#AlexOLoughlin ………. Visiting a Dream Destination

It looks like Alex is taking the Japanese wedding theme from Morimoto Waikiki even further by visiting Japan on his Honeymoon.

Seeing the picture from Masi Oka on Twitter this morning, reminded me of this article from 2010 – specifically Alex’s answer to the second last question…….

Going Away With……. Alex O’Loughlin

Born in Canberra, Australia, and raised in Sydney, Alex O’Loughlin’s thick Aussie accent is nowhere to be heard on “Hawaii Five-0,” where he plays the lead character Steve McGarrett.

“I heard that some people thought I was American,” says the 34-year-old actor during a break from shooting in Honolulu.

“I take that as a great compliment. I try to be as authentic as I can for each role that I take. But once I’m done shooting, I sound like me again. I can’t hide it.” “Hawaii Five-0” airs Mondays on CBS.

Question: What is your favorite vacation destination?

Alex: Tulum, Mexico, because it’s magic. There’s a yoga retreat at the Maya Tulum Resort that’s really great. I just love that part of Mexico.

But Mexico is such a wonderful country in general. I love going out to Chichen Itza and climbing the pyramids and seeing the ancient ruins.

The food is amazing, too. The ceviche there was some of the best I ever ate.

Question: Where are your favorite weekend getaways?

Alex: In California, I’d say, Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Lake Arrowhead.

Question: What are your favorite hotels?

Alex: Claridge’s in London, the Mercer in New York City, the Maya Tulum Resort in Mexico, the Establishment in Sydney, and Como in Melbourne.

Question: What are your favorite restaurants?

Alex: Il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, Diamond Head Cove Health Bar in Honolulu, Rockpool in Sydney, and Osteria Gusto in Rome.

Question: How do you like being based out of Hawaii now?

Alex: I love it. The people are very much like Australians — very laid back and they don’t care about the whole star system. Some people might ask me for autographs or to take pictures with them and it’s my pleasure to do that because the Hawaiian people are really cool.

It’s the tourists who can be less cool. Before I came to Hawaii, I didn’t think I’d find any similarities between it and Australia. But the beaches are pretty similar and now that I’m here it really does feel like home.

Question: What’s your take on Spam?

Alex: I don’t get the love for Spam here. I hate it! I don’t know why they eat it. They have all this fresh seafood and delicious food. Why would they want to eat this?

Question: When you go away, what are some of your must-have items?

Alex: iPhone, sunglasses, toothbrush, and credit cards.

Question: What are your five favorite cities?

Alex: Sydney, Paris, Florence, New York City, and Rome.

Question: What kind of research do you do before you go away on a trip?

Alex: I mainly research food and lifestyle before I travel. However, when I arrive in a city, I try to talk to locals and get their opinions.

Question: Where would you like to go that you have never been to before?

Alex: Tokyo because I love the Japanese culture. I love the food, the fashion, and the respect the people have for one another. It’s so distant and seems so different from the western American stuff, which is fascinating for me as an Australian.

I did martial arts from a young age and studied Zen. But the best way to learn about a culture is to travel and immerse yourself in it.

Alex and Masi

Masi: Al and I at the Tsukiji fish market

(And it looks like Alex will continue his love of rings, by wearing a wedding ring. 🙂 )

Posted by Masi Oka on twitter 24 April 2014 (16h00 Tokyo time)

Question: What is your worst vacation memory?

Alex: I love spicy food so that wasn’t an issue, but I had some bad meat and got food poisoning in Mexico. Other than that, it was a great trip.

  • Some more detail about the Wedding Lunch on 17 April

Wedding luncheon at Morimoto Waikiki

  • Adding this explanation that I found on the comments of Five-0 Undercover FB Page for the picture of what looks like a drum (but is a wooden case):

It is a wooden case to present ceremonial Japanese sake!!
The thing on top is like a hammer for brides and grooms to break the top round wood of the case. The sticks in front in the left picture are like spoons for them to drink the sake inside. They finally share the sake with their guests.

  • And the writing on it:

From @monimoob on twitter: Mom says that’s a traditional wedding salutation for a long & happy marriage!!!! 🙂

  • We first saw Chef Morimoto in Episode 1:20 of Hawaii Five-0, when Steve and Danny visited the restaurant to find a bullet in a fish.

