The Steve McGarrett Story – No #103

We continue our story from here

There is not a lot happening in the progress of Steve’s story during this episode, so I will just share a few of my random thoughts……

When I saw the promo pictures for this episode, I thought “Oh yeah, some fun!”. I thought Steve and Ellie were going to be seen training together, while in fact that picture was just Alex, showing Mirrah how to move during the boxing scene. 😦

Alex & MirrahI know that the show needs to create some “away from work” moments, that gives the team personal lives. I love it, because it gives them deeper character. But I must admit the “boxing” (sparring) workout between Steve and Ellie did not do it for me. Maybe it is because I am a big sports fan, but not a big boxing fan. And on top of that, men hitting women for fun, is not really my scene. It kind of feels like Season 5  Steve is an alternate universe Steve and that somewhere along the line we will all wake up to be reunited with the character we know and love. 😥

Back to Steve’s story……..

So Steve’s surrogate sister Ellie wants to set him up for a date with one of her drop-dead gorgeous friends, Jes.

This must surely mean something – here is a selection of choices:

  1. Ellie doesn’t like boys herself? (Maybe H5-0 is developing their first gay character?)
  2. Ellie is already involved with another man. (That would be an interesting twist)
  3. Ellie sees Steve purely as a brother. ( John was a surrogate dad to her, and she therefore sees Steve as a brother)
  4. Ellie and John ended up being more than just friends to each other before he died. (She sees Steve as her lover’s son and not really as boyfriend material. 😀 )
  5. Ellie is cunning and is testing the water to see where Steve’s mind is at, about relationships. (Is he ready to move on to her?)

Maybe we should give y’all a chance to say what you think it is:

As usual the Steve-pretty and Alex being Steve, made it all worth while to watch. I hope you enjoy all the gorgeous Steve pictures Paula made for us to enjoy! 😛

Okay, then there is something else that puzzled me. Paddy Fitzgerald. I am kind of sure I hear Danny saying Paddy (and not Patty) twice and Steve says it once. I always thought Paddy is a male name. Did Danny’s aunt set him up on a date with a man? Is that why he calls it, “A colossal mistake”? Did Danny’s family think he is gay? 😀

Some Steve trivia….

If anybody wondered what I meant in our New Year´s post about the shirts – this is what I meant:

  • Steve is wearing his brown fuddy-duddy shirt, then he and Danny puts on Kevlar and drive to investigate the suspect´s house. For that he puts on his blue T-Shirt under his Kevlar. When they return to the office he changes back into the brown shirt. In ‘real life’ and when he is in a hurry – would he have time to change shirts every time he needs to put on Kevlar?
  • And if he does have to change his shirts – why not show it to us sometimes? We have to look at Mindy’s cleavage and see Kono in her skimpy outfits – why not the men? It brightens up the crappiest stories, if we see some skin (by Steve) once in a while. As I have said so many times before – this is Hawaii! Use all the ‘talents’ at your disposal. 😛

510-collage-shirts

I liked that they tried something different with the old school noir narrative – connected and combined with an old school detective in the story. One of my first memorable experiences of this style of story telling, was Warren Beatty’s ‘Dick Tracy‘ in 1990. And of course both William Forsythe (who plays Harry in this episode) and James Caan, were members of the star-studded cast in that movie.

Harry: No matter what they tell you, time doesn’t heal all wounds. When someone you love is ripped from your life, that scar stays with you forever. But the one bright light in all the darkness, is knowing that men like Steve McGarrett is out there. Making sure the good guys always come out on top.

Some further thoughts about the episode itself and Hawaii Five- in general.

  • I found it a good solid procedural episode. The stuff that Hawaii Five-o is made of. One of the better episode of Season 5. But there were a few things that boggled my mind….
  • Why did the ME not realise the time of death scenario before Danny told her? She is the one informing him about the time of death in both cases, why did she not realise that the guy died before the girl?
  • I really get the feeling that once again (like it was with Cath) that as soon as Grover joined the Five-0 team, there are no more real stories for him? 😦
  • How did Steve know that the girlfriend, Erica Young, served at a ‘100 miles an hour‘? Not sure if I missed something somewhere?
  • Maybe I have ‘exceptionally’ good hearing 😀 , but I heard that it was a dripping tap, even before they isolated the sound. 🙂

These were just a few of the things I giggled about, while enjoying Alex………..

