They say … #AlexOLoughlin is very very sweet

“He’s not only attractive, but he’s very, very sweet.

He’s a very genuine, kind, really nice guy.

I really like Alex.

We kind of have this cool rapport.”

My Thoughts

  • One of the female characters and part or Steve’s story that got left behind and never really featured.
  • Lost opportunity for Steve and Alex to have a better story?
  • I guess we are starting a theme here – ‘The lost relationships of Steve McGarrett’, and of him having a real personal life or story on the show? We all know that the Steve and Cath story got messed up and that the Steve and Doris story REALLY got lost somewhere after Season 3. And then a while back I talked about the Steve and Chin relationship that were never really explored fully. Earlier this week we talked about the Steve and Grover relationship that got lost after Season 4. We also posted an article that came from halfway thought the first season, where you can see that Alex became frustrated with the lack of story and depth for Steve. In the article where this quote comes from, we also see Mary/Taryn who never really got a chance after she was dropped/deleted from the pilot ….. are there any other relationship characters that you can think of who would have given Alex some great material to work with and who would have created more meat around the character of Steve?

I really liked Ellie as a friend for Steve. She was fun, called him on his BS and generally appeared to be laid back. A strong female lead. She also tied into the story of Steve’s dad. A real shame that she was never given a real chance to be a part of Steve’s story long term.

Mamo also got left behind. He could have been a good anchor for Steve in dealing with the past.

    I’m agree..Ellie was perfect for a new story..I was disappointed for her exit …Also I liked Lory♡

Lory could have had potential – but the writers messed that up pretty quickly. 😦

Nahele. We could have had some great stories with Nahele’s father being jealous of Steve’s relationship with Nahele and causing problems.

I want Steve to adopt Nahele. Steve arrested his dad after Nahele told Steve about the murder he heard his father commit when he was a child in the back seat of his dad’s car. His dad went away for life that time. I love this relationship–Steve is a loving, protective, nurturing and encouraging father figure to Nahele.

Nahele’s a young adult now. Steve can still adopt him to give him a real ohana. Right now he’s all alone. I don’t remember if there were any other family members who took him in.

Adopt Hahele? How old is he supposed to be? The actor playing him looks like he’s at least 18 years old. Where is he living now? Not on the streets I hope.

The character should be about 18 which is around the age of the actor. We last saw him in the hospital room with the whole crew in the Season Six finale. I love the character and the actor, so for me, this would give Steve his OWN true ohana, since we never see his sister or his niece anymore. I’d love to see Steve as a father.

There’s always room for true love for Steve and I profoundly wish that for him. In the meantime, while he’s waiting around FOREVER for that magical love to appear (or reappear) he’d have a real family member of his own who’s actually present in his life. He’s got a huge, sweet, loving heart and he makes a great dad. I can see the two of them bonding over that old car, surfing, or just hanging out as father and son. Steve deeply loves Nahele. And that love is mutual.

Yes, and they worked through all that. Nahele was starving and on the street. He needed help. So he committed a crime. All was forgiven by Steve once he understood the hardships Nahele faced. That’s why he took him under his wing and mentored him, cared about him, watched out for him, and acted like a surrogate dad.

I think no matter how old you are it’s nice to know that there is someone in the world who loves you and wants you. I think Nahele looks up to him and it would give him some family. They did something like this on Major Crimes. If any of you haven’t seen it, the kid was selling himself on the street because his mother and her drug addict boyfriend abandoned him in L.A. He witnessed a murder and the next few years the police captain fostered him. After he was an adult she wanted to adopt him and make her part of her family and he accepted. He still had his birth mother that eventually returned, but he also had a stable home and refers to the captain as his mom.

My hope would be for Nahele to show Steve his acceptance letter from Annapolis. What greater compliment could Nahele pay to Steve than wanting to follow in his mentor’s footsteps? But I doubt the writers will do this. They probably know more about the location of Kamekona’s shrimp truck than the U.S. Naval Academy.

