Fractured Five-0 tackles tension in season four.

BEFORE he gained a loyal fan base as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-0, a remake of the 1968 TV series, Aussie actor Alex O’Loughlin sparked curiosity as Jennifer Lopez’s love interest in the rom-com, The Back-Up Plan.
I’m not sure if it was his smouldering good looks, that chiselled six-pack or the enchanting smile that endeared him, or if it was simply his acting ability. Either way, viewers haven’t been able to get enough of the lanky Adonis. Four seasons later, he remains a tour de force in the modern re-imagining of Hawaii Five-O.
Tonight’s episode is a minefield of explosive drama – a lot of it centred on his mother, Doris.
O’Loughlin says: “When you look at the reality of the situation, I mean, anybody in the real world whose mother faked her own death and disappeared for 20 years, reappeared, and then did it again … like disappeared again and sort of cut all contact … it would ruin someone. It would absolutely, emotionally ruin someone.
And the aftermath of that would be something very tangible and something we – I certainly hope – explore for my character. I think it could lead into some interesting PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).”
After chasing Wo Fat for ages, new information comes to light that has Steve reeling in shock.
The actor says: “I think the death of his father started a great fury in him. I think those successions of deaths that happened with his best friend in North Korea and then his dad as he was coming back, you know, it started something in him he can’t sort of put out. And there has always been one thing after another that fuelled his passion since the very beginning in the pilot.”
O’Loughlin hints that his character’s past demons do surface every so often, especially with him being thrust into a volatile climate daily.
One of the curve balls Steve didn’t expect was Kono choosing Adam over her job last season.
As for his character’s thoughts on their relationship, he says: “For Steve, it’s been a real concern, but it’s also been a hindrance. He is such a pragmatist. It’s like Kono is married to the mob. He doesn’t like Adam Noshimuri. If Adam got shot tomorrow, he would be like: ‘Okay, good riddance to bad rubbish.’”
One of the welcome additions to the cast was Michelle Borth as Lieutenant Catherine Rollins. Sexy, intelligent and no push-over, she was the perfect match for Steve. And viewers revelled in their blossoming screen romance.
On working with Borth, he praises: “Michelle is a great girl and a great actor. She’s very switched on and does all her homework. We are both very prepared, which is great and crucial in TV because it means you can actually get into the work.
“You have such a tiny bracket of time to play with a scene before you actually shoot it. She is always prepared, so we get to take the scene further and give it more shades of colour.”
Interestingly enough, the dynamics in their relationship change with Catherine working with the team now. The tension is definitely going to give rise to a few heated stand-offs between the two.
Peter Lenkov, the show’s executive producer, says: “We always make an effort in the beginning of the season to really come out of the gate, beat our chests and sort of announce that we are back to do something with a lot of stakes and a lot of energy and action. Then we slow ourselves down and start telling more personal stories, more character stories.
“Probably one of the biggest things we dealt with in the season three finale was Kono leaving. That’s going to really affect the beginning of season four.
A big drawcard as far as guests go this season is Carol Burnett: “We are really excited about Carol Burnett. She plays Aunt Deb, the aunt Mary went to live with when their mother supposedly died. And she has a great role. She sings and does everything you expect from Carol Burnett. But the thing she does that’s so good is the dramatic stuff.”
Staying true to its high-octane roots, the fourth instalment of Hawaii Five-0 is laden with character-driven storytelling interwoven with traditional whodunit crime-solving. The crimes are varied, mind boggling and engaging – feeding into the team spirit of the specialist unit.
My Thoughts
- All I can say – once again so much potential for good storytelling on Hawaii Five-0, clearly dropped and lost way back then in the beginning and during Season 4.
- Alex’s words here in the article – “I certainly hope”, makes me so sad, because clearly that hope for some great character stuff for Steve did not come to life. And the little bit that was there, landed on the editing room floor and could only be seen by those who bought the DVD. 😦
- All we got from the whole Doris and Cath story was a rescue of Daddy Fat four seasons later and some more CIA bullshit with no real character story for Steve coming from it other than finding an old diary from Doris with no explanation to the viewers of what is really in there …..
- From this article and from some others that we have posted over the years about Hawaii Five-0, it is clear that the actors see the depth of the characters that they play and know who they really are (or could be) so clearly, just to be disappointed by being given a curveball by the writers with something totally different, trivial and inconsequential ……
- For me this was a very refreshing article from way back then at the end of my favourite season (3), and at the start of Season 4 with such great expectation – written by somebody who certainly understood where the story was at back then. And written by somebody who was clearly not influenced by warmongering fans with a vendetta, or other ass-kissing fans on social media back then, like most of the thrill-seeking articles are influenced now.

