#H50 – Is Saying its Final Goodbye

‘Hawaii Five-0’ To End After 10 Seasons On CBS, Sets Two-Hour Series Finale

For Deadline

By Nellie Andreeva

EXCLUSIVE: CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 will be coming to an end. The popular action crime drama series will wrap its 10-year, 240-episode run with a two-hour series finale on Friday, April 3.

Developed by Peter M. Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as a reimagining of Leonard Freeman’s classic series and by Lenkov for the show’s entire run, Hawaii Five-0 has been a strong profit generator tor for CBS. In addition to its solid ratings performance, initially on Monday, and as a Friday anchor for the past seven seasons, Hawaii Five-0 has been a big international seller for CBS TV Studios, seen in more than 200 countries. Additionally, it was one of the last broadcast drama series to score a blockbuster off-network deal, landing $2 million an episode from TNT during the series’ first season on CBS.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye to a hit franchise that carried on the legacy of the original with such distinction while establishing its own signature style,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “From episode one, Hawaii Five-0 has been a huge success for us. Thanks to the amazing talents of the producers, writers, cast and crew, it has played a key role for a decade on our schedule and helped establish our powerhouse Friday night. We cannot be prouder of its quality, longevity and are thankful for the passionate fan-devotion it inspired.”

Hawaii Five-0 will end its run with its original stars Alex O’Loughlin as McGarrett and Scott Caan as Danno. I hear both of their current contracts are up at the end of this season. O’Loughlin suffered a serious back injury during the early seasons of the show, and has been dealing with effects from it ever since. There was speculation that he may leave the show two years ago but he stayed on after receiving a stem cell treatment for his back. I hear this time around, he felt he could not continue. I hear the network explored continuing Hawaii Five-0 with Caan’s Danno and a new partner but ultimately, everyone felt that this was the right time to end the series

“This show has been pretty much every waking moment for the last 10 years of my life,” said O’Loughlin. “Everywhere I go on this planet, in every language, I am McGarrett to all these people. What we’ve done, what we’ve accomplished, it’s extraordinary. I can’t really put words to express my level of gratitude. I’m just glad to have been a part of this, a part of history and I’m going to miss it. And to the fans, I don’t know how to thank you guys. Thank you for following us the way you have. I’m going to miss you. Aloha.”

Launching a Hawaii Five-0 reboot had been a top priority for CBS TV Studios for more than a decade. There were multiple unsuccessful attempts with other writers and producers until Lenkov came on board, teaming with Kurtzman and Orci for the pilot. It was the first of a slew of successful reboots Lenkov has delivered for CBS and CBS TV Studios.

“Hawaii Five-0 has been such a blessing to me and all of the people who have worked on this incredible show,” said Lenkov. “I truly learned the meaning of ‘ohana’ as the viewers embraced us and the people of Hawaii welcomed us with the privilege to film on their shores. I am forever indebted to the creative genius that was Leonard Freeman who gave us such a beautiful story to begin with. And my eternal gratitude to our cast, led by our hero Alex O’Loughlin, the writers, the production team, our CBS ohana, and most importantly –YOU, the fans, who allowed us to come to work with pride and made our series such a success. Mahalo.”

Hawaii Five-0 currently stars O’Loughlin, Caan, Ian Anthony Dale, Meaghan Rath, Beulah Koale, Katrina Law, Taylor Wily, Dennis Chun, Kimee Balmilero and Chi McBride.

Like most long-running series, it went through multiple cast transitions. That included the controversial exit of original co-stars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park after Season 7. Returning for the two-hour finale are recurring cast members James Marsters (Victor Hesse), William Sadler (John McGarrett) and Mark Dacascos (Wo Fat).

Hawaii Five-0, which consistently wins its time period, has been watched by almost 40 million viewers this season. In addition, the show has ranked in the top 15 or higher of broadcast dramas during its run. Also, Hawaii Five-0, is CBS’ most social primetime drama, generating 47 million impressions, 3.7 million engagements and 3.8 million video views, season-to-date.

“For 10 seasons, Alex, Scott and the rest of the talented Five-0 cast have brought fans exciting adventures in a spectacular tropical paradise,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “We specifically want to thank Peter and the incredibly talented production team for 10 years of consistently outstanding television. The drama has been a great success for the Studio and Network, and as a global franchise for our company. We’re pleased to give it a big sendoff and that viewers will have the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters as the final season wraps.”

