I specifically made this transcript after I once again saw the 10-year-old debate about the colour of Alex O’Loughlin’s eyes still going on in present day. I realised that we have never done the transcript of this interview before.
In the interview Alex answers the question about the colour of his eyes himself. And at the end I added some explanation about hazel eyes, and also pictures of his eyes, in natural light and at night under lights, that hopefully have not been altered too much. There you can see the different colours clearly – I hope.

Part 2
Question: If Moonlight was to air on cable, what kind of naughtiness would you want Mick to get into?
Alex: There would be a lot more blood. There would be a lot more sex. There would be a lot more everything.
Question: What power from the original pilot do you miss most?
Alex: What I do miss is the ability that Mick had to see other vampires. And he’d look at them and then … he sort of had that infrared vision where he could see the heat patterns of the human, but when he looked at the vampires, it was just sort of like this swirling ash. And I thought that was fantastic.
Question: Are all the ‘chivalric’ gestures written into the script?
Alex: For the most part. I certainly …. I certainly brought them into the character in the first ….. You know, until the writers got to know the character that I was delivering. And then now they have seen me do it, they could sort of write it as we go.
Question: Do the cast members have any input on the sets for their character’s homes, or music used on the show?
Alex: No. Not really. There are very clear departments. I mean everybody has a job. You know I can make suggestions. The sets …. we have Alfred Sole our designer is incredible. So I would never … I wouldn’t even think about that.
Question: What part of American-style celebrity are you enjoying, and what are you dreading?
Alex: I am really enjoying the support that having some celebrity brings to the job that you are working on, and to other things that you might be interested in. Particularly like community-based stuff like this blood drive and things that we do for other people.
What am I dreading? Not really anything. You know what I mean. It’s not a dread, but I guess I think about losing my anonymity sometimes, which I don’t really want to happen.
Question: What is the funniest thing that has happened to you during filming?
Alex: The funniest thing that has happened? Well, it was the funniest thing and the saddest thing at the same time. But probably having my entire show recast after shooting the initial pilot.
That wasn’t funny, ‘Ha-ha’, and you know I love those actors I was working with. But it was just the most inane….. Yeah, it was funny on a very queer level.
Question: What color are your eyes? You wouldn’t believe the debate that has gone on!
Alex: They’re … they are kind of like.. They are hazelly blue, but they change colour, depending on how much sleep I’ve had. If …. When the sun is out. I know a lot of people say that, but mine usually do … They change colour.
Question: If you could be any cartoon character, who would you be and why?
Alex: That’s a great question. Oh, that’s such a great question. Who would I be? Uhm …. Oh look, I’d probably be Bugs Bunny. Just cause he’s ….. You know, he just runs circles around everybody. And you know every so … you know at regular intervals you find him kicking back eating a carrot and just doing what he wants to do.
- An interesting explanation and description I found on the internet about Hazel eyes
The science behind Hazel Eyes: Hazel eyes are one of the least understood eye colors. What color are hazel eyes? This color is semi-rare and is a combination of several other colors including green and brown. Hazel eyes have less melanin than brown eyes, but more than blue eyes. This eye color can be difficult to define since there is often substantial variation in this eye color. Hazel eyes often appear to shift in color from brown to green. People with this eye color often have a multicolored iris with one color being found close to the pupil and a different color found around the edges. One study indicates that 74% of hazel eyes have a brown ring around the pupil. Hazel eyes are a combination of Rayleigh scattering, the principle that makes the sky and blue eyes appear blue, and melanin, the pigment that makes brown eyes brown. They can appear to change color as they reflect colors around them more so wearing green makes them look more greenish, where wearing brown can make them look darker.
So just to answer the question again:
According to Alex O’Loughlin himself, his eyes are Hazelly-blue, and they change colour, depending on circumstances around him.
Eye colour chart:
For me Alex’s eyes look the most like No 43 – and they describe it here as Blue-Hazel. (Maybe someone should tell Alex to call his eyes Blue-Hazel instead, and not Hazelly-Blue? 😀 )

Love this!! Those happen to be 2 of my favorite pictures featuring his eyes. The one from the Speed Racer premiere . . they twinkle. Thanks

Thanks for these two posts and pictures, FOYeur! The B/W one makes me dizzy. How can there be so much beauty amassed in one man?

Ah I remember this. As a not English speaker I thought before hazel eyes were just brown. Like hazelnuts. But after this, like you, I looked it up. Now I like the term chameleon eyes.
Did you notice that in the latest episode of 5-0 (7.20) his eyes sometimes had different colors? Or was it just me? One eye more brownish the other one more blueish.

Oh btw he would be a cute Bugs Bunny.
Me thinks.
(Thanks for all the distraction here. My dog, Pinsel, had surgery on her paw and now she’s worse than a sick hubby. Lol.)

Hope Pinsel gets better soon. That´s bad, if he is worse than a sick hubby 😀

Hazel eyes often confuse people; are they gray, green, blue or brown? They are all of these colors, depending on many things, I know, I’m the only female in my family who doesn’t have hazel eyes! What color they are wearing also is a strong influence on what color the eyes appear to be.

After intense scrutiny, I think Alex’ eyes are gray blue. I don’t see hazel in his eyes. The definition of hazel: “a reddish brown or greenish brown color, especially in the color of the eyes.” I always thought hazel eyes are brown-green, sometimes with gold flecks around the iris. I see blue in Alex’s gorgeous orbs. And then other times they appear gray, in soft light.
Hazel is totally confusing, and I guess it can be any color you want it to be!

Hi Kathysr
I do not really understand your comment. Are you saying that Alex do not know how to discribe the colour of his own eyes?

We all have a different idea of what hazel is, per Janno above. My eyes change color, too, from blue to green to gray depending on what light I’m in and what color clothing I’m wearing.
lol, I need to stand really close to Alex and peer deeply into those eyes. That will convince me that they’re hazelly blue.

Maybe I’m weird but if someone describes his own eyes as hazelly blue I tend to believe him. So, yeah, I am sure Alex’ eyes are hazelly blue and change color exactly like he said. And after seeing thousands of pics and screens over the last 10 years I am absolutely convinced!

I got to the root of the problem of the endless debate …… He should call it Blue-Hazel and not Hazelly-Blue. 😀

And then according to Alex himself, it will still depend on circumstances around you, what the colour of his eyes will be that day. And then you will still insist that he does not know the colour of his own eyes? 😀
Here is another person describing their blue-hazel eyes on Urban dictionary:
Blue-hazel
Eyes that are blue-green-gray possibly with orange or brown spots which seem to change color based on the lighting, clothing, makeup, and reflects off surroundings.
Person asks “What color are your eyes?”
I reply “Blue-hazel.”
Person asks “What color would that be defined as?”
I answer “Well, it’s not hazel because hazel eyes are brown and green mixed together, such as a caramel apple. Blue-hazel eyes are blue eyes that are green and gray with orange or brown spots in them, and they also change color based on the lighting and what they wear.”
I think that is a rather great explanation. But maybe this person also do not really know their own eyes?
I added a chart to the post ……

I think he’s pretty close to #43, too. Eye color changes as we age, though. Mine used to to be #51 and now they are more like #41. If somebody asked him today almost 10 years later, he might give a different answer.
