#AlexOLoughlin Filming #H50 Epi 9:10 & Epi 9:11

Two of my favourite episodes of Season 9 were all about McGarrett and his story with Joe.

First Joe’s death and then avenging Joe’s.

We never posted the pictures that were taken while it was filmed.

Here is a look back to that time…

In honor of Hawaii Five-0’s very last episode, I am posting a throwback pic of the time I met the cast and crew while they filmed at my house, including the pup-loving Hawaii resident from Oz, Alex O’Loughlin. At the time, my folks were trying to socialize me by introducing me to as many people as possible. It was a bonus that the throngs of people I got to meet this day were the cool crew and cast members of @hawaiifive0cbs. Best wishes to everyone from the show. Much aloha.🌺 #jackrussellterrier #jackrussell #jrt #jackrussellpuppy #jackrussellsofig #jackrussellsofinstagram #jackrussellmoments #jackrusselllove #dogstagram #dogsofinstagram #instadog #puppy #puppylove #808dogs #hawaiidog #hawaiidogs #dogsofhawaii #smalldog #terrier #h50 #tbt #throwbackthursday #throwback #alexoloughlin

    Oh thanks for posting these.

The big question I have now is: Does the camera love him or does he really look that good in real life, for real? 😛

On a serious note, that was a good episode. I did wish the writers left some of these characters, the ones that meant something to McGarrett, alive, it was a little too much for me. I mean, he wasn’t written with much of a personal life so, I probably would have left Joe alive, but paralysed, needing someone 24-7. Or his mother, almost died, but then they discover she has dementia or something.

I’ve always liked Joe Wright, because he brought that SEAL touch that made the epis he was in different from regular cop shows. Epis with Joe were always packed with action, with intrigue, and many times he sparked Steve’s emotions off. You know, Alexpressions and all that… (BTW John Locke was one of my favorite characters in ‘Lost’ too. In fact, I like Terry O’Q a lot).

Joe was such an asset to the show that I fail to see what purpose was sought by PL when he decided to kill him. But Joe paralysed, needing 24 h attention, no. The audience would rather remember him as a soldier killed serving his country than as a disabled man dependent on others.

The pics are great, particularly those of Alex with animals. He does have a way with them! Thank you, FOYeur!

Joe is a good character, but I feel like death is such a cheat – I mean we’ll all die. I wanted to see him handle a tough personal situation with the same courage as tough ‘military’ situations. And how would Steve face this? And then balancing how Jow is facing it vs how Steve is facing it – I would have liked to see them in a situation like that. I think these two characters could give new meaning to these kinds of issues. But, perhaps you’re right, perhaps the writers made the right decision.

    • Those who have met Alex in person, say that he looks even better in real life.
Good characters in H50 were mostly used as plot devices. The writers could somehow never make more of the great characters, than just an episode or two.
A paralyzed Joe, or Doris with dementia, does not really fit into an action procedural cop show. And looking after such people can sometimes be a worst fate than death for those looking after them – not something I would have liked Steve to handle as well.

Does he look better? My, my, my 🙂

I think Alex could pull off that kind of Steve, the kind that has to show one set of extreme emotions as he drives to ‘where ever Joe or his mum is’, get out of the car, shake it off, go in there a completely different person, come out, fall apart, and then get himself together again and get back to work, completely focused. It is a bit of jerking about, in 15 minutes there are like 5 different, extreme emotions, but it can be done. And I think Doris could do dementia (or some other illness) in a very different way. Oh, especially if it’s something where she’d suddenly start talking and no one would know if she’s sharing a memory or something she made up. But, like I said in the previous comment, perhaps the writers made the right decision.

        • Yes, i´m sure Alex could pull off that. But that wouldn´t work in a show like H5O which is about paradise, bikini and now and then a bit darker situation like a crime. I remember that interview about the episode Alex wrote himself. He told, he/McGarrett killed Doris in the first draft and he was told, it´s too dark for the show. I still would like to read that first draft btw. So I think, if TPTB are not even willing to accept a “dark” storyarc which would probably open a can of worms and cause all kinds of disastrous emotional situations they wouldn´t accept storylines like the ones you are talking about because it would bring a big amount of RL difficult situations and not allow people to escape their RLs. After all H5O was about “having fun in the sun” with a couple of serious situations which are far away from what most of us will ever experience in our RL and hence are interesting for us – as long as we are not victim of a crime ourselfes.

Thank you for sharing. That is so fascinating, I did not know that. I thought it was about showing how bad things can happen anywhere, so I thought this would be right up their street, as in ‘an illness is not a sign of weakness, look, it happened to Steve’s mum’ – i.e. an illness can happen to anyone, so we shouldn’t judge people who are ill. Okay, well, thanks again.

BTW, yeah, I’d love to read the first draft. Sounds like it was better than the draft they made. Thanks for sharing that too. I knew he wrote that one, I had no idea it wasn’t made as written in the first draft. Sometimes others really mess up a good idea. Now if he had killed his mum, that would have been one heck of a dilemma to take back to ‘paradise on earth’. I really think they should have kept that. As I said, I too would love to read the first draft.

            • The writers could never handle any illness correctly. They made a total mockery of transplant surgery.
Someone got shot and had a major operation and later that day they would run around chasing bad guys.
There was never any realism in any form of disability on the show (mental of physical) – so I highly doubt if something so serious, would have gotten any better treatment in the writer’s room.

            • Agree about what you wrote about illness. I would have loved to watch that. I´m surprised they wrote that episode about Steve suffering of radiation poisoning at all which I really liked. But they didn´t get back to that topic again because it´s probably too dark for H5O if they can´t write it the way they did.

              • Just like good characters, they also used illnesses as plotdevices.
Setting up something that could be good and interesting for the effect of it, and then dropping it without any further mention.

Yeah, they handled illness badly, you’re right. It’s like they shied away from those. The only one I really remember is little Charlie when Danny found out that he’s the father. Now, Danny’s character is written with more of these twists and additions. I don’t know, something has always bugged me about the way Steve was written. I feel like whole chunks are completely missing. I liked the episode when aunt Deb gets married. That was cute. They could have added at least her a little bit more. I mean, Alex still played Steve really well, in fact, when an actor manages to give heart and soul to a character written as ‘get up, exercise, go to work, the only people you know are at work, ok fine, we’ll give you this one romantic fling outside of work’, that’s a really good actor. And I know the writers could have done better – everyone has someone from their past. Steve has people in the army and that’s it – unless I’ve missed an episode? I would have liked to see an episode with Steve’s friend from childhood either being in trouble or causing trouble. Someone who got up to no good with ‘young’ Steve. Something like Steve is investigating a murder and they come to question an old lady, and she tells them how 27 years ago someone stole her dead dog from the woods. She shows them a picture of the dog and Steve remembers a time he was in those woods, with a friend, they were ‘hunting, they thought they shot an animal, only to find a dead dog. Horrified and terrified, they picked up the dog and threw him into the ocean. And then they find that this friend was in a relationship with the victim. The case is, of course, solved but now there’s a little thing of telling the poor old lady what happened to her dog all those years ago.

  3. Esp. 9.10 is one of my all time favorites.
9.11 was a good one but some ‘things’ have been redundant and frankly just irritating.
But his acting in both epis was terrific.