We never got to know his best friend Freddie. More fIashbacks to the trauma they endured as SEAL’s could explain McG’s PTSD. Danno has never really understood him the way Freddie did. Maybe that is why the two of them are always bickering. The close bond of that kind of military combat and shared experiences is just not there. Even Joe White understands him better.

I vote for Freddie. He was the one Steve should have been talking to in the Chapel in 701, not the fake Jack Lord (may he RIP after that one. )

    • Oh I would love some after PTSD nightmares hear about some memories of Freddie, or his SEAL days. They have a SEAL at their hands and do nothing about it, instead we are getting the next William’s family member. Or Hirsh. Or Adam digging for bones.

When he was forced to leave his best friend Freddie, who was dying, to complete their secret mission, Steve was never the same again. As he told Grover, after that, he didn’t want to be a SEAL anymore. The death of his best friend emotionally crushed him. I agree, wish we could see more flashbacks of Freddie and Steve.

  5. The show messed up any and every of Steve’s relationships.
    Every single one. Even McLiver.
That’s the reason I flinch everytime people – imho – overtax the expression ‘ohana’. Everyone of his friends, everyone of his team and ex-team has an ohana that does *not* include Steve McGarrett. Steve has none of this.
So I want him to be loved. Really loved. The sooner the better. I would love if it would be a new character. A new woman in his life. Damn, this whole island has to be full of woman who remember Steve from his quarterback times. Or met him on his daily run. Or watched him swimming (no private beaches on Hawaii), or saw him drinking bulletproof coffee at his diner of choice, or saw him buying a new set of cargo pants, or boardshorts, or the trillionth blue shirt.
    GOSH.
    Give our Steve happiness.

Leica I’m with you!!! My thoughts were also why the hell can’t there be someone truly endeared to Steve? The writers have destroyed all those that he loved and cared about.

As far as his new girlfriend I am not feeling her at all!! I hope they do bring on a stronger love interest for him. Someone who can love him intensely!! Ummm I relish the thought!!💕💕He so desperately needs real, true love in his life.

Steve told Alicia Brown S7E17 that he likes his alone time! I understand that but damn that’s pretty much all he has!! Hanging out with the H50 ohana is fine but seriously!!!! He should be spending some alone time with that special love in his life. Bring it on S8 and get rid of his illness!!!!

By the way, I LOVE Commander McGarrett in uniform!!! How gorgeous is he in his naval dress?😍😍 OMG!!!!❤❤

My opinion is that when the series ends, Cath will turn out to be the right woman. ***Since PL says that she will be there to the end of the series, that McRoll is not dead and these are just stories he is telling along the way, it seems to me that this is the direction he is going.
(*** these are his comments from interviews, not my opinions). As for Sarah Carter’s character, her scenes with McG had zero chemistry probably because they are old friends and it was like kissing your sister. Now that IS my personal opinion.

And since PL has said that Lynn is not in Steve’s future and Ellie was just a buddy, (also his comments, not mine) there are very few options unless he brings in a totally new character for which the abC’s light candles.

But it just looks to me (my opinion) that from everything he has said in “quotes” which have not been “interpreted” for us by a reporter or misinterpreted by some “true fans” who bombard PL with their tweets to fit their bias against the actress in a poorly reasoned, poorly written blog, that does not seem to be his intention from either his words or past actions.

So, in my very humble opinion: McEllie is McFinished; McLynn is McDead, McBrown was a nonstarter, and McDanno never was.

