The Steve McGarrett Story – No # 168 (Epi 7:25)

Okay, so this one is easy to sum up. Three months ago Steve got exposed while dismantling a dirty bomb and now he is radioactive. And we will spend the next season discovering into which superhero he is morphing, or if he will stay human and just die painfully and slowly.

Last week we got Spiderman, this week was either Batman or Superman – I am  not entirely sure yet. And on top of that since the incident, he has been thrown off a roof by an exploding bomb, got shot, been beaten to a pulp and showed little scars or permanent injuries for any of them – so there is also Wolverine in the pipeline I guess.

I imagine Season 8 will be a never-ending joyride to discover who Steve really is now. Maybe we will circle right back to the “beginning” and discover that he is still  just only Mick St John working undercover, as I predicted 5 years ago.

Some of you that have been following my Steve posts will be expecting my next move. Yes, of course I will have to do a short little timeline (And of course an account for the changing of clothes ) of this episode. It is just begging for it – Because I guess after 7 years of the show, they have yet to appoint somebody who can keep track of times and dates and do general mathematics. Or get an editor that have any knowledge of geography.

First the timeline of history that brought us here to things happening in this episode, because weirdly enough there was no previously on for everything that happens in this finale ….. (and all those old stories they picked up from past episodes confused me a bit)

  • They should have also shown us Steve wearing a battery around his neck to protect himself when defusing the nuclear bomb, just to make sure we know what it is about, because we might have forgotten. And as I said earlier, that happened around 3 months ago (Epi 7:18) already.
  • Then about 2 months ago (Epi 7:19), the team discovered a sex trafficking ring, and we mostly thought they caught the whole group in Hawaii. There was no indication that there was more connected to it or that they needed a follow-up.
  • Then a month ago (Epi 7:21)  Steve (with Danny who weirdly came along) visited the doctor and Steve was for all intents and purposed given a clean bill of health. Even the Dr was amazed when Danny even mentioned something about radiation exposure. So clearly there were no signs of any sort of problems 2 months after nuclear exposure. (Can it stay hidden for so long?)
  • Also, already a month ago (Epi 7:21), Jerry got a Five-0 badge. (Party only now?)
  • Then 2 weeks ago, Steve had to babysit Charlie, because Danny was making confessions to a Coma Man.

(If you have watched the episode, you might guess why I am a bit confused with all of the above incorporated into this episode. I will leave it at that and not even try to explain)

Then we reach the timeline for this episode: (and the confusion keeps coming)

  • Around 15h43 yesterday afternoon (that is 14 hours before 6:43): Danny walks into the office with Charlie. Steve walks in with a present for Danny and Danny says Steve is never generous. And then Steve also offer to give the hungry Charlie junk food from the vending machine.

Koala Smartass: Nothing weird or OOC about any of that, is there? LOL

  • For some reason it seems that Steve is still expected to see the Doctor every month, because they discuss the visit and the fact that the liver is still fine.

Weirdly Steve points to his left side when he talks about his liver – so I guess we were all wrong last year. Steve’s liver is indeed on his left side after all.

Koala Smartass: I was also giggling a bit because Alex seems to forget on which side his liver is supposed to be.

  • I guess it is also yesterday afternoon when Kono shops with Sara, while Abby and Chin catches an afternoon quicky. Why Kono is doing the shopping for a party that will be at Steve’s (that is Steve’s house and not Danny’s restaurant called Steve’s), is kind of weird. But then again she is the woman on the team, so I guess it is her job to shop for the team.

Koala Smartass: Are you implying that the show keeps women in their place (Barefoot and pregnant and catering for the needs of the men only? )

BTW, If anybody only watched the first and the last episodes of the season, they would probably think that Abby has been here and part of the show the whole season …..

  • But then Kono changed clothes and ‘rushed’ over to the North Shore while it is still light ….. and she was still wearing those same clothes the next morning – must have worked straight through the night to get all the detail on this Deon guy .. Or maybe she went to see girl early the next morning – VERY early. But that can not be, because it would have been dark and everybody there would still be sleeping if she was there before 6am ….

Koala Smartass: Not only confusing yourself now – but EVERYBODY.

  • And I guess Steve and Danny must have been staying at the office all night for some reason, because they are still wearing the same clothes as yesterday when Charlie was there, when Kono calls them to the magic table and they discuss the case and rush away to do the raid ….. (And also Charlie is now gone and must have left in a hurry without all his toys)

Koala Smartass: LOL

  • Just to put things into perspective of why I am confused – Sunrise in Honolulu this time of year is around 5:54am. The girl loaded on the truck at 5:43 while it is dark outside – 10 minutes before sunrise?. But also very light at the office if the team is briefed by Kono at around the same time.

Koala Smartass: And ….. nobody but you care if it is already light before sunrise. Maybe the editor or director has never seen the sunrise? You know Hollywood and all …

:gogo:

  • Also the whole team all get to work pretty early in the mornings it seems. They are doing the raid at 6:29, so I guess the briefing they had was around 6 am, most probably earlier. Maybe they all just sleep at the office now – like Jerry. THAT would explain a lot.

Koala Smartass: Early bird catches the worm I guess? And you know Hawaii Five-0 cast and crew start work that early – guess they think that is what we all do.

  • Then suddenly, everybody on the raid, and Jerry at the office included, are now wearing different clothes. Did they all go back to their houses for a quick shower before they continued their raid? Or did they have HPD close down the perimeter for the night and is only now doing the raid the next morning? But then HPD would have seen the truck leave …….?

Koala Smartass: You do know only you seem to care …..

Sad smiley 141

  • AND I have to mention this very important question here:

Steve: Looks like they left in a hurry.

