Alex O’Loughlin Starring as the Undercover Vampire Navy SEAL Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-0

“I can’t do ‘Moonlight’ again — it’s finished. The bottom line is that my true fans will follow me where I go.”

—Alex O’Loughlin, TVGuide.com, 29 April 2009

This story begins with another story that I did about Steve’s scars a few months ago. I am re-posting it here for those of you who haven’t read it before and also just for all of us to see those few shirtless moments again. 😉

In the beginning of the story I asked for some sort of explanation to this mystery of why the scar moved after Steve was initially shot in the arm and why the scar seems to look different  all the time. Up until now nobody has offered me any form of answer. 😀

One thing I do know is that the chances of anybody surviving a shot in that specific area, will be rare. Why am I saying this? For that we have to take a closer look at where this scar is located.

The scar ladies…..it’s about the scar!

Here is the proof that any human that has been shot in that spot, could not survive it, if not treated immediately and much less be able to fight or operate a gun with that left arm.

On the exact same spot as the scar, you can see the Blue and Pink “tubes” that are the blood vessels that take the blood to and from the arm. The Yellow “tube” is the major nerve that goes to the arm. But anything is possible! It could have happened that the bullet past somewhere between the 1st and 2nd rib and somehow missed all those “tubes”…….but that still leaves me wondering about something else……

I am no gun expert but a bullet fired from a big gun like the one Victor used at such a close range, surely would have gone straight through the body (especially if it was able to penetrate the Kevlar)…..but alas no exit wound has ever been seen on his back.

AND as you can clearly see he WAS hit in the left bicep……..so what happened and why is the scar in a different place?

This is one of the “best” theories I could come up with:

We are watching the stories of Steve McGarrett the Undercover Vampire Navy SEAL of Hawaii Five-0. (The spin-off series of Moonlight)

How did we get here? What happened to Mick after the door closed at the season finale of Moonlight?

Beth woke up the following morning and decided that the s*x was not good enough for her! 😛 She did not want to give up her whole life and become a Vampire or a Freshie and she left Mick. Mick was heartbroken and decided to relocate. He joined the Navy and took the identity of Steve McGarrett. 😯

The first thing that any Moonlight fan will ask me, is how is all this possible? 🙄 How is it possible for a Vampire to be a Navy SEAL and then handle the harsh sunlight in Hawaii? He is hardly ever seen with sunglasses either.

The secret lies in the re-turning by Josef in Moonlight, Episode 13, ‘Fated to Pretend’. With the superior blood lines that mixed in the process, Mick got a special ability to tolerate sunlight. This is what makes him so good at doing his job. He is not only an Undercover Vampire now ……… he is a superhero named Steve McGarrett!! 🙂

Oh and we have to get back to the scars. The scars are just there as a cover for Mick/Steve to look human. He has to add them and his bicep tattoos every time he needs to go shirtless. Sometimes he gets it wrong and they look different. He also forgot where he was actually shot by Victor Hess and he just chose the place where it is now, because he thought it looked cool and it was easy to reach. 😎

But I am on to him and he might just leave us further clues of his true identity – Mick St. John. After all we are fangirls and we look at everything through a magnifying glass. 😀

One of the errors of my career was doing a vampire show. The fans that I got from that show are very committed. They will never ever see me as anything other than Mick St. John.

Goodbye Sweetie…….till next time!

Goodbye girls……

This is dedicated to the make-up department of Hawaii Five-0 – I know I joke about your work a lot, but it is mainly out of pure jealousy. You do a wonderful job and actually get to work closely with this gorgeous man’s body! So please forgive me for all my complaining.

PS. Are there any vacancies? 😉

I am adding this most recent casual picture of Alex to eliminate any confusion there might be of the existence of the scar beneath his collar bone in real life (Please take note that this was taken during hiatus this year and he was most probably not wearing any make-up to cover any scars during his private time)

Wow — somehow Beth never came across as being menally ill, but she must have been!

  2. Thank you for this wonderful theory. Now I don’t have to miss Mick. I can see him and Steve at the same time from now on. I knew there would be more Mick would find out about himself after being introduced into Josef’s bloodline.

  3. It all makes perfect sense now. He’s not some ninja, he’s a vamp….brilliant. I saw an imagine or rather a mirror image, the one side it was Steve the other it said I have a dark secret and it was Mick, he obviously didn’t realise it had been taken. 😉

I think the scar on his collarbone seen in season two is actually a real scar from Alex’s shoulder surgery. That would explain why it wasn’t there in season one. And since his character gets shot and injured the make up department probably thought tnere wasn’t much cause to cover it up…. Did I just ruin it by calling him by his real name and saying he plays a character?

No you didn’t ruin it (it is all for fun)….but have a look at real life pictures of Alex ….he does have a small scar somewhere else, but not there……! 🙂

Sorrry I did not have time for a proper answer yesterday. I have since added the most recent real life picture of Alex that is available. https://alexoloughlinintensestudy.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=2493
And please scroll back to Page 2 of my original study…..there where he is coming out of the water in the blue trunks (It was from Episode 1:02 – filmed in July 2010 already)
If you take a closer look and read what I wrote there, you will see that there was an attempt made at doing a scar even back then…..I joked about the make-up person being shy and not doing a proper job of it. 😀
And then in three more episodes of Season 1 he had the scar already and not only in Season 2 as you said.
And as far as I know Alex was injured in his shoulder but it was never operated on (if you have the information on that surgery, please forward it to me, as I would like to validate all information) –
Therefor no scar (PS. If a Doctor operate on my collar bone to repair a shoulder injury, I would really take a closer look at where he got his training from, especially if he has left such an ugly scar.)

