Steve McGarrett – An Officer and a PERFECT Gentleman

Danny’s ex-partner from Jersey is in town. Because of his corruption, Danny was the prosecution’s star witness and had to testify against him. He was put away for 10 years. He is out and he wants to take revenge on Danny, by destroying his loved ones. He kidnaps Grace and forces Danny to shoot and kill Stan.

The team catches up with them just as Danny shoots Stan in the shoulder, to pretend as if he is killing him. The Team arrests Rick and Danny shoots him in the leg and forces him to tell them where he is keeping Grace hostage.

Alex O’Loughlin and Fred Fisher – a radio interview with Dave Lawrence from Helping Hands

Friday afternoon, 5 September 2014 on Hawaii Public Radio

Dave: Alex, what brings you to the table?

Alex: Well, thanks for having me first of all. ALS is something that is kind of pretty up close and personal for me. My wife’s mother passed of ALS.

Seeing how it affected my in-laws and my wife. And also strangely enough, one of my close friends lost his father last Monday.

Dave: Alex, I was reading a little about you. I had read that your mom was a nurse.

I was wondering if her background in that role has brought to bear any kind of sense of responsibility for others or imperative to give back.

Alex: I’m really glad that you mention that Dave. My mom was a nurse. She was a great nurse. She was a community nurse in Australia. I remember vividly sick days, if I had a little cold or something and wasn’t going to school or perhaps on a weekend, I would do rounds with her.

Doing house calls for people who couldn’t leave their houses, or for whom it was extremely difficult to leave their house. So this is people who suffered from paraplegia, quadriplegia, Cerebral Palsy and of course Lou Gehrig’s disease, as it was known back then.

I met all these men and women and I got to know and love a few of them as well. And that was really important for me, because I got to see past that really quickly to the people. To get to know them and to become friends and really get to love some of them.

I remember my friend Michael Lanagan, he must have been about mid-30’s I guess, while I was like 5. I remember his house was all set up and he had ramps and he was quadriplegic. He had handles and a special bed.

What I remember so clearly, even at such a young age, looking at the situation and knowing that if my mom was not there that he’d be in trouble, you know, if somebody else wasn’t there, there was a lot to his life. And I was profoundly affected by that.

Dave: I think it is a great tribute to your mom, that all those time that she took you, that you never forgot it. And that you were able to incorporate that in your life about giving back.

Alex: That’s a really important piece, is that we will keep every dollar that we earn and raise here in the Hawaii Island to create care facilities that don’t exist.

Dave: And Alex O’Loughlin from Hawaii Five-0, please as well stay in touch and any time you want to support a cause and help out the disabled or others in need, I hope you’d come on this Helping Hands segment and let us help spread the word. I do appreciate your time.

Young Steve: Hey, I just saw uncle Joe leaving. What’s going on?

John: Sit down son. We need to talk. I’m sending you and your sister back to the mainland. You’re leaving tomorrow.

Young Steve: What?

John: Joe got you into the Army-Navy Academy. Mary is going to stay with Aunt Deb. So you guys will only be a few hours away from each other.

Young Steve: I just started junior year. Why are you doing this?

John: It’s not safe for you here anymore. You have to go now.

Young Steve: You’re gonna stay?

John: I can’t leave. I still have work to do here.

Young Steve: You know what? Mom would’ve never sent us away.

John: Yeah, well. Your mother is gone, okay? Now it’s just me. Listen, I ……. Steve, in a couple of years, you’re gonna be 18. And pretty soon  you’re gonna need to decide what kind of man you are.

Young Steve: What kind of man are you? You’re breaking up our family?

John: I’m the kind of man that can’t walk away from a fight. My first responsiblity  is not my safety, it’s yours. Now you don’t have to like it. I just hope someday you can understand. And Steve…… you may not hear from me for a while. If anything happens, you can always trust your uncle Joe.

With the comments on Episode 112 Lena asked me about the timeline of when Steve and Mary were sent away and how soon after Doris’s “death” it happened. I thought that because Mary said, “I last saw you at mother’s funeral”, that it was within the first weeks of her death. But from this conversation above, it seems like they stayed for a few months. Doris died on 19 April 1992, and if I understand correctly school for the new school year in Hawaii, starts in August – so this must have been in August, about 4 months after her death)

But let us get back to Steve’s story……

Steve follows Joe

Joe: I made you three blocks ago. Why are you following me?

