#AlexOLoughlin is celebrating Mother’s day

I was tortured over Shelburne. I was tortured! Joe, Jenna Kaye paid with her life. I deserve answers. I want answers. I want them right now.

– Steve McGarrett, Hawaii Five-0, Episode 2:13

(Ka Ho’Oponopono – “The Fix”)

Spoiler alert!: Please be aware that if you haven’t seen all of Alex’s work, there might be spoilers here. It will however not spoil any of the fun you’ll have watching it eventually.

I am not really a big fan of Doris McGarrett returning from the grave as “Shelburne” in Season 3 of Hawaii Five-0. My love for the Show however will not be hampered by this little difference of creative in my opinion from those of the writers. I will embrace it and maybe they will even surprise us by what they have in store.

One of the first things I said after we started speculating about Shelburne being the “dead” Mrs McGarrett, was that I am looking forward to see Alex playing opposite a mother. This is something new to him and should be interesting to watch him do.

Although we have never seen him interact with a realmother’ on screen (apart from in Black Jack Sweet Science), there has been experiences with mothers and mother like figures in his work. Most of them were not always very good and sometimes even a bit disturbed.

Let me explain:

In Oyster Farmer, Jack Flange who is in fact an orphan, has two mother like figures in his life. First there is his sister Nikki, and he told Pearl, that she (hos sister) was kind of like a mother to him. Maybe that is also why he wanted to look after her in her time of financial need.

Unfortunately, the assistance he needed to give was monetary, which lead him to robbing the fish market. Not a very wise way of helping anybody. You can see that there is a very loving relationship between the two siblings, but like most siblings, they also have their differences of opinion sometimes.

Hold still!

Piss off! I can look after myself!

Then we have Trish, separated from her husband, who is Jack’s employer. A very seductive woman described by her husband and verbalized by her Father in law as a ‘Great F/ck and a manipulator of the worst kind.’

Yes Jack.

She offers to play mother and nurse when Jack gets scratched by her son’s dog. A very “noble” and generous offer by her. Poor Alex Jack, I think he forgot to breathe while she was cleaning his wounds. She handled him like Mother Teresa would, caring for an orphan boy…. 😉 😉

Jack: “I appreciate you patching me up”

Trish: “It´s been a pleasure”

As you can see, she turns out to be much more Mrs Robinson than mother of the year.

We move onto Michael Carter in FEED. We never see Alex as Michael together with his mother, because she died while he was still a young boy. However we gather from the flashbacks that she played a very important role in what he became. As a young boy he had to be her ‘feeder’ and in the end he just cracked up and smothered her to death with a pillow (and also carved out her fat to make her skinny).

As a grownup Alex portrays Michael, a ‘feeder’ that loves his ‘gainers’ so much that he actually feeds them to death and in that way he becomes a serial killer. So in a sense, we can say that his ‘gainers’ become his mother in FEED and that just turns these mother – son relationships into the realm of the absurd and disturbed.

You’re my Jelly Baby

In Criminal Minds we have a similar scenario, but this time young Vincent Rowlings is witness to his adulterous mother’s murder at the hands of his own father. He videotaped it, but never told anyone. Alex then plays Vincent the 35-year-old serial killer that “becomes” his father, murdering his mother over and over again. So we have another rather disturbed mother – son relationship.

Watching mom die …again and again.

In Three Rivers the head of surgery is like a mother to her team. Here we find Alex as the gifted heart surgeon Dr Andy Yablonski challenging this mother on some occasions about procedures when they don’t suit the needs of his patients. They however have a good overall relationship with mutual respect. One of the best “mother” figures opposite Alex so far.

I’m asking now…

In The Shield we have another superior that plays mother to her team. This time the children are very naughty boys that do a lot of bad stuff to get the job done. McGarrett and his often over the top methods look like a boy scout, compared to what these police officers are up too. Although as Kevin Hiatt, Alex plays a much more behaved son than the rest of them, he crosses the line in a way that does not please mother at all.

WTF?

In the end, she fires him for doing the dirty with a subordinate, in the now infamous ‘chair scene’.

As you can see, the mother experiences in Alex’s past roles were not what we can call healthy at all.

This leaves us with the question of what is in store for us and Mother McGarrett.  This relationship is not really starting out in the best way. Here we have a mother that has essentially abandoned her son for 20 years. His whole life was altered by her untimely (faked) death when he was only 15 years old.

“The day that car exploded, it made me who I am”

The day that car exploded, it made me who I am. Danny, I can’t just let it go.

