The Steve McGarrett Story – No # 105 (McFixit )

We continue our story from here

Wow, I can’t believe how much I ‘struggled’ with this episode and against better judgement I will go a bit personal in this. Actually I should have written this without looking at and “hearing”what anybody else had to say about it. I should have just stayed on the surface of it and kept with my feeling that this was just too much sentimental stuff thrown into a procedural like this. I might have saved myself some ‘nightmares’ – and by that I mean real memories haunting my thoughts, as I tried to sleep last night…..

Even more so than with other episodes, there are so many different views on every part of this episode. Last night I realised once again, how we all see it from and through our own experiences. Alex fans, think Steve is right to obsess about his stolen car, Scott Caan fans (who also mostly seem to be McDanno shippers as well), think Danny was right to obsess about his daughter’s security. Some neutral fans, who mostly struggle to find anything wrong with the show, try to justify them both. 😀

Maybe what actually happened, like the loss of the car is more real to Steve, than what could have happened, because he left Gracie alone for a few minutes? Is it really that bad for a 12-year-old to be alone for a few minutes in a regular suburban street in Honolulu? And maybe for myself, also because I watch for Alex and Steve and it makes me biased, but more so because I have also been a victim of grand theft auto, I fully understand Steve’s feelings.

For some reason one feels personally violated when somebody else takes your stuff. But even with that, each one of us live through it differently. Mine was not my dad’s vintage car but my own which I adored (and thankfully got back). For most of us who drive a lot, your car is an extension of yourself, part of you so to speak. Granted, Steve’s car was also not taken from him at gun point, like mine was, because I was carjacked. But trust me the anger and frustration about it is real, surely for him as well.

But let’s get back to Steve’s overall story…..

Despite all the Steve sentiment, Alex Steve running in shorts, and Alex Steve just being his gorgeous self, nothing in this episode told me anything new about any progress in Steve’s story. All I know is that one of the best forms of therapy for your own trauma, is helping others. And in my eyes that is one of the golden rules in life, and Steve is doing it very well. Steve is dealing with his own problems and bad experiences and pain, by helping others heal from theirs.

Steve forcing the thief to help him repair the car, might also be some good therapy for them both. The young boy learning that building something is much more satisfying than breaking it apart. And that the value of something is much more that the individual parts of it. Steve on the other hand is creating himself the chance to heal the trauma of losing parts of the car and with it the memories (For my own therapy, I washed and cleaned every inch of my car myself, after I got it back and with that clearing away the memories that somebody took it from me – it helped).

While you are watching the beautiful pictures of Steve, that Paula once again captured for us, I’ll just throw around some general thoughts………

The feeling I got while watching this episode, was that the writers went to watch some old Season 1 & 2 episodes and decided they needed to use some of that old stuff again……… Science guy Steve, Max the savant playing his piano, Danny nagging in Steve’s ears because he is so sentimental over anything related to his father, Danny still calling Steve’s passion project, memory of his dad’s car, a piece of junk like he did in Epi 122,  Steve preventing others from stepping on booby traps, etc.

Is it good? Is it bad? Or is it maybe just a little bit if that familiar stuff a little too late to try and get back to the roots and the feelings that brought the regular fans to the show in the first place? Should a show like this, move forward or rehash the old stuff?

Paul Delano – why bother with him at all? Are they setting something up for an episode in future? Or did they just showcase him again to highlight the suffering and nightmare he and his family caused Chin? Not only did Frank kill Malia, but Chin also killed him (more or less in cold blood) and then Paul planted Chin in jail in a real life nightmare. Was it all just for the connection with Samantha’s nightmares?

Hawaii is an interesting place. Do people really have time to go fishing before they go to work? Just wondering about that – trivial I know, but just wondering. 😀

Where has all the humour gone? Lines that are supposed to be funny are just plain nasty for me in this episode (even maybe for a while now – or maybe it’s always been that way?) It is not even black humour (which I like and can appreciate), but just nasty.

  • Chin and Kono throwing around nasty death comments (revenge talk) directed at Paul Delano, in front of Grace.
  • Danny being snarky towards Max, after he said he also received the Presidential Medal. Danny’s words, “Let’s call Ripley’s.” That was pure nastiness. To me that was like bullying the nerd kid on the playground!

Santa might bring new gifts (toys) every year, but Steve McGarrett repairs the broken “forgotten” ones, continuously? 😀

I have to agree with you. It’s like the writers are unsure of where to go this season. In that, the fans are getting bored with the story lines themselves. I can fully understand the car scene, I had my car damaged when someone tried to break into it. It is an extension of ourselves. The ending I was really put off with, the Shiv in the food line remark and the Cancer remark were way out of line. Yes, Even the line from Danny on calling Ripley’s. They are adding extra episodes this year, and seem to be running out of story lines. Lets’ hope the writers get back on track as it could be a death knell for the series if they lose the audience they have built up to now. We hate having Doris in it, but maybe its time for some more intrigue with her, how about adding Mary in too where Steve has to come to her rescue or have him recalled into the Seals for a stint. Yes, a 12 year old can be left alone for a bit I would think. Danny needs to get more of a life than just Grace.

