The Steve McGarrett Story – No # 161 (Epi 7:18) The Tough Mudder Race Part 2

Loads of action drama and suspense, together with 42 minutes of bromance and a sentimental family gathering at the end. It sounds like the perfect Hawaii Five-0 episode …….

718-9

Here are some of my thoughts.

  • Sorry, but did I miss something or what? Was this Hawaii Five-0 or an episode of MacGyver or some weird crossover where McG now turned into MacGyver? It was as if we were in some long MacGyver obstacles course, all while a very dangerous bomb was ticking down an hour. Why not take more than an hour and at least make it more realistic to get through the jungle and negotiate all the problems?

Koala Smartass: But then there would be no urgency  you idiot. It is Five-0, you have to create some unrealistic drama.

718-15

  • What a waste of time and money – a mock imaginary explosion that was only an imaginary scenario, sketched by Steve to explain a useless point to the trainees.

Koala Smartass: Maybe they had some extra cash lying around for special effects and they realised it will go to waste if they don’t use it?

718-27

  • Did these two men really become bickering kids now? They have really degraded from teenagers to kids this time. I felt embarrassed for them in front of these trainees. Yikes. Who in their right mind think to write dialogue like this for two 40-year-old professional adults to act like that in front of people that they came to train? People who look up to them as specialists at what they do …..

Koala Smartass: How long have you been watching this show?

718-50

  • If I would see blood on an open back door in my house, I will not tell my colleague over the phone, “I will call you back” – I will tell him, “THERE IS BLOOD IN MY HOUSE! I need to check it out. Hold the line.”

Koala Smartass: You are not STEVE.

718-69He is just gorgeous! Tongue smiley 22

  • I just wonder what Steve and Sang Min talked about while waiting for Dr Cunha to get there? It must have taken her a while to get to Steve’s house. Why are they only now discussing what Sang Min is doing there and what happened to him?

Koala Smartass: I’ve got nothing. Maybe Steve was cleaning the house first?

718-66

  • Why did that guy ask Sang Min along to the docks? Does not really make sense to me.

Koala Smartass: I am sure he was just scared to go to the docks alone at night.

718-87

  • This most dangerous guy in the world  Abati arrived the previous night and he had to travel all the way to that remote location in the jungle, but when Danny and Steve get there, the bomb that he came to build was already finished and loaded for transport? Not sure how long it takes to assimilate such a bomb, but it seems rather fast. The terrorists also cut it rather close for his arrival, for building the bomb and the actual event that the Governor would attend the next day. What if the ship that he came on was delayed at sea?

Koala Smartass: You think too much.

718-75

  • They were looking for a terrorist training camp in the jungle and just walk around talking loudly about bucket lists?

Koala Smartass: We have been discussing this very point many times (since Episode 1:05, and many more after that). AND you still think it is strange that a highly trained Navy SEAL operates that way?

Sad smiley 141

718-73

  • Three men capture Steve and Danny and walk with them through the camp. For what purpose? Normally you would escort people to some sort of leader? And why were there suddenly just 2 that made it possible for Steve and Danny to overpower them?

Koala Smartass: So now you are and expert on how terrorist operate, just because you have seen a few movies and shows? And maybe the 3rd guy just needed to pee.

  • The bomb maker must have used some sort of protective gear to work on the bomb, otherwise he is an idiot. A pity Steve did not load that on the truck with them to use when he needed to work on the bomb? Then we wouldn’t have to see the stupidity of the whole battery protection thing.

Koala Smartass: If only our hero had the power of hindsight.

718-butt

  • Okay, a man that does not look like he sustained any injuries stops a police officer along the road telling him that he crashed his car. And there are no signs that a car went over the edge at that place, but the officer just turns his back on him? And on top of that Abati’s description should by now have been forwarded to all officers on the Island (Steve’s words not mine). What was he thinking? Lucky he ‘survived’ meeting Abati.