Steve: I can help you find Shelburne.

Joe: No you can’t.

Steve: You’re not gonna last long by yourself. Yakuza’s got a price on your head.

Joe: You expected me to run and hide?

Steve: You know what Joe, you’re stubborn, okay. But you’re not stupid. Adam Noshimuri thinks you killed his father. So long as he believes that, you are a target.

Joe: Go home, son.

Steve: Listen to me. You gotta tell Adam his father’s alive.

While walking down a street in the city, Joe nearly becomes the victim of a drive-by shooting. Steve catches up with him at HPD.

Steve: Joe, what happened?

Joe: I didn’t think Adam Noshimuri would take it this far.

Steve: Really? I mean it’s the Yakuza, Joe. They don’t play by any rule book. Innocent people could’ve died.

Joe: I know.

Because Stan is out of town, Danny keeps Rachel company in the hospital, while she is in labour. With some complications she needs a C-section and young Charles William Edwards is born.

That evening Steve arranges a meeting with Adam. They tell Adam the truth about Joe helping Hiro to fake his death. Joe puts a call through to Hiro in order to convince Adam.

Adam: I don’t understand. Why?

Joe: Old Chinese proverb: ‘The enemy of my enemy is my friend’. Our mutual enemy is WoFat.

Adam: I don’t give a damn about him.

Steve: Well, you should, because he kills anyone who crosses him or gets in his way. Your Uncle Koji, his own lieutenant, Victor Hess. You don’t get it, do you? Adam your father went from being a powerful ally to a loose end. He knew it was only a matter of time before WoFat went after him.

Joe: And you. That’s why your father asked me to help him fake his death.

Adam: He should have told me.

Joe: He wanted to. But he knew that that would only put you in jeopardy as well. His fight would become your fight. So he had to make a choice. Tell you the truth, risk your life. Tell you a lie and keep you safe. If you ask me, he chose wisely.

Adam: No, I need to see him. He wouldn’t tell me where he is, but you are going to.

Joe: No, I can’t. I made Hiro a promise. What’s important now is that you proceed as if your father is dead. No one can know he is alive. But quietly we will make inroads into WoFat’s organization, until we find him and kill him.

Steve: We just need to know if you’re in or if you’re out.

After the job is done for the evening, Steve and Joe get some time to talk.

Steve: Yeah, but there is one more thing we need to settle. I’m pretty sure you know what it is.

Joe: Shelburne.

Steve: Don’t you think I deserve to know what the hell is going on?

Joe: Yes. I do.

Steve: Okay. Oh man where are you going?

Joe: You want answers? Come with me.

Steve and Joe go to John McGarrett’s grave.

(I always wondered why Joe specifically chose to tell the story of Shelburne at John’s grave. Did Joe what to have John there as “witness” to the lies he was telling Steve, in order to make it more believable to Steve?)

Steve: I don’t understand.

Joe: Your father was the closest thing I ever had to a brother. You know that?

Steve: He felt the same way about you.

Joe: You remember the day he told you he was sending you away?

Steve: Like it was yesterday, Joe.

Joe: On that day, he made me promise that if anything ever happened to him, I would look after you as if you were my own son. But I broke that promise.

Steve: What are you talking about Joe?

Joe: When your father started his investigation into the Yakuza, he had no idea how far it would go, or how dangerous it would get. It got so that he was so paranoid, he didn’t trust the people he was working with. So he came to me and asked for my help. That’s how Shelburne was born.

Steve: Wait a minute. You telling me Shelburne isn’t a person?

Joe: It’s an alias, a codename we created, to draw attention and fire away from your father’s investigation, to protect you and your sister.

Steve: Okay, all right. Well if it was an investigation into the Yakuza, then why does WoFat  care so much about Shelburne?

Joe: Because Shelburne killed his father.
Steve: And by Shelburne, you mean my father?

Joe: No, it was me. I killed him.

Steve: What happened? Who was he?

Joe: None of that matters now. What’s past is past. The one thing I regret is that I caused you all this trouble. I promised to protect you from all this, and I didn’t. All that I did, by coming back here, was make it worse. And that’s why I have to leave.

 We have never heard how John and Joe became friends. In Episode 201 Steve and Joe had this conversation:

Joe: Are you okay son? Been awful quiet since we left Mokoto’s. What’s on your mind?