Alex O´Loughlin ~ An Intense Study 
OMG!! Show coulda been sooooooo good! For a minute, it was. Alex was so excited still, about what it could be. Now he’s all jaded, we’ve had 3 unsatisfying years of bizarre, periodic, totally OOC moments, and most of us are just watching for our lanky Adonis instead of really caring about the whole. Sigh.

Yes, we sometimes get a glimpse of Alex being jaded, but he still brings his 100%. Just a few scenes during this last season, it seemed that more of Alex rather than Steve was there. Mostly scenes that we supposedly there for some ‘fun’ ….. or maybe fan service. (Not sure how to put it)

All of those potential storylines he listed would have been AMAZING to see played out. Given his history with Adam, he should have been pissed about Kono choosing Adam! They should have left in the scene about Steve going to the group therapy class for PTSD!
Another interesting thing is that the writer of the article said that Catherine joining 5-0 would lead to some heated stand offs between her and McG. I’m not sure where the writer got that from, I think I recall Peter Lenkov saying something vaguely similar in an SOTB interview maybe? Either way.. THAT would’ve also been great to see. Maybe that landed on the cutting room floor too – it would-be explained the weird disconnect that happened between the characters in the middle of the season.

YES. It is indeed because of his acting abilities because they elevate the character McG, enhance how he is written and make him multi-dimensional.
And YES. He is the task force in the show.
Damn, Alex has such a good grip on the man Steve McGarrett. He knows him. He owns him. (Lol to what the EP said…) So many lost possibilities and reasoned consequences and aftermath. There was no need for all this constructed over the top drama with liverloverradiationcoverfailure.
But yeah show. As Kimphin once said: Give us more Hirsch.

Really so sad that so many of the Steve storylines just apparently became to difficult to write.
Much easier to write some stories for secondary characters, I guess.
Much easier to make forced connections of liver-sharing vs genuine connections real friendship.
Much easier to write some forced “comedy” vs real easy flowing fun and funny stuff that comes naturally ….

I agree. That story of breaking DaddyFat out of CIA prison was so stupid and so unSteve like. I hate that episode! And it should have been a good one!
I’m glad they didn’t go with the “circle group” thing in season 4. I do think there should be some emotional follow up to some of the things Steve’s been through, but some random circle group is not something Steve would do.

I agree with you on both accounts. Working for the CIA and breaking into the CIA and still working for the CIA, does not make sense to me …
And the group therapywould also have been inadequated and maybe better dropped. A PTSD storyline should have spanned a number of episodes and played out through some cases as well where Steve might have found it hard to do the job properly because of it – but I guess that would have taken some special skills of knowledge of human behaviour to write. Not something that most of the writers on the show, show much skill in to do.

I agree with your thoughts on this article 100%! With the Catherine thing, I believe the disconnect between the characters of Catherine and Steve had a lot to do with something that happened off camera. To me, it seems like the two actors don’t like each other and really don’t care to be around each other. I don’t know if it was Michelle Borth’s Twitter war with fans that turned Alex off, or if it was something else, but it’s obvious that he can’t stand her now.

I think we have not really seen much or any real footage of Alex and Michelle BTS lately, to make any such observations of “can’t stand her now” . It is more like wishes and rumours fueled by Michelle Borth haters, than any proof of that to be true.

I don’t know where you are getting that he can’t stand her – other that from the vitriol being spewed by some people who don’t want to see her back.
He’s never been anything but complimentary of Michelle – and she of him. I tend to believe words out of the actors mouths, not the soothsaying of desperate fangirls.