Cath being the right woman for him makes me want to throw up in my mouth a little. All can think of is that old song “I want a gal, just like the gal that married dear old Dad.” Who would want a deceitful bitch like that for our Steve. He deserves better .Does anybody remember the scene on the plane when she admitted to him that she came for Konos wedding (and one last goodby screw) and lied to him? She is just like his mother. dq, you are so blunt and to the point. You remind me of my friend Nancy and Carol. I’m the complete opposite, which is why they are my friends. I think that’s why I laugh sometimes when I read your post. You just speak your thoughts and you write how you speak. I wouldn’t put it quite as strongly as you did, but I get where you’re coming from. I think the problem with the people in Steve’s life is that they don’t have the heart to look him in the eye and be truthful, for fear of seeing how hurt he is so they avoid him. Essentially, in not telling the truth through avoidance they abandon him. Unfortunately, the dishonesty and abandonment are his two underlying issues and every time this happens it reinforces these insecurities. It’s just my personal feeling that until he can deal with these issues he’s not good for anyone on a long-term basis. He’s got problems!

Agree Steve needs a new girlfriend, cuz as much as I love Sarah Carter as an actress – in scenes with Steve & her character Lynn, I honestly feel like I’m watching paint dry. There’s just no chemistry there for me. With a man that looks like he does, he should be having a love life that sizzles.

And/or some meaningful connection(s) outside of the team, he has no one that isn’t work-related, that actually sticks around. Including his own family – but then they do say you can’t choose your family! He definitely needs something/someone else in his life to help ground him.

The reason I liked Lynn was that she was not a co-worker. Can’t see him with a fellow employee. Not with him being the boss. Any “favors” he would want from her would not put her job in jeopardy. I suspect that some of the favors Catherine did for him could have gotten her court marshaled. Joe White was forced into retirement after the North Korea rescue.I also agree, why is a man that looks like that not beating women off with a stick? Except for the trip to Maui we have never even seen a hint of any women giving him a second glance. How is that possible?

That’s been a constant – frustration at the lack of depth for … anything.

How about Joe White? Here is someone who became a major part of Steve’s later teen years and his military life. His substitute father figure. But, as things go with this show, they never developed that, had Joe evade every question thrown at him until he just… disappeared.

What about ANY other SEAL brothers Steve had? We had the Bad Guy from season1, and since then…. nothing. (Other than Freddie)

My vote is to see more of Steve’s relationship with Nahele and Joe. Kind of like a Grandfather, Father and Son threesome going on. Why can’t we see the three of them going to the firing range together or meeting at the shrimp truck for dinner?

I do hope Terry Quinn makes another appearance soon. I love that character. Has Jerry every met Joe yet? I can’t remember. I don’t recall Jerry spatting out one of his conspiracy theories with Joe in the room.

    Has Lou met him yet?

I think I’m all about the Steve and Joe relationship right now because last night I watched “Kiʻilua” (Deceiver) again. At the end, I love that it’s Joe who pulls Steve into the helicopter, places him on the floor ‘between’ his legs… there are a few shots of Joe’s hands on Steve’s shoulders. That is such a fatherly thing to do.

Maybe Joe is Steve’s biological father. Suppose she was pregnant when she married John but she thought Joe died on some secret SEAL mission and his good friend John married her to give her child a home. John sent Steve to his Uncle Joe when he sent him off the island. Joe always seems to know where Doris is and how to contact her.

OK, I haven’t forgiven John for keeping track of Ellie for all those years but admitting to Chin that he had not been in contact with Steve or Mary.

Mary didn’t get that messed up by herself.
My imagination is running wild and I am galloping after it as fast as I can.

Then we have Steve White and no longer Steve McGarrett – does not workf for me or the mytholoy of the storie at all 😦

Agree 100% with the Mary thing – John failed his kids. I have written a lot on the fact that I think he is the most patheric character in the show. No for who he was or what he stood for, but for what he did to his kids.

And if ever that was true, it would be the worst anybody has ever done to Steve – even the physical torture by Wo Fat and Mommy Dearest Doris’s actions thus far, would not be worst than that. To lie to somebody about who they really are, touches their core as a human being.

McG has a real family, including a sister and niece, and a mom. These characters should be more included in Show. They have blown this since S1. To Show’s detriment.

