Is this – Everything We Know About McGarrett’s Past? #H50

Today is the 10th of March and of course that means it is (the fictional character) Steve McGarrett’s birthday …….

:bday5:

(Please to not confuse it with Alex’s birthday, which of course is on 24 August)

You can treat yourself with some pretty stuff that we have posted on previous years’ old birthday posts:

2013: HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEVE!

2015: Happy Birthday Commander Steve McGarrett – How old are you today?

And this is what we have for this year …….

This tweet from the CBS Hawaii Five-0 site was made yesterday:

In the post on the CBS site, this is what they listed as Everything we know about Steve’s past‘ ……….

1) He’s the oldest of two children.

Steve is the son of John McGarrett and Doris McGarrett, and older brother of Mary Ann McGarrett. He was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii.

2) He was named after his grandfather.

Steve’s grandfather, Steven McGarret, was a Navy ensign on the battleship USS Arizona and was killed on December 7, 1941 in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

3) His mom faked her own death.

Steve believed his mother, a former CIA agent named Doris, died in a car accident when he was a teenager. It was later revealed that she faked her death in a car bombing and spent the next twenty years in hiding. He discovered in Season 2 that she went by the codename Shelburne.

4) His father was investigating the Yakuza and Hiro Noshimuri.

Steve’s father’s involvement with Yakuza eventually led to him being taken hostage by Victor Hesse—and shot. It was later revealed his death was order by Wo Fat.

5) He used to play guitar.

While Steve is certainly more the military type than the rockstar, he admitted on “Kuka’awale (Stakeout)” (Season 5, Episode 17) that he played the guitar until high school.

6) He attended the U.S. Naval Academy.

Steve graduated at the top of his class from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

7) He was a Navy SEAL.

Steve served for six years (four years in Afghanistan) before transferring to the Naval Intelligence Corps. He had been pursuing terrorists Victor Hesse and Anton Hesse for five years.

8) He’s a decorated war veteran.

Steve has received numerous medals, including a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Navy Expert Rifleman award.

9) He speaks multiple languages.

During Steve’s time abroad he learned to speak Mandarin and Japanese. He’s also fluent in Hawaiian and conversational in Korean.

10 ) He didn’t talk to his sister for 10 years.

Steve and his sister, Mary, had a troubled relationship after the supposed death of their mother. They didn’t speak for a decade, but have since made up and now see each other more frequently.

11) His emergency contact is Danny.

They may bicker often, but it was revealed on “Nānahu (Embers)” (Season 5, Episode 16) that Steve put Danny “Danno” Williams down as his emergency contact.

This was some interesting reading about Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett. Is there anything important that we know about him that you think should have been added? And how do you feel about the 11 facts that they have listed here?

  • My first question would be – what are they talking about in #11? I can understand that Danny might be Steve’s emergency contact, because without any family on the island, and as his partner at work, Danny would be the closest connection to him to be contacted. What I do not understand is where there they got that from in that episode? Did I miss something there somewhere? And is it really part of Steve’s past?

Happy Birthday Commander!

They left out Cath, Uncle Joe, Aunt Deb &Joanie, FREDDIE and their meaning and relationships to him! They also failed to note why McG left the SEALs and even started 5-0.

And the Danno emergency contact is more the present than his past…so an outlier on the list, IMO. 😉

There are still things in his last we don’t know…wish we would get more McG centric eps and more backstory!

    • Yes Grace, the Danny thing looked a bit “forced”. As if they needed to say something about the “bromance” to make it important or something.
So much of Steve’s past is actually still a mystery, because most of it has not been resolved (AND at the rate they go, most probably never will be)
It is truly sad that the story lost focus from its main character – in my book that is a no-no. 😥
And yes the story is about Steve and Five-0 and they do not even mention how that all started ……

  3. A Steve centered or even better a SEAL episode would be heaven.
What else do we know about his past?
Well he had a girlfriend named Jenny Feldman and the movie “Chucky” was his modus operandi ;-).
He learned Pashto but it’s a little rusty by now.
As a SEAL he worked ‘the other side’.
He had a camouflage pj as a child.
He was a quarterback and beat all of Chin’s records.
I am sure there’s much more we know…

  6. “Their” recount of his past doesn’t even scratch the surface of our guy.
And no, I have NO idea how they got the emergency contact from that episode. Very strange.
And I sure hope we will learn some more fact about him soon, hopefully in a SEAL-episode. That would be a dream come true.
    Thanks for this post. 🙂

  7. Happy Birthday Steve!!
While Alex may be the lead in H5-0, it still has an ensemble cast. I, like most of you, would prefer Alex/Steve be front & center in every episode of the show! But the reality is that we get to see all of the cast and their characters’ lives too. It’s necessary for the show to show them as a team, to bring out the whole Ohana vibe. I hope we get some resolution on old story lines, especially those with Doris & Catherine, but from what I’ve read about the original H5-0 series, Wo Fat wasn’t caught until the final episode of the series. Given that we don’t have Wo Fat any longer, it just could be that some of these story ‘threads’ won’t be finalized until the show is in it’s final episodes.

  8. Happy birthday to my favorite fictional/TV character! Steve McGarrett – an amazing, driven, kind, complex, interesting, lovable character. I wish we all can watch more of him and stories around him. He is the H50! Without Steve, the show and other characters miss the vibe, intensity and the action.

A buttercream cake on the way to Commander’s office!

I have always been curious about this and It may be known and I have just missed it. Its’ known Steve was raised in Hawaii, but was he born there? If not, where was he born?
