#H50 10.12 & #MagnumPI Crossover tonight – promos

At long last it is Hawaii Friday again, and this time it is Hawaii Five-0 crossover night with Magnum PI. Some looking forward to this for a while now and although I am not a big crossover fan, it seems kind of exciting.

Of course anything with Alex in it, is exciting for us. 😀

Seems like a lot of action and witty one liners will be served.

And according to showrunner Peter Lenkov there will be lots of easter eggs to be found. (for those who know the shows well)

Peter: “There are a lot of Easter eggs that are nods to the shows. We’re playing into the fact that the audience knows the shows well and these characters are discovering each other for the first time. It’s very fun.” – TV Insider, 2 Jan 2020

Literally CANNOT wait!!! Soooo excited! Alex looks hot, per usual, and I have seen sneak peeks…. they may even mention Joe White, as that is my hope.

  2. I feel like the loneliest girl on this planet because I don’t like crossovers and I don’t like this new Magnum and his team. (Higgins was Robin Masters! Period. End of Conversation! 😉 )
But Alex is there, large and in charge. And these carguments are enjoyable. And they know he’s legend, like Junior knew. And someone else is not there… Hm, wait, it’s getting better and better.

Well, you’re not the loneliest girl on the planet. I don’t like crossovers as a rule, and especially won’t like this one as it may be too Magnum-centered, considering that Magnum is PL’s new beloved baby. Anything that may dull Alex’s performance is bound to get on my nerves. I’ve managed to watch H50 S10 (but not S9 as yet!) and yesterday night I saw Doris’death. Everything you ladies commented about Alex’s fantastic work is absolutely true, and I’m not prepared to face a team from another show sharing Alex’s screen time.

Plus the original Magnum is easily one of my favorite old shows and I don’t feel inclined to watch the new one. It’s unfair, I know, and I should give them a chance, but there it is.

But I’ll watch the crossover, just to make odious comparisons, and because I’d watch anything with Alex in it, even if he played a dumb pineapple in the Dole plantation!

I am reserving judgment about this cross over until after I see both episodes. I have already rolled my eyes at yet another team member (Junior) being kidnapped when we learned about this earlier, so I would like very much to be pleasantly surprised. I wonder if we will be served McGarrett-lite?

Sometimes I could swear I hear this show gasping for breath.

Not really a fan of the crossover but I will watch Hawaii Five 0. Always love watching Alex! Not watching Magnum, don’t like it, loved the original and it looks like there’s no McGarrett in the Magnum part, so no reason to watch.

I am not a fan of this Magnum and I never watch it. For Alex I’d give pretty much anything a shot! He makes it worth it.😍

Agree with everyone. New Magnum boring. Tried watching it a number of times. That being said I adored the sneak peek with McGarrett in the car with Tc, RicK and Magnum and Tc and Rick were geeking out over McGarrett, much to Magnums chagrin.

  7. Yeah as really it shows in the Magnum peeks CIA rounds up Steve but how many times have you seen that before? Seems like he will manage to get away as you can’t cage McGarrett for long. Hate he, Lou are not in the Magnum PI thing.

Good Grief, if the crossover is so bad for everyone then just don’t watch any of it.

I enjoyed the 5O episode the crossover. It was great. Loved the banter between Steve and Magnum. The car arguments were funny. The Magnum wasn’t that good. First of all, there was no Steve and Grover at all. It was hard to relation to the original crime. Higgins counsel Tani about having a relation with a co-worker was way too much. They are both co-workers not like dating the boss. Which I definitely don’t like. Way too much drama. Would the relation goes over, then the whole team would be be uncomfortable. It would wreck the whole Ohana aura. This is the whole problem about dating Catherine and then hired with 5O. It was better when she was just with a really smart girlfriend that gave him way too much classified info. I think the way both teams started working seemed believable. Steve and Grover not involved in the second episode was stupid. Crossovers are OK. Both shows are on Hawaii. It is believable that they would cross lines some time. It didn’t have to be back to back episodes. I liked when the girl from NCSI L.A helped Steve and Joe White with the “Shelbourne” name. Simple and so huge. Changed the direction of the show. And whats with no Danny? They don’t even give some lame excuse abut why he isn’t there? How can he still have a job? Seems that he has used any vacation, personal and sick days by now! As always, I rattled on too much.

