#H50 8.03 – Steve´s crush

Last week we witnessed McEddie being born, last night we saw the man crush between Steve and Harry 😛 and the continued McDanno queerbaiting :/

This queer-baiting has got to stop.I’m beginning to believe that PL is trying to ruin Alexs career for after the show ends. Alex has way too much testosterone to be given these story lines Enough is enough already. It’s alright to show his sensitive side, but that shirt logo was way over the line. It’s begining to ruin the show for me.

The shirt was nothing but pandering to that fanbase so why do it? Do they really think that’s what the majority of viewers are McDannos? It’s just stupid and so is the whole restaurant story.
The rest of this one was meh. Harry is an interesting character and deserves a better episode, but he did get the best line of the show about the restaurant’s eventual liquidation. Also, Tani’s shoes were so over the top stupid that Steve should fire her on the spot!

I agree with you about the shoes. Good thing she didn’t have to run through a burning forest. Another example of pre-adolescent boys running the show.

    • I have seen that in episodes they are using a lot of things that fans complain about over the years.
For many years fans complain about the boots Kono and Cath used to wear in the warm heat of Hawaii – fact is that they are practical in the line of work where you need to run and fight. Also we had a lot to say about Gaby’s high heels – this way the show is answering us about it all.
Same with everybody complaining about everybody joining the task froce without proper training – now Junior needs to train.
There are a few other things that I have picked up as well – maybe will do a post about it, if I see more during the season.
I also think Harry should get something more – he and Alex play so well together. There is a natural ease between them (Alex and Chris) that entertains me.

Steve is gorgeous as always. You know someone has said it before and I agree with them when they said PL doesn’t care and he’s going to do what he’s going to do. That’s his prerogative. My only problem with the queerbaiting is that if that’s not the direction you’re going in don’t bother showing or teasing with it. I don’t find it amusing to tease any of the fanbases. We all know that CBS is not going to let their superhuman male lead be gay. I don’t think Alex and Scott would have a problem playing it due to being open-minded actors that would probably love pushing creative network television boundaries, but it ain’t going to happen. I was surprised by Tani’s shoes, but at the same time I was happy that she was in a sleeved buttoned up blouse instead of a tank t-shirt or a shirt with the arms cut down to the waist with a sport bra underneath. I’ll at least give her credit for that. Kono’s attire was getting ridiculous and I thought she was just there for window dressing like all the other women. I’m sure Tani’s attire will eventually change too. I love Chris Vance so I was happy to see him in any capacity on my television.

When Chris Vance came out of the water he looked very much like Daniel Craig in his first 007 movie. A not too subtle dig at AOL because he didn’t get the James Bond role? Last week it was the reference to Mick. Now this? Mean spirited sense of humor.

I didn’t see it as a dig at Alex not getting the James Bond role. Too obscure a connection, IMO. Right away, I thought of Steve’s swim scene in the blue trunks, from Season 1. No comparison. Nobody does it better than Alex !! A Greek god, rising from the ocean.

You’re right about the blue swimsuit. No comparison. Alex owns them! But, I think Alex owns every scene that he’s in. I still think the British guy looked too much like Daniel Craig coming out of the surf in “Skyfall”. I loved the daisy duke remark. Too funny.

I had the same flashback to mcg in blue swim trunks; although I think both guys emerge from the ocean quite well!
I love all alex faces. He does every expression so well and subtley.
Those Tani shoes were awful. High heels are bad enough but open toed… at a crime scene? The forensic scientist in me still wants to scream!

  8. This episode was painful to watch on so many levels.
Thank you AOL for making your scenes watchable because of your ability to modulate and ‘work’ with your voice, for not overacting and for your various facial expressions. And thank you Paula for giving us these perfect gifs.
Sorry but the MI6 guy gave me nothing, no layers, no dimension, I didn’t see his soul, heart or at least a motive for his actions.
Steve should reconsider being a business partner to Dannoying, who insults him, decides without him and doesn’t see or care that this restaurant is not Steve’s dream. And it is pretty obvious that the guy who made a mess of Steve’s house while trying to make a frittata for just two persons is nobody who should run a restaurant.
Loved Steve’s line: Hey D, is that the colour of the booths?
And I want to unsee the Lady and the Tramp shirt. I am not 12, it is not funny, it is queerbaiting, but maybe I have no sense of humour. Tell me again McDs, I can take it. Because I take an airlifted cabin over this every day.
Steve wins every shirt-off contest hands down by a mile (lol I wrote short-off at first, but maybe that too…).
I am sooooo looking forward to next fridays episode! Looks really great!