  1. I think Ellie see Steve as a brother but I am not sure how he sees her because he kind of looks at her like he is into her. I enjoyed this episode as well even though there was no character stories to move stuff along but I read an interview, with Lenkov, recently and I hold out hope that things will be wrapped up because while I am hoping for a season 6 because of Alex I am not feeling to secure about its renewal.
On a side note, over the holidays I re-watched Moonlight and watched the last episode right before the new H50 episode and Steve just does not compare to Mick. Mick was this tough, really sensitive/vulnerable soul and Alex played him so beautifully which is why Alex became such a fan favorite imo. I love Steve but because of the writing we just never see enough of his soft side, he is just too guarded.

    • Interesting for myself is my memories about the beginning days of following Alex’s carreer. I was about halfway into S1 of Hawaii Five-0, when I got my Moonlight DVD’s – which I watched in 2 days over a weekend. My words after the first day was, “What have they done to Alex to take away this full rounded character Mick, that he portrays so wonderfully, from him?”
Mick definitely made me fall for Alex. I would have surely moved on and not bother with my fangirling, if Mick did not exist, I think.

      • My first episode of H50, when I 1st discovered Alex, was the Aloha girls, when Steve and the little girl were kidnapped in the woods, Steve was very sensitive in that episode to the little girl, Steve was kind of Mick like even though I didn’t know Mick existed yet. I agree it is too bad we only got one season of Mick but the last episode was very satisfying as a viewer.

Interesting thoughts about Ellie. Hmm, gay. I think it would be a great turn of events for a character but don’t honestly feel PL has the balls to go that route, could be somewhat controversial with the older female viewers. Even if he says no, PL seems to be making her a male version of Steve. fishing, boxing, fixing cars. I’m not saying women don’t have those interests but… Don’t any of the women on 5-0 like mani/pedis, spas/massages, SHOPPING, haircuts?? I guess no girly girls here.

I feel a lot of the main cast has been underused so far this season. Kono and Chin have been mia and Grover as well. Maybe if they got rid of some of the cast of thousands (read Pua for one) who take up screen time there’d be more time for the main guys.

I did like this episode a lot, Steve was front and center and was the Steve we love and even Danny wasn’t abrasive and obnoxious. I loved the VoiceOver (I miss Moonlight and Mick desperately) and hope Harry makes another appearance. He was a great asset to them. It was different and well written. Here’s hoping for more of the same.

My last thought (sorry it’s so long) is regarding Steve and his shirts. He might have the blue t-shirt on under whatever he’s wearing and just takes it off when he puts on his vest. Since we can’t get shirtless from him, at least seeing his guns is almost the next best thing. (Btw, I knew it was water dropping too and there might have been a screen registering the speed of the balls being lobbed on the court.) 😉

    • * Well all the girls always look well groomed, so they must be into the girly stuff as well. That might be a refreshing idea…. murder at the hair salon, or the spa or the dressing room in a boutique… 🙂
      * See my thoughts to Visage about ML.
      * No comment is ever to long.
      * And with the T-shirts – I do not think there is space for them under the present shirts – there was when he was still wearing the over-shirts.
      * I had a look at that tennis scene again. Looked all around the court as they will moving around, but could not see and screens or monitors – maybe Steve’s super-power is eye sight like a radar gun, measuring speed 😆

LOL!! Very few women who are just “club players” serve at 100 mph. In fact, not all women pros can serve at 100 mph and almost none consistently. So a bizarre line of dialog…and her pitty-pat playing and lack of sweat did not mark that chick as a great player. Hee! 😆

I too think a gay character would be awesome! I would totally vote for that. But gay or straight, Ellie already has more balls than PL…so not gonna happen. 🙄

  4. Letting my mind wander about Steve and Ellie. Just maybe….

Steve is taking his time with the Cath situation. He knows she isn’t coming back but has been there before with her when she was deployed in the Navy.

He’s in no hurry – why? Steve knows he has to deal with a lot of issues.
    1. Doris is alive
    2. Doris is CIA
    3. Doris cared for WoFat as a child and then WoFat tortured Steve. I loved your Mom so I’m torturing you and I killed your father. Hmmm a lot to deal with I would say.
    4. Steve killed WoFat and Danny killed Reyes who killed his brother. A lot to deal with again.
    5. Steve has trouble sleeping and dealing with Freddy’s brutal murder after leaving him behind.
    6. Ellie seems normal. Steve doesn’t know much about normal anymore.
    7. He’s found someone to talk to besides Danny or Grover.
    8. It’s TV, they need a damsel in distress so Ellie offers some new blood to be in peril.