I agree with everything you said, the H50 part was great, the Magnum part not so great. Can’t wait for the next episode! Hope we see more Steve and Danny.

Dq I love your analysis and agree with it. The Hawaii Five-O segment is great. I love the way the story rolls out and how everyone from both shows are integrated into the plot. Love the geeking out over McGarrett. But then the Magnum portion was slow and pretty lame. Where were McGarrett and Grover?

The ratings are fantastic! Hawaii Five-O won the night with 7.99 million viewers! It beat Blue Bloods. And Magnum pulled 7.81 million viewers, the highest rating since it debuted in September 2018. Peter’s plan to put the shows back to back is working. The Magnum ratings are increasing each week, led by the strong Hawaii Five-O numbers.

I boycotted this new Magnum, too, because I love the original show. I’ve finally started to watch it and it’s growing on me. Times have changed, it’s not 39 years ago when the original Magnum debuted. So, I’ll probably watch it, intermittently. Some of its storylines have been very good. I do miss the wonderful banter between the original male Higgins (Robin Masters) and Magnum. John Hillerman was a brilliant character actor. And I miss Thomas Magnum’s light touch and general silliness. Tom Selleck purposely played against his good looks by being goofy and somewhat of a loser as the freeloader P.I.

I’m really concerned about Alex. I’ve noticed that he looks very tired. He doesn’t look happy. The less we see of Scott, the more Alex looks depressed,

    • Hi Adele.
Just remember, Alex is not Steve and episodes are done a month or two before broadcast. And yes, of course Alex carry a lot more weight for the show because he has been carrying the lead role alone since Scott made a deal in Season 4 to have less time on set.
      What do I mean?
First of all, they might be trying to let Steve look more tired and stressed after all he has been through – it has been a tough year for Steve. Losing Joe and Mom. And there has been subtle indications that they will take that story, of a stressed Steve, further.
Secondly, I rather look at the latest real life pictures of Alex . And to be honest he looks fantastic and relaxed on them. Take a look: https://alexoloughlinintensestudy.wordpress.com/2019/12/23/alexoloughlin-friends-with-some-more-mma-bjj-fun/

        FOYeur:

That was a brilliant assessment of why “Steve” may look a bit tired. It could just be the way the writers are allowing the character to display what his recent losses have done to him. At least it is not business as usual as it was after Liver and Radiation.

Scott has been gone so long, if not in actuality but certainly in practicality, that whether his Danny character is present or not has no effect on what is happening with McGarrett. Other characters have stepped up or been added to help him through these tough times.

And I agree. Alex looks just fine, even if “Steve” is a bit weary.

        Liked by 1 person

    • Are you seriously suggesting that Alex looks depressed (he doesn’t!!!) because Scott’s not there? Really? When was the last time you saw pics of Alex? I mean ALEX, you know, not STEVE. They are two different persons. Because to me Alex looks perfectly fine and really happy in all of them.
Remember the pics from the private screening of his fantastic episode? He was with his wife, his close friends like Beaulah Koale, Stephen Paul Kaplan and James Beck, who had big parts in this episode, and he looked incredibly happy and blessed. No Scott in sight btw.
So, in short, don’t let the McDanno fanitis infect real life.
      Or shorter: ugh.

I think that Scott and Alex were really close friends for the first two or three years of the series. Then, as Scott reduced his number of episodes and his filming time in Hawaii, the friendship began to fade. Alex has become close friends with other cast and crew members, his SEAL and diving buddies, and other wonderful people in Hawaii. I heard a recent podcast interview with Scott. He only films six days per MONTH in Hawaii, so he’s really not there at all anymore. Alex loves Hawaii. Scott loves LA and NYC.

Time changes us all and everyone moves on.