Lenkov executive produces the series with David Wolkove, Matt Wheeler, Kurtzman and  Orci.

Very sad to be saying farewell to the most amazing cast and crew, and a special thanks to #alexoloughlin for 10 incredible years of hard work and dedication. It’s been an a blessing to have documented the ride! #aloha #h50

As a fan of the show it makes me sad. But they couldn’t keep going forever and I hope they wrap it up nicely. It was a good run. Will always be a little sad that they didn’t manage to give McGarrett a proper love interest and develop that side of his character.

As a fan of Alex O’Loughlin I hope this means that we get to see him doing different projects and perhaps more movies.

I’m surprised. The shows consistently wins Friday night ratings. With only 6 episodes to go, it’s going to be a rush job at the end. That’s not a good way for a 10 season show to end, but it’s happened before (think JAG).

I am shocked. I was certain here was a renewal for at least a partial season 11 to wrap up story lines but it seems that is not to be. Hopefully we will get a two hour series finale that will satisfy all, if not most, of us PL said that Cath would be there to the end, so I expect him to keep his word and hope to see her or find out that McGarrett is going off to find her with that ring in his pocket.

Alex will find many other projects to fulfill his artistic needs. We will follow his journey.

Best wishes to the entire cast and crew for entertaining us for ten years.

yes PL did say Catherine would be there until the end, and she
sure as hell better be, with Steve standing right by her side, with
a ring in his hand. If we don’t get to see him weekly, at least give us that.
      sure as hell better be

I hope you are joking. That character while technically is a rounded up good person, still dumped him for a job she lied about.

She used him for a booty call when she returned for konos wedding knowing he had long term romantic expectations she had no intention of being part of.

Even Alex has said in interviews that regardless of how the show ends, he hoped it would not be getting back together with Catherine. He said he could not see Mcgarrett ever having a romantic relationship with Catherine again because of the way she ended it. While still caring about her, she chose a job over him.

At least I hope that doesn’t happen. He should be fictionally happy in a long term relationship and maybe even father children as he has mentioned wanting to have sometime in the future and after he gets over the liver transplant and radiation sickness etc. Just not Catherine.

I think we’ve known this day was going to come sooner or later but it does not negate the sadness that I feel for the show ending as it means not seeing Alex regularly. I support him and all that he chooses to do esp after all the physical pain he has endured with his back. I just hope that if he does take a break and I expect he will he will that he’ll return to us in some new project{s} in some new way shape or form. Besides you can’t keep a good man down!! I wish him the very best in whatever he chooses to do. Will love him always!!!!

  7. So incredibly sad to hear this I have spent decades with Alex, Moonlight , Three Rivers all his great movies and now Hawaii 50 . I am sad that CBS did not take better care of him. But why would he stay in so much pain when the writers can’t write better stories , He is an incredible story teller, writer, actor , and awesome behind the camera. I believe Alex will show up somewhere great after a good rest. I plan on being with him always, Aloha

I can’t say that I’m surprised. While I love the cast, the writing hasn’t been the best over the last few years. I really hope Alex branches out – oh how I’d love to see him on the big screen again. I will miss my Friday nights with 5-0, though. This site is great…hope it continues!

    • Let’s hope that there will be some offers for roles coming in for him after this.
Fact is, making movies take a long time and even if he gets a movie tomorrow, we might only see it in 1 or 2 years time.
It will be hard, but we will be here looking for news.

I’m sad, but I guess it had to end sometime. I hope Alex continues to act, direct, & write. He is multi-talented. Hope to see him in other projects.

I was quite surprised at this moment of the season. But yet I saw it coming for a while since Alex tvought about quitting a couple of years back. Besides, I had the feeling that Alex was not doing all that good at times in a few episodes S9 and S10. The statement about his back issues kind of confirms tjis to me. Actually he had me worried a lot lately and I am quite happy he will take care of himself like that now. On the other side I am pretty sad for the fact tjat I (we) will not get live news and pics around Alex and his life any more. That thought is somehow unbearable to me. I am so happy I found and know your page and hope that you will be able to keep track with Alex’ actions. Thanks so much for all you publish!!!!! And all your effort and work!!!!!

