No place is too far to reach for an (#AlexOLoughlin) dream ……… Miek’s bruises

As most of you know, Alex and  Jiu jitsu trainer Egan ran a charity seminar at Egan’s brand new training centre, to teach women self defense.

All proceeds from the event went to the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

We already gave you the story from K, one of the local ladies who attended the seminar.

After we read Miek’s very entertaining story of her traveling from the other side of the world to attend it, we thought it might be a great idea to also share it with you.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

🙂

  • This is the conversation between Paula and Miek, that lead to her sharing her story with us:

Miek: Thanks to your blog, I’ve found out about the seminar for women’s self defense. Couldn’t resist. Didn’t have the money or the vacation time, but found a way anyhow to go and see him. He really is that nice in person. And that gorgeous, But then again… we already knew that just by looking at all of his work :-)

Paula: Lucky you! Drop us a note if you want to share your story of that day :D We got one, but always eager to hear more :)

Miek Sometimes you just gotta go for it. I live in Holland. Took a 22 hour journey in and a 22 hour journey out to stay over in Honolulu for 4 days. best decision I ever made. Was totally worth the money and the travelling time.

Paula: Did you fly over there just for this thing? Wow, that is serious dedication :D You are my heroin :)

Miek: Wow, that’s a nice perspective! Most just call me an idiot :-) I just felt I had to do this, so I did. It’s like they say: You never regret what you did, only what you didn’t do.

  • Miek’s account of her adventure:

How I got my AOL bruises 🙂

As some of you already know, I was also at the seminar last Sunday in Honolulu, with Alex.

It was surreal….. Still not sure it really happened, but that might also be the jet lag, since I flew in from Holland just for this special event and now I’m home again 😥

I was with the 3 pm group, but I arrived an hour early. (partly because I was afraid of being late and of course…more Alex time 😉 ) The other group was having so much fun with him. He’s constantly laughing and making jokes with everybody. You can really tell how much he likes being there in the studio. I was just sitting there taking a picture or two when the photographer came up te me, to tell me that picture taking wasn’t allowed.

At some point Alex passed me by and looked me straight in the eyes for the first time and believe me “gulp” doesn’t even come close. I literally froze!!! He’s is so gorgeous with those blue eyes of his …. All my plans of playing it cool went out the window and I just sat there staring. When the first class was over, they were all taking pictures with Alex and I have to say, he takes his time for that. I guess he realises how important it is for us women to be a bit representable in our once in a life time photo-op.  Our group was heading for the changing room as the first group got the opportunity to talk to him some more.

Finally it was our turn. The introduction, the first defense move. I could only think about concentrating on what was being said, because I didn’t want to lose my head again. How stupid is that … I’m in the room with AOL and I can’t seem to bring myself to look at him again. Felt a bit like a teen.

Of course Alex comes and joins us for the first assignment!!! Thank god my nerves disappeared at that time and I could (thank god) talk to him and practise with him, exactly as I wanted to from the get-go. My partner was asking questions and Alex explained as many times as needed, asking me (!!!!) to help out by making me grip his (very hairy and very muscular) arm 😎 . He then twisted himself lose, swinging right by me. And again. And now he grabbed my arm, where I had to twist lose … and again. I was so glad with my partner that kept asking questions. Best partner ever!

Sadly that was the last Alex worked with us, he had to divide his attention. I don’t know if I would have survived him sitting on top of me anyway, so maybe this was for the best 😉

A few funny moments in class I just want to share with you all:

  • At some point a fellow student put her knee in his family jewels! His comment: “She kicked me in the groin, but no harm I have three kids already I’m set.” Awesome comeback. 😛
  • Another student turned around the wrong way, giving him a great view of her bum, making Alex laugh and shout over to Egan: ”we’ve got a new move!” Asked her to do it again and told her: “If you did this while I was attacking you, I would have to let you go and find another victim, cause this girl is awesome, I can’t attack her.”
  • Corey (the co instructor for the women’s selfdefense class) showed the moves where Alex was the perp. She knocked him of his feet in no time. His reply to that: “she’s brutal, Egan you may do the next one”
  •  Then a student defended herself in a totally different way, that Alex couldn’t rebuf. He got Egan involved again saying: “This is a whole new move, I can’t do it, there’s only so much you can teach me in three years.”

At the end of the class there was the photo session and then Alex said “sorry guys I have to get home, to my kids”. Which is a good thing of course. Isn’t that why we all love and respect him so much?

I couldn’t let him go without giving him a little fingerpuppetbook we make at work. Simply because of the title: “Little Lion”. He was so sweet about my little present: “Oh man, no way, that’s awesome, thank you” Turning me to jello all over again.