(Looks like, with the inspection of the food, the restaurant made the grade for a wedding reception 3 years later  😆 )

You can also read the article about Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s debut on Hawaii Five-0  BY ELIZABETH KIESZKOWSKI in Honolulu Pulse:

Morimoto meets McGarrett on ‘Five-0′ set

Once again it feels to me that Alex is showing us how grounded and real he is as a person ❤ – visiting with Masi in Japan, while on honeymoon and using this restaurant for the reception.

Not only embracing Hawaiian culture, but also those that he find interesting.

    Just am wondering about something…..
I thought this pic was taken at Tsjukiji Fish market in Honolulu, but you seem pretty sure it’s in Japan.
Can anyone verify which it actually is?

    • The last tweets of Masi were from Japan. So I think Alex is visiting him there?

    • The face mask Masi has around his neck, kind of made me believe he is Japan. And also most of the Japanese fans responded with their joy that Alex is in their country. And as LeiCa said Masi left for Japan shortly after he was done shooting. From his tweets it seems he has been busy teaching some acting classes there as well.
Also is interesting that the tweet from Masi, just before the photo was in Japanese and translated it says something like: “It is called get married to marry in Japan, but the marriage is a start spot of the lives new adversely not a last purpose. ..”

      • As Paula rightly pointed out to me my translation does not make a lot of sense 😦
I think in better English it would mean that in Japan getting married is seen as a begining and not the destination…
Maybe there is a Japanese fan out there who can translate it even better for me.

  4. That’s another proof that Alex doesn’t talk just blahblah, he means what he’s saying and if it’s possible he follows his dreams and his beliefs.

I’ve never read this interview, glad to know a bit more about Alex and what he like.
Can someone tell me what a “Spam” is? I have no idea about it, something like junkfood?
    Thanks FOYeur for your work.

    • From Wiki:
Spam is a canned precooked meat product made by the Hormel Foods Corporation, first introduced in 1937. The labeled ingredients in the classic variety of Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, sugar, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. Spam’s gelatinous glaze, or aspic, forms from the cooling of meat stock.

Miam! That seems very delicious all this, euh! let me think, no it doens’t at all. I understand him very well, I read that he likes vegetables and so on, he surely doesn’t want to eat this precooked thing.

Aloha!! Yeah there is a Tsukiji Fish Market in Honolulu so I was confused by that too. I don’t mean to be a pain, but I don’t think that all of this necessarily meant that Alex was in Japan, at least not right after he got married. Maybe a delayed honeymoon…I don’t think he and Malia got married right when it was reported, but maybe a month or more before. Remember….they were filming till about 2 1/2 weeks into March 😉

    • Hi Kim
Yes thank you for your comment, but I already gave my reply to somebody earlier. Here it is again:
The face mask Masi has around his neck, kind of made me believe he is Japan. And also most of the Japanese fans responded with their joy that Alex is in their country. And as LeiCa said Masi left for Japan shortly after he was done shooting. From his tweets it seems he has been busy teaching some acting classes there as well.

From everything we saw Masi was in Japan, so I believe Alex was there as well.

To me it does not really matter what the exact date of their marriage was or where the real ceremony was where they maybe exchanged vows and signed the papers as man and wife legally. It might have even be long ago, who knows?
She was wearing a wedding dress at Morimoto’s and they were cutting their wedding cake there. And celebrating the wedding with their family there on 17 April, so for me that is good enough to say that is their wedding day
A friend of Alex also posted on Intagram on the morning of 18th April that it is a beautiful morning after a beautiful wedding of Malia and Alex the day before. So I take it he regarded that day as their wedding as well.
That is the best evidence for me at many close to them see it as their wedding day.

    Hi FOYeur,
You are welcome for my comment. I wasn’t really trying to dispute your opinion of what you saw of different varied postings and assumptions from Twitter, Instagram, overly excited (understandably so) Japanese fans, and etc, including the seeming appearance of a Japanese mask around Masi’s neck, and an interview from a few years or more ago from Alex about his desire to visit Japan, which is the only part of the interview I do not recall, and the date of April 17th for there wedding, and yeah….It does not really matter to me either when or where but I just said that I didn’t think that they got married right when they reported it as they reported it on April 24th I believe. I felt that it was a bit earlier, an opinion, just as you have your opinions based on your many varied sources, and I also said that it didn’t mean that he was necessarily in Japan, at least obviously because of when the pic came out at least not right after he got married but maybe a delayed honeymoon.
