#AlexOLoughlin – To Shine

While Alex is taking a long break and moving on from his 10 year Hawaii Five-0 phase to the next stage of his career, I wonder if this thought is still with him?

I prefer to shine in a mediocre movie than to be un-noticed in a masterpiece.

Vanity Fair Italia,

26 May 2010

Or whether the tiresome work on Hawaii five-0 will let him decide to rather only write, direct or produce in the future? Or maybe retire from the entertainment world altogether?

Of course my wish for his future is that he will stay in the story telling business and be able to do it all, while still acting in it as well! Then he might be able to shine in his own masterpiece!

Many fans keep asking if Alex will be seen in something soon. Well, the fact is that if and whenever he decides to start a new project as an actor, it will take a while to actually see him in it.  We will first have to wait and get news of him filming that project. So any career related new Alex news will first be of filming and interviews and articles of the new project – no screentime at first. Unless production is done in total secrecy – which rarely happens in Hollywood.

If the past is any indication and if he will move onto doing a movie, chances are that it can take as long as 2 years or even more before we might actually see him in it. Once filmed, movies can take a long time to be edited and released. And now with the global pandemic of the past two years, projects take even longer.

On the other hand, TV projects are released sooner and there it can take less time to see him again, once a project is announced and start production. But still, if anything is not announced by now, chances are that it will only be seen by next year.

And as for the constant wishes of him to be James Bond  – my guess would be that that ship has sailed. Even if he still would have been interested, all the odds are against him. In 2005 when he auditioned for it he was regarded as too young and this time he will be too old to start it – and not Brittish enough I would guess. If chosen, he will then be only the 2nd non-Brit and the oldest ever to start as a Bond in history. Not good odds in that.

So what am I saying here? Fans will have to be patient and decide if they are here for the long haul, otherwise there will only be frustration for them.

Although it is not all full of excitement at the moment, it is easy to be here on the one hand. This is our hobby and we will keep on exploring the past work and things that we have not posted yet …. until the new stuff gets here to report on. And of course we will post any new news as soon as it is officially announced – that is always our first priority!

The not so easy part of being here, is craziness that comes along with running such a site as this while fans are waiting for something to happen with Alex’s career. The list of it all is endless and I decided to delete it rather than to share all the negativity. And many times some of the madness actually inspires me to do studies and posts, just to refute what has been said or done.

But I guess the good and the bad is all part of real life and online fan life as well. People will be people …..

Maybe the key to the happiness in it all lies in the difference between dealing with fans or fanatics:

A fan, according to the American Heritage College Dictionary, is “an ardent devotee, an enthusiast.”

Fanatic is defined as “a person marked by an extreme unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.”

The distinction, then, apparently rests on whether the enthusiasm is ardent or unreasoning.

And maybe with all of the madness, one might forget that fandom is supposed to be fun and none of us should be taking any of it too seriously

……. while we wait for Alex to shine!

Thank you to the Alex fans (the ardent reasonable devotees) who are sticking around!

And while we wait, you can always catch the summary of his known activities since end of H50 here:

#AlexOLoughlin – Staying Afloat

This is the transcript  of an old 2012 Australian magazine article, seemingly missed by most fans at the time – including us.

Thank you for the wonderful friend who shared it with me today.

You are a star!

There were similar articles and video interviews from that day, but some unique things said in this one as well.

Juggling fatherhood and a staring role in Hawaii Five-0, Alex O’Loughlin leads a “very full” life – but he hasn’t a clue how he does it!

by Jenny Cooney Carrillo

for TV Week

Posted Jan 2013

(Interview done in November 2012)

Alex O’Loughlin looks exhausted, but he has good reason. The 36-year old Hawaii Five-0 star and his girlfriend, Malia Jones, recently became parents to a baby boy, Lion Kahano O’Loughlin.

“If I’m not making any sense, please forgive me!”

the sleep-deprived actor tells TV Week in an exclusive chat shortly after flying in to Los Angeles.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is alex-nov-20121.png

As well as welcoming a new baby, Alex has a full house back in Hawaii, with Malia’s three-year-old son, Spike, and his own 15-year-old son, Saxon, who moved in earlier this year.

“I’m learning what happens when you put a 15-year-old and a three-year-old and a two-week-old together,” he grins.