Sorry I had to add this. Maybe I shouldn’t. I hope it doesn’t offend anyone and I’m sorry it’s so long.
I always loved the character of Catherine because she was an independent woman and could take care of herself. She didn’t need a man to define her. She was tough. When she first left she was a single American woman traveling in the Middle East by herself. That’s gutsy! Of course, she was recruited by the CIA, it would have been a waste of her talent not to recruit her. I’ve always seen the character of Catherine as a career woman working her way up the ladder and breaking the glass ceiling. I hate that they started them out as a couple. I would love it if they brought Catherine back, just not to be Steve’s significant other, but for most this will not do. I would love it if since we last saw her she’s been promoted within the CIA.
As for MB, I don’t know her and I was not involved in social media at that time. I read an article where she was interviewed and I can understand how she got caught up. In her defense, she owned a home in LA. They gave her a contract as a recurring character. She did not have a set schedule like the core 4, but she had to be available always, so she moved to Hawaii. She said there were times she’d film a couple of scenes and be off for the rest of the week or she could work non-stop the entire week. She never knew what her schedule would be like. At first, she kept busy by taking surf lessons, sightseeing, going to the park and things like that. She said she enjoyed reading and writing, but at the time of the interview it was towards the end of the filming season and she said she was basically just sitting around watching Netflix. This is a woman that was in her early to mid-thirties of course she got bored. Some of her fans get angry about them not bringing her back full-time, but as one poster said has anyone asked MB what she wants. She gave up a lot to move to Hawaii by herself, perhaps, she is the reason the character comes and goes. She might not want to be tethered to Hawaii on a long-term basis. I know social media got ugly, but I believe everybody deserves a second chance. Maybe on another show so that she can shake off the bad karma of social media and have a fresh start, maybe even new fans.

I don’t agree with you about the character (didn’t like her from season 2 on), but I totally agree about the actress. This idea that she got fired over something she said on twitter makes no sense. If that were true, they would have killed off the character and there’s no way they would bring her back. I believe she left because she wanted to. For all we know, she may have gotten a better offer for a movie or TV show that never materialized. I think her exit in season 4 was hastily written and that’s why they are struggling to figure out what to do with her. Is she Doris part 2 or is she Steve’s true love being “forced” to lie to him for his own “protection?” I know what I think, but I have a feeling that the end of the Steve and Cath story is going to be sort of ambiguous.

If I had the time or the energy or the will, I could tell you the whole story in detail with some insider knowledge as well. I was online nearly 24/7 each day at that time because of personal circumstance – saw the whole thing playing out in great detail, and it was a trainwreck. I even had brief personal contact with Michelle as well.
It is a real sad case of a celebrity and fans thinking that they could be friends with one another. Biggest mistake Michelle ever made.
It does not work!
She was very open and trusting. Befriended many people in the fandom, with direct contact, e-mail and on twitter – most of those people turned against her in the end and are now Michelle’s biggest haters and the most verbal against Cath on social media.
Unfortunately Michelle made enemies of some very devious people in the fandom who started out by taunting her and after she defended herself they went after her in full force. It turned something that could have been great they into a total disaster. She just could not help herself but engage them again and again, and everything went from bad to worst ….
In short – she did not leave because she wanted to or because she had something better to do.

Ouch, FOYeur, clearly you know the real story. Sad. Sigh. I stay away from social media like the plague. Alex and Scott are smart to not go anywhere near it. Some actors have a gift for being clever and witty on Twitter. Michael Weatherly is absolutely awesome. But, when actors get unwittingly caught up in “couples” battles on TV shows, the warring fan factions are lethal. As an observer, it’s just crazy. I’ve posted on several actor’s websites during the past 16-17 years and have witnessed up close all the insanity that sometimes ensues. I read other sites and just watch as people basically destroy one another for fun and pleasure, it seems.
This sad episode appears to have had a negative effect on Michelle’s career. She doesn’t seem to be doing a lot of other work.

Yes, those who suffered through this whole ordeal were clearly Michelle and here career. Together with those who loved her and her character on the show. She was clearly one of the strongest and best female characters on the show (if not the only one). Really adding some value to the overall story …. right up untill the writers suddenly did not know how to handle her exit at that time and the last episodes she still had to do on the show in season 4.