Steve McGarrett – Hawaii Five-0, Episode 1:13

(Ke Kinohi – The Beginning)

I sincerely hope the writers give Alex and his award-winning “mother” Christine Lahti, a solid storyline to work with. They are both great actors and deserve the best. Apparently the first episode of Season 3 is called Mother’s Day.

Goodbye Sweetie……see you soon!

Goodbye girls……

And just as we posted this story our first evidence of Mom McG and Steve and girlfriend. Looks like mom and Cath are already having issues and Steve is the bystander.

I’m with you, Paula, about the introduction of Mother McG in H50. Not sure I like this storyline at all. I much preferred S1 to S2 as the writers stuck better to good crime storylines while giving us an insight into the FaB Four. I hope they return to this in S3 and don’t focus too much on ‘soapy’ stuff. Also not sure how long I want the mother thing to drag on for or how much screen time needs to be given to it. Sure, develop the characters along side the crime stories but not to OTT an approach, I say.

Yes Andrea, for me balance is the key. In stories and in life.
For me it is all about what makes Alex happy. Happy Alex provide good viewing pleasure to us all. 🙂
The point I tried to make with my story is that I hope they give Alex good acting material and a solid storyline to work with!
He deserves only the best for all his hard work and dedication he has shown to his craft and to Hawaii Five-0 as a series.

  3. I doubt mom McG is going to have a long life on the show. It might be determined by us, the audience, if the majority feels mom is taking away from the fab 4 story, I´m sure Lenkov will bring out the guillotine.

But in the recent ET interview Alex himself seemed excited for the possible dramatic story arcs that mom McG will now bring to the show. I think he and the other actors wish to get the chance to show more of their real acting skills. Lets face it, Steve is pretty much pointing his gun in the same manner in every other episode…to our delight. Glad we get to enjoy those arms 😀

Oops, sorry, FOYeur, just realised I had credited the initial posting to the wrong person! To reply to Paula’s posting, I saw something today that said CL was to appear in at least 4 eps. I, too, hope that she doesn’t have a long life on the show. I hope PL has learnt his lesson from S2 – I, and many others, did not like the intrusion of Lori on the Fab 4. So hope that Mum McG (and Catherine, too, even though I really like her) doesn’t spoil the team dynamics. That, to me anyway, was the negative aspect to S2. Do agree, though, that it’s good to see Alex showing us what a terrific actor he is beyond just the lovely biceps and nice to see Steve be more than a ninja Navy SEAL each week. But I think no matter what, the humour and comraderie with Danny does give us more than gun-toting and bicep-flexing. There have been other moments, too, when Steve’s sensitive side was shown (often with kids) and I think the writers have done a good job of developing his character from being somewhat detached to caring more about people. Just gives us lots of Hawaiian scenery and insights into the culture, lots of Fab 4 moments, lots of good crime stories, and some character development of the Fab 4 (without descending into soap opera territory) and I will be happy. And, of course, there’s Alex; say no more….

      • Foyeur forgot to credit herself as the writer, it was initially there 🙂
I have been watching scenes from so 1 a lot lately, and think Steve´s character provided for a lot of humor back then, when the character was a Navy Seal tough guy and perhaps somewhat insensitive to other peoples feelings. But I felt Danny was bl00dy irritating as a angry little man, often giving Steve loud objection. I liked that Danny was allowed to mellow down for so 2, but then Steve was the serious one, with a heavy story weighing on him. For the loveofgod, let these two enjoy happy times together in so 3 (I hope this doesn´t sound like I´m shipping McDanno – cause I´m not).
p.s. I didn´t think they were going to get rid of mom McG so soon 😉
I guess Wo Fat enjoys his freedom earlier than expected…

  4. I have to admit, I got tired of the whole Shellburne storyline when it dragged out so long. And the big reveal, when Joe lied to Steve and said he was SB.
But now, if the writers do it right, I can’t wait for the angsty scenes between mother and son. Hopefully, Alex will be able to showcase more of his acting skills, and put those ‘wooden’ rumours to rest. There is soooo much potential with this storyline, I hope they don’t fk it up.
And I agree, Cath and Mom look a little strained!

For the love of all the is Holy PL better not F this up.
If he leaves Christine Lahti out there hanging in the wind like he did with LHo I am gonna enlist the junk kicker to do her job.
I can’t wait to see his reaction and how she tries to explain away the past 20 years and how it was for his own good blah blah blah.
It would be awesome if he gets a few solid scenes filled with emotion, so the nay sayers can just STFU about his acting skills (although they will never quit their b/tchi/n)

I am gonna miss calm cool collected Joe White though, I do love Terry O’Quinn….and I’m v v upset that the island let him leave.