Grover:  But how did they even know we were coming?

I guess that is still unanswered at the end of the day (episode)? And we surely will never know and it will be one of those unanswered questions at the end of the show. Another mole in HPD?

Koala Smartass: Maybe we will get the answer in the season opener of MacGyver? You never know. #sarcasm

Indifferent smiley 23

  • Not sure why Duke had to scream to Abby to get out of the way? Is she blind or to dumb to see the truck is speeding towards her?

Koala Smartass: Maybe all the Chin loving has made her head a bit blurry. Or maybe what they say about blondes are true? Or maybe just the heels that slowed her down?

Related image

  • Just want to add another conversation here

Danny: I help her (Rachel) out with the kids sometimes. I put Charlie down to bed sometime?

Of course my question then, why did Steve have to babysit 2 weeks ago, if Danny only helps out sometimes and puts him to bed only every now and then? Where was Rachel then?

Koala Smartass: But you said it yourself. That scene was just concocted to serve the fans and their fantasies of the happy McDanno family …..

  • I would really like to know why they all had to go back to HQ to discuss Steve’s plan?

Koala Smartass: But Charlie left his toys there. How else would Steve have explained it to them without the toys? (Although, it could have been left in Danno’s car as well …. and same explanation with it done on the side of the road. )

  • Why is Danny talking on his phone to Steve, but they are actually all in radio contact with the whole team the whole time and Steve is not talking back on a phone to him?

Koala Smartass: It at least keeps his one hand busy and then prevents Danny from flapping round both his arms too much.

I just want to add here, that I totally agree with Danny. We have seen Steve do reckless stuff on the spur of the moment, but nothing as idiotic as this. In real life – NOT realistic to achieve at all. MANY other more realistic and believable ways a trained SEAL can get onto such a moving vehicle, without risk of suicide. It is as if the writers have this uncontrollable need to be ridiculous.

  • And then the small “rescue” truck with the ramp on it. Where  did they get that? In the Batcave?

Koala Smartass: Now you are just plain silly. I am sure those trucks equipped with such a ramp, are easily available for rent all over the Island.

 truck gif

  • So now Steve has the ability to just jump straight up through that hole in the container roof, with sharply cut edges and climb out on top without any assistance?

Koala Smartass: You must have missed some of the dialogue – I am sure he said some like, “Beam me up Scotty

  • Just a general observation here with loads of sarcasm attached – The TV channels in Hawaii can’t even carry a live report of the Sunset On the Beach or  the Blessing ceremony properly every year with proper footage to show – but oh boy, they can have a helicopter in the air and run a life story of a hot pursuit on the highway?

Koala Smartass: Now you sound like lots of people in the fandom – confusing real life with the make-believe world of Five-0.

  • Some random thoughts:
    • Contrary to what many feel is going on, I believe that the writers want to show that Kono is invested in this case because she is a woman first and secondly she is thinking of being a mother and wanting to make the world a better place for children. It would be so cliché if she was abused and I am glad they are not going that route.
    • And also contrary to what many of you think, I think that the show this time around will actually remember that Steve is sick beyond the first minutes of the season opener, and they will use it A LOT during the next season – and not forget about it. Although, I really hope they would stick to their forgetfulness this time.
    • The communication between Steve and Danny was much less annoying than in the resent times. There was actually some normality of sanity in it. Wonder if they are setting a new tone for the new season – hopefully. That means the annoyance will still be there, but hopefully less nerve-wracking. If they can just cool it with the baiting, then show might be a pleasure to watch.
    • The make-up and Alex’s phenomenal acting really created a believably sick Steve. Damn, this man really knows how to create a feeling – without making a fuss.

This was then the finale of Season 7. Loads of action and cliffhangers for everyone to choose from …… just like we were promised. It was all there, but for me there was something missing. It felt forced. Forced because they had to deLIVER something worthy of a finale. And forced because they had to set up some  uncertainties for Season 8 to keep people interested and talking for the next 4 months. Forced because they had to use old stories to make up stories for actors that might leave  …… And the questions or cliffhangers from last week seems nearly forgotten. Is the USA still under attack from inside the government, and will Chin propose and or move?

So once again it suits the writers that Steve is an idiot and did not look properly after himself and never got himself properly checked out after he was exposed to radiation. Just like they made him an idiot to believe a battery could protect him in the first place. Clever thinking from the writers? No – for me it is clutching at straws and ‘dumbing down‘ their hero. Maybe he is actually the HULK now – that would explain him losing his mind at stages, doing stupid stuff every now and then.

I like my action heroes to be action heroes, but I prefer it if they are clever as well. And that’s what I liked about Steve McGarrett when I started watching Hawaii Five-0 – he was a man of conviction with both brain and brawn for me.  Was I THAT wrong?

*dontknow*

And that was Steve’s  story for:

  2. Oh FOYeur, you and your timeline ;-). I never notice this kind of stuff, the only thing I notice is Steve changing his cloths without me witnessing it. Boo!
To be honest I found this episode exciting. Love this crazy ass Steve. Is it realistic? Nope. Was it very well acted and performed? Yes. -> I am in.
Was it a finale? Nope nope and nope. For me last week’s epi will always be the finale! It was so much better!
I disagree on Steve and Danny being less annoying. I found Danny superduper extremely awefully dannoying. From the very first moment he arrived at HQ with Charlie he was a jerk. He never comes up with anything to get the job done. Instead he rants and rants and insults and rants… Horrible.
So let’s sum up what show has done to Steve.
    – They took away his youth.
    – They killed his father.
    – They gave him a terrible mother.
    – They took away his love.
    – They took away his liver.
    – They took away his health.
Instead they gave him Dannoying. A friend that lacks even the basics of friendship, partnership or polite manners. No wonder that Steve did not talk to him about his spells and the doctor’s diagnosis until he had to and could not hide it any longer.
I hate that Steve is sick. And there I thought Liver was a bad idea.