I think that they are probably friends–just not the joined at the hip best buddies some fans want to believe. Like people who work together, relations are cordial because they are both basically good guys but the deep friendships that Alex formed with some of his buddies from way back when he was just starting out as an actor, and the newer ones he made with his SEAL friends are based on other things than just the coincidence of working on the same set. I am sure SC has some close friends he has known and treasured for many years, too. This is why I just shake my head at those fans who insist that if one leaves the show so will the other. Each will do what is in his best interest and that is how it should be. Sometimes fan fantasy gets out of hand.

I don’t confuse Scott with Danny. i like Scott. I wish Danny would take Rachel and his kids and move back to NJ.

Did you say he only works SIX days a month? Is this accurate?

There’s a brand new podcast interview with Scott posted on several fan websites which I listened to yesterday. He said he works six days a month on the show. He’s barely in most episodes now. And it’s why the continuity of the episodes is so weird. Danny’s at the table, then he disappears on the actual missions, never to be discussed again. I like Scott, too. Scott hangs with his lifelong buddies in LA, friends he’s had for 25-30+ years, lol from his hip hop days and earlier.

For some reason the audio cut out 3/4 of the way. I could go back and try again but I see no reason. So, he works about 6 days a month and they film more than one Epi on those days? Did i understand that correctly? But the comment from the interviewer about making money in his sleep and which he seemed to acknowledge, was more interesting.

I get that this “Danny” role is not artistically challenging but maybe if he was there more often the writers could give him something to make his fans cheer. It’s probably too late anyway.

I think Scott shoots his portions of multiple episodes during the six days he’s there. It must be confusing to the other cast members because they’re shooting table (or other) scenes from several different episodes back to back rather than shooting one episode in continuity. That means that everyone has to be studying several scripts at the same time, figuring out what their character is doing in the different episodes, etc.

                Like

                • Kathy, I can not see how he would be able to shoot different episodes at a time, because every episode uses a different director.
They only time I could really see them do it, was with the episode Alex directed. Scott was not there when they originally shot it, but of course with Alex on hand to do the rest that Scott needed to be in. And fans on set actually saw that shooting.
But that is not a luxury which every director can do.

              • Mama, I would like to add to your comment here with a quote from what Alex himself said way back in 2011, at a seminar for actors in Hawaii:

Alex: “Everything you do is an experience you can draw upon for a role. Never mind that the project you’re in isn’t good; shine as bright as you can. And find the truth. We are either in the truth or we’re not.The truth is difficult to get to. This conversation we are having is the truth. We get to this place and the cameras are rolling, we’re great.”

Especially as an artist it’s not the project’s fault (or the writing) if it’s not good, it’s you. Do your best. The artist makes the difference.

I believing him (Scott) working only 6 days a month in Hawaii. That’s in his contract. I have did harder that Danny has so much time away from the Hawaii 5O task job. How much time away from any job can a person not come into work and still have a job? Is he just on call? It once to be when some sort of lame excuse for why he wasn’t there. Now it’s like it’s only when he doesn’t have something else to do that day. The rest of the team comes to work everyday. Why not him? He should just move back to NJ with Rachael. He is so much away from the show that eventual everyone would forget that he was ever there. At the first of the show his bantering with Steve was cute. Then it starting more biting. Now it is just stupid. Steve has plenty of Ohana family for support. Also, he needs a woman to come home to for some down time away from his tense job. I mean completely away from job. Maybe he could go to a High School reunion and meet an old flame from his past. Why is still Junior living with him? Even Tani has her own home. That has to stifle both of their loves lives. Probably why Lynn left. No more romance candle dinners when there is a third wheel in the house. And no strip teases in the living room. Not to even think bout the thin walls. Steve is an adult. He needs for his house to be his home, not a college dorm. As usually I ranted off topic. When I start talking, I can’t shut up.

Wow Dq, I agree with everything you say again. Why hasn’t Danny been fired? He’s never there! Is he on sick leave, paid leave, vacation, where is he? I’m just teasing, ladies, but his absence is really striking, and no one seems to comment or care. Maybe Danny’s working part time now. Steve’s home has been turned into a dorm. Why IS Junior still there? He earns a salary and could afford his own apartment now. Perhaps Steve loves the company, and Junior is his family now.

Not much happening in the romance department. We got the two first dates. Guess that’s it.