What you learn is: There is no such thing as perfect parenting. Not only do you feel like you’re in a losing battle, but with children you are covered in poop half the time, too, so there is no integrity or dignity!”

The down-to-earth Aussie candidly admits he’d given up on love before he met Malia, a former champion surfer and swimwear model.

“I’ve always wanted another child, but I never met anyone or it just wasn’t right,” he confesses. “Then for whatever reason, the stars lined up. I guess when you’re ready, life just gives you what you are ready for!”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is alex-malia-sotb-2016.jpg

That includes Alex and Malia’s very modern family of three boys.

“I’ve always wanted Saxon to be living with me,” Alex reveals

“As it so often happens when parents separate, the boy gets to a certain age and you need to be with your dad for discipline, because Mum can’t control you, so it was time for him. Spike’s a handful too, but I love him so much.”

Obviously content in his life right now, Alex admits, however that 2012 wasn’t all smooth sailing. Back in March, he checked into rehab for a prescription painkiller addiction triggered by injuries he sustained at work playing Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett.

“There was so much action and I thought I could keep up with it all, but it was unrealistic,” he reflects.

“I pushed it too hard and got hurt. Then I got hurt again and then I got really hurt and it was a wake-up call. Thats how I had to learn, I guess, and now the stunt guys don’t even ask me to do any of it, so it’s a relief.”

While there might be less stunts from Alex this season, he does hint that there’s plenty of relationship drama ahead for his character, with things getting complicated  since Steve discovered his mother (played by Christine Lahti) is still alive.

“It’s a great season because he’s moved into this phase with Catherine (Michelle Borth) where he thinks he could settle down with her, then mum comes back – so now he’s got some heavy mummy issues,” Alex teases.

“How do you navigate through an intimate, loving, trusting relationship with a woman when the first woman in your life lied for 20 years and you thought she was dead but now she’s come back?”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is steve-doris.jpg

It’s a complicated relationship on screen, but off screen, Alex is full of praise for his TV mum, an Emmy-winning actress best known for shows like Chicago Hope and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

“Christine is amazing and a highly decorated actor who is a great asset to the show,” he says.

“Her character is actually the cause of the death of McGarrett’s father and she opens a whole Pandora’s box for him that means we’ll definitely see her returning throughout the season.”

The NIDA graduate who got his Hollywood break in vampire drama Moonlight and also starred with Jennifer Lopez in the romantic comedy film The Back-Up Plan, is also happy to sing the praises of another co-star – Scott Caan, who plays his on-screen partner, Detective “Danno” Williams.

“It’s like being placed in an arranged marriage,” he reveals. “It took a while to get comfortable because we are both Alpha guys that have different views and are pretty sure of ourselves. But, we’ve become good mates now.

We spend a lot of time together and laugh a lot, so the journey we’ve taken as Scott and Al has transferred into the bromance of the characters.”

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is alex-winking.jpg

Although, Alex chuckles when TV Week mentions that Scott had told us that Alex likes to complicate life.

“I guess that’s what you call it when you buy a house, get a puppy and take on a new lead rol at the same time,” Alex says.

“Maybe it’s because I always need to be challenged, but the amazing thing is that I seem to pull it off and I don’t know how I do that either. My life feels very full right now.”

They Say ….. #AlexOLoughlin is a Wonderful Human Being

Steve Kaplan today on SEASON 2 Epi 14 of the Long Ku Podcast with Gabriele Lehnen

Alex is a very close friend of mine. He’s a wonderful human being.

He’s a good father, he’s a good husband, he’s a good actor, he’s a good friend.

He was actually part owner of this company for a while too.

He’s just a good .. good  person.

Link to the full episode with Steve:

”Learn from a U.S. Navy Seal how to overcome your fears!”😎

My Guest: Steve Kaplan, U.S. Navy Seal & Founder Trident Adventures Hawaii

It is really worth your while to listen to the full interview, but here is the transcript of the part where they speak about Alex.

Transcript

(From Timestamp 22:48)

Steve: And here’s the thing, the guy on Hawaii Five-0, the main actor – he plays Steve McGarrett – his name is Alex. He’s a very, very close friend of mine …

Gabriele : You know my mom – the biggest fan….

Steve: Yeah

Gabriele:  …took the video.

Steve: I know, that’s right. I remember.