I wish Steve would only radiate love for someone he lets in….

  3. This is an EXCELLENT review! I think you’re right about McG being Mick undercover. Mick could’ve made that jump thru the hole in the semi roof easily! Also explains the speedy healing and how quickly he gets to & from Gitmo, Morocco, Wisconsin, around the island, etc etc etc so quickly.
BTW it highly annoys me that the character has gone from not eating a malasada without bypass surgery to eating lunch from a vending machine 3 times a week. Not character growth, just shoddy continuity IMO. You are so right about the lack of attention to previous details. They’ve completely lost track of McG

The episode was just kind of meh for me. The magic computer found the guy from a pencil sketch on a piece of notebook paper? Yeah, right. FWIW, I read on another site that the kind of uranium Steve was exposed to is totally harmless. So what happened to Steve the science guy?? Bring him back, please.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Well at the time, the first guy who worked with the bomb got sick immidiately and died. The bomb expert warned Steve against the exposure. So from the shows side the bomb exposure was dangerous. That is how they wrote it at the time.
I thought all nuclear exposure was dangerous …. But I have no real knowledge about it, but that does not really matter if the show wrote it as dangerous then that is what it is.

I took my guess at the level of radiation poisoning from the post by the Mayo Clinic. It shows the amount of time for symptoms to appear from light exposure to heavy exposure. No way Steve could avoid having severe symptoms show if it was heavy. Nausea and vomiting within six hours and fatigue within 4 weeks sounds right since he took no time away from the unit (that we know about ). Anything greater would have been noticed by the team. As long as they don’t give him hair loss or make him sterile, it is just another corner they have painted themselves into and have no idea how to get out. He will be cured by episode three.

I know the show won’t suddenly declare it harmless, I just think it’s funny that they think people who actually know this stuff in the real world don’t watch TV. Scientists and weapons experts watch TV, too. 😉
I don’t know how they’ll cure Steve, but I’m sure they will. 🙂

This was a joy to read. I am just sitting here giggling. I think the writers actually googled the symptoms of radiation poisoning this time, having been humiliated at how bad a job they did with LIVER. Serious side effects would have been apparent almost immediately and even the Dannoying moron would have noticed something was wrong. So maybe it was mild exposure and if there are some Steve-lite episodes, he can be off seeing other specialists, or getting a fruit salad facial to bring some color into his cheeks.

Steve knows Danny is heading back to Rachel. And there are enough hints about Danny retiring that it looks like a go for next season. I just hope its early in the season, and he only misses 20 episodes this time but he’s in five, so we can’t forget what a major pain the character really is.

I’ll take your scenario, Mama, except instead of using his Steve-lite times to hunt for specialists or tasty spa masks, I hope he’s off to LA hunting a new tv show…er…task force…to go head up! Cos this one has crapped out. 🙄

I totally agree with your wrap-up, Foyeur, and share your frustration with the timeline, the OOC McG, and the utter failure of the writers to be consistent with Show’s history. Still, there were opportunities for a finale here, but Show failed to use them. And the Dannoying has gotta go. The worst scene ever was that opening scene where a mean-spirited Danno lied (hey, a character on Show who lied about McG…should we not railroad him outta town and tell atPLenkov to never bring him back?) to plant ugly thoughts of the steadfast McG in his innocent son’s head should be spliced together with the scene of our generous and kind McG lying to the same child that the worthless and incompetent Danno built his supercool racing bed…which WE all know McG actually built. Those two scenes show the vast chasm in morals and social conscience between the “bros”. Danno should be fired and McG should stick to his actual friends, Chin, Grover, Kono and a good portion of the island, including a sizable chunk of the criminal element. All better and truer buds than LyingDanno.

And indeed, what little worth this disappointing, much-pimped-by-PL ep offered was all due to Alex and his amazing talent managing somehow to make the ridiculous seem hard but possible, the emos seem breath-catchingly real, and McG seem heroic yet heart-achingly real. Sigh. ❤

I agree that Danno was contemptible for what he told his kid about McGarrett being in a constant state of time-out (way to “respect your elders”!), but don’t ignore the fact that McGarrett told Charlie “Why is your dad such a poopie-head sometimes?” 🙂

That said, I totally enjoyed the way McGarrett went after Danno later with a huge smile on his face, saying, among other things, “You’re like a ten-year-old with a crush [because] you’re in love with your ex-wife. And you won’t admit it.” Have we ever seen McGarrett responding to Danno in this way before?

I too was watching the timeline I agree it was messed up. All I want to know is can anyone tell me when Sunset on the Beach is in September 2017? To go 5000 miles and not know for sure is crazy. I have reservations for last two weeks in September with two Fridays. Please any info will help. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks Ya’ll.

    • Terry, it is very difficult to plan for it beforehand. Even to know if there will indeed be a SOTB 8. The Network can just as well decide not to do it anymore.
The only time we will know for sure if there will be one, and when it will be, is when Peter Lenkov announces it officially. That normally happens only a month ahead of time.
In the past it has been a week or more before the official start of the season and I think last year even the night after the season started.

At the moment, the only thing you can do is make an educated guess from past experiences and hope for the best.

I loved reading this, and your sarcasm. I don’t know where the H50 writers are planning on taking us on this storyline of radiation poisoning. Wow I kinda wasn’t expecting that, I thought Steve was alright, but hmmm apparently not. I hope this doesn’t mean this will be how Steve/Alex will be leaving H50 at the end of season 8 😦

The main thing that has annoyed me throughout this entire show’s run is how they always stick Kono, Abby, Catherine and any other woman cop in heels. Like what the heck?