The restaurant gig is getting old really fast. Please don’t drag this out the entire season? Either set up the restaurant and RUN it, or drop the idea? How can those two guys afford the lease on that building anyway? Ugh on the T-shirt, too. I love Chris Vance, but they gave him no story line at all this time. MI6 needs to reactivate him and then the three amigos can take off on another international journey to catch the bad guys and save the world. I really liked that episode. lol, I love everybody all dressed up in suits and tuxedos. YUM!

Alex is so subtle and his incredible variety of facial expressions are priceless. I loved Steve’s reaction to the T-shirt: “You’ve got to be kidding!” “Ah, I don’t think so.” Maybe, “Thanks for the idea, but……”

This was an OK episode for me. It felt like a filler episode, just to get to next week. Not really great writing for this one, 5-0 staff writers.

And the helicopter lifting the house….I read on a twitter site that one faithful Five-0 fan went online to research the helicopter. Seems that the one they used in the episode IS a large, very powerful model capable of lifting and moving houses!! It’s actually used to do that. Another poster said that she was in the woods one time and actually saw a helicopter doing just that, lol! Amazing, the writers got something right and no one believed them.

I’m looking forward to more Eddie next week!

Do we know why Alex shaved his head? Story line related? Has to be. I hope Steve’s not getting sick from radiation poisoning. I don’t like his hair that short. Alex has gorgeous hair. Want to see a little of it at least! Been getting shorter every year. Maybe Steve’s gonna go undercover again in a secret mission.

it seems that his new look will appear first in the same episode that Danny gets injured and has “scroogelike” dreams. I have wondered if it is for a ghost of Christmas past flash? However, they will have to come up with a reason for the new look in the present. Danny made fun of it last time, so it isn’t like he would let it go this time. Of course, last time, the growing back out I think could have been done better, but I’m not Steve or Alex, so whatever he wants to do, more power to him. He used to keep it short on hiatus anyway.

Eddie was introduced in Episode 3 which was shown last week. The episodes were reversed because it was too soon after the Las Vegas massacre. The killer in Fridays’. episode had a huge arsenal of weapons, like the Las Vegas shooter.

        • In September on my “site update” post you asked me this question:
“I’m curious about one thing. Can you be more specific about the direction of the show that you don’t like? I’m not picking up on anything radically different than what’s been happening over the past several years. Or are you just sick of it?
Well, this t-shirt together with the whole ridiculous restaurant storyline and some other stuff that I have seen that is still to come, together with some of the innuendos from last season, which I had a lot to say about in my reviews – THOSE are the things I don’t like!
And as you can see, I did not even bother to write any thoughts about this episode and I will most probably not write anything about any of the shipper-baiting episodes that are about to come either …….
I know you still like and enjoy the friendship between Steve and Danny – I used to like it as well and wrote many very positive post about it in the early days, but all these things happening; together with the superiority complexes and the entitled and rude attitudes of many the McDanno-shippers towards basically everybody else in the fandom in the last few seasons, ruined it all for me!
I will focus on the things I like – Alex and his Steve and the many other wonderful and positive relationships he’s got in the show.
Grover, Eddie etc ….together with Steve – those are much more fun and entertaining to watch for me, than all the forced innuendo created with transplants and business ventures destined to annoy and fail from the start ……

I just realized that I quite enjoy watching the show with the volume off. I like watching Alex without having to pay attention to the crime of the week at all. That shows just how poorly written the show has become.

Truly unbelievable. Who would waste good money on them? At first I thought it was a joke. I missed the t-shirt in the beginning while watching the ending of another show on demand. Still I can’t believe they are selling them.

The only reason I too watch the show anymore is to see Alex. The whole idea of a restaurant with Steve and Danny being partners is totally off the wall. I can see only Danny doing it and making the biggest mistake of his life. The writers should keep the team of Grover and McGarret more in the storylines. They play off each other so well. I’m confused about the hair discussion because I really didn’t notice anything except it being more closely cut. If in future episodes he gets a buzz-like cut, I hope they don’t dye his hair so dark as they did several seasons ago. I’d like to see his gray grow in. Doesn’t look so bad on George Clooney. And I hope Eddie is in more episodes. That dog makes a great companion for Steve.

Sometime in the future, Steve’s hair will be a lot shorter, a real buzz cut close to the scalp. There are videos of him at the jujitsu school which show how short it is. I don’t like it. Love Steve with more hair.

I saw the video also at the jujitsu school but thought it was during hiatus. I like longer hair also but am hoping, the powers that be at H5O let the hair grow in without touching up. Just have to wait and see if the higher-ups come to their senses.

I think too much of a big deal is being made about the whole restaurant thing, the bickering thing and the T-shirt thing here, come to think of it. So I’ll share my thoughts about both, hopefully I’ll offer another way of looking at things that won’t upset anybody. Now, just for the sake of it, I have only seen up to episode 8.07 of the new season so I know nothing about anything that happens after that.