Koala Smartass: Maybe HPD officers need some better training? From the looks of it that morning, they are scraping the bottom of the barrel by getting two juveniles to do it? #SorrySteve

718-83

  • Abati had less than an hour (50 minutes) on a quad bike to get through an unknown jungle to the road, in a place where there was no roads that morning (according to Danny), hijack a police car (now that was luck), ‘Google’ Sang Min (how did he know the name of the man who he nearly shot on the docks?), get back to the city, leave the car somewhere, get to and overpower Sang Min, believe that Sang Min organised a deal for him to get off the Island, get to the docks and get shot? That is some fast moving!

Koala Smartass: Time and place – we just talked about it last week. This is Five-0.

718-95

  • Did I miss something? How did Five-0 know where Sang Min and Abati will be?

Koala Smartass: You do realise that some of the REAL important stuff land on the editing floor. Luckily those of us who buy the DVD’s get to see the deleted scenes. Some of those scenes even rewrites the whole story. So what is real the story as we see them or the story that we were supposed to see?

*dontknow*

718-98

  • It looks like they wanted to blow up the Governor and HPD HQ, their place of work, but Steve reckons Five-0 and his Ohana were the target? So if I work in a building were the head of state happens to be at the exact time of such an attack, I am the target and not them?

Koala Smartass: You are toying with the sentiments on the show again.

718-105

Not really sure where they are taking Steve’s story at this moment in time? I am a bit disappointed that my expectations after last week were not met. Not even to mention that we last heard a gunshot and not even one word spoken about it this time. Will Steve’s story be over by the end of the next 7 episodes, or will it move on to a new chapter ………?

And that was Steve’s  story for:

  1. Very MacGyverish and I am not a fan of that show so far. This one was a disappointment even to me 😔. PL loves the CGI stuff and it leaves me flat every time. Maybe that’s why Jeff is leaving the show. Thank God for pretty Steve. Thanks for the pics.

I really wondered why Jeff is leaving. Plus I’ve not seen Lenkov say anything about it, or thanking Jeff, but maybe I just missed it. I’ve quit following Peter on Twitter because I’m sick of his political posts. I wonder if Jeff really did object to the direction the show is taking?

May I say that while watching this episode I was not concerned about gaps in the story line or unrealistic timeliness. All I was thinking was, “Damn, Alex looks good! He’s getting his guns back, and his neck?? and his……” Need I say more!

AMEN TO THAT! I was way too busy checking out his hands, forearms, neck and back and that fine ass of his! Is it just me or does he just keep getting better looking every week?

Yeah, me too and I love when Steve improvises and shows some ingenuity! The only plot hole that irritated me was the “no roads in and no roads out.” If true, how did they get the truck in there and how where the terrorists gonna drive it to the palace? I think that was just an excuse to have the parachuting scene. Also, the arguing in front the class was stupid, arguing when they are alone is one thing; but doing it front of strangers in public is too much.

    • It is great to see how gorgeous Alex is, but I would much rather watch the show for Alex’s looks as well as a good story. 😦

I think there really was some good stuff in this episode but the beneath-contempt juvenile and psycho-pathetic behavior from Danno just ruined the whole thing for me. McG was gorgeous and brilliant and fortunately (mostly) took the high road but unfortunately did sink down to Danno’s whiny kindergarten level a time or two.

I am just done with this partnership. I won’t watch this ep again. And I’m this close to ditching Show altogether. I love Alex but PLenkov is making a farce of our guy’s talent. For whatever nefarious motives of his own.

    • I will always watch but I find myself doing other things and half paying attention sometimes. But, this episode was a “buddy” episode so I watched. But, I agree, I am over the Danny vs Steve childish behavior and there is no cohesive storytelling with this show and I let that go 2 years ago so now I just watch for Alex.

Agree about Plenkov. Is he to end this show the bad Way?

What a great job of showing us the many wonderful sides of Alex! He looked especially hot in this episode, and the crotch and butt shots made him even hotter! Oh my!