I’m sure they’re just like… “Oh hey, I’m going out to investigate gruesome murders and other horrible crimes, and I may get shot at (they are with McGarrett most of the time after all), lemme just stick these heels on so I can look good when I do”

I tweeted a snarky thing about Abby being in 8 inch heels at the blockade and Julie Benz copied it and tweeted that they were “only” 4 inch heels – which I thought was kind of funny on her part.

This show was full of questions to do with time and topography.

According to Google Maps, if the bad guy is driving from his house in Kaneohe which is located somewhere near the beach there to the Kalaeloa Airport to be on a plane to Carson City, Nevada, this would probably take about 35-40 minutes. (His house seemed to be a really massive house, by the way, both when seen at the beginning of the show and also in the Google Maps-like view from above.)

When we first see this truck, it is driving on a viaduct, which looks like it is the “right” viaduct of a divided highway, and the truck is driving the wrong way! But maybe this is just an entrance to the main drag or something.

Anyway it is difficult to figure out where this truck is really driving when it is being chased by Five-Zero and the cops. Eventually it is forced off the road to take the H3 highway by Grover driving his Chevrolet Suburban. This was kind of stupid, even though there was a SWAT truck and some other vehicle on the road ahead which the truck would have had to knock over like he did the police cars when Abby almost got creamed.

I didn’t understand why the bad guy was so easily forced over by Grover … was Mr. Baddie concerned that his truck might get scratched or something?

After the truck goes through the tunnel, you can see an exit for Kaneohe on the right side, so the truck is basically back close to where it started!

There are lots of questions about the ridiculous stunt where McGarrett jumps on to the roof of the truck. Like nowhere do we hear from Jerry which lane the truck is going to be in when it comes out of the tunnel. Isn’t this kind of important?

I actually phoned up some local place which sells trailers and grilled one of the guys there with questions. He told me some interesting things:

    – You cannot open the roll-up door of a trailer like this from the inside. But it doesn’t look like the third bad dude at the beginning of the show who rolls the door down locks it, though. (Do you think the people making the show anticipated my evil eye, LOL?) Note there is a mini-ladder for the girls to use to get into the truck, but this is not put inside the truck in case you have questions about the next point…
    – The height from the floor to the ceiling of a trailer like this is 110 inches or 9 feet, 2 inches. So maybe McGarrett could pull himself up through the hole in the ceiling he created if he jumped, he wouldn’t have had to have the girls do a cheerleader-like pyramid for him to climb on. (I dunno about this, I am 6 feet tall and in my bare feet, I can reach up to 7 feet 10 inches when standing on my tiptoes.)
    – The way McGarrett undid the trailer from the truck is sort of realistic, but the guy at the trailer company said words to the effect: “you would have to have a pretty long arm to do this, because the metal rod you pull out which unlocks the kingpin [the thing on the trailer that actually connects it to the truck] is about 3 feet in from the front of the trailer.”
    – BUT (talking about realism) … if you cut the brake lines to the trailer as McGarrett did, the brakes in the trailer will kick in big time. This is a safety measure called “dynamiting the brakes.” If the brakes were suddenly applied like this, the trailer might start fishtailing all over the place.
    – It might also start fishtailing all over the place for another reason, because if the trailer was detached from the truck, the front of the trailer would head right for the ground (where the girls are all huddled up!!), though there is this thing called the “landing gear” which is what normally holds the truck up when it is sitting detached from the truck. That is jacked up several inches when the trailer is connected to the truck and moving. The guy said this would probably break off if the trailer was detached and moving forward at a considerable rate of speed (much faster than the 30 miles an hour mentioned in the show at one point, I would suggest), it wouldn’t tear up the pavement as was shown on the show.

LOL, I’m loving everyone’s detailed, technical and highly accurate analyses of all the things the writers, producers, directors, stunt crew, costume department and continuity people (ha! that’s a joke!) got wrong in the Season Eight finale. FOYeur, to me the show feels like a violent video game AND the multiple comic book heroes you mentioned. The characters, plots and storylines are all being written two dimensional now.

It feels like a mash up of comic book heroes and violent video games, which is why Steve McGarrett can jump from tall overpasses in a single bound and land perfectly on top of a speeding truck without breaking legs, ankles or shattering his hips, be bloodied, beaten up and near death in one scene and have no scars in the very next scene (on the same day!), change his clothes faster than a speeding bullet (lol, where’s that hidden phone booth!), be able to jump ten-twelve feet unassisted to come up through the hole in the truck ceiling, miraculously be able to reach three feet to uncouple the trailer from the cab, etc., etc., etc. Well, you get the idea.

I suspect that Peter stole the best, most seasoned Five-O writers to write for MacGyver and then hired a new crew of unseasoned 20-somethings to write the show this year. The show is feeling radically different to me this year, especially the last 6-7 episodes.

Steve’s been acting in a very manic way, too, especially when he lit into Danny about Rachel. As Mr. Mike says, have we ever seen Steve talk to Danny that way before? Steve acted the same way throughout almost all of the bomb episode. He was really emotionally wired.

In all of Peter’s Twitter responses, he’s thrilled at how well the show is doing (NOTE: the numbers have dropped like a rock for the last 3 episodes, Peter) and he’s delighted to tell us that there’s more just like this coming next year. When I read the posters who incessantly tell him how AWESOME each episode is, I wonder if Peter’s writing his own Twitter reviews and posting them! Are these people watching the same show that we are? And once again, Peter’s strongly stating that the show could/will go past Season Eight. We’ll see, Peter. I hope that Alex leaves at the end of Season Eight. I want to see him do other projects.