And yes, leiCa, I have also bitched since S1 at the lack of any McG ex-girlfriends and football buddies. How can Show never once think to dredge up a friend from his past? They gave Chin a damn HS reunion! Why not the frikkin star? They’ve *boringly* kidnapped McG how many Times? But NO ONE from his childhood still lives in Hawaii? Doubling down on the unbelievable, and the ZzzZzz x2!!!

Any and all of these possible SLs, those all y’all mentioned, are way more interesting than another stooooooopid cargument, housegument, boatgument, CharleyRoomgument, or restaurantgument! And Danno is the LEAST decent character in his life, at least now that WoFat is dead. No one would put up with him, much less a navy SEAL who was known as SmoothDog…and why we never got the Intel on THAT?????

This show took a wonderful character with soooooo many SL possibilities and reduced his SLs to nothing but a tough guy who survives any torture or bodily shock or disease, saves everybody every day, then goes home alone with the whining tones of a self absorbed ass probably ringing in his ears…and mine. 🙄

Oh, Grace, I love your comment. Yes, you’re right, Steve has a family but they are not available. At the end of the day, after he saved the world the umpteenth time not because he’s reckless or on a suicide mission but because he knows what he can do, knows his abilities and knows his job and what comes with it, there is no family waiting for him. D has Charlie and Grace, Lou Renee and the kids, Kono had Adam, Chin had Sara and Steve? A MIA sister and a MIA mother, who doesn’t deserve to be called Mom.
And I absolutey love your last lines and ITA. Thank you for voicing your displeasure (and my) of a character in such a funny and snarky way. Seems that not everybody is capable of that.
BTW, do you think TPTB read the whole lot of comments about their ‘not love’ from the non twitter and the not insta crowd?
I’ve seen pics of Steve and Lou and that makes me squee. And I don’t care that hubby says my squee scares the dog. She can hide behind a wall of silence. I’ve been told it’s a common behavior dealing with ‘loved ones’.

I want to add about real family and people from before ….
Is Doris an orphan? Is there no family frm her side? No Grandparents, Uncles and Aunts, cousins for Steve? … Just nothing there?
I would have liked to know more about grandma McGarrett as well. Did she raise 2 kids (John and Deb) alone after grandpa Steve died. Did she never re-marry? Why did John and Doris decide to live in Hawaii and raise a family there?
Steve is very well liked wherever he goes, and he knows how to throw Ohana parties. What about his old Ohana (Navy-buddies) – there must have been others and not just Freddie and Cath and Bullfrog.
And what happened to friendships like Odell and Alicia and autistic boy etc … just nothing?
AND I miss the relationship of Steve and the Gov – any Gov. Just show more of that dynamic of actually running a taskforce for that person …..

  13. The lack of storyline of personal life of Steve McGarrett always irked me since the beginning, but especially since season 5. The writers always wasted time with recurring and guest characters and forget the storyline of the main one. Steve McGarrett doesn’t deserve, it’s a very complex character and the writing department could develop the layers of the military man, the leader of special police force, the child who was forced to grew up early away from his family, the PTSD, the dificulty of trust in others, even the reconnection with the island and traditions, etc. But most of all Alex, with his talent, hard work and dedication, should have more character development with realistic stories. I know it’s a procedural show but is a drama, not a comical cartonish show. The executive producer said to the actors and fans that new H50 would be a procedural show with character development. But i’m very disapointed about the way of these 168 episodes were writen and so many interesting storylines were abandoned over theses years. And i guess Alex is not happy with the Steve’s storyline either.
So please give him a personal life with the small family he has, old friends from the Navy, from high school, new friends outside H50, but also love and the possibility of forming a family.
I know no man is an island and they have to have supporting characters, but no one can deny that Steve McGarrett is the main character and the best episodes of all 7 seasons are about him.

“not a comical cartonish show” I agree, but with all the silly characters (Hirsch, Jerry, Danny’s nephew, Sang Min) somebody must think it is a comedy! Get rid of the “broken toys” aka the loser brigade!