Outside I saw Egan and Alex by his car (a big, Ford pick up truck – in case anyone wondered what kind of car he drives) and asked for an autograph saying I’m sorry for taking more of your time, where he graciously replied “of course, no problem”and then even telling Egan he had to sign my leaflet as well.

If after all of this there’s anybody left that doesn’t agree with us that Alex is not only the hottest guy on TV, but also the nicest to his fans, than here’s another little thing for them:

Did you know our multi-talented mancandy designed the new studio all by himself?

Is there anything he can’t do?

Thank you Miek for your story. Had so much fun laughing at his nut-contact 😉 – Paula

  • To complete the picture about the new gym and Alex’s contribution to it, we share some excerpts of articles from the last few months:

– Pacific Business news, 16 October 2013

Marcia Inoue, co-owner and wife of the well-known mixed martial arts champion Egan Inoue, said that a rapidly growing business forced the couple to expand.

“The neat thing about it is that Alex O’Loughlin from ‘Hawaii 5-0,’ one of my husband’s private lesson students, loves design and architecture, so he spearheaded and designed the whole gym with our input,” she added.

1474592_465224863586919_177674463_n

– Midweek, 13 November 2013

Inoue is extremely proud of the new gym, called Egan’s Training Center, and especially thankful to O’Loughlin, who was responsible for the fundamental design, layout and materials.

“I also organized the construction team,” adds O’Loughlin.

“In addition to that, over the last six months or so I’ve worked closely with my friend Steve Finch in updating the artwork for Grappling Unlimited, including a commission samurai piece that now hangs on the back wall.”

The new training center also has a hexagon cage and additional mat space, which O’Loughlin lists as his favorite things, along with a unique concrete bench they poured near the reception desk.

We think that there are no more words needed to explain why we adore this man so much……..!!

Miek great to read your account of your trip to the womens self defence class with Alex OLoughlin. I would love to have been there and see what sort of person he is as Alex. Was there a wide range of age groups or mostly local and young woman?

Thanks. He’s a real down to earth guy. at one point someone asked him to act out an attack and he said he’s good at “pretensies”. What a way to dismiss your own acting skills 🙂 As far as the crowd: there were mostly local women. Even some mothers and daughters. I guess the average age would have been 35 or so.
I wonder what average age his fanbase is. Anyone knows?

Anyway, he must be accustomed to women all over the world going jelly when he smiles at them and looks at them with THIS EYES. Sweet Jesus.

You had a dream and you made it come true I’m proud of you and i understand the feeling since many people criticized me for going all the way from England to Hawaii for SOTB4. Thumbs up to you

I’m a bit of a petrolhead, so to me that was one of the important details. I believe that the car says a lot about the man. And no dissapointment there either. It’s not a pretentious car. Not one of the well known brands, he’s got nothing to prove. No red Ferrari or white Audi. Just a Ford, but a very masculin and big one at that. Love it.

He’s said before he likes his UTEs (sport utility vehicles to we Americans) so he can haul off into the back country. The truck works well for him–enough room for family inside and equipment (surfboards and I wonder what else) in the back. It would have been cute to see if he had a baby seat for Lion. 🙂 Thank you SO much for sharing all of this with us! You are the Cinderella we are living through vicariously 🙂

If it had been me, he was looking straight at, I probably would have spontaneously burst into flames, and ruined Egan´s new gym 😛

Btw, Miek, did you get the impression that all the ladies there, were Alex fans?

    • Miek

Everybody was really into the class itself. I fully concentrated on the actual lessons as well, mainly because they were all so passionate about the things they could teach us. If you read thisand you live in Hawaii, you should totally sign up for the saturday morning self defence class with Correy. (and since Alex is pretty much at the Gym every day, you’d have a nice chance of seeing him regularly. How wonderfull would that be…
      * sigh *
Of course the ladies were very much impressed by Alex, but there were no line-ups around the block. The class wasn’t even sold out.
None of the women really stood out like a “crazy” fan….
Than again I probably wasn’t the best person to be asked anything about crazy fans 🙂

          For $ 300,- no-one is kicking you out, that’s for sure 😉
yeah… I don’t think I’ll ever get in shape if there’s no promiss of spotting Alex in the gym. That’s too bad, I’ll just have to live with my lazy self 🙂

              Hey Anwyn,
I wasn’t prepared for that either. I wasn’t even sure that I was in the right place. Thank god for google satelite, so I knew what the place looked like. What also surprised me that on the plane there were a lot of TV shows, but no Hawaii five-O. Go figure!!!
The tour guide had a few comments on the series at certain sights, like the cemetary and the hotel in the themesong. In the helicopter at one point they played the theme song and there’s a Hawaii-five-O cab. The cabby even has a H5O badge in the car, Five-OO licence plates, playes the theme song and has an IPad full of Alex pics.
If I had a travel agency in Honolulu I would definitely organise H5O trips. Visit the set, the hotspots a meet and greet with the cast, name it. That would be awesome 🙂