            ‘Tis a mystery to me.

We think it’s awful. Its dwindling fan base thinks it’s great. It’s all in your perception. The writers have to write in a specific style for that show, as they re-imagine the original show from the 1980’s. It was a nerdy, gadgety, Mr. Wizzard kind of show. “Look, MacGyver can repair the plane with two strings and a pair of pliers!” Five-O has written Steve that way a lot, too. Which is what might have given Peter the idea in the first place to re-do MacGyver. Before this new show appeared, I remember reading jokes about how Steve “McGyvered” this and that. Navy SEAL survival training.

I remember last fall, Episode 150, Catherine’s return. His Twitter blew up all over the place with the various fan bases bashing each other and Peter. I remember that he finally just blocked everyone and deleted all the Tweets. lol, maybe he’s doing that now for any negative Tweets?

Absolutely right. When you care about something you want it to be the very best it can be. People who praise that which they know is stupid are being dishonest about their motives. I guess it must be an ego trip to think that the EP is their BFF because he returns a tweet, but the truth is, other than that mere courtesy, he doesn’t know any of us is alive or cares what we think.

But more important than all this nonsense is the fact that some people, who shall be nameless, (and run this site) have not found us a picture of the entire Back Tattoo. Get forward to start thinking about that.

you did more research on the trucks than they do for most of the episodes, LOL.

Someone else told me the brake lines would do just what you said. As for the kingpin – it’s under pressure while the truck is actually moving, so the chances that even the awespome McGarrett could dislodge it would be slim to none

well- so,so,so not impressed with ‘season finale.’ Didn’t seem like a finale. Do Not like the whole radiation poisoning thing. I have thought Grace/Kono was pregnant in real life for about 2 mos now- her face has changed – I went back to the season she was pregnant …hum…… Danny can go do whatever in my books now. Chin and Abby – whatever- I would hate to see Abby make demands on Chin to move especially when she lied. Would hate to see poor little Sarah moved once again. Just seemed too jumbled. Of course, love our man and he is soooooo good. Thank you for all of your posts, photos and gifs this year- you truly work hard at this – which I ‘m sure gives you pleasure and you deliver pleasure- so mahalo

Lynne, I think Chin will stay. If Danny and Kono both leave, they need Chin! I love Daniel and hope they give him more storylines next year. Chi’s been on the back burner this year and I hope he gets more compelling storylines next year as well. I think Abby may replace Kono, if Grace does leave. I like Abby, so that’s fine with me.

It was an ok episode. I can see Eric Norris is familiar with old action movies of the past. I’ve seen Clint Eastwood stand on a bridge waiting for a school bus to go under so that he could jump on top, but not nearly as high a distance as Steve. Also because Dirty Harry was such a bamf he let the bad guy see him so he could be afraid knowing he was going to stop him. With that said they could tone down the stunts a little. I do like the hand-to-hand, maybe slightly less violent if that’s even possible.

Kono is a nut, but I have no problem with her taking off. Adam doesn’t seem to have a problem keeping things from her so I figure this must be the nature of their happy union.

The bickering between Danny and Steve will never end. It’s a staple from the beginning although I would appreciate it if they tone it down a little. I didn’t like what Danny told Charlie, but I think it’s tit for tat with him and Steve. I had no problem with Steve lying that Danny fixed the bed for Charlie. I figured it wasn’t a big deal since he lied at the card game and said he spent all that money on those fabulous sandwiches the guys loved so much. Of course since Steve’s supposedly so cheap maybe they just automatically knew he was lying.

Steve and Danny simply must find a better therapist to address their issues. The issues being Steve’s intrusiveness into Danny’s life, especially since Steve doesn’t like to share unless he absolutely has too with anybody and Danny’s insistence on making Steve a surrogate for his late brother Matt. He’s equivocating Steve’s fearlessness and willingness to do death-defying actions on the job with Matt’s stupid recklessness. Of course Steve’s actions although heroic will probably land him in the same arena as Matty, dead!

My thoughts on some parts of the show. I doubt Steve’s radiation poisoning will last more than a second and PL has already stated something to that effect, if he can be believed. I think Jenna and Lori were the only two women I didn’t have to see look uber hot as they were doing their scenes and definitely not in heels, bikini’s or tight dresses. Chin is the most realistic and level headed for the most part. Like everyone else Grover just falls in line behind Steve and follows the leader. He’s lost his edge and bores me. I love Chi and a lot of his work before 5-0 because he’s always played tough and in charge. This is not his best role and with his knee and weight issues I see the struggling when they do some of the action scenes and stair climbing. Last, but never the least. When I post on Steve if it sounds negative never take it that way. I love Alex and any role I see him in, but I want to be as unbiased as I can be. Also as I said in a previous post I love a guy like Steve he’s as perfect as they get, but also flawed. I don’t like to my men to be perfect and placed on a pedestal. Of course, I don’t like jerks either.

Oh and one more thing. I must not be paying enough attention. It looks like Steve has the same going out on a criminal search uniform all the time for the last few episodes. I mean what the heck happens to all those great cargo pants we see him in from earlier episodes? Perhaps he’s lost weight. I miss the black one’s from 7.07 and last year’s green from the Sara introduction episode. Sorry so long. No more ranting.

Totally agree about Steve’s “uniform”. I’ve been griping about it for a while now. No 40 year old man would wear those pants. And especially not a military guy! Seriously, Superdry is not the only company that makes khaki cargo pants, you can buy them in any store with a men’s department. A real world Steve would buy a lot of his “in the field” wardrobe at a military surplus store and there are plenty of them on Oahu, but I’ve always thought the show had the weirdest wardrobe department on TV. Since we’re griping about clothes, get the women some decent looking outfits and some practical shoes!

