#H50 9.10 – Steve´s big loss

So nice to see Alex work his magic with better material. All those emotions portrayed so well. Even with the cheesy sunset mountain background, I had tears in my eyes 😦 So sad to see Joe gone.

Alex o Loughlin’s acting cannot be touched by anybody ever. He looks so good with hair, and a jacket😊. SO sad to see Joe gone, I was crying for 10 minutes straight 😭. Loved the sentiment.

I am in total agreement with your sentiments. I hope Steve was paying very close attention to what Joe was telling him.

Where is the dialog between Jo and Steve you are referring too?

I am paraphrasing this. Steve found a picture of Joe with a beautiful young woman. He has a relationship with her and he seems happy but warns Steve that he (Joe) waited too long to find someone and does not want Steve to make the same mistake. In effect, he’s telling Steve to stop wasting time and find someone who makes him happy. People can draw their own conclusions as to what that means. I have my own belief.

        • I hate Rollins after her disgraceful behavior, but she’s really Steve’s great love. If there’s no S10, with only 14 epis to go,there’s no time for Steve to meet someone and give his bruised heart for good. So if this is the last season, a McRoll happy end is the only option.

I’m sorry you hate her. But could I just ask all of you to keep an open mind since many of us believe that she did not leave Steve willingly but had a reason she could not share with him. (Please re-watch the closing scene of Cath in a taxi leaving.)

All of this might have been avoided if Steve just gave her the ring. But he didn’t and that’s all on him. How was she to know he wanted to marry her if he never asked?

As for the argument that Steve could be trusted with knowledge of a classified mission, I agree with the word trusted. But he had no right to the knowledge and she would be wrong to share it without permission. I doubt Steve would have divulged a classified mission with anyone including her so he should have understood. If he didn’t, then I think he uses a double standard like many in our fandom.

And yes, it is apparent from all that PL has said about the character being there to the end, the mentions of her in episodes, and the fact that she returns, looks like McRoll is endgame.

And if Cath makes him happy, then I am happy. After all of the loss and heartbreak, Steve deserves his own family and happiness.

            Just my opinion.

            • Of course she could not tell him about her mission. But had she to come back for Kono’s wedding after she had broken his heart, when he was getting over the situation, knowing all the time she would go again? That’s what I hate. Yet if he can forgive her, all is well.

            • BTW, he did buy the ring shortly after she came back and was going to propose as soon as Nahele brought it. Only she was already about to leave when he arrived home. I remember the taxi scene. Why so many tears? She could have chosen to stay with him, but she chose her mission,

Steve asked her how long she was staying and her answer was to ask him how long do you want me to stay? He should have said forever. Every time they needed to have “the talk” both he and Cath knew the job always came first. That was the plan, but then the following happened…………….

When this episode was shot there had been no confirmation that there was going to be a season 6. PL brought her back at the end of E525 because it did not look good for renewal and he needed to give Steve his happily ever after. He also brought Rachel (E524) back to say she lied to Danny and Charlie was really his son and give that story it’s conclusion. (I amazed that no one “hates” Rachel. Her lie was much more serious since it affected not only Danny but Charlie, Grace and Stan as well.” But Rachel gets a pass…….because she is not Cath!)

PL’s plan has always been to bring Cath back right up to the end which is why I am a little worried about a S10 with AOL and SC. Story lines and loose ends are being tied up at an alarming rate. SC is hardly on screen even when he is in an episode and we see much less of AOL than ever before. We don’t know if they signed one year or multi-year contracts.

I wonder if Danny comes back from wherever and announces he and Rachel are together and that will be his ticket back to NJ and off the show. Lynn is thankfully gone but she was never a real threat to McRoll. PL told us that early on. She was a seat warmer—just a place holder. That leaves Steve alone so who does the EP bring back? It is Cath, whom he said will be there to the end.

PL has said many times that fans do not dictate the story. He has his plan and he decides where the journey goes.

Again, please see if you can keep an open mind while we watch this all play out. We’ll get some new clues in 911.

I really think with Alex being onscreen less, it’s time to think about ending the series, maybe hang on for a Season 10.
I’ve always thought Catherine was the best woman for Steve. They had real chemistry. If PL and his other writers hadn’t screwed up their relationship, and if Michelle hadn’t had this conflict with fans, they’d probably still be a couple.
Lenkov’s endgame all along may be for Steve and Catherine to end up together, by means of some grand mutual wake-up call. I believe Steve will heed Joe’s final words to him about not remaining alone. That sentence was purposeful.
Thanks Paula for the great photos. Alex looks gorgeous. He gave an
                  Emmy-worthy performance in this episode.

              • You’re right. She could have told him that she has to go, that it’s classified. He’s a grown up Navy SEAL, a freaking Naval Intelligence Officer, he would have understood. Instead she told him that HE is not enough, she hurt him exactly at that spot she knew he is the most vulnerable. Who does this with someone one loves?

Sorry to see Joe’s gone. I really liked the bond he and Steve had together. Let’s get Steve a girlfriend; he has lost enough people in his life. Excellent acting job by our man Alex!

This was a good episode. Great acting by Alex and Terry. I cried at the end. Terry O’Quinn was only in one episode of HF-O each season, lately. If it was Lenkov’s decision to kill Joe off, poo on him !!! Not a good idea. Not only has Steve lost a father figure, usually you could count on watching a decent episode when Joe White was in it.