I vote for a new girlfriend for Steve. Lynn is such a non-entity that I don’t even know how they can write her out in any kind of plausible way and the Cath storyline got old 2 seasons ago. I want to see a cute flirty Steve enjoying the chase a little! I’d also like for Mary and Joan to come back. Where are they anyway? We don’t even know where they live or what kind of work Mary is doing! Does anybody know why they cut that scene with Mary at the funeral from the pilot? I thought their conversation there was more realistic than the Mary story (she missed John’s funeral) that made it into the later episode.

I know somewhere that there is and article or interview explaining a bit about it – will search for it. Think it might have been comments on Season 1 DVD – not sure.

I also think that CBS might have thought that to have a junkie sister for the main character would be a bit much. Not sure if they had a problem with the actress (Taryn) or the character, but I definitely think it was pressure from above that made Peter change that story.

I never thought Mary was supposed to be a junkie. I know Steve accused her of being high at the funeral, but I thought she was just supposed to be sort of “troubled”. Anyway, I like that scene that they cut because it showed that they had some kind of relationship since they left the island. The “haven’t seen of talked to each other since 1992” was stupid. Why would they be angry at each other? They should have been united in their anger at their parents.

Excellent post Marta13s!! You really nailed it on so many levels!!! I hope the producers and writers step up to the plate and do a better job with storylines. I hope that will include giving Steve McGarrett’s character more depth and enjoyment in his personal life!!!

It would be nice in the final season if Steve’s sister would decide that she wants to raise her daughter in Hawaii near her Uncle Steve since they are the only two that have each other. Maybe then Steve might stop and think for a millisecond before he does one of his many suicide missions, knowing that there are at least two people that would like to see him come home at night. Don’t know where mom is. Guess she’s nursing her guilty wounds for systematically destroying her entire family. At this point apologize profusely ask for forgiveness and try to rebuild something with your kids. It will never be the same, but at least try. I guess she’ll go off and die with Wo-Fat’s dad. Hopefully someone will alert Steve and Mary where they can find her body.

“She’ll go off and die with WoFats dad” . So, I’m not the only one that picked up on that. After Steve’s sit down with Mr. Fat Sr., Steve told Danny that he said he had never stopped loving her (Doris). She risks life and limb and of course deception to find his wherabouts and try to free him. He says he thought he would ever see her again. Makes me wonder what kind of relationship they had when she was assigned to kill him. Do we even know what his crime was to deserve death? Of course the end result was, he lived, his wife was killed instead, and Doris took his child to raise. This “child” went on to sanction her husbands death and on many occasions almost kill her actual son. Remember, WoFat has always known who Steve was. Steve never knew the level of resentment that WoFat had for him. And on such a personal level. Thank goodness WoFat never got his hands on Mary. I hope Doris never comes back. There is nothing….nothing that can excuse her behavior.

      >>>”At this point apologize profusely ask for forgiveness and try to rebuild something with your kids”.>>>>

Some Mothers just don’t have it in them to have that “I’m sorry, please forgive me” conversation, nor to even try to make an effort to rebuild anything. I’ve unfortunately got experience in this one. It destroys something in you that you can’t ever get back – that whole ‘don’t you even care enough to try?’ thing. That mistrust/abandonment it leaves you with does translate over to other areas of your life. Especially if you try to ask questions or somehow start the conversation and all they do is shut it down. So I totally get why Steve has been so emotionally locked down for so long. It’s a hard habit to work your way out of. It would be nice if he does find himself free of that one day and having close, meaningful personal relationships in his day to day life instead of always being a lone wolf.

I won’t deny you have to be pretty selfish to conclude the living parent will make everything alright for the kids so it’s okay to fake blowing myself up in a car explosion.
Yeah it’s kind of sad. Mary’s screwed up but kind of moved on and has her own child to focus on. Steve is just kind of on his own so has no problem with doing things that might get him killed since he doesn’t think he’s leaving anyone behind that needs him. There are some toxic parents that you have to cut loose sometimes. I’ve met their messed up adult children and I’ve advised if they can do it that might be best.