Steve: I was only 15 years old when my father sent me away.

Joe: He did that to protect you.

Steve: I know, I know. But then I joined the service. I got deployed. I didn’t get a lot of time to spend with him as an adult. And now I realise there’s all this stuff about him that I never knew. He had all these secrets and it bugs me.

Joe: Well when this is over , maybe we can shed some light on those secrets.

Steve: Maybe we shouldn’t

Joe: But why?

Steve: WoFat warned me not to dig into my family’s past. He said I might not like what I find. What did he mean by that?

Joe: Listen son, you may not have known your father, but he knew you. When you were training at Coronado, he called to check in with me every week, to see how you were doing. And as for when you were younger, well trust me, that was as hard on him as it was on you. In the 34 years  I knew your father, I saw him cry twice: At your mother’s funeral, and the day he sent you away. He was a good man, and there is no reason to think otherwise.

• From this conversation, it seems that John and Joe only knew each other from the time Steve was born. How did they meet? What is their connection?
• We have never gotten an answer of how involved Joe was with Doris and if he knew about her faking her death. If he knew, he was the most awful friend to both John and Doris, if he allowed John to abandon his children like he did. Doris faked her death to protect them, not to make their lives worse. I doubt that she thought John would send the kids away, and would have instructed Joe not to allow it. With the terrible heartache that followed that decision – I would think that witness protection would have been a far better option to her.
• For me personally, the only way that Joe could really still be a good person in all this, was if he did not know about Doris and Shelburne, and that he only discovered it after they got the name from the video John left. He then somehow got in contact with Doris, and tried to contain things after that, by lying to Steve, to protect Doris/Shelburne.
• Like Steve, I also want to know what WoFat meant by the family’s past.

The Steve McGarrett Story – No #37

We continue our story from here

Just for interest sake – the schedule for Hawaii Five-0 broadcasting has been released and it looks like our countdown to the 100th episode on the 7th of  November, will work correctly. We are just over a third of the way, but still a lot of Steve’s story to cover. I must admit the episodes that we are currently with, are very difficult for me to ‘study’.

As you will see I post a minimum of pictures. The only thing that makes me ‘handle’ it in  a sense, is the knowledge that Alex made it through the mental and physical pain, that is so visible in these pictures and that things recovered so wonderfully for him!  It definitely took courage to admit a problem and to address it and “survive” it.

Life is not about never stumbling or falling, but how we get up and move forward!

But let’s continue with our story………..

Chin picks Joe up at the airport.

Chin: It’s your second trip to Japan in two months.

Joe: What can I say? I’m a sucker for karaoke. Something on your mind?

Chin: Hiro Noshimuri. HPD has evidence that he was murdered, Joe. I’m not directly involved with the investigation, but I’m told they’re starting to look at you.

Joe: I did not kill Hiro Noshimuri. We had a conversation, and when it was over, he walked away. If he’s dead HPD should be looking at WoFat.

Chin: Why would WoFat want to kill the head of the Yakuza?

Joe: Shelburne.

Chin: Did Noshimuri tell you who Shelburne is?

Joe: No. But WoFat might think otherwise.

Chin: The problem is you were the one seen taking  Noshimuri at gunpoint. HPD isn’t going to just let it go.

Joe: Apparently neither is the Yakuza. We got company.

Chin confronts Steve about Joe and plants a seed of doubt with him.

Chin: Yakuza knows HPD’s circling Joe. They were sending a message. Steve, Joe is in real trouble.

Steve: Okay. I’ll reach out to Adam Noshimuri. He’s in charge now.

Chin: Maybe you should reach out to Joe.

Steve: Joe told me he didn’t kill Hiro.

Chin: Okay, I  know you trust him.

Steve: Of course I trust him. I mean he’s like a father to me. When my father wasn’t around, he was, for years.

Chin: That was a long time ago, Steve. People change. How much do you really know about his life over the past 10 years?

Steve: He saved my life, Chin. More than once.

Chin: I get that. I do. But I’m telling you, he’s hiding something. Why does he keep going to Japan? And what does he really know about Shelburne? And do you really believe he didn’t kill Hiro Noshimuri? I’m just saying you might not know the whole story.

Steve gets a call and he leaves for HPD to talk to Joe where he is being questioned by the police.

Steve: You gotta come clean with these guys. I mean, you know that right? You gotta tell them everything.

Joe: What is it you want me to tell them?