Wow, you don’t call it an intense study for nothing! Love it. You should present your theory to the WorldWide Moonlighters lot as they can only ever see Alex as Mick St John and seem to hold him personally responsible for the show’s demise and for moving on with his life (how could he?). I know I am new to this (brilliant) site but when Alex made those ‘error’s comments, the WWML fans went nuts! Anyway, I’m sure you’ve covered this already. I think they’d be very reassured to know that H50 is simply a spin off of Moonlight 🙂

The thing I like most about Alex is his wonderful sense of humour!!
I myself like balance in life.
The worst fate for an actor is to be typecast and stuck in one role for ever….they want to be creative, that’s what they do.
When I read Alex’s MySpace Blog page that he wrote after the cancelation of Moonlight, I cried for a day……I myself have lost a project after 6 years of building it from the ground up to a great success and I could relate to his heartache about the loss of something he has put his whole life into!!
AND I love Mick and Moonlight……but I like Alex as a great actor, that can do anything he sets his heart on, even more….

    • Totally agree. His sense of humour is very Australian and I certainly didn’t take his comments as being negative. He’s kind of a larrikin (Westy will know what I mean) and his comments often reflect this. I made a few postings on the WWML blog in support of Alex but got so much negativity in return, totally did my head in. I loved ML and was sad that it didn’t continue as there was so much scope for the ‘vampire hunt’ that was just developing in the last few eps and Beth working more closely with Mick to solve the cases. And I read how devastated Alex was when it was cancelled. You can see how much effort he puts into the roles he plays which is another reason I like watching whatever he is in. How can you blame the guy for moving on (some of the ML fans seem to, from what I read on the WWML blog) and wanting to do something different? McG is the role of a lifetime and he should enjoy every success it brings.

Andrea, I think SJ also means, when we start up with our rewatch of S1 again. We have done up to Episode 1:06, You can have a look on her blog to see how she has done it (Just look in the Junk drawers on the right of her blog and click on H50) and you can decide if you would like to join in and continue watching the”old” Seasons with us……
Don’t think you will ever see the new season at the same time as the US…you’ll have to pirate like the rest off us… 😆

                • Oops, just re-read SJ’s posting and I see what you mean. Sorry, I thought she was referring to S3. I will definitely follow the blog for the recap of S1. I pirated the final 3 eps of S2 as they weren’t shown here so will probably have to resort to that again when S3 starts up next month. I’ll look forward to the S1 recap as I enjoyed it more than S2. Hope S3 is more like S1 🙂

We started with it on SJ’s blog but it is on hold for now while we are doing Moonlight.
With Moonlight we are already on Episode 12 and with H5-0 on 1:06…hopefully 1:07 soon.
You wil find SJ has got a nice way of introducing the stories….

  8. Oh, thank you so much for this great theory. Love it.
I always thought Nick Taylor gave him the scar, since it was suddenly there after 1×09. How wrong I was! 🙂

I also thought it must be from the fight with Nick. I went back to watch the footage of 1:09…but when they say goodbye to Gnl Pac, there was no evidence of Steve being injured.
Then I realised I had to go back further……

  9. I miss my tortured lovelorn Mick…but I love my bad ass McG!! According to the vampire mythology a vampires hair tays the same length as when they were turned, they can cut it but the next day it will be the turning length again…..Mc must really get a lot of haircuts!

PL realy screwed the pooch with the scar. I’m pretty sure that even from that range the kevlar would have stopped that bullet, but they later snuck the scar into that little space near his clevical. if it had hit near the collar bone during the scene, it would have shattered the bone and he would have had major bleeding, the bullet wound probably would have been thru and thru, and depending on the angle of his body when he got shot the bullet could have shattered his shoulder or damaged his spin……but they did originally shoot him in the upper arm and that shot certainly would have been thru and thru and torn muscle….either way production took a lot of artistic license with the reprocussions of being shot…..like ep 2.1 where he wakes up all pretty on Max’s couch after major blood loss and throwing himself out of a moving ambulance.

I think every Vampire story makes up their own mythology as needed for it’s story…….Moonlight was on too short and it never really explained it’s mythology surrounding hair (although I would suspect with Mick’s long hair, that they indeed have that mythology)….I made up my own mythology for “my” story – I mean surviving in sunlight really took it far enough already. 🙂
We can never take anything on TV too seriously….it is a world of make believe. Like I heard DDK say in one interview, that Hawaii isn’t really that riddled with crime.
Fact of the matter is that on that spesific place of the scar, the 1st rib runs right below the clavicle and the chances of it being shatered is even greater – it was removed from the anatomy picture I posted, to show what runs even deeper, below it.
I read an article on “the movies” and the use of gunshots and where it is located……any gunshot wound can be fatal and will cause damage. Getting shot is dangerous all around!
They went for a “better” option when Danny was shot in that same episode and when Kono was shot in 2:05 – it was only flesh wounds that scrapped the side of the arm……but I think they wanted something more visible to remember Victor Hess by and the emotional scar he left behind by killing Daddy McG. 😉

I can go even further than Mick, years ago I saw a cartoon show what had for characters a special unit working for a Roman emperor, and believe me, the leader of the group was just like Steve, even had a name with the S as start, Sirius. And not only, also had one that was just like Danny.

  14. Thank you, thank you.. for this great study of the Scars
And the great laugh of Mick moving to become Steve!! LOL!! That is great story.
I am big Stargate SG-1 fan, Jack O’Neill fan, hence my name, and for almost two years, we had the same discussions about scars on the face and which ones need stitches and which ones didn’t!
so yeah, make-up artists should either watch the show, or read these blogs!!
    Thanks again for great study!!