Alex seemed fine to me in S9 and S10. Maybe a little tired at times, but nothing to worry about. I certainly wasn’t worried about him, and I saw no reason to be. There has been nothing indicating there was anything to worry about. The last time I was worried about him was S7-S8, when his back issues were really bad. He even said the reason he was thinking about leaving was his back, not because he didn’t want to do the show anymore. In May 2017, he did say that the stem cell treatments were magic for his back, so his back was fixed.

However, he also said at the time he could see himself doing another “one or two seasons.” When he was asked if he could match Jack Lord’s record of 12 seasons, he kind of laughed, said that was a long time and said he could do another couple of years. I don’t think he was ever going to go past 10 seasons.

The effects of all those years of stunts and back injuries aren’t going to just go away because Alex’s back is healed. That’s not how it works. He’s almost 44 years old, and this is a very physical job. One wrong stunt, and his back could be permanently injured or worse he could end up paralyzed. He’s too young to risk his health and his life like that for a television show. He has a family to think about – a wife and three sons. When he renewed his contract for S9, he said CBS had to be “reasonable” and he needed a “little help with scheduling.” He wants more time with his family.

Though I’ve felt for a long time that Alex deserved a show more worthy of his talent, I will miss him. I hope he has a long rest, and back surgery, if it’s required. I look forward to Alex’s next project, whatever it may be.

    • teachergrl23

Alex specifically said he did stem cell treatments to avoid back surgery. There are very obvious reasons for why he’d want to avoid surgery, considering what happened to him in S2. Back surgery requires painkillers afterwards, and clearly he doesn’t want to go down that road again.

As long as Alex continues to reside in Hawaii, I see no reason to rule out seeing him direct some episodes of Magnum, or do a guest appearance of Steve McGarrett returning to the Island for visit. That holds true for any of the cast who call Hawaii their home.

Having said this, I am reminded that PL said years ago that he already knew how the series would end, So even though we are a little surprised that the series is ending abruptly for us, he has been prepared for this for quite awhile.

More than ever, since most of us are sad to see the end of the show, despite the feeling that the end was not that long off, it helps to remember that this is a make believe TV show with make believe characters who behave the way the writers want them to act and the actors and actresses are simply reading their lines and doing their jobs as best they can. Whether you like the characters or not should have no bearing on how you feel about each of the actors.

Whatever the ending, the sun will still come up the next day. If it leaves some of us happy, some of us angry or some of us confused, it will have no long term effect for us personally.

I follow every interview that PL gives very carefully and I have never found any incident when he has been untruthful. Sometimes he is vague, sometimes he is just musing about possibilities but when he is specific you can take that as gospel.

The finale will have something for everybody and that will be a fitting ending for the series.

Devastated that I won’t be seeing Alex on TV regularly anymore. It’s been a constant source of joy to me for 10 years. However I understand if Alex needs to look after his health and he feels that would be easier without the constraints of H5-0. I wish him well in whatever he decides to do next. I will miss the series but I will miss Alex more than anything. Hopefully he’ll stay in showbiz and we’ll have a chance to see him now and again. Aloha!

I’m so devastated by this unexpected piece of news. Only a few days ago we were hearing rumours of a S11, and now this!

I’m so sorry to hear that Alex put an end to it because of his back injury. He was so hopeful with his stem cells treatment, but it seems it has not worked for him after all. Maybe this season is so short because he’s in real pain and can take no more (it’s true that sometimes he has been looking tired lately).

My only consolation is that CBS realized that H50 could not continue without Alex. As we have commented here time and again, all these years of H50 have been possible thanks to Alex, his professionalism and his charisma. He has simply carried the show. Since he leaves because of a real physical injury, and what’s more one he got working for the show, not because of money or ego issues, I do hope that CBS won’t forget him and will soon develop another, quieter project where he can star. There are plenty of stories that could be filmed in Hawaii where Alex wants to live, and part of the technical local crew could go on working.

Of course Alex may choose to stay in the business as a writer, a producer or a director, without screen time. If so, his decision will be hard to digest, but we will have to respect it. What else can we do except supporting him? Though I shudder just at the thought of it.