The restaurant: We all know that the restaurant was originally Danny’s thing from his list of what he thinks he wants for his future after Five-0. It was never Steve’s dream or his idea of a future to begin with. All Steve asked was that Danny name it “Steve’s” so that “…If we’re not together, we’ll still be together….” during their dirty bomb in the jungle moment. My personal take-away from that scene was that comment was Steve’s way of telling Danny how important their friendship is to him and wanting Danny to remember him/still carry Steve with him each day if the worst happened and Steve gets himself killed doing something stupidly, impressively heroic. My reaction was: Awwww, Steve’s a big sentimental softie on the inside and that despite how they rag on each other a lot, there is obviously also a lot of respect, brotherly love and appreciation between Steve & Danny. They have a solid friendship/brotherhood, because they are more like brothers than friends. Steve’s not doing the restaurant for himself; Steve gets that it’s Danny’s dream. For Steve, I think it’s more about a legacy of their friendship and another example of Steve showing Danny that he supports him in what he does, than anything else. Sure, he gives his input but I feel like he’s less interested in the decisions and the fixings/fittings of the premises than what it means about their friendship, their legacy and their intended future plans. I do like that they have this restaurant together, something outside of Five-0 that is them continuing to build on their friendship. Will it go bust? Who knows, but I do think they needed something outside of their jobs that tied them together. Think symbolism.

The “bickering”: Yes, Steve & Danny push each other’s buttons on purpose and I think kinda enjoy doing it – you can see mischief twinkle in one or both of their eyes during each exchange. They push each other, in a lot of ways including verbally and mostly they don’t take it personally/negatively. If one of them was truly offended about something the other said, there’d be a noticeable conversation about it. You’d have to make sure the air was clear given that you are each other’s back-up in life & death situations almost daily. I don’t believe any of the jibes are said in a nasty way, for example the broken toys comment in an earlier season from Danny. A lot took that as nastiness but the teasing tone it was said with and the small, soft smile Danny had when he said it, wasn’t one of nastiness. When I watched that scene, heard that comment then the camera pans to show the gang around a table at Kamekona’s, what I saw was this: Each person there all had a problem, something they were stuck or struggling with very much alone before they met Steve. Steve not only helped them through it but he bought them all together and gave them the family/support/love they never had before. He “fixes” people, often people who didn’t realize they were broken in the first place (just like Steve doesn’t realize he’s broken himself!). I like to think that Danny’s broken toys comment was him recognizing what Steve had done for each of them and kinda saying “Hey, what you did for these people – you did good”. That scene gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Yes, Danny is at times somewhat over-dramatic when he’s yelling but it’s usually because he’s worried/scared. (Stargate Atlantis fans can draw the comparison of Steve & Danny’s friendship with that of Lt. Colonel John Sheppard & Dr. Rodney McKay – they hated each other at first but became friends, still with a lot of snark, put downs and a lot of yelling on McKay’s part when he was scared – but when one needed the other, they were there in spades). I also think Danny saw very quickly from the start just how closed off, lone-wolf-like and unnecessarily dangerous Steve was in the first month/years of their friendship, following nothing but Military life starting at Steve’s most critical time for emotional growth – his teenage years. When Steve should have had the love & support of a family to allow him to develop emotionally and become a balanced man. Sadly Steve had no family around him in such important years, all he had was Annapolis, then the Navy & the SEALs – which is not exactly a balanced and emotionally nurturing environment. I think Danny saw all that & decided to try to do something about Steve’s mammal to mammal interactions. So yes, Danny’s spent years trying to drum it into Steve that he doesn’t have to lone-wolf it anymore, that he’s not expendable and that he needs to be more human, more open about how he feels or what he’s thinking. Is Danny’s WAY of going about it a good one? Sometimes yes, sometimes no but he’s trying to help at least. If you think about it, they do balance each other out. One’s too in-your-face with his every thought/feeling, too loud, too pushy, too much. The other is (still after all these years) too locked down, too quiet/non-communicative, too stubborn to ask for help. Despite their very different personalities, their friendship/brotherhood has had noticeable effects on each of them individually over the seasons. They’ve helped each other grow, they’re important to each other, regardless of how much they rag on each other. Some people have friendships where they rag on each other all the time and it doesn’t mean anything, I know people like that, I have a friendship like that myself and we never stop laughing at ourselves and each other. Who knows why that works in some friendships and not others. I adore Danny, because I totally understand where his head is at most of the time. I see a lot of myself in him, Steve is my favorite because I get him equally as much. I guess it kinda gives me an insight into Steve & Danny’s friendship. (I totally love analyzing people, the way they think, how they act & interact. I’m such a people-watcher in life, so it easily extends to fictional characters for me. People fascinate me. (Yes – I probably need to get a life, but until then I’ll keep psycho-analyzing characters lol). It doesn’t hurt that Alex is a sinfully sexy man who makes Steve super-sexy-hot, and that’s before the kevlar comes out!!

