What does it all mean? #AlexOLoughlin Signs With Atlas Artists and Former Agent John Burnham

Wonderfully interesting news we got yesterday about Alex signing with John Burnham and Atlas Artists and Atlas Literary.
The most significant fact of it all is, that it shows Alex is still in the storytelling business.

Just to confirm –  the details of this new development were already updated on IMDB on 19 April – so it is kind of old news already. On there, John and Atlas Artists is listed as Manager and Talent agent for Alex, but it seems that UTA will also still act as Talent Agent for him until otherwise stated.

Let us dissect yesterday’s article and maybe get some more from it than just what one might think – and maybe better clarify things for the future.
Remember it is just looking at what we have seen and adding up to what it might mean – it might be right or wrong. We are just debating some facts.
Therefore this is not a rumour or facts we are stating – but just a mention of different things we know – and combining the information.
Article info combined with definitions with links in blue:
  • Former top ICM talent and literary agent John Burnham,

What Is a Literary Agent?

A literary agent is a person who represents the business interests of writers and their written works. Agents work with new writers and bestselling authors alike, acting as business-minded intermediaries between creatives and book publishing houses, film producers, and theatrical or film producers. Agents generally are paid a fee of between 10 and 20 percent of sales that they help negotiate on behalf of the writer they represent.

  • who left earlier this month to become a manager and partner at Atlas Artists and Atlas Literary,

In the article about this move to Atlas Artists and Atlas Literary, it is noted as a subsudiary of Atlas Entertainment. – an American film financing and production company.

  • has signed Alex O’Loughlin as a client.
  • This marks a reunion for the duo. Burnham represented O’Loughlin for years as an agent and facilitated the actor’s casting as the lead of CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 reboot, which ran for 10 seasons.

We think he might have done a great job with this last one. The one that negotiated his last job might be best aquipped to do it again. 😀

  • Soon after the Hawaii Five-0 pilot had been picked up to series in 2010, O’Loughlin left ICM to follow Chris Hart, who had been an agent on his team, to UTA.

Not sure why this happened, but Alex must have had his reasons for doing so at the time.

  • The actor, who most recently did not have a manager, continues to be repped by UTA.

It seem that Alex was functioning without a Manager for a period of time and only made use of a Talent Agency. From this and from the IMDB listing it looks that although Atlas Artists and John will be Alex’s new Manager and Talent AgentUTA will also still be a Talent Agent for him as well.

  • The Hawaii Five-0 alum joins a long list of Burnham clients who stayed with him in the transition to management and followed him to Atlas Artists.

Seems that John have a lot of loyal clients and at the moment there are 37 of them, including Alex. Nearly all of them are Actors who are also listed as Writers, Producers and Directors and only 1 who is listed as an actor only and one as writer only.

Let us look at the different definitions and roles of Actor Representatives:

Agent

An agent is responsible for helping an actor find work and for negotiating the terms of their employment. For example, the agent keeps his eye out for roles that would be suitable for the actor and contacts the casting director to arrange auditions. Once a director hires an actor, the agent will help negotiate the contract and make sure the terms and conditions of the contract are met. The actor will have a legally binding contract with the agent, allowing the agent to negotiate on their behalf. Agents are usually paid a percentage of the actors’ fees for each job, generally between 10 to 15 percent. In California, agent fees are limited to 10 percent of an actor’s earnings.

Manager

A manager provides career guidance and advice. Managers may also provide financial and legal advice, if they are qualified to do so. While agents may have hundreds of clients, managers generally have only a few clients and spend more time with each one. A manager’s duties are far-ranging and may include advising the artist on what jobs to take, helping them to market themself, organizing advertising and publicity, advising on how to develop their talents, making travel arrangements, and advising on how to manage their income. Managers generally earn between 15 to 20 percent of the artists’ total income.

Publicist

A publicist helps to manage an artist’s relationship with the media. This may include arranging interviews with journalists; making press announcements on their behalf; organizing your blog, Twitter posts or other social media; helping them to gain publicity; arranging for public appearances, and advising on how to avoid unwanted publicity. Publicists often work for agencies and are generally paid a flat fee rather than a percentage of the artists’ income. Some publicists work on retainer, whereby the publicist earns a monthly fee for a set amount of work, such as 20 hours a week.

In Summary

Looking at all these facts and joining it with the knowledge that Alex mentioned 3 scripts in his interview with Pac Bleu in Nov 2020, we might conclude that John will not only be Alex’s new Manager but might also be better equipped to guide him in his endeavor as a writer because of his credentials as Literary Agent.