I agree with all your points. I could not believe the writers had two 40 year old men in front of a group of police trainees, arguing over something stupid like little kids. Also, from where are these McDanno folks getting the notion of this great passion between Danny and Steve? Because Scott Caan plays Danny like he freaking hates Steve. There’s zero affection shown on his part. He murmurs his lines in this fake Jersey accent and shows no emotion whatsoever. He’s bitter and argumentative and juvenile. Why would Steve be attracted to THAT? Not to mention that Scott is not aging well. There’s nothing left of the cute surfer boy from 2010. And what happened to Alicia shooting Dr. Gray? Why was that not addressed? And why is Sang Min no longer in prison? How did he get into McGarrett’s house, which should be a fortress but apparently is easy for other people to get into? Why was that explosion necessary at the beginning? Their CGI is really not up to par. And why don’t the team’s spouses/girlfriends ever attend these group dinners? I mean, I KNOW why–the actors are not available and are in LA. But it looks so weird! I’m also wondering if the restaurant thing is a way to write Scott out of the show.

    • Because Scott Caan plays Danny like he freaking hates Steve. <- Yes, this is exactly what I get from his acting too. For years now. He is an actor, he could soften his lines. It is his choice how to say i.e. "You're a jerk". You can say something with a 'twinkle in your eye' like Alex did in 6.25. But Mr. Caan doesn't do it and I don't get why. Me not liking Danny has a lot to do with his portrayal of Danny. That is sad.

Not only were the girlfriends not present, but what about Adam or Lou’s wife? Also, am I the only one wondering why this dinner was at Steve’s house? Danny has a perfectly fine house now, complete with a full kitchen. Why didn’t he host this Italian feast in in his own home?

  6. Ok, let’s forget the part that sucked a lot of fun out of this epi – at least for me – and focus on the rest. Let’s focus on Steve, you know, the guy who got the job done. I love this flashing into action, thinking in a matter of seconds, creative, problem solving SEAL. And Alex played him brilliantly. Never overacting, but realistic and convincing. Steve is real! Alex portrays him top notch. I loved every minute of it. The average human being has 26 facial muscles. I think Alex has 293689402926.
Without the annoying part it was a really great episode. Illogicalness and inaccuracy? Yep. As always. But witnessing Alex making Steve real is a joy to watch. It is the thing that makes me come back every week.

    • I agree. Alex has 293689402926 facial muscles instead of 26, and he knows how to use them all.

    • I kind of liked the episode when I first watched it, although I had many real life distractions while I was doing so. But the second and third time I started feeling more and more annoyed at the whole situation.
There was too much forced issues in the dialogue for me the whole time. Trying to sell us hard on this special bond between Danny and Steve. Something that you should feel as natural, they what to dialogue into existence – if that makes any sense.
I had the same feeling with the liver donation.
Even the relationship between Steve and Sang Min feels more natural to me at this stage.

      • It’s funny because for me it was the other way round. The first time I was superdannoyed. Like really really angry. But then I said to myself “Damn, Alex is doing a pretty good job here. Enjoy, you stupid woman.” And what can I say, I focused on Steve and it worked.

        • For me it was the forced neediness from Steve towards Danny, that annoyed me the most.
Alex was great as usual. I am just scared for the direction the show is taking. It started in the season 6 finale. Forcing this bond between Steve and Danny artificially with a shared liver.
Like I said in other comments, trying to make something happen that does not come naturally in the show. Things like Lou and Steve’s friendship for instance. It is just there – no script needed.

          • Boo, you’ve said the forbidden word. Don’t deLIVER please. Only when Steve is LIVERied.
Oh, and just thinking about Steve and Lou. I love those two working together. 4.08 is one of my all time favorites. They were so good together. Lou was annoyed but not annoying. That was refreshing and fun to watch.

And what about the Christmas Tree epi? Doesn’t exist in my world.

I loved the episode it was great when Steve & Danny bickering it’s cute. It’s just a TV show every drama needs some comedy don’t you think? I agree that Danny whines to much but I think it’s cute. Remember it’s just a TV show.

We’re all aware it’s a tv Show. We’re also quite aware the writers think this is funny…and that some fans do. Many of us don’t think it’s funny when it goes too far, grows too mean-spirited, gets too personal. This ep did all that. Several eps in the last few years have done. The writers need to work harder to create snappy convo and Scott should make some effort to develop a facial expression that doesn’t suggest chronic constipation. 😉