The T-Shirt: Show created that for one reason: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. They know all the different kinds of McDanno fans would buy it (regardless of whether it’s Steve/Danny as friends, partners, brothers, lovers). It’s easy money and that’s ALL there is to it – the $$$$$. If they made one in my huge size I’d buy one, purely because I love the friendship between Steve & Danny. Not because I think they’re getting naked & sweaty in the back of Danny’s Camaro every chance they get. There are many different types of people in this world, different people see different things in others. Where some see a friendship, others see a brotherhood, others see love. No one person’s interpretation of Steve & Danny’s relationship is more right or wrong than anyone else’s. It’s all opinions/interpretations. TV shows need their characters to be relate-able to as many different types of people as possible in order to be successful and bring in the $$$$. Trouble is, you can’t please everyone. Show tries (and sometimes fails) to appeal to all fandoms with selective editing on teasers, a comment here and there by a character or an EP/writer, most recently a T-shirt that could be interpreted in several different ways. It’s called playing it safe. Does playing it safe like this make good TV? Not always. Remember: the Tee isn’t about pleasing fans at all – it’s about lining pockets with as much $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ as possible until Show gets cancelled. A Tee, a mug, a button, a coaster or keyring is an easy way & cheap way to do that. If you don’t like it, don’t buy one and don’t dance all over other people’s choice to buy one/like it if it appeals to them. It’s not necessary.

McDanno/alleged queerbaiting: It doesn’t bother me that other fans out there BELIEVE Steve & Danny ARE getting naked & sweaty together. Each to their own, and I see no reason to keep calling this queerbaiting. It’s just Show trying to hook as many viewers as possible, if it was specifically about attracting more gay viewers, Show would have a regular or main gay couple in it, right? Let’s stop the constant complaining about the fact that some see Steve & Danny as lovers and others hate it because they may see their relationship as something else. So what if some people DO see them as lovers? It doesn’t physically hurt anyone to let other people enjoy their own interpretations, so leave others to their fantasy. Just ignore the parts of Show or parts of fandom that don’t subscribe to your interpretation (that’s what I do!). Isn’t TV supposed to be escapism? Fun? Where no one judges anyone else’s interpretations? Cuz there’s enough of that shit in the real world. How about we all take what we like from Show, accept that everyone sees things differently, just concentrate on the good and ignore what we don’t like. I know what you’re going to say – No, Steve & Danny as lovers is not ‘cannon’ and therefore people in the McDanno fandom are ‘imagining things’ etc etc. Here’s the thing, Show CAN’T possibly cater to every fan’s idea of what SHOULD be. That’s why people set up fan sites dedicated to their favorite show/characters/pairings; to enjoy their interpretation and share it & discuss it with others who share that interpretation. That’s also what fanfiction is for – to make up for the things that Show won’t show and the places that Show won’t go with their characters/stories. Some of it (for example from the McDanno as lovers fandom) sometimes gets shared into mainstream fandom, it can’t be helped but that doesn’t mean that every single time one sees a post about it, one has to get their knickers in a twist calling queerbaiting, saying they’re imagining things blah blah blah and basically saying they should shut up. No one person’s interpretation is more real or right because we’re talking about fictional characters. By definition they’re not real, silly!

Me personally, I can see all sides of Steve & Danny’s relationship – there are parts that can be interpreted in multiple ways. I enjoy reading McDanno fanfiction when I can’t settle at night because there’s something going round and round in my head and I can’t stop worrying about it, or when my insomnia is bad, or when I feel sad etc. I don’t just read McDanno (as lovers), I read a lot of different kinds of Steve & Danny-centric stories because I love the interaction between the 2 characters and I have discovered I enjoy reading stories with many different interpretations as well as my own. Would I like to see Steve & Danny get together in the Show? I don’t know – I’d have to see it to decide whether or not I’d like it or feel it works. I tend to reserve judgement until I’ve actually seen something rather than write things off based solely on the idea of it. I doubt Steve & Danny will ever be together as cannon in Show, but I don’t have a problem with any part of the fan community that would like to see it happen or that believes it’s already happening in some way, shape or form. I just think there’s too much negativity in the world in general and that some of the things we humans get all up in arms about is silly. Let’s share the fun stuff and leave out the stuff that’s not to our liking instead of letting it get to us.

….and if anyone knows how *I* can get naked & sweaty with Steve in the back of Danny’s Camaro, let me know! Why should Danny have all the fun ROFL!! 😉