      Liked by 1 person

      • mamayorkie

I blame the wardrobe department for 90% of the bad clothing choices. Where the female character are concerned, they have a disconnect between classy and tacky. Either they pull out the Hooker rack or they pull out the grandma rack. Anytime I see a really great looking outfit, I am convinced that the actress owns it herself and just has good taste.

Just keep Steve in blue and all will be forgiven.

      • I have to disagree with you on the pants part. I think you would not appreciate hubby’s choice of clothing. 😉 We don’t want to be defined by age or deal with people’s expectations of what guys “our age” should act like or look like. I will never get what age has to do with it.
So Steve likes this pants – he wears them. That’s all.

I do love the cargos. They accentuate all his positive aspects, but for the past few episodes it looks like he’s wearing the exact same cargos. It looks like either the faded blue or grey and maybe a faded black and his working blue games t-shirt. Although I do love him in dark blue and black. Of course his slacks for Chin’s birthday party and black shirt were my favorite this season and the all black in 7.07.

Well, this episode sure gave Koala Smartass some material!!!

I wasn’t impressed with any of it, honestly. It didn’t feel finale worthy, and the timeline stuff was just so awful… OMG.

So, Chin and Abby STILL have a big decision to make, I guess? How long is he going to wait to tell her? I mean – IF he tells her at all (this IS Hawaii Five 0 after all…. )

LMAO that they ran to this case and left Charlie….. toyless by the side of the road???? Still looking for the vending machine? Given the amount of child kidnappings they’ve had to deal with – I was pretty shocked that Kono left Sarah alone in the store…..

ROFLMAO that the bad guy who was making the bomb died a horrible radiation death but Steve just has a tummy ache. Guess that battery really did work???

I suspect we will see about as much follow up on this one as we saw with the LIVER. Maybe less.

Remember Steve telling Danny that he didn’t have to take meds for his liver anymore? You take anti-rejection medication for the rest of your life with any organ transplant. An organ transplant is a HUGE, life-altering change to your body, which has to be continually medically monitored the rest of your life for signs of rejection or other life-threatening complications.

This show is doing a huge disservice to the complex subject of organ transplantation. Seriously, I’m surprised at Alex. He trained with the world famous transplant physician in preparation to do THREE RIVERS. He studied for months to understand the issues, he observed and he actually even was allowed to assist in doing actual transplants. Couldn’t he have talked to the writers?

Also, he is a spokesman for Donate For Life. He should be able to speak up about the writers trivotolizing organ transplants. Heart, liver, corneas, etc. Not a subject to be handled as lightly as the show does. Shame on everyone involved.

Totally agree, Dq. As someone who advocates publicly for organ donation, it’s odd that Alex acted and continues to act a storyline that’s 100% incorrect. Clearly, as he said in the interviews for Episode 150, he’s not allowed to give any input into the storylines and he doesn’t talk with the writers.

A friend of mine has Chiari Malformation, an excruciatingly painful and life threatening condition in the brain, spinal column and nervous system. She’s also friends with Hugh Laurie. I think, as an honor to her, they did a chiari storyline on HOUSE MD. And they TOTALLY botched the story! On a medical show! When I watched it, I threw things at the television, I was so pissed off!!! I lived through her horrific surgeries. She literally could die at any time. The surgery is beyond agonizing. The show just made it look like a cakewalk. It’s probably the most dangerous surgery you could ever have, and as Val said, you don’t die, you just wish you had, from the excruciating pain. None of that was shown on a medical show. Neither Val nor I could believe how badly they portrayed chiari. Better not to do it all then to misrepresent the severity of the condition, surgery or disease.

On a medical show! So, I guess I have to give Alex a pass. I believe that if he had the chance to give input, the storyline would have been much more realistic.

Okay, I love the predictions about McG’s blossoming superpowers.
I immediately saw the timeline issue and was completely annoyed. I did not notice the wardrobe stuff though. I cannot fathom how people can be so terrible at their job to not notice these things.
Anyway, I was annoyed by the timeline. I was annoyed by Abby – Chibby is forced, and what was that stand down with the semi? I was annoyed by over emotional Kono. Yes sex trafficking is a serious issue, but her one woman crusade (sparked by her unprofessional behavior during the first rumble with these guys) is just over the top. And oh, my goodness, that “wind beneath my wings” tribute to Jerry was horrendous! It would have been fine to go on in the background but to actually have Jerry respond to it with his tears took away valuable time that our main man could have used to give proper attention to his radiation exposure. The most important “cliff-hanger” was discussed outside the bathroom door!
I actually was okay with some of the Danny bickering in this one although I agree, Steve in the office was OOC.
I was fine with this as a season finale. I understood them using it so Danny would be in it and I was disgruntled about a few things in last week’s episode. However, I understand how last week’s would work as a season ender too.
From what I have read about radiation poisoning, a one time exposure would give effects pretty quickly due to a large, acute dose. The milder, drawn out effects I have seen on forensic shows (real ones) from small doses over a long period of time. I could not find anything about a one time, small dose. I assume his long term effects would either be sterility or cancer risks. Of course the complete lack of concern at his last liver appt. was kind of stupid, but i think we decided based on that scene that the doctor had not really examined Steve (otherwise why had Steve not put his shirt back on before the doc came in the room).

Oh, it’s going to be a long summer. I realized i have the chance for a Friday night social life now! I’ll probably just spend them surfing the web for AOL sightings!

The review updates a few “goofs” in what I posted previously here and elsewhere, like the fact that the back door on the truck was not locked after the girls were forced inside at the beginning of the show.