As for Danny – he also lives at Steve’s place and from what I have seen he will still be there for the valentines episode, for the regular McDanno shipper baiting episode of the season, I guess.

  14. Yeah in a sense it seems Quinn is likely if Scott decides to depart, could be the #2 over with Steve. Should the show the ratings being so great, go to season 11.
Really know the show is about McDanno though I love McGrover better. But really Quinn and Steve seem to click well. Both are military. And think a lot like. Imagine both of them having cararguments there?!
As they are showing less and less with Steve and Danny.
With Danny not there, as really it shows the rest of the ensemble getting their chance in the spotlight look at it that way.

I hate to say it but it doesn’t seem like there is a connection between the Steve and Danny characters anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if Scott decided to leave the show although it probably is a good paycheck and he seems to have a great deal. I wouldn’t mind seeing more Steve and Quinn, they make a good team and she respects him. Also Steve and Grover work well together too, if Scott Caan leaves it’s probably wouldn’t affect the show much, except for his fans. Just my opinion, don’t jump on me, lol. And I hope the show goes for a couple more seasons, I really enjoy it and I am a big fan of Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett.

The once powerful emotional connection between Steve and Danny is gone. They appear uncomfortable and awkward around each other now. They’ve grown apart over ten years. Steve tolerates Danny’s behavior because he loves him but Steve has moved on emotionally. How can they remain close when they no longer experience dangerous missions together? That was the core connection between the two characters–mutual survival, saving each other as they constantly faced death together. Now when Steve turns around to check his team before they start a new mission, Danny’s not there. I think Steve misses him. But life goes on and the two characters are now traveling different paths in their lives.

        Liked by 1 person

        • They are trying very hard to still show that connection. Danny moving in to support Steve after Doris died and Danny still living there. Even if he is not at work, he is WITH Steve.
They have been trying desperately to still have that connection. Even with the horrible liver transplant fiasco of a storyline. And then the terrible restaurant idea. All ways of trying to have a connection. But it is actually all in vain. It is just stupid and artificially trying to correct Danny’s absence from the main story of the teamwork.

I love the liver storyline. That episode is one of my top five favorite episodes of all ten years of the show. It’s deeply emotional for me. Danny fought like a tiger to save Steve’s life that day, first in successfully landing the plane (when he didn’t know how to fly) and then in giving Steve part of his liver. For me that episode is the ultimate expression of Danny’s love for Steve. And I thought Scott gave a great performance in that episode.

But everything since has been forced. The utterly inane restaurant idea which dragged on for an entire year drove me batty. I wanted to blow the place up. I agree with you, the show is trying desperately to show the connection between Steve and Danny when it doesn’t exist anymore. Danny’s just not there – physically or emotionally.

Steve is surrounded by a huge group of people who ARE there for him, and whom he loves. So, the show should start focusing upon them and their relationships to each other. Steve is Papa Bear and he loves his cubs. I love the scenes when Steve’s hosting dinners for his ohana. I love the the look of love and pride on his face as he surveys this group of people he’s assembled, taught, nurtured, protected, and crafted into a powerful unit who work together flawlessly as a team.

            • For me the show used something, as serious as a liver transplant, as a cheap plot device to somehow create an artificial connection between Steve & Danny.
I know the show has never been realistic about any medical condition. And I know it is not a reality show, but just fiction. We already saw it in the first season when had PDiddy running around Hawaii, hours after he had a serious abdominal operations, while also shot in the liver if I remember correctly.
But for me the show really went too far, by using something as serious as organ transplantation, which is very dear to Alex’s heart, and cheapen it into just some way to get emotional reaction and cheap laughs afterwards for a season or two.

          • Ah you had to remind me of this stupid liver storyline, over the top, unrealistic, and forced. And don’t remind me of the continuation starting with this stupid wheelchair race with Steve falling inmidst sharp objects and D cheering about it and then the complaining whining and bitching for episodes to come.
The only thing I took from this was that Steve has a lot of friends who sent him all the balloons and cards and gifts… and D happens to know these friends. 😉

And in his interview I think he made that very clear.
