Who would have thought this young, innocent looking, Aussie lad would grow up to become US Navy SEAL, Steve McGarrett 🙂

Thank you for this choice, Paula, a great one!! I love the movie even though I don’t get about half the dialogues – the accents sound nice but incomprehensible to me – so I guess it must have other qualities enough to keep my attention. And not just Jack 🙂 Anyway, anytime you choose to post the Oyster Farmer, I’ll be extra happy *subtle hint* (and ^^ Westy ^^ will be probably extra unhappy 😦 ).

    • I will eventually post more, though we have already done a lot with Jack. I didn´t find his accent that difficult to understand.

Yes, you did post on Jack before, of course, but good things are never enough 🙂 ! I just checked that your country is one of the blessed areas where movies are subtitled rather than dubbed, so you have a great chance to train your ear for languages simply by watching TV. Everything is always dubbed in where I live. Annoying.

Okay guys, throw some Oyster Farmer slang at me and I’ll translate for you. 🙂

Emerald, I’m sure you’ll be now bombed with requests for translations 🙂 Sadly, I have nothing to ask, as I often can’t tell where one word starts and another begins and all I hear is noise. But, I was enlightened as to what “flange” means, so the slang is not totally wasted on me 😉

I had my difficulties with this movie too, I could not understand very much, Alex was ok, but the other actors were difficult to understand! I’ve watched it a year ago, maybe I should try again soon, to see if my Aussie Slang Skills have improved, since I started commenting her 😉 I’ve learnt so many new things/words ! Alex is cool in that movie, so different from H50, and the landing stage bang was …! (Maybe someone has a Aussie-Slang-Word for that )

I’m not sure it’s the slang or accents as much as the quietness–Alex does tend to mumble!

                  Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

Sorry, usually view this during breaks at the office, so just throw in my two cents every now and then. Just another huge AOL fan, from the beautiful state of Utah (one of the few non-Mormons here). Thoroughly enjoy all the good AOL web sites, where we can have real conversations and some great ogling 🙂

You mean what’s happening on the dock? The most slang term would probably be a ‘root’, as in ‘having a root’, but then there’s also screw & having it off. Root can be used in other ways besides just to say you’ve had sex with someone – ‘Get rooted = get fucked’, ‘rooting around – means you’re looking for something eg ‘What are you doing rooting around in that draw like that? or ‘I can’t find *insert object* – Have you tried rooting around in the shed outside”.

Here’s Australian Band TISM singing ‘Got a root out of it’ Basically means they did something and got sex. Skip the first minute or so, it’s a poetry recital.

              • Now that you mentioned “having if off” I seem to remember hearing that term in some Aussie movie, but can´t remember if I knew what they meant by it. “Rooting” I can´t remember, must keep ears open. I remember one summer years ago, one TV channel aired loads of Aussie movies, I really liked those, they were different from the regular American movies, such a refreshing change 🙂

JAAAAAACK!!!!! YESSSSS!!! I love this movie so much! Jack is a badass-in-training knocking a guy out with a frozen lobster 🙂
And yes Marnov, the aussie slang is giving us a hard time, but watching it – rough estimate – about 39 times with subtitles your ears adapt and you can enjoy it without annoying text concealing really really interesting parts. And speaking of that, some things don’t need words ;-).
My (other) favorite part of this movie is Jack carrying the new little puppy to Pearl in his big hands and arms. And the look from Smokey to TV and vice versa as the poor dog changes channels by farting, lol…
Thank you so much Paula for this and the pink beast in it’s younger days…

  6. I’m not sure I love the movie, but I enjoyed Alex very much! 😛
He’s so young in it, I feel like a ferocious cougar staring at his nekkidness. He had the strut down already and him lying in that nasty dirty bed… :! Nasty and dirty…oh yes…we’d need a nice long shower afterwards. ( and maybe a tetanus shot 😉 )
His face in #5 is a bit McGish. I love his wide open eyes, nostrils flared and “Oh sh*t!” look on his face. The “pink beast” wasn’t as tame back then. He could barely keep it contained. Not complaining tho 😛 There was an interview with him by an Australian talk show host…dang it I can’t remember his name…I think it begins with an R? Anyway Alex was so nervous and he ran his hands through his hair and licked his lips the entire interview. His accent was very thick then too. God, he is just adorable in his older interviews…*sigh*
But as much as I love young Alex, it doesn’t compare with how I feel about the hot, sexy, fit and still extremely adorable man he has become!
I’m not sure my panties could handle a “dock scene” now with his new hot body…akhhdggglkjygfdl… His strong thighs, taut booty and magnificent arms rippling in the open air….((THUD))
It is going to be a LONG summer 😦 My DVDs are going to get worn out. Oh yes…and I need to get fresh batteries 😉

  12. Thanks Paula for this delightful tribute to the lovely young “Jack the Lad” I love OF. Not just for Alex {Under stood} but for the beautiful Australian scenery along the River and the very fine acting by all the cast. and a well written moving story. I had no worries with the accents being a “POM” and a lot of our slang is rather similar and sometimes even naughtier!!!!
I can only imagine the Comments from CanadaGirl. . Marnov and of course Lurxgirl!!!!Something to do with Alex “Rooting” around their famous “Panties” that we here so much about!! LOL

There’s an Aussie term for the same word, ‘drop kick’. A drop kick in Aussie Rule’s Football is also known as a punt. So ‘drop kick punt =’s well, you fill out the rest’ 😉

Another rhyming slang term that is very rarely used here, is also “All quiet on the western”, as in “All quiet on the western front”.