I love your site! It’s one of my favorites. I loved the original Hawaii Five-O and faithfully watched it for 12 years. I loved Jack Lord’s Steve McGarrett. I’m concurrently watching the new Hawaii Five-O and the classic Five-O side by side because I have CBS All Access. The old show had no CGI, militarized police force and no spectacular (and often ridiculously unrealistic) stunts. It relied solely on great storytelling. The scripts were always superb on that show. I just watched an episode last night from Season Seven. It had a continuous, evolving, mysterious storyline with clever plot twists up until the very last moment, when the true culprit was finally revealed. There must have been 15 different roads we traveled down, along with the characters, until Steve finally figured out what was really going on. I love that kind of storytelling.

I wish the writers of the new Hawaii Five-O could binge watch all 12 seasons of the original show. They’d see great storytelling. Many episodes would be just as compelling today as they were 40 years ago. Also, some of my favorite episodes were the lighthearted capers, with master character actors who portrayed elegant jewel thieves, art forgers, counterfeit money printing masters. They all led McGarrett on amusing, clever, sneaky chases to catch them. The episodes were witty, clever, lighthearted and a joy to watch. McGarrett clearly relished these adversaries.

I love your truck research! We’re having lots of fun here, so keep up the good work and join us as often as you can.

I hope so I think it would make for some good episodes for next season. Both of them worried about him it would be interesting. I don’t think Lynn could deal with his sickness very well. Just saying. The way that Alex’s character is now he would probably would love to see his mom and Catherine but the cases come first. Bringing Catherine back they could have here being suspended from CIA for helping Doris and Wo Fat’s father out of that compound.
Thanks for reading love this website.

If S8 is really the series end, then, yes, we will see Cath and Doris again. PL said that 707 was not the final appearance for anyone (so it may include Daddy Fat, too. ) My guess, and I am probably wrong, is that Doris will make some heroic sacrifice to save her son

PL gave an interview and said he had an endgame for McG’s love life. Since Ellie is just his bud, and Lynn was relegated to someone he has a fun time with but is not in his future, that leaves only Danny or Cath, The show airs on CBS at 9PM. Where are you placing your bet?

I was wondering how long it would be before we heard from the McRoll fans. So what was it? 77 posts? I have no doubt that MB is Pls end game. Why doesn’t he just make the jump to cable and cast her in a role that she does best? She can resume her title as” the most naked actress on TV”. It seems that is where she won her notoriety. That seems to be where her talents begin and end. And on regular TV, sorry ladies, we are never going to see her go at it , as Mister Mike labels it “like monkeys”. That is only acceptable on cable. Maybe, movies that go straight to video. She better make the move soon, before she gets too old. Hollywood is not kind to older actresses that only rely on their sex appeal. She is, after all, no Meryl Streep. Steve deserves better than that lying witch. He doesn’t have an Oedipus complex. That would be way too deep for this bunch of writers.

LOL! Tell us how you really feel! I don’t like Cath either, but I wouldn’t call her a “lying witch.” In fact, I think she was being totally truthful when she left in season 6. I know she made up the Nepal earthquake thing, but the rest of what she said is the truth that a life with Steve is not enough for her. The Navy wasn’t enough for her either because she left to chase some exciting fantasy job with an ex-boyfriend. This was the story line where I started to really dislike her. The ex being a SEAL too made her look like a SEAL groupie. Don’t the writers know that the Navy has other hot guys besides SEALs? How ’bout fighter pilots?? 🙂
I do think she will appear in Steve’s life again, but I hope they don’t rekindle the romance because she’ll leave him for something more exciting just like Doris did.

Hmm, where to begin. First of all, I truly apologize for personally insulting anyone here. That was not my intention at all. I don’t even want to insult MB. I never followed her Twitter drama. Do I think Catherine is good for Steve? No. She lied to him when she came back for Konos wedding for one last roll in the hay. With his level of naval Intel clearence she surely could have told him that she was with the CIA. But she didn’t. She even admitted that he was the last person she wanted to lie to. But she did. And, Lynn is regulated to someone he has fun with? What’s wrong with that? Everyone needs some fun in their life. I have been married for 43 years, and I still have fun with my husband. It’s the glue that holds us together. Of course, we usually have a roll in the hay more often the once or twice a season. That helps too. Again, I am sincerely sorry if you think I insulted you. That was never my intention. I will try to behave from now on. DQ

                  Hi Dq,
If you go back and re-read your post, you’re pretty rough on Michelle. You’re passing judgement on her body and her skills as an actress.

I like Catherine and Steve. I’m sorry the SHOW broke them up with stupid storylines which essentially destroyed her character. Suddenly, she began to do things that were against the core of the person we’d seen during the previous four years. Peter’s clearly schizoid about the character. She’s here, she’s gone, she’s here, she’s gone again, oh my gosh, she’s here again, and then she’s gone! For me, Catherine and Steve are beautifully matched. And she’s military, so they come from the same background and they “get” each other.

But, if Steve falls in love with someone else, I’m fine with that. I just go with the flow. I’m wondering if a lot of fan bases don’t want the character with anyone, which is why he’s essentially by himself now. Anything romantic is definitely happening off screen. Boring!!

So, let’s all just wait and see what happens.

So I guess it took 78 posts for somebody to show their absolute hate for Michelle. And then with it to make this post that had nothing to do with her, about Michelle.
NO wonder Peter keeps on bringing Cath back, because even if she is not there, she creates a stir and conversation. And that is good for him and his ratings. It is not because of his love for her, but because of keeping the conversation going …..

Yes, it will be interesting to see where there go with this storyline for Steve. But I do not have high hopes for anything really deep from them.