  15. I think that Elle could have been a love interest. When she wasn’t, they could have had a deeper friendship with their father commonalities and their similar interests in the present.

More character development with Grace. They talk more in fandom than canon

    • Yes, Ellie’s job and her personal relationship with John, could have been great stories for Steve to build on.
See no reason why he needs to have a relationship with Grace. She is not really anything of him, other than a work colleagues’ daughter. Nothing there to really enhance his story as a person. She has got a mother and a overprotective father, AND a stepdad and a boyfriend and his dad (Lou) etc. I would have found it a bit creepy if my dad’s colleagues paid too much attention to me when I was a teenager #justsaying

Steve’s loved Grace from the moment he first met her at the football game early in Season One. Steve brought her to Danny when he was ill in the hospital, comforted her when Danny was extradited to Columbia, taught her her how to jog to win a race and rescued her and Danny when they were held hostage at the school dance. He’s told Danny repeatedly how great a kid she is.

Steve admires how much Danny loves his kids. Steve loves Danny’s kids as if they were his own. Steve enjoys spending time with Danny’s kids. Loving Grace and Charlie allows us to see how great Steve would be as a dad.

My mom’s office colleagues at Pan American Airlines were my friends, too. They were a great group of people who worked well together, cared about one another and were genuine friends. They cared about me and I remember them all fondly for how much they loved my mom. They were all really cool people, and I enjoyed their company and their caring.

When Danny had that ‘run in’ with the bomb he wanted Steve take cover so Steve could take care of Grace.

          • Yes, that is true. But also very sentimental with a lot of McDanno shipper service there.
The fact remains that Grace would not have been an orphan. She’s got a mother and stepfather and a whole lot of real family (also Danny’s family)
In essence, Steve is nothing of her, other than her dad’s colleague and friend. She is not part of his personal story – she is part of Danny’s story.

        • Yes, Steve was there for Grace when Danny was in trouble and when she needed help with training, but other than that, she is not really part of Steve’s personal story. If danny is not there, she is nothing of Steve – she is just Danny’s kid with her own real family. She is not an orphan who needs Steve.

    • Agree with you Magnólia
The writing is not very inspirational as far as personal stories go. The personal stories does not have to be front and centre and take over the action of the show. It just can be incorporated as better part of it
For some reason the writers think that they have to make everybody on the show Five-0 members to validate ther existence on the show. (They did it with Cath and with Grover and Jerry) I am afraid that they will now try to do the same with Duke and Adam – put him on the team rather than at HPD.

  17. I just wish that they would bring a story line that let’s us see the real scope of Alex’s acting .He can convey so much with just his eyes and let that snarky fun side of him out. I would love to see a whole episode of just him narrating the story like he did in Moonlight, He is an amazing actor and I would love to see more of him conveying emotions instead of jumping of a bus etc.

  18. Totally agree.
I think the show could have had both the actionman and the subtle good acting. Moonlight showed that he could do both very well together. But somehow the show decided that cartoonish artificial fun was the way to go.

Hm… cartoonish artificial fun. PL is somewhat known for writing comic books. That might be where some of the silliness comes from. That and the pre-adolescent maturity level of the writers. Some of the story lines and stunts seem to be more suited to a comic book. Sad really.

I like the idea of Alex narrating an episode from McG’s point of view. That could be interesting, depending on the story-line of that ep. At least it might be a bit different from the usual.

    • I think that’s a terrific idea!
Maybe he could do it in the episode he’ll direct and can’t be before the camera that much? I think someone has to tweet this idea to the writers and PL. They’ll never have such a great idea all on their own. 😉

Funny thing is I hate narrated tv shows, Burn Notice comes to mind. However, I would gladly listen to him narrate the entire episode. It’s a shame we couldn’t hear it with the real accent.