I do hope that Alex will recover from his injury for good, and that we will see him on screen soon after H50. I do hope too that you FOYeur and Paula will find all kind of news, even if tiny, about our Alex and will continue your excellent work with this blog. There’s zero chances we’ll ever hear about Alex here in Europe, whereas if he attends a charity, is invited for an interview or whatever, you in the States or Australia will know, so we don’t let us down, dear friends.

  33. This is bittersweet, I love to see Alex every week but most of the story lines lately have been boring and not about McGarret. The stories we have gotten for Steve and the Danny episode a few weeks go are the gems but have been few and far between lately. They were able to wrap up Doris, Catherine will probably never be wrapped up but at this point who cares? Though I would be happy to see them end up together but not a deal-breaker for me. At the end of the day the real enduring relationship is the friendship between Steve and Danny, That will never end.

I didn’t see the announcement until today but i was thinking last night that Quinn was a great addition to the show and I really like her story-line with Noelani in last night’s episode.

Anyway, we are blessed to have gotten ten years out of this show because early on the naysayers were saying how it would be cancelled.

Thank you Foyeur and Paula for all your hard work and awesomeness over these last 8 years I have been here. (I was a little late to the 50 party but caught up quickly) Aloha!

  35. After a first shock I am now eager to learn what the future holds for Alex. I am pretty sure we will see him again. We Alexfans have gone through this two times already. Alex always came out stronger.
Here’s what I said on my Instagram after I had somewhat digested the news:
    >>I am sad. But I am sad for really selfish reasons. I will miss Alex O’Loughlin on my screen every week. I will miss all the wonderful new pics from SOTB every year. I will miss suffering, smiling, laughing together with the wonderful character Steve McGarrett. When Steve cried, the world cried. When Steve smiled, the world smiled.

And why is that? Because of one amazing actor who brought Steve McGarrett to life. The actor who WAS Steven J. McGarrett in all his facets. The emotional one, the badass, the smart one, the mentor, the fixer of broken toys, the benevolent dictator and first and foremost: the HUMAN!

I’ve always said: No Alex – No 50! And that’s it!

But Alex is still there, his scope of talents, his commitment, his energy, his personal drive, his kindness…

Another chapter will open, we will see other characters come to life with this great actor.

    So let’s not be sad.

    Here’s to new beginnings!<<

Alex has looked tired and haggard to me for several years. I’m really sorry to hear that his back trouble hasn’t been resolved. He needs an extended period of time to rest and fully restore his health. He may need back surgery.

I believe that Alex will be invited to direct episodes of Magnum, P.I. And it would be fun if he guest stars as Steve McGarrett on Magnum here and there to irritate Thomas Magnum and to help him solve cases.

I hope that Alex will do many acting, directing, writing and producing projects in the future. I’d love to see him on the big screen again. But he needs to rest now.

I’ve spent ten wonderful years enjoying Alex up close and personal as Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-O. It’s been an honor to come here and share the show with everyone. I’m excited for his future plans, whatever they may be.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to FOYeur and Paula for the amazing work you have put in over many years to give us this extraordinary site, the best in all fandom for Alex O’Loughlin. I share the sadness of the rest of the fandom, but I can’t say I am all that surprised at the announcement. I am actually surprised at the seeming shock of all the people involved in the show. I hope what appears to be a quick ending doesn’t mean things are not properly wrapped up. The recent shows have not really led down paths that would really bring closure – maybe the episode with Eddie ptsd… I hope that contingency plans have always been in place to bring about closure at whatever timeline they were given.
If the rumors of Alex’s health are true, that makes me sad, because it could affect his future work. I had simply thought this year would be a good time to end things professionally. At some point, Alex (and others on the show) were going to have to move on. As I approach Alex’s age, even in a less physically demanding job, I can already feel the effects of aging. I am having to figure out whether I can continue my work into older age and then what I can do for the rest of my career.
I am thankful for all of you who put together Alex updates because he is the reason I watch H50, and I hope there will be opportunities to see him onscreen in the future. Even if I can’t watch him, it will also be great to see what I can of his next endeavors. To give a bit of love to others on the show, I hope to see more of Kimee on Magnum (or any other thing she finds to do) and I will definitely pay attention to Beulah’s work.

I wish you all the best in furthering your careers and in happiness and health; especially Alex with his injury. You’re an awesome stunt man & you make gorgeous male children!! Aloha Five-O ❤️🙏👏🏝😎