If they kill off his character I don’t think the show will last much longer because 5-0 is him it was created by McGarrett. If they fade him off into the sunset he could come back and help with a case or just visit. I know that they probably won’t put them back together but I can only hope. I certainly hope not, anyway. Glad to hear he’s feeling better though as no job is worth a lifetime of pain. I hope they bring Catherine back to give him a happy ending before he leaves. I’m imagining that he might be thinking “OK, this is it, this is what I’m doing and I’m going to be happy with it.” Stem cell treatment sounds like a miracle. It probably repairs the damage to the muscles, tendons and ligaments which he’s really damaged over the years. Bottom line, I’m glad to hear that Alex is healthy and happy again.

I saw a few images and part of the interview. I was happy to hear that it was working and he felt better. I did notice this season in the finale and at the wrap up party he looked less exhausted and run down than last year. I was sorry to read he’s missing his real front teeth due to his dedication. I certainly believe a certain someone should at least praise and acknowledge him for putting his heart and soul into his work and never phoning it in.

Right? Lenkov NEVER compliments Alex. He compliments so many, often for so little, but ignores Alex’s consistency of perfection and just takes his incredible VOEs for granted! 😡

I totally agree! Alex is the glue which has held this show together for seven years. He’s in most of the scenes which means he always has to be there, whether he’s feeling well or really ill. He also performs most of the crazy, physically demanding and dangerous physical action scenes (think of that crazy hand to hand combat scene a few weeks ago where he was almost strangled to death.) He does this effortlessly, with grace, kindness, dignity, honor, and always a sense of fun. He makes it fun for everyone else on the set, even when he’s hurting like crazy. He’s clearly the show’s leader and he knows it. He’s embraced this challenge with love and grace and honor.

Alex, you’re my hero. No one has any idea how hard this is to do and how utterly physically, emotionally and spiritually exhausting it is to work out flat out crazy 15 hours a day for ten months straight.

After watching the entire series on Netflix I bought the DVDs for my personal collection and Peter lenkov does acknowledge and praise Alex’s dedication and work ethic. We just don’t always see it or hear it very publicly. I do agree that he should acknowledge it in the media especially if he wants his star to stay and I just don’t see 5-0 lasting very long without Alex and if Alex goes, Scott said he will too and yes, everyone else is important too, but the Steve – Danno dynamic is the essence of the show for me.

Good to hear that Peter does give Alex kudos for his dedication and hard work. I just wish he’d do it in interviews that are seen and read by millions of fans around the world.

    • Hi Torrie
Not sure where everybody is getting the thing about that Scott said he would leave if Alex leaves – that is all purely fan speculation. Scott has done no interviews, since the one in November where Alex said he want to leave at the end of Season 8.
A few years ago I would have totally agree with you on the Steve /Danno dynamic, BUT the past 3 season, most of the best episodes were without Danny. The three best for me this season 7:07, 7:17 and 7:24 – there were no Danny.

        FOYeu:

I have not found any statement by Scott saying he would leave if AOL did. I believe he never said such a thing. Each of the actors will do that which is best for themselves, independent of what any of the others may choose to do. This whole idea came from some fans who have made many wild speculations, including some that were clearly defamatory and libelous. They are then posted and repeated as gospel by others. It is a sad thing when some in the fandom forget this is a fictional show about fictional characters who exist only on the pages of script and behave only in the way that the writers decide they will. Neither the fans nor the actors have a say in how the story plays out. PL has made that clear from the beginning.

And, McG will NEVER show up on their doorsteps holding an engagement ring, but if they want to fantasize, that is their right. Steve did not cheat on them with Catherine, anymore than Steve cheated on Catherine with Danny. This could possibly what is at the heart of so much hate in the fandom. It is a pity.

      • Add 7.04 to your list of the best episodes in S7 and I am in! Those four are my re-watch worth episodes in S7. And one part of episode 7.25.

I love the Steve/Danny episodes a lot, but I’ll be shocked if Scott has signed to do an 8th year. The first few episodes of Season Eight should be interesting, since so many plot lines were left in the air in the Season Seven finale. Steve’s getting used to the idea that Danny’s retiring. He did buy him the chef hat, which is a huge gesture of acceptance. And if he does leave the show, the producers might bring him back as a guest star on a few episodes next year. But the plot twist of Steve’s illness threw me a curve ball. If Scott has signed for an 8th year, Steve’s illness could cause Danny to delay his retirement plans for a while. He’s got to be really concerned about his partner.

So, I’m intrigued by next year after all!!!

I am glad that Alex is feeling better hope he does more seasons. That chef’s hat was a good gift he knows that Danny’s restaurant will be a success. I think Lou will move back to Chicago for Samantha she got accepted into Northwestern. Chin & Abby will move to San Francisco and run a task force there. Kono will quit and have a family with Adam. Steve will be all alone or disappear. I know I have said in my other comments that I hope Catherine comes back to be with him but some of y’all are saying that Steve should be left alone and doesn’t need anyone he’s the one that needs someone the most. These are my predictions if the show ends with season 8. Sorry just ranting and IMHO.

I thought about this. Since the show is in syndication and they can still make money off of it, they could do this show like they used to do shows in the 80’s and 90’s. They just didn’t end. Years ago on the last episode of Cheers the womanizing Sam Malone revealed to his long time waitress that for all the years he was always primping and making sure his hair looked great it was really a toupee. He swore her to secrecy and told her he would see her tomorrow at work. The show ceased to exist, but they just went on with their everyday lives in tv land. Also it works if they ever want to do 2 hour movie or bring it back for mini episodes like they’ve been doing lately, which kind of stinks but writing creativity in the 21st century doesn’t appear to be as great as it was in the 20th. I spend a lot of time watching television shows that were on before I was born. They were well-written back then.
