‘Hawaii Five-0’: Joan Collins Talks Playing Danny’s Former Mother-in-Law
The aloha state by way of…the French Riviera?Dame Joan Collins took a circuitous route to land her March 8 guest spot on Hawaii Five-0, says executive producer Peter Lenkov.
“We met years ago in Monte Carlo at a TV festival,” he recalls. “I promised I’d bring her to Hawaii.”
When the script called for an actress to play glamorous romance novelist Amanda Savage — who has unfinished business with her former son-in-law, Det. Danny Williams (Scott Caan) — Lenkov kept his word and gave the Dynasty veteran a call.
Collins (above, with Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett) fills us in on the rest.
Were you familiar with Hawaii Five-0 before this part came along?
Joan Collins: Yes, I’ve seen the show and I love it. I’m bored to tears with [hospital-drama] operations and people leaning over a cadaver, and too much shooting and sexual content and bad language. I consider Hawaii Five-0a pretty wholesome show.
What’s the one thing a role has to have for you to say yes?
Joan Collins: It has to be interesting and something I feel I can inhabit. I loved doing American Horror Story: Apocalypsesince I played two characters! And I made a great friend in Kathy Bates.
Tell us about Amanda. Does she get along with Danny?
Joan Collins: No, they don’t like each other. [Laughs]
But she likes Steve McGarrett.
[According to Lenkov, “She sees McGarrett as a potential fifth husband. Or is it sixth?”
The boys take me shopping, and we all end up bantering. I’m pretty good at banter.
Your character comes to town on a book tour. Since you’ve written both fiction and nonfiction, and your late sister, Jackie, was a prolific novelist, did that provide some inspiration?
Joan Collins: Yes, we have a scene where I’m at a book signing with Amanda’s fans applauding and saying, “We loved your last book, and we can’t wait to read this one!” It was a little bit like it has been when I’ve been writing books.
And now you’re touring England with Joan Collins Unscripted, your one-woman show. Why is this the right time for that?
It’s not the right time, believe me! I was supposed to do it in September, but I was doing American Horror Story, so I had to postpone. I shall be dashing back to a warmer climate as soon as possible!
Some of you might recall the little story we did on Joan’s late sister, Jackie Collins …
The tall good looking one on ‘Hawaii Five–0′ ….. #AlexOLoughlin
and her thoughts about Alex.
Jackie tweeted in 2012: “Alex O’Loughlin, one of the sexiest guys on TV. Agreed ladies??”

Thank you, Foyeur. I don’t usually read Jackie Collins’ books, because I don’t care for her writing style, but I did read ‘The Power Trip’, only because of her reference to Alex. He is actually mentioned in the book.
It’s too bad the movie didn’t happen. Jackie Collins died in 2015.

Now you got me interested. How do you mean he is mentioned in the book?

I’m interested, too! Did she say she wanted him play the role of xyz?

Yes, Jackie did say he (Alex) should play the hero of the book if it was filmed. https://alexoloughlinintensestudy.wordpress.com/2015/07/18/the-tall-good-looking-one-on-hawaii-five-o/
Not sure of what the hero’s name is.
But I am just curious about how Alex or Steve is actually mentioned in the book itself. Because that is how I understand it from the comment.

Okay, so our wonderful researcher gave me the answer. And it is a bit odd to me. 😀
In the interview, Jackie said he should play the hero and from what I can see that is a guy called Aleksandr ( the main character of the book)
But in the book itself, she describes one of the other characters (Flynn) like him – although just a touch of him combined with Ryan Reynolds.
Quote from the book:
“Xuan and Flynn were not a good fit for the rest of the group, although she had to admit that Flynn was wildly sexy with his action movie-star looks – not all groomed and perfect as was Cliff Baxter. Flynn was more edgy – like a roughed-up Ryan Reynolds with a touch of Alex O’Loughlin, the actor who played Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-O.”

A touch of AOL? Just a touch? How weird and unrealistic. Scratch Reynolds. I take the whole package of AOL.

“The tall, good looking one on H50.”
Yep!
Let’s add “The one that showed commitment, never phoned it in, never complained and never made a mockery of the show.” It lasted ten years because of the tall, good looking one.
He is more than just being gorgeous.

Amen. Nothing more needs to be said. This is why the possibility of never again seeing Alex on a screen, is so painful. He would be an asset to any production.
Whatever business involvement Alex has with Egan Inouye’s studio and Trident, may be enough to keep him busy, but believe me, I mean this with all love and respect: There may come a day when Malia might want to get him out from underfoot. LOL
Alex’s aversion to fame is strong, but I hope a project or idea will come to him, that he can’t resist.

Exactly my thoughts! He would be a great asset to any production or maybe he would be able to tell stories that speak to him in the future if that´s still what he wants. I´m sure, he had a lot to tell. Unfortunatelly we don´t know what he wants for his future and there certainly are some aspects regarding working in Hollywood that we are not aware off and which might keep him away from coming back. We will see. But I sure hope, he will let people know if he decides to or can´t come back for one reason or the other. And I think, his aversion to fame would not stop him doing what he wants to do if he really wants to come back. After all he lives in Hawaii and not in Hollywood. But he said, he wants to focus on his two little men and also on himself and Malia. Again: we don´t know if that means a change in his further career plans but if it is, he is doing what he thinks is the best for himself and his family and that´s fine. But if he wants to come back, he and every producer or TPTB know there are a lot of people from all over the world who are happy to see him in a new role and/or – more “and” as “or” for me though 😀 – as director and maybe writer. But it´s his choice.

I can appreciate Alex taking a break as needed to shift into gear to figure out what his next phase will be. It can’t be an easy task after coming off a 10 year stint on a successful show. Given the scope of his tslents I would think he certainly would not want to rush into anything just for the point of being busy. Hopefully the uncommitted and leisurely time is giving him that space he so richly deserves. All that being said I hope that he is close or soon will be close to coming back to us giving us all that he so richly possesses.💞💞💞