To answer your question, she was not fired. She had a two year contract which ended at the end of Season 4. Grace Park was slated to return after maternity leave. as I have previously said.
The network does not involve themselves in this type of things because it involves civil rights. As far as the twitter comments go, I am not familiar with all the laws or protections of other nations but our American Constitution has a first amendment right to free speech which protects all of us, including Michelle. The Network attorneys will certainly advise against doing a hard shoe jig on that right. It was considered so important by the Framers that when the first Ten Amendments were added to our Constitution, immediately after adoption, that particular protection was made part of number one.
The writers have no power to fire anybody. The Showrunner has brought her back for five episodes since then and has said she will be in the series until it ends. Does that sound like he doesn’t want her?
I guess it is more fun for some “fans” to make up stories and spread rumors than to stick to the truth. I hope I managed to explain things and answered your question.

Not to get too political here, but this has nothing to do with the first amendment. The right of free speech only protects a person from criminal prosecution. There are no constitutional guarantees to a job. People get fired for things they say all the time and thanks to the internet it’s more common than ever. CBS fired Charlie Sheen for the things he said about Chuck Lorre and they fired Jennifer Esposito for stuff she said about Les Moonves. For the record, I’m not slamming the actress. I don’t know anything about her and I’ve never seen her in anything else. When I said I thought she left of her own accord, I was sort of defending her. The only reason I even care about any of this is because the way her exit was written in season 4 was weird.

You have a point! It’s CBS and like I previously stated I’ve seen it written that they have some strict practices. I keep thinking about Thomas Gibson on Criminal Minds. He was the lead, although he had other infractions, they didn’t hesitate to get rid of him. Now they’ve gotten rid of his replacement and brought on another actor for this coming season. They also just got rid of the actress that plays Kevin James wife on Kevin Can Wait to go in a new direction after only 1 season. However, since they do bring Michelle back sometimes, it may have been more of her decision to resign and get away from all of the drama, with an option to bring her back or finish out any contractual obligations. I have noticed that she’s only in a few scenes and not for very long, but they do have a very large cast and they were doing that before she left the show.

This was not a political comment. It was a Constitutional one with a narrow reference to the First Amendment protection of free speech with reference to a specific Twitter account and the rights provided to all citizens. It has nothing to do with a job guarantee.
Like the actress or not, she is entitled to the same rights as the rest of us. She did not identify by name any of those posters who called her unprintable names on twitter, nor did she criticize the network, the show or the producer. Had she done any of those things she would not have been brought back. But she WAS brought back five more times and will likely appear again. Based on that alone, it should be apparent that neither CBS nor the EP has a problem with the actress or inviting her back. That is logic.
As far as PL’s intentions, it is his show, his right and his responsibility to do as he sees fit.

I don’t think you understand my point. I’ve said all along that I doubted that she was let go for anything she said on the internet or anywhere else! Maybe I’m wrong. I don’t know, that’s why I asked. You’re defending her when I haven’t even accused her of anything. And none of this has anything to do with anybody’s constitutional rights.

I did get your point. Mine was that she was not fired. It has nothing to do with a defense of Michelle. You do not have to be prosecuted to need the protection of the First Amendment. You need only to suffer the consequences of retaliation for free speech. The Supreme Court has a very broad interpretation of what constitutes freedom of expression. Even that which is truly offensive to a vast majority is protected by law. She did not suffer those consequences because she was not fired. Her contract ended. And that is why I said it was a Constitutional civil rights matter and that the Network would not involve itself.
I wish she had not engaged and that she had de-activated her account but it was her account and her right to continue to use it and respond as she wished. She was not terminated for cause as in the other examples cited above. Her contract merely ended after two years, yet people continue to use the word fired in reference to her use of her Twitter account. I cite the First Amendment merely to explain why that reasoning is faulty. You did ask who fired her. The answer is nobody.