Wow Foyeur, that might be one of the best recaps you have ever done. First of all I am so sorry that happened to you with your car. I can’t imagine how scary that must have been. Thank you for sharing your story. Ok back to the recap. You are very right about it seeming like a few years ago. I wish the show would go back to being like that all the time. I also wondered if the writers bringing back Delano is setting something up for the future. I hope not. P. S. Great pictures Paula. 😄

    • Thanks Colleen, but to me it’s not a real recap, but only looks like the ramblings of an “old” fool. 😀
Thankfully lots of time has passed since then (7 yrs), but unfortunately when triggered, the memories of a gun stuck is your face stays vividly in ones mind.

I honestly don’t know how to feel about this season. On the one hand, stand alone epis are what I really prefer. On the other hand, not having a continuous storyline arc is troublesome. Was Wo Fat killed off in case the show ends this year? Was he killed off because it was felt it had gone on long enough? I don’t mind that the Wo arc has resolved, but if another arc is begun then that gives me hope for more H50. This whole season is unsettling for me. (sorry about your scary experience Foyeur)

  4. I feel a bit like the odd one out this season.
I’m enjoying it more than I enjoyed Season 3 or 4. I guess it’s down to personal taste.
But the ratings seem to be still pretty good so there must be other fans that enjoy it too.

This season has been disappointing in several ways, but I actually enjoyed this episode except for, as Foyeur put it, the nasty. Danny jerking McG’s chain in his heart’s most sensitive spot, his dead daddy, just seemed horrific to me. McG later dissed Danno’s daddy skills. This is exactly what happens when someone crosses a line. Once Danno went nasty, eventually McG did too. I really wish the writers would stop it…and I totally hate Chin then referencing their “therapy”. Given the year McG has had…losing Cath, finding Wo as a fake bro, and being caught and tortured again, McG needs real therapy not comic BS therapy. I agree…there doesn’t seem to be a “book” for this show anymore, where the writers have a path to an end. Each ep is just dangling out there.

And OMG yes, Grace is old enough to be left in a safe suburban neighborhood for a few minutes! She needs to start learning to be on her own. My kids walked down to our local drug store or their friends’ houses by 12…in another few years the child will go to college. Danno gonna go there with her too? Instead of the nasty, Show coulda made a comic moment over Danno’s glaringly overprotectiveness of, essentially, his young teenage daughter. Writers adrift, I guess. It does make me nervous they know something unfortunate that we do not. 😦

    • Problem is, that the therapy session in episode 501 received tweets like – ‘the best thing ever on H50’. And Alex himself said it was so nice that he thought they should take it further – and I think that is what they are doing.
Clearly Alex is looking for some acting material othe than the procedural stuff to work with and since the writers have no clue how to write his story with any substance anymore, this is the angle they are taking. Make the carguments nasty and not funny anymore and go and see a shrink.
……..I have deleted the rest of my comment and will stop now, before I write something I might regret ‘saying’ out loud. 🙂

Hee! I hear ya, babe. Yes, I have seen several folks ponder, and I agree, that Show is now sailing without direction…whatever long range plans they had in their book, they’ve either been scrapped or already accomplished, So yes, even more than usual, they seem to be taking cues from the most frenetic and flattering Twitter reactions rather than their own artistic vision. There seemed to be some sea change about a year ago, where they went off route and have been sailing without a map ever since. That sense that PL had a plan all the way to the end is long gone. But if he really only had a plan thru to half of S4, that seems short sighted given the 6 or 7 year contracts they signed. Sigh. I am afraid the enduring emotional and critical legacy of this show will eventually be the lament of what it could have been.

But it’s gone 5 seasons, often over rocky shoals, so while it won’t leave any artitistic legacy, hopefully it will get Alex some bigger and better things…and it got him a wife and family, so there’s a win right there!

  6. Foyeur I am so sorry you had to go through that, how terrifying 😦
I thought Chin making light of their therapy was funny buy I also thought Danny overreacted about Grace and he knows how sentimental Steve is about the car because of his father so that made no sense. Maybe whoever is writing has no idea of the history of the show? Who knows.

I think they are setting something up for Delano, at least I hope it wasn’t random. Think about it Danny and Chin both murdered someone, eventually it is going to come back on them. I stay away from spoilers so I have no clue and don’t want to know. I like to be surprised. 🙂

This season is not better or worse for me then usual. By the time the Friday work week is over, I am happy to be able to watch Alex work.

  7. Oh what a scary experience FOYeur! We are not 5-0 and used to getting guns shoved in our face every day! In real life this is horrific and terrifying.
I liked this epi. Much. For me it was one of the best this season. They gave Alex a lot to work with, and he did it perfectly. I am pretty sure he loved filming this episode too. Angry, sad, dissappointed, emotional and caring. And Steve the science guy! Him Saying “vintage automobile survival kit” as it would be totally normal to have something like that in the trunk of a classic car, makes me giggle all the time.
What I didn’t like was Danny. He was downright nasty. To Steve and to Max too. There is no way someone can convince me that this man would have friends in RL. He is so insensitive and unendearing (is that a word?) that I am not interested in what will happen to him at all. 😦