Yes, sometimes it’s so weird what people do or don’t do and I guess one can never properly prepare for such a thing. There are too many unknown factors. I think it’s all perspective and we, as hardcore fangirls cannot fathom that the rest of the world seems not completely spellbound by Alex. Anyway, that leaves more for us to drool about. But definitely the Island of Honolulu should promote the show and people a lot, cause after all they bring money to the Island. Don’t they? I cannot guess what your daring trip to Hawaii must have cost you and then add the helicopter ride to it all. Sweet Jesus, hope you didn’t rob a bank 🙂 May be you’ll get rich by running that travel agency in Honolulu organizing Hawaii 5O trips and I’ll be your customer one day. Who knows, all is possible.

Jesus Christ, I am getting more and more convinced that I would not have survived this in on piece. I also agree that his comments are so hilarious and smartly ambivalent. Another thought occured to me: He must actually really like his fangirls around him, adoring him and freezing with awe. Otherwise it would not make any sense for him to teach in this class. There are many other ways to raise money than getting physical with all the women. One more +.

Did you glance inside the car? AlexNymph asked if I saw Lion’s carseat, but I didn’t see a thing (accept for Alex and Egan of course)
The rest of my stay in Hawaii was also amazing, thanks. The weather is great, the palmtrees, the people that live there are all so nice and easy to talk to. I’ve met a lot of wonderfull people. Climbed the diamond head trail… amazingly beautifull sights. The driver of the Hawaii five-O (!) cab said Alex lived there and I do believe that I saw the house from up there. Took a bus to downtown Honolulu and visited as much Hawaii five-O spots as I could find…. just to know that I stood on the very same spots as I’ve seen on TV. Swam in the ocean, relaxed at the beach, drank a few MaiTais, Had shaveice and Loco Moco. Took a helicopter tour to see the rest of your gorgeous island and of course did a full day on Pearl Harbour. Very impressive. So besides the obvious reason I’ll never forget this trip, however short it may have been!
In the meantime I received an e-mail saying the picture will be sent soon!!!!!
I can finally let my laptop rest and stop checking my mail every five minutes 🙂

      • You sure got around on your mini vacation. Impressive tour 😀
I would think a helicopter tour must be expensive.
Btw did you remember to slide your tush on Alex´s design bench in the gym? I think it is at the reception, that would have been a must for me 😉

I didn’t even know he worked on that bench!! Definitely a missed opportunity. On the other hand…. the bench I sat on had a great view of the class. Not a hard choice: sit on a remarkable bench without a view or look at Alex…. What would you do?
Helicopter tour is expensive, but also worth it. And after all I was already pretty much broke, it didn’t matter anymore and I set out to make the best of every minute, no matter the cost.

Thanks so much @Miek for sharing this with us. More and more I feel that I would do just the same thing for Alex, although I used to think that – being from Germany – I would never travel overseas just for meeting an actor I adore. I’m not so sure anymore and feel this URGE to book a flight to Hawaii. Unfortunately, as a teacher I can’t simply take a few days off during the school year… And stuff like this NEVER seems to happen during the holidays. 😦

Hi frellingfangirl. I can only say: just go for it. No regrets, right?! get one of the local girls involved in keeping you updated if there are any events lined up. Maybe SOTB5, or just sign up for a few of Egan’s classes :-).
Good chance you’ll spot Alex there.
Go in without expectations and just enjoy every second of not being at home and at work.
Let us know when you’ve made up your mind. We’ll all cheer you on!

Hi DanseuseDiva, thank you for your reply to my story and the comments on tumblr. I just wanted to react to that.
In Holland we have a clothing store that supports the make a wish foundation. This foundation realises dreams of children that are sick. Since I decided to go and realise my dreams it seemed only fair that I would buy a shirt here.
The charity Alex and Egan chose was also for a childrens hospital, so double whammie.
(of course it’s not all altruistic, I really liked the t-shirt and since I hate sports I needed one anyway :-))

I only got acquainted with the series this summer. Somehow, our life paths with the series have not been able to cross over the previous ten years. But after watching for seven seasons, I fell in love with the franchise, the story, the characters, and the actors, of course (to be honest, I fell in love after the first episode of the first season). Therefore, it is so important and interesting for me to read these little travel notes about how the series was filmed and about…. who is Alex in reality. Thanks for the story. It’s cute, interesting, and exciting in her own way. For me, going to Hawaii is like going to the moon (and for some reason it seems like going to the moon is easier than meeting Alex). Therefore, the author of the story is a real hero who was able to make his dream come true.