…. But Alex is a very close friend of mine. He’s a wonderful human being.

Gabriele : Yes.

Steve: He’s a good father, he’s a good husband, he’s a good actor, he’s a good friend.

He was actually part owner of this company for a while too.

He’s just a good .. good  person.

And he brought me on … that was the episode that he directed, the first time. That was in Season 8 – the episode he directed and he wrote the role around my personality, my character …

Gabriele: Navy SEAL

Steve: …. the way I talk and everything and I still sucked at it.

[They go on talking about him being a actor and stunt guy and his respect for what actors and stunt people do]

Steve – personal friend of Alex and he is also the owner of Trident Adventures.

(The pictures is one of the earliest we could find of Alex and Steve – back in October 2017, even before they founded Trident Adventures in Dec 2018)

My Thoughts

  • Of course we first saw Steve Kaplan on Hawaii Five-0 Episode 8:24 , but that was not the  episode which Alex wrote and directed. Alex was just listed as “story by” – meaning that the idea of the episode story was from him.

The first episode Alex directed was Episode  8:18, the 2nd one was Episode 9:17 and the 3rd and last one was of course Episode 10:07, which he wrote and Directed – and which Steve Kaplan was a part of as an actor as well.

  • If I understood  Steve correctly this also clarifies the fact that Alex is no longer, as an co-owner, part of Trident Adventures – as we suspected last year in May 2021  already, when we saw Alex and Beulah just listed as co-founders and no longer as part owners of Trident.

Aloha everyone! We just wanted to take a moment and send out a personal invitation to you from the owners of Trident Adventures Hawai’i. Come join us for some fun!

And a dive video from Gabriele:

(Posted in March 2020, but was taken in Sept 2019)

If you look closely (see the back tattoo peekaboo) you will see that Alex was taking part in this dive with them.

Article from TV Insider

‘Hawaii Five-0’: Joan Collins Talks Playing Danny’s Former Mother-in-Law

The aloha state by way of…the French Riviera?Dame Joan Collins took a circuitous route to land her March 8 guest spot on Hawaii Five-0, says executive producer Peter Lenkov.

“We met years ago in Monte Carlo at a TV festival,” he recalls. “I promised I’d bring her to Hawaii.”

When the script called for an actress to play glamorous romance novelist Amanda Savage — who has unfinished business with her former son-in-law, Det. Danny Williams (Scott Caan)Lenkov kept his word and gave the Dynasty veteran a call.

Collins (above, with Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett) fills us in on the rest.

Were you familiar with Hawaii Five-0 before this part came along?

Joan Collins: Yes, I’ve seen the show and I love it. I’m bored to tears with [hospital-drama] operations and people leaning over a cadaver, and too much shooting and sexual content and bad language. I consider Hawaii Five-0a pretty wholesome show.

What’s the one thing a role has to have for you to say yes?

Joan Collins: It has to be interesting and something I feel I can inhabit. I loved doing American Horror Story: Apocalypsesince I played two characters! And I made a great friend in Kathy Bates.

Tell us about Amanda. Does she get along with Danny?

Joan Collins: No, they don’t like each other. [Laughs]

But she likes Steve McGarrett.

[According to Lenkov, “She sees McGarrett as a potential fifth husband. Or is it sixth?”

The boys take me shopping, and we all end up bantering. I’m pretty good at banter.

Your character comes to town on a book tour. Since you’ve written both fiction and nonfiction, and your late sister, Jackie, was a prolific novelist, did that provide some inspiration?

Joan Collins: Yes, we have a scene where I’m at a book signing with Amanda’s fans applauding and saying, “We loved your last book, and we can’t wait to read this one!” It was a little bit like it has been when I’ve been writing books.

And now you’re touring England with Joan Collins Unscripted, your one-woman show. Why is this the right time for that?

It’s not the right time, believe me! I was supposed to do it in September, but I was doing American Horror Story, so I had to postpone. I shall be dashing back to a warmer climate as soon as possible!

Some of you might recall the  little story we  did on Joan’s late sister, Jackie Collins …

The tall good looking one on ‘Hawaii Five–0′ ….. #AlexOLoughlin

and her thoughts about Alex.

Jackie tweeted in 2012: “Alex O’Loughlin, one of the sexiest guys on TV. Agreed ladies??”