Steve: Why you went to see Noshimuri. Why you are the last person to see him before he disappeared.

Joe: You are interfering with something that you don’t understand.

Steve: Why don’t you explain it to me, Joe? Tell me what the hell is going on! You gotta wake up. The walls are closing in on you. HPD wants answers. The Yakuza wants blood. Shelburne. Is he worth this, huh? Is he worth going to jail for? Is he worth dying for, Joe?

Joe: People already died, son. I’m trying to make it stop! I’m getting out of here. Cops have nothing on me.

Later the day, when Steve can’t get ahold of Joe, he goes to his place and find his keys still in the door and his phone on the floor. He realises that Joe was abducted. He finds Joe at Adams’ place, where he is being beaten and questioned about Hiro’s disappearance. Of course Ninja Steve and his gun get Joe out of there. He  drives Joe home.

Joe: You realise, you just started a war with the Yakuza.

Steve: No Joe. You did that when you grabbed Hiro Noshimuri, okay. They think you killed him.

Joe: Well I didn’t kill him. I helped him fake his death.

Steve: What? Why?

Joe: I can’t tell you that.

Steve: I was tortured over Shelburne! I was tortured! Joe, Jenna Kaye paid with her life. I deserve answers. I want answers. I want them right now!

Joe gets out of the car and walks away……..

#AlexOLoughlin to Participate in ALS Benefit on 6 September 2014

Celebrities get countless requests to lend their name to good causes. Sometimes they do it for the publicity, but when Alex O’Loughlin, known to the world as Steve McGarrett of “Hawaii Five-0,” participates in Saturday’s second annual Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS at Kapiolani Park, it’ll be personal.

“My wife’s mother passed from ALS,”

O’Loughlin said in a phone interview Wednesday.

“My kids don’t have a grandmother because of this disease. My wife doesn’t have a mother and I don’t have a mother-in-law.”

ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is an invariably fatal disease that attacks nerve cells and pathways in the brain and spinal cord. (It is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease for the famed New York Yankees first baseman who succumbed to the ailment in 1941.) As it progresses, ALS sufferers lose the ability to move and speak, and eventually are unable to swallow or breathe on their own. In most cases their mind and senses continue to function normally.

“To watch what it does to families and watch someone die in such a horrible way with no chance of a cure … ,” O’Loughlin’s voice trailed off for a moment.

“That’s the thing about this disease, there’s not even a ‘chemo’ of sorts. There’s just no hope, and I pray as we all do, that one day if we raise enough money and put enough energy and time into that we will find something for people who are suffering from ALS.”

The cause of ALS is unknown and it does not appear to be inherited genetically.

“It’s just out of the blue,”

said O’Loughlin, who is married to surfer/model Malia Jones. The couple have three children.

“My wife’s mother was a triathlon runner. It’s a great and cruel riddle.”

O’Loughlin was one of many actors and celebrities to support ALS research by participating in the Ice Bucket Challenge, a grassroots fundraiser/awareness campaign that has gone viral thanks to video posts by participants world-wide.

He was challenged by “Five-0” writer/producer Peter Lenkov and enlisted fellow cast members Daniel Dae Kim and Jorge Garcia to do it with him. (Link to the video and our article about it here)

“We called out the president of CBS, Les Moonves — a number of people called him out — and he graciously and heroically accepted the challenge.

We thought we were sort of taking it to another level using big Gatorade-size ice buckets but we’ve since looked at a whole bunch of (videos) and there are some pretty impressive ones out there,” O’Loughlin said.

“I’ve seen so many high-profile people getting in on this, and the best part is that it’s a fun way to do it and everyone’s kind of challenging each other, but it’s really stirring up a lot more awareness of ALS.”

Looking forward to season five of “Hawaii Five-0,” O’Loughlin wouldn’t go into specifics regarding what awaits McGarrett but it sounds like fans can expect some surprises.

Hawaii will get a sneak peek at the season premiere at a Sunset on the Beach screening in Waikiki on Sept. 13.

“There have been some shifts with the team. There’s been some new additions. There’s some characters we’ve had to say goodbye to but the core team is still there,” he said.

“McGarrett still battles with the loss of his mother (and) we’re going to be exploring some new stuff about his father and that loss.

“It’s a big season opener, we’re certain you’re not going to be disappointed, and we’re looking forward to seeing everybody on the beach next week.”