Totally agree about the complaining about Alex’s acting. I’m an Aussie and have been following his career since Mary Bryant and the guy is great. His facial expressions do it for me – more emotion conveyed than a page of lines! Have the haters seen his other work? And, come on, he’s playing a Navy SEAL for goodness sake – he’s supposed to be stoic and detached, people! Just because Scott Caan waves his arms around a lot and says cute things, doesn’t make him a better actor, that’s just the role he is playing. I read somewhere that Scott said the McGarrett role would be much harder to play and I agree. By the way, Alex would be terrific as Jack Reacher. I’ve read all the Lee Child novels and there’s no way Tom Cruise is Jack! (sorry, just an aside there).
As for the mother thing, I agree with LaHagela, hope PL doesn’t screw it up again. Surely he’s learnt his lesson from the mistakes in S2. Won’t stop me watching the show but if he makes a hash of the mother thing, I don’t think it will do the show any favours. It would be nice for people to see Alex as more than just biceps and good looks – because HE IS so much more than that.

OK, Westy, so first you need to know that I live in Brisbane. Secondly, our house is dominated by sport but not footy unfortunately, as my 14 year old son plays baseball and my husband is a coach and field manager of our local club. My son has played for his club, district and state (Queensland) and has also represented Australia at a junior tournament in the US last year. So no room for footy in our house, sorry. (Having said that, which footy are you referring to? So many to choose from in Oz!)

Alex is a brilliant actor, loved him playing ‘Will’ in Mary Bryant (good Cornish accent too shame they never filmed from around Fowey in Cornwall, its so beautiful…. sorry I needed to mention my area) ..Maybe they could get him to play Christian Grey from 50 shades of Grey….wow!!!! faint now that would be a massive box office hit

Good site here. This is just my second post.
I see Alex in so many movie roles. He deserves to be a big movie star and he’s not being given the chance. A small but memorable role in a good drama would create a real buzz. If it happened for Brad Pitt, it could happen for Alex.
Alex would have been a great Bond, as well as Mad Max. Another role I see for him is Joe Harmon in “A Town Like Alice” . It’s a very good book by Nevil Shute, that I wish would be remade for the big screen. There was a b/w movie version in the 1950’s, but the better version was a miniseries from the 70’s I think, that was made for public television, starring Bryan Brown. The best part though, is the character is Australian, so Alex could use his real voice. It takes place during World War 2. The story has everything and Alex would be perfect for the part.
Alex is such a good actor. I hope he will soon get his chance to prove it to everyone.

    • Agree Linda about Bond and MM. Hadn’t thought about A Town like Alice. It is a great Australian novel and you are right about there not being an updated version since Bryan Brown’s 1970s one. Alex has a bit of the Bryan in him 🙂 Also think (which I’ve posted before) that he’d make a much better Jack Reacher than Tom Cruise!

The most surprising part Andrea, is that the author Lee Child, actually approved Tom Cruise in the role. Alex isn’t 6′ 5″ and 250 lbs either, as Reacher has been described, but he’d still be a better choice than Cruise, who is only 5′ 7″.

        Like

        • I know, Linda, I just can’t believe it! How could Lee Child agree to Tom Cruise as Jack? Insanity. I know that Alex isn’t 6’5″ and 250lbs but he has the bad-assness to be Jack. To me Jack’s not just about the size but also about the attitude and Alex/Steve fits the bill to me. Tom Cruise isn’t just too small to be Jack, he’s not ‘got it’ at all. Love the novels but can’t see myself going to see the film.

Yes these do make interesting reading, Only my 2nd posting…. Alex does deserve many acting roles, I know he was upset about the Bond role but Bonds loss is Mcgarretts gain, ( anyway watching the opening ceremony to the Olympics with bond n queen was quite amusing…. thankfully i’m not a bond fan so rather pleased he lost out) reading the ’50 shades of grey’ trilogy i can’t help but visualize Alex in the role of Christian Grey, but cant quite think who could play the ‘submissive’ female character….. well actually for one i’d be wishing & hoping it would be me but then so would millions of his female fans too. Did enjoy the Jack Flange character in Oyster farmer just for that rather dreamy sexy Aussie accent but was also good at a Cornish accent as Will Bryant….whatever he does though i’m sure he’ll excel at…… I has something to do with that rather sexy frown… i can’t decide if he has a visible scar by his eyebrows when he frowns… but i could spend a lifetime inspecting it