There is a difference between firing somebody and not renewing a contract. Firing her would have meant not using her for the rest of Season 4 at that time.
The actors on the show work from contract to contract, from season to season with the network. The main cast would have longer and more secure contracts I presume. But anybody on the show is just there on a more permanent basis because of a contract. Some will have a contract for a few episodes – (like Joe White and Doris for example – they are there for their story.)
It is in fact as Mamayorkie said – her contract was up and not renewed, BUT it was NOT because she did not want it to be renewed. She was actually in total shock about it (I can even give you the date of when it happened). The decision was a one way decision. That is not the same as being fired or not wanting the be there anymore. And it is also not the same as never appearing on the show again. It was not a ban I guess – it was just not a renewal of something permanent and ongoing
I think Michelle thought that the network would protect her against the harassment. But I gather they chose not to get involved with such childish nonsense as a twitter war. They asked her not to engage – she did not listened.
Unfortunatley Michelle was the only one out in the open – she is a known public figure with a job – those who harrased her were anonymous nobodies who bombarded the network with complaints about her.
She should have treated them as such – NOBODIES. They had nothing to lose but some twitter personas – she had it all to lose. And in the end they devided and concured. They told her that those harrassing her were actually some of her friends – she did not know who to trust anymore and everybody became the enemy in her eyes – also those who wanted to help her was now her enemies because of that. In the end she allienated them all and they became her and her character’s fierced opponents. They were once her ‘friends’ and they all played right into the hands of those who harassed her, because she started scolding them directly, while trying to figure out who was real friends and who not. As most people would, they all took it badly. It bruised their egos that she did not want to take advice or trust them. This got ugly and bizarre, and paranoia was at the order of the day
People have freedom of speech, but they have to be able to take the consequences of it – unfortunately the only one suffering the consequences of it all, was the one who had everything to lose ..
The others just have bruised egos and their permamently and corporately fueled hatred of her (and her character) left. Nothing affecting their real lives of livelihood.
It is all truly sad!

Another big point to make here is that these NOBODIES also stalked and contacted MICHELLE’S FAMILY – which is incredibly disgusting and wrong. I think that is when she really got riled – and in my opinion, is when TPTB and CBS should have stepped in (in fact, she did have lawyers looking into cyber stalking actions, but nothing came of it)
So, for those of us who actually lived it, there is a much different tone than people who go and read about it after the fact. Do I wish Michelle hadn’t reacted? Absolutely – but given the over the top actions of the few that were involved, I can see how she reacted the way she did.

Thanks for your account of the situation. I kind of figured as much. I’ve read that in the industry CBS has some of the strictest policies when you work for them whether you are an entertainer, corporate employee, or behind the scenes. Unfortunately, it also happened at a time when she was closer to 40 than 30. Age alone in “Hollywierd” makes a difference in the U.S. It annoys me to watch television from other countries that have age appropriate actresses that look around their age and still look good. Here you must continue to look youthful and have a girlish figure. It’s not fair to some of the actresses and unless you have achieved Meryl Streep status, you struggle to find roles. Her roles before 5-0 only showcased a little of her acting range, because they were geared to the hot youthful look. She did Indie films, guest spots, and had a few 1 season shows that showed a little variety of acting skills. She had one come out in 2016 called Teenage Cocktail and it’s pretty good. She plays the mother of a teenager. I liked that it was a totally different character and that she was back doing Indies. I love Indies!
In my research, there seems to be enough blame to go around with EVERYONE! I kept reading & thinking, “M you’ll never ever meet these people in real life. Please ignore them.” For every 7-8 fans, she had there was only a couple of haters that instigated the negativity. Unfortunately for her it didn’t help that at least 1-2 of her real fans were not on the same wave length and took the defending to a whole new level, instead of encouraging her to ignore the posts that started attacking the negative posters, which egged them & others on. However, as I posted earlier she was off on an island isolated. That’s a big deal when you’ve spent 12 years in LA and have built a life for yourself. You lose your readily available circle of friends and support system that you spend time with.
Last gripe. I have no idea what PL’s plans are and I truly hope he’s not just teasing to generate show attention. I don’t appreciate the little Instagram and Twitter post’s that he sends that instigates the past between fans and haters, that will NEVER go away. Every time this happens it associates her with the negativity and probably affects her ability to find work. That’s not fair to her and I hope she is okay with it. I feel like she’s being used to promote his show whether he uses her character or not. Now she’s in a position where she almost has to go along with PL because it’s harder to find work. Therefore, I’m hoping she finds work & moves from all the bad karma this show has brought her.

