:

This is the transcript of his speech after he received the belt from Renzo.

Alex: I don’t know what to say. All of my training partners. Everyone who’s been a part of my journey

Cobrinha, I love you.

Alex: – Roger, I love you.

Alex: All of you guys, man. Halfway, thank you.

And this [Renzo Gracie] …. animal .

Alex: He’s  not here tonight, but I have to say, with all of my heart and all of my love, thank you to Egan Inoue for the first … first 10 years of my journey. [applause]

Renzo: And by the way, the motherfucker [Egan] beat me in Abu Dhabi …. Can you believe it?

Alex: I can’t even look at these, it kills me.

And this man [Rodrigo Gracie]… and this man has taken me over the line and into the future.

Alex: I don’t know what to say …. Look

…. It’s one of the only things that I understand to be a purely solitary venture that requires everyone. All of us do this journey alone, in here [own hearts] but we support each other here [the mat].

I don’t know what else to say…..

[Joking] The belt’s too big. [Laughs all around]

Renzo: Got to gain a little weight. You’ve got the be like this [Showing his own stomach]

Alex: Thank you, thank you, thank you – it’s an honour.

Renzo: One time this guy told me something – his whole life he was an actor, that’s his case. You know, he told me, “In reality, I thought I was an actor who did jiu-jitsu, but in reality, I’m a jiu-jitsu man who did acting”. So that’s him.

In his speech, Alex thank a number of people, and a number of them featured regularly at seminars and fights he attended on his journey over the past 11 years.

Let us recap some of those moments ….

  • After Alex started his training with Egan Inoue in 2011, he took a record-breaking time at Egan’s gym to move through his white belt stripes …..
  • Egan writes: (24 May 2012) Tegan has Alex O’lochlan’s 4th degree strips in his belt. Recond time 4 stripes for Grappling Unlimited. This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is from-egan-may-2012-tegan-with-alexs-white-belt-4-stripes.jpg
  • Alex received his Blue Belt in July 2012 from Egan at Grappling Unlimited.

In 21 Dec 2019 Egan wrote: Thank you @renzograciebjj for alway teaching me something new! I will never forget when Renzo and I trained in Brazil at Barra Gracie Rio when I was a blue belt. He didn’t make me tap once but you took me from one submission let me escape to the next submission let me escape to the next submission and he kept doing that to me over and over again. That was the best gift that any jujitsu instructor has ever given me. I learned so much and I’ve always train that way. You taught me something then and still till this day. Thank you Renzo for being my BJJ mentor.

  • On 17 September 2022 Alex received his Black Belt from Renzo Gracie.

  5. What an amazing journey. I´m so happy for him and wish for him a long and fulfilling future whatever comes his way. There are not many people around who live their life with such an amount of passion, integrity and courage and who is a good person, too. I REALLY like that man even though I don´t know him in person.
Wishing you all the best, Alex! I hope to see you again on screen and/or as director. But only time will tell. Be blessed!

“…this man has taken me over the line and into the future.” Why do these words make me uneasy?

I feel the same way. I’m thinking Alex may start a martial-arts business, and we may never see him on the screen again. If we don’t, I will be devastated!

      • Actually I can see Alex running his own marital arts business. I think he will be really good at it😊👍. Now before you send me hate messages, girls… I would like for Alex to return to acting too. However more than anything… I want him to be happy. Any decent fan would.

        • True! Any decent fan would want him to be happy regardless of what he is going to do in the future! 🙂

Sure, but happiness and unhappiness usually live togeter side by side in any human being’s soul. As a decent and loyal fan, I’m happy for him whatever road he chooses to follow. As a loyal and loyal fan, I’ll be unhappy if he chooses a road other than acting/writing/directing. Thinking that five months ago, when he was well into getting his black belt (which he must have known he would get), he signed with a new agent, is the only shred of hope I cling to, day after day.

I am happy that Alex has achieved one of his goals in life as it gives him pleasure beyond belief. The thought that he may venture into what he holds dear and not return back to what we have seen him do so expertly is a painful thought. It’s his life of course to do as he pleases but it would be really nice if he would continue to please us in that special way that only he knows how to do.🤙

Congratulations on your excellent work. I think Alex might be happy doing both, jiu jitsu and acting/writing, but I hope he returns to the art world one day. Right now I just can’t understand why there are so many bad opinions about his gray hair. It’s natural, he’s a human being, he ages like any of us. I was also much younger 10 years ago. Alex accepts himself as he is, and that’s great. I personally like it. He always looked like a man, a real man… with charm to give and sell. And this new look intensifies all your masculinity. In the midst of all this, that smile that disarms any woman 🙊. I have said. I apologize for the long comment.

    • Hm, I didn´t read many bad comments on his grey hair. It seems just to be the contrary. There have been many, many positive comments on his new look.
And about Alex not comming back to acting: I don´t know his plans of course but did you people ever consider that he can not come back to acting? If he can´t find or write a script he wants to do or if he does find one, doesn´t find somebody who is willing to produce and also will not be offered a new role, he won´t be able to come back. He would not be the first actor who has to face that situation.
Of course I hope, that won´t happen and he will come back. I really miss him on screen, too.
And planning to run a martial arts school himself? Maybe. But you can also understand his words in a completelly different way. Since this is only speculation I won´t go on with this. But whatever he is doing in the future I think, we will hear about it. And then we will know. So we´ll better relax and wait for news and/or an opportunity to support him if required.

Thank you for sharing this summary and transcript! Amazing to see how devoted Alex is in doing BJJ, and getting to know about his progression 😃 I’ve might said this before, but I (a fellow studious go getter) admire him for – the fact – he continues to keep learning and developing. Way to go, Alex 💪