    • I agree that is A LOT to deal with. I don’t know if we will find out more about Ellie and her “preferences” but I am curious (maybe it’s just me) but does every women say her friend(s) are drop dead gorgeous…when making an intro to a man? I was unsure about that. Frankly I don’t care about her “preferences” and I am glad the writers are having him take it slow. I do hope we get a few more seasons or at least one that will wrap things up especially if Steve can get some closure with the Doris/Wo-Fat issue.

    • Great ideas Brenda
But in my mind there is only one simple explanation for Steve wanting to take some time before he moves on ….. The writers are writing him that way, because they want to keep ALL the ships “happy” and hooked. 😦

      • I will let it be known right here right now if Ellie is the latest love interest of Steve I will NEVER forgive the writers for anything ever again. He doesn’t need a love interest and I’m actually enjoying this interaction as it stands now. To be honest this seems more like a brother sister kinda relationship more than nothing else.

  6. I have been a big fan since the beginning and I also love Alex. But I have decided that Peter and the writers do not want another season. Except for 1 episode I have not enjoyed one episode this year.

    • It is actually very sad to hear it from you Carol, because you are always the positve one. And even sadder is the fact that I think your thinking is a reflection of a lot of the die-hard fans of the show. 😥
What might be even worse is that the people that have any connection with the show runners and writers, keep telling them how wonderful this season is. And how much better it is than last season.
I have decided to just marvel in Alex’s talent and beauty……and hope that he will be rewarded for his dedication and talent by some class act writer somewhere, one day ……soon.

  7. Like you, when i saw the promo pics of Alex and Mirrah in the ring, i thought that Steve would teach Ellie some boxing and self defence moves, so was awkward the way they show us the boxing scene. I never imagine Steve doing it with a woman for fun/workout. I continue to not understand why writers chose to change their writing of Steve this season (My theory is that they tried the Wo Fat’s drugs on themselves). Your question about Ellie is very interesting. More than Ellie testing Steve’s mind about new relationship is Mr. PL testing the audience again – too fast, now slower a bit. Personally i would like a new twist and Ellie be gay. It would a bold and refresh story for a H50 character. This episode’s promo was so boring (and 5.09 was very bad) that my expectations about 5.10 were very low, so was a very nice surprise. I enjoyed this episode.
Thank you for continue these posts. I really appreciate it. And combined with Paula’s pics (and gifs) is perfect.

I second everything you said! Agree with Carol too…I think they writers have given up. There is just no other way to explain such shoddy shoddy character-writing and plots this season. So like Foyeur, I am hoping Mr. O will have something extraordinary lined up soon.

      • Or it will be very sad, boring and frustrating to watch the rest of the season. I’m sorry but they have a group of talented actors that deserve more interesting and challenging stories. They prove that everytime when they got the chance, the characters shine and the fans love it.

i wasn’t drawn into this episode much, but now that i read your detail questions, i have a reason to go back and pay more attention. I had a neutral reaction as i did not see that this episode moved any of the plotlines for the characters forward. It could have been a stand alone episode during any season. The boxing scene came out of left field for me; i think it is the writers testing the waters with potential “ships” for Steve. I was very surprised at the social media reaction to this episode. people were a lot more excited about it than i was. Thanks for the review. Like i said – it gives me a reason to rewatch and pay more attention.

I found this episode terribly boring–I’ve been hanging in there, but when I watched this one I just didn’t care anymore. Couldn’t stand Harry, and everyone else on the H50 team must have been on vacation, because they were barely there. I know Alex doesn’t watch the show because he doesn’t like to watch himself (the only person on earth who feels that way), and I do understand that, but I think it’s time he did watch to see what they’ve done to show this season (horrible). I fear that this may be the last of H50, which is sad because it started out so well, entertaining and ALEX every week.

Is it time to start lobbying for Alex to replace Daniel Craig? He’d make the perfect Bond now.

I was totally liking Ellie right up to the point where they put her in the boxing ring with Steve. What kind of crazy woman gets in the ring with a man who’s an expert at hand to hand combat? So stupid. What’s funny is that we’ve never seen him do anything like this with Danny or Chin. The guys must be smart enough to avoid doing this with a Navy SEAL!
Anyway, why can’t Steve have a female friend who behaves like a woman? She knew a little bit about the car and she can fish, why isn’t that enough?