Let me rephrase and shorten my previous replies.
In response to your remark – She was not fired, but her contract as regular cast was not renewed beyond Season 4, althought she thought that it would be.
And it was not done over something spesific that was said on twitter. But her contract as season regular would most probably have been renewed beyond Season 4 if she did manage to restain herself and did not try to defend herself to those harassing her on twitter, in a process of unfortunate events that stretched over many many months on social media.

There has been absolutely no evidence of any conflict between Michelle and Alex. None at all. Alex has made no such statements. The only comment he made in the November 2016 interview was that he thought that McGarrett would be a fool to take Catherine back since she had left him twice and didn’t need her permission to move on. He was referring to a make believe character, Cath, and not Michelle. It became obvious that he did not know what the future scripts would be and the EP made two things overtly clear with his response to Alex’s interview. #1. McRoll was not dead and #2. the character Lynn, played by his good friend Sarah Carter who had recently been let go from her own show, had no future with McGarrett and therefore no recurring part as a love interest or work thrown her way.
Nothing happened off camera and the sudden exit of Michelle had to do with her two year contract ending and the return of Grace from maternity leave, as well as the reluctance of the writers to marry this couple off before the series ends. That is why things started to get a little strange toward the end of S4. Otherwise, they would remove the “will they or won’t they” element from show and watch ratings plummet the way they did in Castle and more famously, Moonlighting. If Cath will be there to the end of the series as PL has stated on more than one occasion, then that relationship is canon.
Whatever you have read is a fabrication of a very small vocal segment of the fandom who have great difficulty accepting that McGarrett would willingly be with any other woman than themselves. Fantasy is a wonderful thing except when it becomes an alternate reality for some in the fandom, who think he is real. He’s not cheating on you, fangirls. He doesn’t know YOU are alive because HE is not alive. Why do I feel as though I just told them about Santa?
I am sorry you had to be exposed to such mean spirited nonsense and I hope this clears up some misconceptions. Danny is acceptable to them since he is not a real possibility. Unfortunately when some in the fandom are a little loose with the truth, it gets repeated as though it were gospel. I am not calling them liars, but if their size 13 combat boots fit, then……….they should wear them.

I agree with you. I get the feeling McRoll is not dead, which is okay with me. H50 is fluff, and that is okay with me also. I don’t know what goes on with the social media haters. I don’t read it. Just hoping H50 will have a decent ending. In the past, the series finales for a lot of shows I watched were head scratchers, and not good. I can only cross my fingers.

Love this article and yet it makes me sad & angry. Such a “misuse” of Alex/Steve, so much wasted opportunities to make it a memorable show.

Alex could have done so much more with good material to work with. It seems like they try to do the bare minimal script that will appease a multitude of viewers on a Friday night. It’s okay with me because it offers simple escapism at the end of a stressful week, but I know he’s capable of much more.
I would have loved to see a PTSD storyline or him truly recovering from an organ transplant. His five minutes of reflection with creepy original Steve did not amuse me.
I’m annoyed that they even bothered to do the Steve’s mother’s alive and used to be a spy storyline, but I love Christine Lahti, so I’ll let it pass. I’m not sure what happened with the Catherine storyline. I’m late to the party by a few years, but thank goodness for Google, I know what happened on social media. Sadly, this drama will never end. I know this by some of the blogs and posts I read from the fans and haters. For those like me that were on the fence about the Cath/Steve relationship the way PL has allowed her character to be written has left a sour taste in my mouth for them being a couple.

Well let’s see what kind of storyline presents itself for S8! Will Steve be suffering from radiation sickness and which female or females will be by his side??? Not only that but exposure to radiation is very serious with extremely serious side effects which can prove fatal! So where will this lead???☹ I dread the thought!!😭

Don’t worry. They’ll find a way to decontaminate him early in S8, and he being a SEAL, he won’t suffer from any pychological effects.