    • I guess all major decisions regarding H50 are PL’s, and killing Joe is a major one. A pity. I’ve always thought the character was underused, so I agree it’s not a good idea. I can see that Alex’s performance will make me cry (one more time), so I’ll have my Kleenex box at hand.

I don’t know what the point of killing off Joe is either and I wasn’t the biggest fan of the character to begin with. It just seems kind of like they want to get rid of everybody from the earlier seasons. The episode just felt like an excuse to use a bunch of fire power and the CGI was so bad it was distracting.

So much loss for Steve. Now Joe….that’s the last straw!! Their relationship was boundless and I too cried when Steve was holding him knowing what was about to occur.

As far as a real love interest……long overdue!! Maybe he will take heed to what Joe said to him about finding someone. He definitely needs someone and she can’t come soon enough.

As far as the ep, my favorite so far. A good storyline, no ridiculous second storyline running with it, no Danno, just all based on Steve. I loved that! ❤ I would also like to say he looked gorgeous, in spite of the bruises. 😍

    I will definitely miss Joe.😔😔

  9. Alex is one heck of an actor and so is Terry O Quinn I knew Terry had other projects going in other seasons , so sad to see his character come to a close . I could not understand the horse ride if the helicopter was coming why not just send it to the house, I knew right when he mentioned that tree in the beginning of the episode that was where he was going to die, Thank goodness Steve has his 5 0 family to turn to, he will need them now more than ever

Alex was great in this episode! Wardrobe department gets 2 thumbs up. I’m super sad about Joe as that leaves Steve without his father figure/mentor. I’m really wanting Steve to get back on the horse again. Both literally as looks damn hot on a horse and figuratively to find a woman. We will see what the future holds for him. As alway thanks for the great pictures. You really captured the essence of Alex.

SO sad to see Joe go! Always enjoyed episodes that included him because he and Alex seemed to work so well together. I also knew it wasn’t a good sign when Joe mentioned that special tree early in the episode. 😦

But this was a fantastic episode, maybe even better than my all time favorite Ina Paha.
I hope the PTB have a little shrine somewhere to go to where they can celebrate the choice of having Alex O’Loughlin portraying McG.
Because he went through so many emotions, settings, feelings in this episode and he rocked them all. He made us feel and suffer and enjoy everyone of them.
Badass, shock, hurt, suffering, desperation, relieve, irony, fun (his exit from the interrogation room with Greer was glorious) and utter sadness.
I had all this in my heart for a long time. Still have. Perfection.

  15. I can’t get this episode out of my mind. IMO one of the best of the series. I love when an episode is Steve centric and when you add Joe White you know it’s going to be good. Alex is such a talented but underrated actor. He doesn’t even need words to make you feel. The man speaks with his eyes! I hate that they killed off Joe who was such a rich character and had such a special connection to Steve. I hope we can still see him in flashbacks. I hope the impact of Joe’s death on Steve doesn’t end with getting revenge. I want to watch him as he grieves and grows from this. I hope he realizes that there is more to life than a job and that he deserves love and happiness. Being a McRoll fan, I hope he finds it with Cath. The possibilities are endless but I’m not sure they’ll go there. There’s so much more to Steve than just solving the case of the week. I will never tire of watching Alex on my screen and I’m so thankful that I can come here to enjoy his deliciousness with all your screen shots. Thank you!

I think Steve will avenge Joe’s death but the trauma of this particular loss will have to play out over time. The show has never death with how Steve is effected by all of his personal tragedies or let us see how he copes. Each week we see him bloodied and bruised but the following week his scars, both the ones we can see and the ones he keeps hidden, are gone and it is as though nothing significant happened to him. Maybe this time the writers will let us see how he deals with this which is why I believe it was important to have Cath return in 911. She and Doris are the only two women he has ever loved and this just seems to be the progression of bringing her back to a future McRoll reunion which may happen later this year. It won’t be in this episode since Steve is still processing Joe’s advice but it will be on his mind. Lynn will no doubt come up but the simple answer is probably that they broke up because he wanted to keep things casual and she did not. Cannot blame her for throwing in the towel.

With Rachel’s return and lots of time spent looking at colleges for Grace on the mainland, it appears that Danchel is on the ascendancy
and McDanno is circling the drain. There may be no Danno in S10.
But if AOL is happy with the concessions he got on his S9 contract, then we will probably see him return. I will be satisfied with that.

To answer the abC’s lingering question of why PL keeps bring Cath back, it is simple. He wants to, it was always his plan and he calls the shots. Just him. Not the fans, not the cast. not you, not me, just him.

We are a very small fan base, split between the McDanno’s, the abC’s, the McRolls and the I don’t care either way faction. For everyone who hates Cath, there are many of us who love her. We all need to face the reality that the people who really matter are the 8 million ones who watch on Friday night, don’t know any of us or that these fan sites exist and like Cath just fine. For any of us to think that our opinion can influence the direction of the show and cause PL to give in to pressure to change his vision for his story and his characters is delusional.

      • MamaYorkie very well said…I just hope PL agrees with what we are hoping to happen. This is the perfect opportunity for the show to step it up and have some character driven stories. Let us see Steve deal with his struggles instead of just moving on to business as usual. I can live with less of Alex on screen if he is given substance and material to shine. Those are the episodes I remember and re-watch.