If Alex is focussing on writing, we can only hope that he will also star as an actor in whatever he writes ……… and we can only hope that whatever happens, happens soon! But soon does not mean we will see him in something soon, because unfortunately, the wheels of the entertainment industry turn slowly and take time.

As I wrote on a previous occasion it will be a long time before whatever gets made will be available for us to see.

My Thoughts

We can only hope that this will also be followed by news of a new project soon!

Beulah Koale Talking About His Big Bro #AlexOLoughlin

This past week on The Story & Craft Podcast with Marc Preston, he talked with Beulah Koale. They talked about lots of stuff and of course his time on Hawaii Five-0 as well.

It is worth your while to listen to the full podcast and make sure to click on the link to get to it, but of course, our interest would be of what he had to say about his Big Bro, Al.

While listening to the full broadcast it is easy to understand why Alex and Beulah became friends and will be close for many more years to come.

We made our own short video of the audio parts of the podcast where Beulah talked about Alex.

Transcript:

Beulah: Me and AlMe and Alex, we were meant to be best friends. So we talk to each other … almost every week, even now.

Marc: Really?

Beulah: Yeah, yeah, I talk to him. He’s my big Bro. Like … I maybe have known him the shortest amount of time. Me and Alex are like this.

And we connected. I don’t know if it’s the New Zealand /Australia thing, but we connected on a different level.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is junior-3.png

Beulah: Every time I go to Hawaii, I will go over to the house and we talk ….

Marc: So he, he stayed … he kind of posted up in Hawaii and kind of made it home?

Beulah: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He’s got a family there. His beautiful wife. He’s got Hawaiian Kids. You know, half Hawaiian kids. That’s his … yeah, that’s his home.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is junior-2.png

Beulah: I walk over to Al’s house and we would just like … I would jump into his ice bath and just hang … you know, hang with the kids.

Marc:  I know, Alex O’Loughlin, he directed at least a couple of episodes of Hawaii Five-0 I think. What’s it like to be directed by somebody that you are actually acting with, and they give them the reins of an episode? What’s that like?

Beulah: Yeah, it was awesome, because he’s my best mate. But, like … if you look back on those episodes, I was heavily in those episodes. And that was on request. Because he knows I’m his guy.

Like, I got married … I came to New Zealand and got married and I’m … I told the production in advance, I’m getting married during this time, I need a couple of weeks off. And then Al directs an episode, like the week after I get married. And I have to fly from New Zealand. I’m like, “Man I have to … I just got married, bro …”

So I got married – the day after I got married I fly to Hawaii to shoot Al’s episode. Because that’s how much I love this guy. That’s my …. that’s my guy for life, so.

I think he always asks for me because he knows, I’ll run through a brick wall for him. And vice versa.

Tribute to OCaan … #ScottCaan & #AlexOLoughlin – The Duo Who Created #McDanno

We have great and exciting NEWS!

We are closing down this fansite and will be changing our focus.

After a few months of debate, and seeing that there is no news of any new projects for Alex, we decided to shift our focus somewhere else.

And what better way to do it, than to honour the two men who by date of birth were destined to be together forever. We therefor will now use the site name “Ocaan Forever!”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is ocaan-camera-db.jpg

Yes, from now on we only be posting stuff about Alex and Scott as partners. We will also only be posting original pictures, but we see no need to credit people for them. This will be our last post on this site before we move on. So we hope you enjoy these new original, never seen before, pictures.

We ask that nobody download or share any of these pictures. They were given to us exclusively and we would like you to honour that request!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is ocaan-is-bjj-bw.jpg

Our main focus will be on their joined passion for BJJ and all the charity work they do together.

But of course, the biggest prize for us would be if they do another project together!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is ocaan-is-bjj-s.jpg

We are not sure what content the fans would prefer on the new site. Please help us by giving your input in our poll.

Options:

  1. Should we only have posts that feature both Alex and Scott together? Or can we pst stuff about them as individuals
  2. Should we move all our old Alex content that can be useful to the new site and just add Scott Caan studies to catch up?
  3.  Should we always post Alex stuff on the right and Scott on the left side of the blog?

POLL

Thank you for your input. We have been working so hard on the new site already and can’t wait to start sharing it with you.

Look out for the new link to the site on our social media pages within the next 24 hours. We will soon after that also change the names of all our pages on Twitter, IG and FB.

Our first two studies are already done and ready to be publish.  In keeping with our traditions of first studies the first one will be:

A Study of #ScottCaan’s Tattoos

and then  #ScottCaan’s Hairstyles Over The Years.

Click on the link for a special message from the boys

The last 10 years have been great.
